on the sixth hour.

[maestro] two groups
of sand sculpting teams

Are carving their way
through four qualifying heats.

It's a matter
of live or die.

[maestro] previously,

Group one faced
their second challenge.

Oh, man,
look at this awesome sculpture.

-[brian] don't be intimidated.
-[maestro] ludo and inese

Clinched the win with
their prehistoric predators.

Yeah! It builds confidence,
but the tide waits for nobody.

[maestro] now, four teams remain

As group one
brave heat number three...

You think you reach the sky
with your little bucket?

You don't intimidate me.

[thomas] whatever you're doing,
do it faster.

[maestro]
...And the stakes are sky-high.

I'm worried about every single
team on this beach right now.

If the collapse happen,
we have no plan.

-[alex] this could be it.
-[maestro] 'cause only one team

Will win the grand prize
of $10,000.

Folks are flocking here to
make a home and build a future.

So for today's challenge, we
want you to look to the future

And build a home
science fiction-style.

-Ah.
-Ooh.

[maestro] but we're not
gonna make it that easy.

We're adding another level
to the pound-up.

[sculptors laugh, groan]

That's right.
That's four instead of three.

Your futuristic homes
must be sky-high

And still be standing
when the tide hits the marker.

Your time starts... Now.

[marie-line exclaims]

-Okay, okay.
-[alex] all right.

We're gonna take our time
on the pound-up today.

[isabelle] we don't want
to hear the sounds of...

-[marie-line] collapse.
-...Sweet collapsing.

Today's the most important day
for pound-up

Because we have to go four high,
and it has to stay.

-Last challenge, we won!
-We won!

It feels good,
but we are so nervous

That we do our best
and that it collapse.

We're making
futuristic house in the sky.

[ludo] with cut-throughs on top,

With a spaceship
flying through this building.

[inese] fantasy and science.

[ludo]
two things at the same time.

Maybe because of
all the movies I watch.

The toughest part
is that it stays up.

So, I've been here before,

And, uh, I learned when
it comes to going high,

You gotta respect the base.

[peter]
oh, we've got a crack, alex.

-Another crack! Another crack!
-Yeah, it's going, it's going.

[sighs] oh, s***.

Hey, alex. Are you afraid for
a collapse like last season?

Nobody wants a collapse, and
I don't want people to be like,

"alex, didn't you learn anything
from last season?"

We're making an organic,
kind of futuristic home.

I like the stylized forms.

And some curves, and some
pretty serious cut-throughs.

What we feel the future
looks like for architecture.

But in the future,
I see the tides rising

And taking out everything.

-Exactly.
-[thomas] all right, hit me!

I mean, don't hit me,
but... Hit me.

[maestro] to win this futuristic
architecture challenge,

The teams must meet
the judging criteria:

Height, detail, and design.

[maestro] karen and rusty.

We're back to
our first group of sculptors,

-And we're going sky-high.
-[karen] yes, we are.

What is the biggest risk

-The teams will face today?
-[both] collapse.

[maestro] alex has been
through this challenge.

You think that
gives him an advantage?

[karen] absolutely not.

[rusty] this height challenge
is the great equalizer.

[karen] we've seen
some top teams collapse.

-[sandi] back away. Back away.
-[form creaking]

-Back away.
-[all exclaiming]

Oh, shoot. That's it.

-[karen] anything can happen.
-[sighing]

[maestro] in this group,
ludo and inese

-Won the last challenge.
-[karen] they sure did.

I'm sure the other teams
are feeling the heat now.

[maestro] marie-line and
isabelle. They also got a win.

[karen] they are so confident,
and they've come up with

Some of the most cool ideas.

[rusty] this is gonna be
really interesting

To get inside the minds
of these teams

And see what they think
the future's gonna look like.

We wanna see alien!

We want the aliens rising.

There's no more human on earth.
It's now alien. Bam!

[isabelle] we are not
architectural girls.

My fun in life
is not to do windows or edges.

[isabelle] we are building an
alien condo for all the aliens.

The shape of it,
it's really interesting.

[marie-line] intertwined
with the fungus world.

The riskiest part
of our structure today is...

The upside-down arch.

We wanna make some design on it
that's gonna be, "pow!"

The theme for today's challenge
is futuristic houses.

Along with height and detail,

We're also looking for
a really cool design.

[rusty] the real trick with this
is finding a shape

That will last throughout the
competition, but not be boring.

We want these things
to stand out

And not just be a needle
sticking up off the beach.

[karen] or just your standard
pyramid triangle.

[rusty] it's all about balance.

You gotta balance the risk
versus the reward.

