To find out whether motorhoming
could be suitable

for holidays with her husband
and daughters,

she is trying out
a rental home on wheels.

This one costs from £625 for a week.

She's a whopper.
She's lovely, isn't she?

She really is, yeah.

But at over 22 feet long,

it's more than a little
out of her comfort zone.

My first car was a Mini,
so it's a complete opposite of this.

But I did drive 15 people to France
in a minibus, and that went OK.

Sort of.

But this is over two feet taller
than your average minibus

and 1.5 feet wider.

Oh, she's brilliant! Look at this!

Shower, as well?

I didn't realise there
was a shower in here.

Yep, all the mod cons.

King-size bed there.

on each bunk there, couldn't you?

One county over in Oxfordshire,

a pair of
more experienced motorhomers.

Whether we take The Chunnel or
the ferry, we haven't decided yet.

Childhood sweethearts
former teacher Jane

and retired paramedic Andrew

have stopped at a campsite
on their way from Cumbria

to spend three months
touring over The Channel.

We met in school, back in 1981.

And then we officially got together
as boyfriend and girlfriend

when we were 15,

so we've been together
for a long time, haven't we?

It feels like a long time, yeah.

And in that time, they got married,
had kids and caught the travel bug.

We decided we were going to take
a year out and travel in 2007.

We sold the house,

put belongings in storage,
and then we bought a caravan,

and we travelled Europe
for a year with the kids then.

But traveling as a family of four
with a caravan wasn't an easy ride.

We kept saying, "Oh, it would be so
much better if we had a motor home."

The ease of getting around places

and not having to pitch up
a caravan.

And towing.
I towed quite a big caravan.

I mean, I did it,
but I just found it quite stressful.

Despite the challenges, since then,
they've dreamt of travelling again.

And now that their daughters
have left home,

they've managed to buy a motor home
to hit the road

with ten-year-old Buddy.

Well, I just love everything
about it.

We chose the layout specifically.

It's not a million-pound motor home
by a long stretch.

It's a very sensible motor home,
but we love it.

After 15 years of saving,

their sensible motor home
is a £58,000 Compass Avantgarde,

with a kitchen and a living area,

shower and toilet,
plus a French bed layout,

which trims one corner
off a double bed to save space.

In the van, the job sharing has
become very gender stereotypical.

I take care of the nuts and bolts
of the vehicle,

and then Jane takes care
of the inside of the vehicle.

Cos I'm very untidy, and Jane's
a far better cook than I am.

Fair enough. So, why don't you each
show us your own domains, then?

So, on board, we've got a toilet,

and it's what you class
as a cassette toilet.

So, it's basically a big receptacle
that you add a chemical to,

and when it's full, you empty it.

It's the unpleasant job
of the list of jobs to do,

but it's not that bad.

We don't need to see inside that.
Jane?

The thing about a motor home

when you're driving
is that everything rattles.

Kitchen roll is always good to be
able to just put into slots.

This probably looks
very strange for a drawer.

We just use these to keep everything
wrapped up when we're travelling.

And then we have our grill.

I have anti-rattle devices
for everything.

Do you know what?

We've ended up with the usual
kitchen drawer of junk.

I don't how we've done it,

but we've ended up with that,
even in here.

But there's one more thing
their kitchen needs.

I am topping up our water.

So, we hold about 100 litres
of water.

Depending on usage,

that would usually last us
five to seven days.

If we're wild,
we'll use a little bit more water,

because we'll be using showers
on board.

By going wild,

I think he just means stopping
at sites without shower blocks.

The show was really clever,
actually.

It just opens up then,
and we've got a shower cubicle.

So, it's just a case of me
not stealing all the hot water,

if I have a shower first,
and then Andrew gets the chilly bit.

It could be a tough three months
if you start doing that.

All set for the trip?

We are starting
in just over 24 hours,

and we haven't booked either
a ferry or the Channel Tunnel yet.

No, it's a bit last minute,
really, isn't it?

So, we are, really, literally,
going with the flow.

With prices for the shuttle
typically increasing

the closer you get to travel,
I'd get on that straightaway.

JILL: Across the Atlantic,
we're in California,

with Brits Margot and John,

who moved from Buckinghamshire
25 years ago.

We got married in 1996,

and then we moved out
to The States in 1997,

so we'd been married about
18 months when we moved out here.

