sculpting pros are battling it

Out through four
qualifying heats.

-It's going to be cutthroat.
-Oh, mamma mia.

and only the best will survive.

We are way ahead
of the other teams.

[narrator] previously, group 1
showed off their sand specialty.

Yes, that's why we are called
the risky wild child.

[dawn] we're going to have
to bring our total a-game.

-Oh!
-We are here for revenge.

[narrator] marie-line and
isabelle had the magic touch.

Dee-dee-dee,
dee-dee-dee, dee-dee-dee.

[narrator] now, five teams
remain in heat number 2.

Whoa.

Oh man,
look at this awesome sculpture.

[brian] don't be intimidated.

[narrator] and they better get
into beast mode...

-Ah!

...To avoid extinction.

-Going for it.

Nobody got time for that.

Hopefully
it doesn't send us home.

race against the tide.

Welcome back to the beach.

Five teams left.

Only the top two teams
will make it to the semifinal

To face off against the top
two teams from the other group.

So, are you ready
for today's challenge?

-Yeah!
-Yes!

Since the dawn of time,

The tides have acted
as mother nature's clock.

And today, we're going to wind
that clock all the way back

To the beginning,
where dinosaurs, mastodons

And even a wooly mammoth
or two roamed these very lands.

We want you to bring to life
a beast from long ago.

-Oooh.
-Rawr!

So let's get prehistoric.

[dawn]
whoops. Watch your fingers.

[marie-line] yoo-hoo.

[alex] today's challenge is
to make something prehistoric

-Like the apex predators.
-Ah!

[alex] last challenge,

Marie-line and isabelle,
they brought it.

Very serious competitors.

And, yes, they're very talented.

[thomas] it's like a nuclear
bomb of confidence,

And I am a little afraid
of them.

-Blah blah blah.
-The small one's mean.

Today we are making a scene
between a human

And a mammoth that are fighting.

It will be two sculptures
that are connecting.

It's the ice age.

[isabelle] we are really happy
to win the last challenge.

-But now there's more pressure.
-Which is good. We love it.

We want to intimidate
the other sculptors.

[ludo] we're doing two forms
at the same time.

Now we know the sand
we do a little bit more risk.

Today we are making dinosaurs.

Predator babies.

It's like new life
coming out of the eggs.

With movement.
So they're like newborns.

I would love to win
today's challenge,

But everybody is a competitor.
Or a predator.

Yeah, today, predators.
Rawr!

And here we go.

[narrator] to win
this prehistoric challenge

The teams must meet
the judging criteria.

Movement, consistency
of carving, and texture.

Karen and rusty, we're back
with the first group

Of sand sculpting teams
in the second qualifying heat.

[karen]
this group is down to five

And only two will make it
to the semifinals.

[maestro] marie-line
and isabelle won the first heat.

[karen]
these girls came out swinging.

They're full of confidence
and great ideas.

[rusty] all the other
teams are going to be

Coming through
the winner guaranteed.

And today,
we're getting prehistoric.

We're going to see all
kinds of cool creatures.

[karen] ludo and inese
are incredibly imaginative,

So I know they're going
to come out

With a really quirky character.

Okay, a quirky character's cool,

But who's going to bring
the beast?

[rusty] carlos and francisco.

I think we can pretty much
guarantee something

Scary out of their minds.

Rawr. I love dinosaurs!

[carlos] we are going
to do a dinosaur

Going around a big volcano.

It's not cute.
It's creepy.

[francisco] we are going to give
many different textures.

The movement needs to be looking
like it's hunting.

Hunting for the competition.

Last challenge we make
a big sculpture.

We use all the plot,

But we have different
strategy for today.

We're going to do it smaller,
but better.

The hardest part of today's
challenge is to do the texture.

It needs to be pristine.

When I was a little kid,
I wanted to be an archeologist.

I was like the little nerd,

Naming off all the dinosaurs
by their latin names.

It's like a childhood
dream come true

To carve a giant dinosaur
in the sand.

[alex] today we're going to be
making a scavenger dinosaur.

It's going to be eating up
some eggs,

Hoping the mama doesn't
come back to kick its butt.

For movement it's going to come
in for an egg,

-Ahh!
-In the middle of the nest.

We want to make it look good.

[alex] you know, we're trying
to make the judges happy.

We're going back all the way

To the beginning,
the dawn of time.

[rusty]
we're going prehistoric, baby.

[maestro] what are you
guys gonna be looking for?

[karen] we're looking for
movement, we want this sculpture

To look like it's crawling out
of the beach, coming to get you.

[rusty] consistency of carving.
I want to see the same level

Of detail carried through
from the top

All the way to the bottom.

We want to see a lot of texture.