[karen] brian and dawn.
In the last challenge,

They showed us excellent
technical precision

And great symmetry,

And that's what
architecture is all about.

Yeah. This might fit
really well into their style.

[dawn] we gotta be
really cautious about this.

Otherwise it might collapse.

Today's challenge
is go high or go home.

Three feet higher
using the same amount of time.

We have to haul ass.

[dawn] in the future,
we need sustainability.

[brian] we're gonna build
a sustainable, collapsible home.

The top floor is
a living garden.

So we'd be able to
recycle water up there

And also grow our own food.

[dawn] we are gonna push
ourselves as far as we can

And pull out all the stops
for this challenge.

Whoo!

Brian and dawn!

You're way up there
and I'm all the way down here.

We're trying to go
as high as we can.

Taller than
our next door neighbours.

You think you reach the sky?

[dawn] you don't intimidate me!

[marie-line] yes, we do!

Well, you guys are married.

What do you think
about your future?

I think travel. You know?

Other sand sculpting events
around the world.

-And long-lasting.
-And long-lasting. Yeah.

Everybody knows
about this challenge.

Everybody knew
that this day was coming.

How do you feel right now?

-We found a lucky rock.

[brian]
it's a beautiful little heart.

It's gonna be our
good luck charm for the day.

And mother nature
has upped the ante.

I think we're doing a pretty
good compact. We'll see.

the rain's a tricky thing.

If the sand is going too wet,
it's gonna be really heavy,

And we have a structure that
have a lot of hole in there.

That can make
some collapse, so...

[marie-line] watch out.

Ludo.
You think we will go higher?

-[ludo] I don't want to.
-We can decide play it risky

-Or play it safe.
-I don't know.

[inese] rain, it is challenging.

Everybody knows that
there is collapses

In this competition, so...

Everybody's nervous.
And it's super cold.

Let's be consistent
throughout the piece

With that thickness
of the wall.

-[alex] drenched.
-[thomas] we're shaking.

-Yeah.
-You try doing a sharp line

With this hand...

We're doing cut-throughs.

It's pretty risky
because we're basically

Getting saturated sand.

[brian]
if it's really heavy rain,

Then it's gonna make the top
part of the sculpture too heavy

And it might collapse.

It's like, okay, game over.

Four fantastic
sand sculpting teams

Are taking it to new heights
in today's architecture round.

And the rain
is bringing the pain.

-[alex] everything's drenched.
-[thomas] we're shaking.

-It's not gonna work, no.
-Knock the whole thing over.

Yeah. Don't say that.

I need tape. To tape my teeth.

[shivers, laughs]

In race against the tide
tradition,

We're going sky-high.

Four forms.

In this challenge,
we've seen teams

Leave the bottom form
on too long.

[shouting]

[yoshi exclaims]

[rusty] and if something happens

Toward the end
of the competition,

There's no time to recover.

[karen] so timing is everything.

[rusty]
and to add to our challenges,

Mother nature
came to play today.

Working in the rain sucks.

If it's pouring
while they're carving,

Details might disintegrate.

This time, we've asked
the teams to get futuristic.

So we're looking for
height and detail as usual,

But I really wanna see
these artists push the design.

[karen] only four teams left.

You have to do something
to stand out on this beach.

It's important to really
give it our everything today,

Because the competition
is so strong.

[brian] what we have here
is a big back wall.

It'll be covered
in solar panels,

And then we're
hollowing out the front

And making a big garden.

[dawn] just worried about
we're not going fast enough.

We're making
a cut-through based on design.

Organic shapes and curves.

You know, taking a lot of
examples from nature.

There's only
so many places you can

With the amount of weight
we're using here.

But we gotta be careful,
because one wrong move, and...

Something bad can happen.

The vibe on the beach
is really different today.

You can feel
the stress and pressure.

-[inese] same.
-Oy. Same. You feel it.

You won the last challenge.
How are you guys feeling?

Well, last challenge,
we were laughing...

-Yes.
-But this morning was like...

[inhales sharply]
...Little bit, mmm...

It's a tough challenge.

We have to deal with
a lot still.

[karen] I'm pretty impressed.

You've made two cut-throughs
on here, which is always a risk.

But it's not over until
you pull that bottom form.

-[siren blaring]
-oh, sculptors!

Oh! Do you see he has a boat?

[maestro] the tide has reached
its furthest point.

-No way!
-What?

Which means
she's coming to get ya.

-No!
-[thomas] what?

This is
your yellow flag warning.

-No!
-Oh, no!

-[dawn sighs]
-[brian] keep on going, dawn.

-Come on.
-[dawn] we don't have time,

We don't have time, we don't
have time. We're screwed.