Oh, going to the beach, doggies.

When we first came over,
our poor friends had to bring Bisto

and they had to bring Oxo Cubes,

Cadbury's chocolate
and things like that.

We would literally bring back cans
of Heinz Baked Beans in our luggage

when we travelled back from the UK.

One of the ways
they adjusted to American life

was by getting a motor home.

So, in England,
you kind of use your weekends,

and you do the cleaning,
and you do the garden.

But here, everybody gets away more.

You know,
and that's why we got the motor home.

We can go to the desert
in a couple of hours,

we can go to the mountains,
and we can go to Palm Springs,

we can drive to Las Vegas.

Those big US road trips
called for a big motor home.

This is our fourth RV.

We've always had
what they call a Class A,

which is a kind of bus-type RV.

After ten years with their last RV,

John and Margot have just upgraded
to a 37-foot-long Georgetown,

which they nabbed second hand
for £48,000

and spent a further £8,000
on renovations.

So, show us your rig.

So, this is the living room here.
We have a three-seater sofa.

The TV is cool,
and the fireplace is great.

I wonder how much use
that gets in California.

So, in the bedroom,
this is an American queen-size bed.

I think it's a king size in the UK.

So, left is the loo -
proper, flushing loo.

So, here we have the kitchen.

The stove
and the cook top are propane,

so they can be used any time.

That is the big,
residential-style refrigerator.

Plenty of storage to feed
ourselves for a weekend or more.

That could feed a huge family,
actually.

Yes, it would be,
it's a very big refrigerator.

And that big, domestic fridge
needs plenty of power.

Luckily, engineer John
is a dab hand at electrics.

I have installed
a 2,000-watt inverter

to give us AC power.

That means that you can watch TV
at night-time without having

a generator humming away
in the background.

Well, hopefully
John's DIY's up to scratch,

because they're packing
for a special weekend away.

I am 63 today.

I need waterproofs
that can fold away,

and they need to be lightweight,
compact and comfortable.

And hopefully, watertight.

So, Tomi's got three different makes
of packable waterproof trousers

Our most expensive in the test,
together, cost around £140.

At just over £70,
we have our mid-price option.

And finally, our cheapest
come as a set for under £35.

This one's stylish, I like it.

But we're not here to make
a fashion statement.

Overall, I didn't get wet

which is the main, main thing.

But I think this
is my favourite one,

because you don't need any extra
bag, or anything, to carry around.

So Tomi's chosen
the most expensive,

but will he stick with them
once he knows the prices?

But his second favourites are almost
half the price at just over £70.

I've got my list of sites
that I know I want to see.

as many as we can.

There's a thing called
"Munro bagging",

where people log when they've
climbed the Munros in Scotland.

So, for me, it just made sense
to say it was UNESCO bagging.

There are over 1,000
World Heritage Sites globally,

which UNESCO's picked for having
outstanding universal value.

It's taken us 15 years to save up
and get in a financial

and family position
where we can do it.

There's just so much to see and do.
So we're buzzing about doing this.

So, it's about enjoying life,
improving fitness

and having something
like a UNESCO list,

or target, gives you a focus.

What did t'girls used to call you
with your planning?

Oh, they called me The Itinerator.

Because I like to plan an itinerary.

We're actually en route

of seeing another UNESCO site
while we're on our way.

This 18th-century palace was named

a UNESCO World Heritage Site
in 1987.

So, welcome to the Great Hall.

This is the current home
of the 12th Duke of Marlborough

and his family.

That's Jamie Blandford, a very
distant cousin of Princess Diana.

And the Palace is home to
a wealth of British history.

And the reason why
the palace is here, in 1704,

John Churchill had a huge victory,

so he was awarded £240,000

and also the royal land
of Woodstock.

The Palace is worth around
180 million in today's money,

so that's quite some inflation.

And as for
the more famous Churchill...

Winston Churchill
was actually born here,

but he never actually lived here.

Of course, there's too much
to mention at Blenheim.

We could be here
for three or four hours.

In that case, let's fast forward
to the gardens designed

by the 18th-century answer
to Monty Don.

So, it's planted by

And they also feature
some very modern history.

I actually don't remember

Up near Denny in Scotland,

we're travelling to work
with nature lover, Gary.

These hills are where I got my love
for the great outdoors.

