All language subtitles for 4. Using the Rate Stretch Tool

Welcome back everybody.

In this video I'm going to show you how I use the right Stretch tool in my videos to slow down and speed

up my clips in my logs.

Very easy to use and I'll show you how to do it in just a few minutes.

So as you can see once again on your top on your toolbar here you a number of different things you can

select.

So the one we're going to select is this one right here.

It says if you run your mouse over it says right Stretch tool or you can hit are on your keyboard and

it will also select it if you can't see the right Stretch tool there.

It's probably because something else has been set as a default.

So if you just click here hold down the old key keep clicking it will change to the right Stretch tool

just like that and you'll see that little symbol there.

Again you can get on the keyboard and that will also change it to the right Stretch.

So what we're doing here if I zoom into my one of my blogs I've only just released yesterday.

You'll see here that I've got some clips on my timeline that are currently playing back at 50 percent.

And you can see that here 50 percent 50 percent 50 percent.

So they're already stretched out so that they're playing back in slow motion nice and slow.

Kind of matches the background music a little bit in the pool that's 50 percent.

So the original clip speed if I just take that back and I see like 100 percent.

The clip originally was this speed here just normal speed.

Laptops running a little slow because I'm recording my screen.

It's a normal speed.

All you got to do to make this clip slower and you can do this with any clip you take from your camera

is to select right Stretch click on the edge and drag that out.

Do that again as you drag it out.

It's going to slow down the clip.

Right.

If I release it you'll see here it says sixty three point five nine percent.

So it's slowed down by around 60 percent.

If I stretch it out further right it's going to slow down by 50 percent.

So exactly half if I want to speed up my clip I just click on that and then bring it all the way in

and it will playback superfast.

Watch this.

OK.

All right.

You get the idea and I'll stretch it right out again.

Not doing a good job of grabbing that.

So we'll stretch it right out again back to slow motion.

Now you can verify this if you right click on that go to speech slash duration you'll see here that

the corresponding speed now reflects inside this box.

Fifty three percent.

If I close that now I'm lost myself completely.

Let's go back to where I was.

Okay so if I bring that all the way back in again right over here and I right click at a speed duration

you'll see that it's two hundred sixty three percent to this two ways you can adjust the speed of your

clip you can use the right Stretch tool which I use on a regular basis.

Just like that slow motion or fast motion just by using the tool and stretching the clip out on my timeline

here or a right click on the clip go to speed duration and I just select in you know 50 percent.

Now I'll quickly go over the reason why I use 50 percent and I'll finish off the video.

So that's the rate stretch tool.

Now I'm going to go back to my normal select tool or V on the keyboard.

All right click on this clip.

Go down to properties and I talk about this in another video where I talk about buttery smooth slow

motion and I'll just bring it up again real quick.

So in this clip this clip right here was shot at 50 frames a second right here.

So that means that if I slow that down by 50 percent the clip is going to play back at 25 frames a second.

Now 25 frames a second we know is not slow enough that we're going to see jagged crappy footage.

It's still going to play back relatively smoothly.

Twenty five frames a second is what that's playing back at.

And the reason being is because I shot this at 50 frames per second which gives me additional frames

to play with when I use slow motion had I shot this clip at 25 frames a second.

If I were to reduce this clip down by 50 percent then it's going to playback really crappy.

For example if I take this clip here shot a 50 frames and I reduce it down to say 25 percent.

Watch this.

It's all jagged key and it's just not nice.

It's not smooth.

And the reason being is because there's not enough frames in the clip to make it smooth.

So that's why it's important.

If you're shooting b roll.

But to talk about another video make sure if you can go into your camera settings this is what I do

and make sure you select your frame rate at around 50 to 100 frames even 200 frames if you can.

That gives you the flexibility during the editing process to use the right Stretch to and slow down

your footage to get really smooth slow motion.