We have too much stuff to do
and too little time.

[thomas] I don't know
what the future looks like.

I hope that we're
able to incorporate

A lot of plants and trees
coming off of buildings,

Green rooftops
and things like that

To insulate homes
and to collect rainwater

And to create oxygen
and filter oxygen.

[dawn] when I think
of the future,

I think of fully sustainable.

Our dream home would have
stained glass windows,

Just beautiful colours

To reflect the light
and bring power to it.

[ludo] in the future,
we will live in the clouds.

No cars anymore. Spaceships.
That's my mental picture.

[marie-line] if human being
are not anymore on this earth,

It is probably because they
have broken the environment.

So maybe the aliens are
the species that repair it.

Alien party going on.
Alien party!

Marie-line, isabelle.
Talk to me about the shape.

-What are you making here?
-It's an alien condo.

[marie-line] the riskiest
part of our structure

Is the arch,
'cause the weight is on the top.

You have some great little
details in here, in the circles.

[marie-line]
the aliens build a new moon.

So they can control
the tide, actually,

So they don't have to
race against the tide.

-[laughing]
-[rusty] uh-huh!

Speaking of the tide,
it is coming.

We still have
one more form left.

We've seen teams leave
the bottom form on too long.

If something happens,
there's no time to recover.

-What's your plan?
-Cry. [chuckles]

We still have, like,
half our sculpture to go, so...

[alex] pretty stressed.

It's taking a lot longer
to actually get things done.

[thomas] whatever you're doing,
do it faster.

[karen] there's only about an
hour left in the competition,

And I'm worried about
every single team

On this beach right now.

Not one team has
all of their forms off.

We've said this
over and over again:

It's not over until
you pull that bottom form.

-Oh, agnese, agnese.
-[agnese] uh-oh.

Now you can wait for big show.

[sanita] it's gone.

[marie-line] I'm nervous.

We still have to
remove the last form.

That's a big thing.

[marie-line]
if it doesn't hold, we...

[isabelle] we're screwed.

If they pull that bottom form

And the whole thing goes,
they have to start from scratch.

It's over.

[dawn]
we're running out of time.

We have these beautiful spaces
and these beautiful windows.

They're not gonna have
any decorations,

Which is unfortunate.

We've spent a lot of time

With that top,
trying to figure things out.

We're gonna just
be worried about

Getting to the bottom
of this piece.

We're behind schedule.

We don't have any more time
for perfection,

So I can't get
too caught up in

How beautiful
these lines could be.

We gotta get
those last forms off.

-Right.
-And we don't know

-If it's gonna collapse.
-[alex] okay.

I'm concerned.

Karen and rusty, if I can see
that tide there, it means

-There's not too much time left.
-No, there isn't.

[rusty] with this little time
left, all that work left to do,

And everyone still having
the bottom form on,

-This could spell disaster.
-[karen] I think this is

A great example of sculptors
getting caught up in the design

And not thinking about
the time they have

And the mass they have to carve.

[rusty] it's a little bit
of tunnel vision.

You kinda get focused in on

What's right in front of you
and lose sight

-Of the big picture.
-[karen] I'm worried about

Every single team
on this beach right now.

They have to get those
bottom forms off right now.

[inese] just dig deeper here
to take off pressure,

And then we will
take off last form.

[ludo] this is the time.

-We want to know what we have.
-[ludo] yeah.

And then take off
all of our stress also.

[isabelle] we are going to
remove the last one.

This is moment,
because if it's collapsing,

Then we will not have any time
to do something else.

-Time to see.
-[marie-line] is there--

Are we gonna have
a sweet sound of collapse?

[isabelle] let's see.

[marie-line] we got
weak corner over here,

So we're gonna
take that off right away.

Let's go.

-[alex] no collapses today.
-[thomas] please.

-So far so good.
-Yeah. Straight back.

[alex]
this is the heart attack zone.

[thomas]
everything looks good.

I'm so stoked that this thing,

The bottom form is off.

[alex]
this tide is really close.

The tide's coming in, and we're
just not gonna have the time

To put in any of the detail.

We were hoping to be
a little further than we are.

[brian] still up. It's a relief.

The tide is not
a relief, though.

[siren blaring]

Attention, sculptors!

-[dawn] no way.
-[brian] what?

You knew this was coming!

This is your red flag warning.

-No!
-[ludo] no, impossible!

[maestro]
you got ten minutes left.

[dawn] we've got
so much work to do, brian.

We're not gonna finish.

Not gonna be intimidated
by a red flag.

[thomas] quick, quick,
quick, quick. Hands moving.

We don't have time for that now.