This is a great opportunity
for a lot of scales and fur.

[rusty] one thing I know for
sure with this group of artists,

We're going to see things
we never even dreamed of.

[dawn] we are adding a third
form on the side of this piece

Because this is where the
ammonite's head is going to be.

[brian]
we've chosen an ammonite,

The ancestors of the octopus.

It's got a beautiful shell
with perfect symmetry

And tentacles grabbing a clam.

[dawn] they're like the,
you know, shell dinosaurs

That crawl along the bottom
of the ocean floor.

We'll soft pack between the two

And then create a joining
from this one to this one here.

We bit off a lot last time,
didn't finish as well

As we'd like. So I think
we have to be more...

-Aware of the tide.
-Yeah.

-This is high enough.
-[dawn] yeah, I think so.

Huh, we're not ahead
of schedule, we're...

-[brian] on schedule.
-On schedule.

[maestro] ludo and inese.

You've got a machete
in your hand?

-Yeah.
-I know you want to slay

The competition,
but that's ridiculous.

Ah, it's just for big cuts.

Okay. All right.
You have to pound-ups.

What's going on here?
That's pretty ambitious.

We are making two dinosaur,
but they're small dinosaurs.

-But they're still-- rawr!
-Predators.

-Sweet but dangerous.
-Sweet and dangerous.

-Kind of like you guys?
-Yeah.

I don't know about you, though,
with that machete in your hand,

There's nothing sweet
about that.

Between you and me.
Who's your biggest competition?

[inese] last challenge,
marie-line and isabelle won.

They are strong and smart.

But we have the machete.
They don't have machete.

Ah!

[francisco]
I'm working in all of this here.

Because the upper piece
is very little

Is going to be only the volcano.

We need to do a big dinosaur.

-Like doing-- [growling]
-not friendly.

[carlos]
not friendly, like a beast.

[francisco]
working in different textures

And contrast to impress
the judges. All for win.

-Everything.
-Everything for win.

[carlos]
the sand is perfect today.

But we need to go faster
than the last challenge.

[narrator] two hours in
and the pressure

-For perfection is mounting.
-We can't just be really

-Narrow to that little piece.
-[dawn] no, I know that.

[brian] we just need more
sand and water.

[dawn] you can do that
all by yourself.

[brian] we've been working
together for over 25 years.

[dawn] it doesn't come
without some challenges.

-Yeah.
-So.

Oh, man.
Look at this awesome sculpture.

-We are perfect. Perfect.
-[brian] don't be intimidated.

[thomas] we got to step on
the gas a little bit.

-Just get something down.
-[isabelle] right now,

Our concept is taking
a lot of shaping,

Like, we are seeing the other
sculptures and yeah,

We have a lot of job today.

[marie-line] so it's going
to be fitting the whole thing

We want to do
in that period of time.

We made
some few mistakes so far.

-What the fuck is that?
-Oh, well.

Here at new river beach,
five teams are battling it out

For a spot in the semifinal.

Today we have to win.
Carlos, really.

We feel very late right now.

[alex] working on feathers
for the tail.

A lot of people don't know,

But the dinosaurs,
they were giant chickens.

Rusty, it's our second challenge

With our first group
of sculptors.

[rusty] and today
we're going prehistoric.

[karen] it has to be something
that feels alive

And has lots of movement.

[rusty] I want to see
consistency of carving

The same level of detail
from the beginning of the piece

All the way through
to the end of the piece.

[karen] we've asked
the teams to use texture,

But they have to use texture
in the right way.

[rusty] if there's
not enough contrast,

It's too much of a good thing.

Rusty, if you were a dinosaur,
what would you be?

I'd be a beast, man.
Raptor, fast and stealthy.

-I'd be a triceratops.
-Oh.

I'd have horns
and a cool-looking frill.

I'd be a party.

[dawn] what I love about
the prehistoric period is that

We don't actually really know
what they physically look like.

Like, the skin
and the eyes, exactly.

They're like really big,
big animals.

So it's nice to work with
that scale.

Your average bug
or lizard was like

The size of a building.
Bring that from my imagination,

Well, yeah, that's a lot of fun.

[carlos] when prehistoric come
to my mind, I just think about

A landscape with a dinosaur
going around eating his prey.

[francisco] but I wouldn't like
to live there.

-Carlos and francisco.
-[carlos] hello!

The shape of your sculpture
today is

Very different
from the last challenge.

Can you tell me a bit
about what you're making?

[carlos] a volcano here.

And there's going to be
a dinosaur going around hunting.

We have a lot of movement.

And there's going to be plants
all over here.

I promise you, different
textures and all my heart.

I want that you fall in love
with my sculpture

And win a challenge with you.

It is impossible.
You are difficult.