We used to come cycling here,
we used to come fishing here,

we used to come swimming here.

It's a real...
place really close to my heart.

And it makes
a rather scenic spot to test drive

his environmentally-friendly
camper vans.

The average customer is probably
someone who looks like me.

HE LAUGHS
It's someone who is middle-aged,

who is interested
in the environment,

who's an outdoors person, and
who wants to reduce their impact.

But I think the average person
who is becoming aware

of their impact
is across the board now.

But not only am I giving pleasure
through these camper vans to people,

but I'm also helping to save
the planet in my own little way.

His own little way is designing
and making camper vans.

2016, we launched the world's
first hybrid camper van.

We didn't know if it would take off.

You know, you spend
all this time and energy

putting something on the market,
you release it onto the market,

and you cross your fingers.

Well, crossing their fingers
must have worked,

as they've recently had to move
to a bigger factory,

where they can work on
up to ten vehicles at a time.

So, I'm the operations manager here.

I've been here
just over two years now.

I've been a manufacturer
in automotive

for about almost 18 years,
so I've been around.

CampervanCo's customised vehicles

start life as Toyota
or Ford hybrids,

so run on both diesel and battery.

Then John and his team
completely transform them.

OK, so we've got
a seven-day production line.

Bay Zero, the car comes in,
we strip the car out.

Once stripped,
the make over can really start.

Bay One, we cut the roof
and put the tent on.

Bay Two, we put the pelmets
and the LED lights.

Then, it's over to Bay Three
for the electrics,

including an underfloor heater.

As you can see, Bay Four,

it's starting to look
more like a vehicle again.

It's got a floor inside,
it's got the door cards,

it's got the curtains in.

And this camper's ready
for customised interiors,

like the bespoke kitchens
built on site.

It's like an IKEA kit,

where everything's pre-manufactured
across in woodwork.

By the time the van comes round,
we assemble into the van.

So, as slick as possible,
it's quite good.

The finished hybrid camper
can sleep four people

with seats which double
as rock-and-roll beds.

And it captures kinetic energy

to power the leisure features
like the kitchen.

These cars are second-hand cars,

however, when they leave here,
they look like new again.

Costing from around £25,000,

they currently sell
around 110 hybrids a year.

For me, I wanted to combine
really good design

with getting as many people
into the countryside as possible,

but with having
as little impact as possible.

To reach that goal, the team's
finally managed

to complete a vehicle that has even
less impact than their hybrids.

This is it. This is our
fully-electric, net-zero camper van.

From the Cotswolds to California...

We've only been out twice
in this RV,

so it's still new to us.

...where Brits John and Margot
are in their new 37-foot-long RV

heading to a state campsite
on Doheny Beach,

about an hour's drive south of LA.

I don't think I'd like to drive this
on the UK roads, to be honest.

It's fine over here, but it'd be
a little bit of a squeeze

in some of the lanes in England.

Friends and family will be joining
throughout the weekend

to celebrate John's birthday.

And they're relying on the RV

and its well-stocked fridge
to keep the party going.

Our daughter and husband, grandkids,
they'll come down.

we'll take our chairs,
go sit on the beach

and just watch the surfers,
have a sunbathe, whatever.

It's just very relaxing.

But relaxing will have to wait,

as Margot's spotted a problem
with the motor home's power.

The battery shouldn't be this low,

bearing in mind
we've just driven down,

and it's charged up before we left.

And now they're running low.
So I guess there's an issue.

So, we'll charge the batteries up,
and then we'll see how we go on.

Remind me,
who did the electrics again, John?

So, the generator's running
to charge the batteries

and keep the fridge going.

We are having a little issue
with the batteries and power

and so on, but...

if their batteries have charged.

Or, with no generators
allowed at night,

they'll be coming home
to a blackout.

It's charging it up now,
which is fine,

but there's absolutely no way
the batteries should've been lower.

Looks like there'll be more DIY
when you get home, John.

Solar panels, I think,
are probably gonna be a must.

Maybe two more batteries.

With enough charge for now,

This is our home on wheels.

The coach that we have now
costs just under $1 million.

There's a little bit of
Caledonian Forest there.

...Gary has recently unveiled
his company's latest innovation,

a zero-emissions,
multipurpose camper van.

And it's been the combination of
seven years' hard work and research.

