All language subtitles for Keeping up the mood on set

on any job it's tough to keep up morale

in the crazy wilderness of filmmaking

or it's not really as regulated as typical job setting

this is especially true when you go to work

at your average job

you typically know your hours

what to expect

usually expect break at exact times

and your performance usually doesn't have

anything to do with what time you leave for the day

and there's usually no worry

that the business might shut down at any minute

because it ran out of money

but none of these things are true

on most low budget film sets

it's a jungle out there folks

it can be a recipe for frustration

so it's important to keep up the mood on set

from my experience

the big crew positions the DP

the first ad

the director

they all establish the tone and mood of the set

if they're lazy

or stressed out

or disrespectful

the whole crew tends to follow their lead

this is another reason

why I chose Gavin Booth as my first ad

we're both serious about work

but like to laugh and play while we're doing it

on the first major day of shooting

Gavin gave a big opening speech

to lay down some ground rules

and I think that really helps set a professional

but still positive tone

and the main thing is that we have a great time

this is gonna be fun man

you guys are great

this is cool

keeping the crew

well fed and rested

is also important

for Morales

we've talked about in this chapter

expressing gratitude

and just generally being positive makes a difference

as well cut

awesome well

that was great cut

it's so good

can we please do another one

that's why we made these goodie bags

for each person on set

and put their names on them

so everyone knew that they mattered to us

and we're appreciated

as we'll see in the next chapter

we were hit with unexpected

and unseasonably freezing cold weather

so after the first day of shooting

I went out and bought

every space heater that I could find

that really paid off

all these people that you're seeing here

are actually freezing cold

as you can see between takes

but while the cameras were rolling

they did a phenomenal job

acting like they weren't cold at all

and I think they were only able to do that

because we took care of them

and warm them up whatever we could

now I thought I had done a good job

in anticipating challenges when planning our location

because I intentionally

selected a place with a very comfortable base camp

it was covered

so everyone would be able to stay dry all day

there's plenty of seating for everyone

plenty of convenient parking

and base camp was far enough from set

most of the time

that people could relax and talk while we were shooting

there's a lot of easily

accessible electricity

restrooms were close to set and base camp

and were much nicer than the standard

portable outhouses

that usually find on a remote chute like this

that's what kind of drives me crazy I mean

I really tried to anticipate all possible challenges

I just didn't anticipate the ones we ended up having

now eliminating negatives is important

but sometimes

you just gotta let go and have fun

I think that in general

this was a really playful cast and crew

it's important to me

as a filmmaker

to not only create good films

but also enjoy the process

so I've always looking to

surround myself with professionals

and laugh and have fun

and there was a lot of that on this shoot

I was also really grateful that our lead actress

Eva Jane was so patient

in working with the child acting partner

which isn't always easy

though I think having a kid on set

did kind of add this sweet

innocent vibe

intended to make everybody a little bit more

light hearted and playful

on the morning of our really big production day

the script called for the crowd of extras to murmur

but I was actually looking for a little bit more

scandalous of a murmur

so I told them to act like they were on Jerry Springer

Mori Povich

one of those

daytime TV trash talk shows

and it was pretty fun

also during this time

Andrew Trebellini

who was a very well known and

respected actor

here in Seattle

made little goof

when he just

lip synced his lines

for some reason

life is returning to our world

alright keep going

uh go back to work

yeah sorry I

I don't know why I

I was watching them line and then I started by

it seems like a small thing

but that kind of levity does a lot to make the set

a much more enjoyable place to work