We're, we're pretty
tough judges. Yeah.

[siren wailing]

-Attention, sculptors.
-Oh, no.

It's such a beautiful day
for boat ride.

-Ah!
-[maestro] the tide has reached

Its farthest point, which
means she's coming back, baby.

-[isabelle] no.
-[marie-line] ah!

[francisco] oh my god.
Terrible guy.

I think it looks okay,
but it's still not quick enough.

I like to make faces.

Even for a dinosaur
or some prehistoric animal.

There's a lot of expressions
and feelings you can put in it.

-And I like.
-Yeah, I do. Yeah.

[inese] we will do artistic
tricks to push it.

[ludo]
this is nice for the movement.

-There's different textures.
-Yeah, it's nice.

I think the biggest challenge
is just to finish it

The way we wanted. More.

-[inese] no, no, it's nice.
-Okay, okay.

-Marie-line and isabelle.
-Hey, rusty.

You've gone huge.

-So this is really ambitious.
-Yeah poof poof.

We've got a wooly mammoth
coming out here.

[isabelle] and the first man.

We're looking for movement,
texture,

-And consistency of carving.
-Yeah.

We want that.
But do we have time for that?

-We're going to see.
-You had a win last challenge.

Yeah. Everybody saw
what we were able to do.

-So now we have to do the same.
-That's what happens here.

The team with the win
becomes the target.

More pressure, mr. Judge.

[dawn] we're trying to make
some really good texture.

It's really hard to get
the design into it.

[brian]
one of the trickier parts

Of making this ammonite is
having its symmetry perfect.

One, two.

[brian] if there's a little
bit of imperfection,

-People will see it.
-One. Two.

And so you got
to really make sure

You have the geometry
just right.

[dawn] they're going to get
smaller and smaller here.

[brian]
oh, don't throw the sand.

[dawn] sorry, sorry, sorry.

[carlos] I'm doing landscaping.

It's looking good.

Every time we tend to go
and do bigger and bigger,

And this time we promised
to do only this,

The main sculpture,
but we start growing.

I think that
that is our signature.

We are working
in different textures.

[carlos] texture,
with all the trees on

One side of the sculpture.

[francisco] I like it.
I feel confident with this.

I see, carlos,
you're adding a lot of texture

-With the mud stacking.
-[carlos] yes.

Be careful.
You know, there can be

Such thing as too much.

Three quarters
of this sculpture is

All pretty similar in texture.

[francisco]
rusty said too much texture.

I disagree with him.

Just remember, no one is safe
in this competition.

Yes, we know.

I'm going to buy
some glasses for rusty.

[francisco]
I don't agree with rusty,

Because you see this is
contrast with all of this.

The judges ask for texture

And we did a lot of that.

We are working with
all our effort

To make the contrast.
The piece not finished yet.

So it's like when somebody
is going to pick you up

To go to the movie and he
arrives half an hour before

And he tells you,
are you going like this?

[thomas] I'm doing
something crazy right now.

I'm going for it.

I'm cutting through right here.

[alex] thomas decided to do
some cut-throughs.

[thomas] underneath where
the both of the legs are.

Make the silhouette pop.
Another one right here.

It's really risky.
Another cut-through.

And then I cut through
where the neck is too,

It kind of circles around.
Going for it.

[alex] like, thomas,
nobody got time for that.

[thomas] hopefully it doesn't
send us home.

Gotta get this train moving
and get on to that face.

We've got jurassic park
out there,

But they don't have
too much time.

[rusty] alex and thomas have a
very dynamic feathered dinosaur,

But they haven't even started
carving the face yet.

To me, that's the focal point.

[karen] carlos and francisco
have created

A dinosaur scene with a volcano.

You want the beast
to be the focal point.

And right now, there's
a lot of forest going on.

[rusty] marie-line and
isabel have a massive piece.

[karen] they've got
to keep that quality up

Until the very end
of the sculpture.

And that's a lot of area.

At this level, we're really
looking for consistency.

What's consistently moving
is that tide.

[isabelle] we don't have
any time to do something.

We are only doing one leg.
Everything else is in the mud.

We have to forget about
some stuff we wanted to do.

We're going to finish it,
marie-line.

[marie-line]
we have to finish it.

[ludo] dinosaurs don't have
one little detail,

They have many details.

Their skin is not the soft,
smooth skin,

But they are like bubbles
and all the... [hissing]

It's going well,
but it's a lot of work.

[dawn] oh,
those girls are so talented.

We're feeling a bit,
nervous and rushed.

It's really hard to get the
little tentacles out the front,

Making them look like
they've got movement.

-It's coming, dawn.
-It's coming, brian. It is.

[brian] no, I mean the tide.