I need to make clouds.

It has to be the last thing.

[dawn]
we gotta finish the piece.

I hear the tide coming
as well as my heart beat.

That's it, sculptors!
Tide's in, time's up.

-Good job.
-We're done.

Oh, man.

It's really pretty.
And it's holding.

Wow,
that really got away from us.

We're not super confident
with our sculpture.

We didn't get to put in
any of the detail.

We just tried to
accomplish too much,

And we just ran out of time.

Still standing. [chuckles]

The details
could've been stronger.

[inese] I hope the judges say

-It's space-y.
-Mm-hmm.

-It's future.
-Yes.

-[exhales] that was a sprint.
-That was.

We survived. No collapses.

[thomas]
it has, like, a cool look to it.

It would feel fantastic
to win a challenge,

But there's some
really good talent here.

-These guys. These guys.
-Damn it. Damn it. Wow.

[maestro]
now it's up to the judges.

They'll be looking for
height, detail, and design.

Karen and rusty,
height challenge complete.

And not one collapse.
I can't believe it.

I don't think
that's ever happened before.

It's a testament to the skill
and experience

Of this group of sculptors.

First up, ludo and inese.

[karen] this is a beautiful,

Kind of retro-looking
space obelisk.

There's a lot of movement,

Making it feel like it's
vaulting through the clouds.

There's even a couple of
rocket ships flying across it.

[rusty] they've got
a couple of cut-throughs

Actually separating
the two towers.

If you look at it from the top,

It's actually
a 3d star looking down.

Adds a lot of light
and air in the sculpture.

However, it looks like
they ran out of time.

They started out with
a ton of detail on the top,

And some of those details have
kind of gone to the wayside.

[karen] I would've liked
to see a little more separation

Between the clouds
and the house.

Well, hey,
maybe they were inspired by

-The rain clouds all day.
-Probably.

[maestro] alex and thomas.

This is alex's second time

Through
the architecture challenge.

[karen]
and he did not disappoint.

It is technically
super risky what they did.

That thing is 11 feet high

With a cut-through
through the top.

[rusty] it kinda has
a skate park feel to me.

[karen] those curves add a lot
of movement to their piece.

They had about half of
this sculpture left to carve

With hardly any time left.

[karen] but what they did
was add texture

In just the right places
to make it feel like

It's more finished
than it really is.

But you can tell
that they were rushed.

I would've liked to see
a cleaner finish at the bottom.

A few more details would
really make this thing pop.

[maestro] brian and dawn.
Looks like they got

A little penthouse deck
going on up there.

[karen] I love the top
of this sculpture.

It's a beautiful atrium
with plants growing

And lots of texture
on the inside.

[rusty] hollowing out
the entire top of the sculpture,

All that weight is gone,

Reducing the risk of collapse
at the bottom.

We've never seen
this approach before.

[karen] but it's not
a very well-finished

Or interesting look.

The pattern is rather
boring and repetitive.

[rusty]
it's so cool at the top.

Unfortunately,
it's impossible to continue

That level of detail
with this timeline.

[maestro] and finally,
marie-line and isabelle

And their alien condo.

[karen] leave it
to these two to come up

-With an alien condo.
-It's very organic.

It almost seems like
this is alive.

[karen]
there's a lot of technical risk.

It's about 12 feet tall.
There's mass up high,

There's mass in the middle,
and there's mass on the bottom.

It's the biggest one
on the beach.

These dormers add some
instant contrast and interest.

In the circles,
they've represented

The four phases of the moon
affecting the tide.

But I'd like to see
this door a little bigger

So I can actually go inside
and see what's in there.

[karen] and a little more
precision on the stairs.

[rusty] I think they need
to focus in on consistency.

Well, I know it's really high,
but guess what?

That tide is about to flatten
everything out in a minute.

Mm-hmm.

[tense music playing]

Congratulations, sculptors.
That was amazing!

And not one collapse.
Give it up to yourselves.

[all clapping, cheering]

Today you were asked
to create a futuristic home,

And they had to be sky-high.

[rusty] all of you
transported us to the future

With your towering designs.

It might be a good model

we wanna go to the final.

what we are able to do.

[rusty] I really wanted
to see a cool design today.

Marie-line and isabelle
delivered.

It was intricately detailed
and interesting.

[karen] we wanted height.
They gave us height.

There was detail from the top,

The middle,
all the way to the bottom.

It looked like it was
pulsating with alien life.

Marie-line and isabelle
have proven that

There's no challenge
that they can't take on.

But for one of you,
the tide has turned.

we're a little disappointed.

We're happy we got this far,

And it was a great experience.