And I want to show you it now.

There's no gas. There's no diesel.

Instead, it has a battery
with a range of up to 200 miles,

and Gary and his team have made
all the leisure elements

completely electric, too.

It's all been powered by our
high-powered lithium battery system.

And how that works,
it works from renewable energy,

it's charged by our solar panels.

And so we have a 355-watt
solar panel on the roof.

There are also some surprising ways
to save energy.

It's not that apparent,
but this unit here -

which has got the microwave oven,

it's got the sink,
and it's got the two cookers -

is completely removable.

And if you come round
the other side,

I'll show you how that works.

Cue some handy helpers.

One of the things that we have been
working really hard on

is reducing the weight.

The lower the weight,
the longer the range on a vehicle.

So, we made the units
in the Toyota Proace modular,

so you can literally
take the unit out.

That means this one van can be used
for both holiday stays

and as your day-to-day car,

and only be as heavy as you need
for each trip.

So, what we did is
we've put in runners

that you can connect in very easily
an extra three seats.

So I'm just gonna show you the seats
getting clicked in, how easy it is,

which gives you
up to seating of seven people.

And the modular furniture
isn't Gary's only hot idea.

This is our heated bed,
which has proven very popular.

You can switch it on either side,

and it heats your bum
and your back up.

The idea is to save energy
by heating passengers

instead of the whole van.

My bum's getting warm on this seat,
that was quite nice.

This hot-off-the-press design
has just been released

and costs from just under £70,000.

So, we're just a small company,
we've only got 30 staff.

So we're really proud of that,
and I'm really proud of my team

for getting that out there.

Me, I've got a great passion
of being in the outdoors,

and this is what camper vans
are all about,

just getting out there.

Over in the USA,

more than 11 million households
own an RV, and they go big with it -

something Florida couple
Rick and Lesley know a lot about.

We have been into RVing since 2003,

and we have been travelling
pretty much non-stop since then.

I introduced Rick to the RVing.

I grew up that way with my family,

and so that's how we ended up with
a 40-foot motor home at that time.

The couple's latest motor home is
a 45-foot-long Liberty Elegant Lady.

This is our home on wheels.

It has a large bedroom,
kitchen diner and two bathrooms,

plus has slides
which extend the living space

to 12-foot wide
when they're parked up.

The coach that we have now

RVing across America, exploring
different parts of the states,

the different terrains
that we see along the way,

as we're moving down the roads,
it's just amazing.

Now, Rick and Lesley have gone
a lot further than just

owning their own
million-pound motor home.

Over the past ten years,

they've been developing
a luxurious motor coach resort

for fellow RV enthusiasts.

We're a small, elite,
boutique resort.

High-end owners will gravitate here,

because they are with
like-minded people, basically.

When we first started
developing the resort,

when it was pasture land,

I never dreamt that it would
come out quite as nice

as what it actually has.

The site has 64 waterfront lots,

which owners can buy
to use as a base,

as long as they've not spent all
their budget on their motor homes.

River Landings lots range
from 320,000 to 1.65 million.

So, prices start
from around £260,000,

and only the finest coaches
are allowed.

We're a Class-A motor coach resort.

Ten years or newer.

If you have an older coach,

then we ask that you send us
a picture of it,

and then we... The management
has the authority to approve it.

So, not just your average
caravan park, then.

Each lot can have a shaded stand
to protect your motor home.

And there's the option of buying
an air-conditioned,

hurricane-proof storage unit
to keep it in while you're away.

Rick and Lesley
also set out to make sure

the owners are just as comfortable
as their coaches,

as each lot has space
for an 1,800 square-foot

individual coach house.

The coach house acts
as a secondary structure

they can go in
and entertain out of.

So, here, one of our nicest lots.

This one is on the market
at $1.65 million.

Around 1.3 million in sterling,
then -

or the average cost
of four bungalows in the UK.

So, you have
your king-size bedroom in here,

oversized bathroom with shower.

And then here is the mack daddy,

where we actually take this
indoor living,

and we push it to the outside.

The site also has a jetty
to moor your boat,

a bar to hobnob
with your fellow RVers,

golf cart garages,

and you can add
personal, oversized hot tubs.

We are very proud of
what we've done here.

Very proud of this man
for making it happen.

We set our standards high.

And with that,
our clients demand perfection.