-[siren wailing]
-[maestro] attention, sculptors.

-No!
-No.

You have 10 minutes before
the tide hits the marker.

-No!
-This is your red flag warning.

-Ah, no!
-Okay go, go, go, go, go.

Time is just flying.
Come on, brian.

[inese] ah.

[francisco] aye!

[isabelle] we have to go faster.

[marie-line] go, go, go, go!

[maestro] that's it, sculptors.

Tide's in, time's up.

[marie-line] woo!

[carlos] this time
we promised to do only

The main sculpture,
but we went big again.

I think the judges are gonna
appreciate all the details.

[ludo] I would love to win,
but more I would love to stay.

[inese] we will go farther.

I hope we will live another day.

Oof.

We are not feeling
really confident right now.

Maybe it's time to go home.

[narrator]
now, it's up to the judges.

They'll be looking for movement,

Consistency of carving,
and texture.

Karen, rusty, I feel like I've
been transported back in time.

First up, ludo and inese.

[karen]
this is a fabulous sculpture.

[rusty] the faces on these
little baby dinosaurs.

-Gotta love it.
-These baby dinosaurs may be

Cute, but I don't trust them.

[karen] the texture is
in just the right spots.

[rusty] it's very crunchy
on top.

Contrasted with
the smooth bottom,

It really makes
the dinosaur pop.

The movement
on this is really nice.

The tail is up.
There's an arch through it.

[karen] the consistency
of carving overall

Is very, very good.
But I would have liked

To have seen maybe the egg shell
a little crisper.

But all in all, this is
an excellent nod to dinosaurs.

[maestro] brian and dawn.

They're really coming out
of the shell this competition.

[karen] this is
a beautiful ammonite.

The symmetry
on the shell gives it

An incredible amount
of movement.

And then you get
the dynamic action

Of the squid popping out.

Carving consistency
on this piece is spot on.

It's exactly the same finish
from the top to the bottom,

But right now
it's kind of homogenous.

It's almost one big form.

I think they could have
pushed it just a little further.

Yo, you guys are really being
picky today.

[maestro] here we have
carlos and francisco.

[karen] carlos and francisco
always take us

On a journey
with their sculpture.

[rusty] these guys made
an entire landscape.

You walk around
the sculpture, boom,

-There's a big old dinosaur.
-Looks like he's on the prowl.

The way the lava is flowing out
of the volcano,

It looks like it's erupting
and alive.

[rusty] they did use a lot
of texture,

But a lot of it's very similar.

[karen]
it's a beautiful sculpture,

But the dinosaur gets
a little lost.

I'd like to see the beast
be the actual

Focal point instead
of the volcano.

[maestro]
here we have alex and thomas.

[rusty] great sense of movement.
He's got his tail up in the air.

The head is down.
He's hunched over those eggs.

[karen] and they got the
expression on the face finished.

-I see evil in his eyes.
-Yeah, what is he up to?

[maestro] he's up to something.

[karen] there are four
cut-throughs on his piece.

That is a lot of risk
they took technically.

[rusty]
and it adds to the movement.

I love the way they use
the texture.

Just the right amount
in just the right place.

There's just one little flaw
in the consistency,

That bottom claw doesn't match
the one above it.

Ah, you guys
are killing me today.

I'm being very, very picky.
But we have to be.

[maestro] and finally,
marie-line and isabel.

[rusty] this is a big sculpture,
very ambitious.

[karen] the texture and movement
on the mammoth is awesome.

There's a lot of fur,
you can see how wrinkly he is.

[rusty] and also the expression
in the eyes,

It's, um, he's terrified.

Having won the first challenge,

There's definitely pressure
to keep up that level,

But they might have gotten
a little too ambitious.

[karen] the carving is
not very consistent.

Really rough in some spots.
It's a balancing act.

Well done, sculptors,
another challenge down.

It's getting kind of tough,
isn't it?

-Definitely.
-Yes.

Today, you were asked to get
prehistoric with your creations.

All of you transported us
to a time long ago.

But, one team is guaranteed
to survive extinction.

Today's sand champs are...

Ludo and inese.

Yeah!

-[inese] it's big compliment.
-[ludo] yes.

Builds confidence,
but the tide waits for nobody.

[rusty]
ludo and inese created

A magnificent prehistoric
creature.

Very well carved.
Very consistently carved.

[karen] the movement on
this piece was incredible.

You had a dinosaur
peeking out of an egg.

You had a dinosaur
on the ground, scooting around,

They used texture beautifully,

Exactly where
they wanted you to look.

Sometimes, less is more.

Ludo and inese showed
the other teams what it takes

To deliver when it comes
to covering all the criteria.

Congratulations.

You're one step closer
to the final.

Thank you.
