This has got to be the pier.

Jess: Guys, is that it?

Dave: It's definitely a Mustang.

- Matt: Whoa!
- Lee: Stop!

Narrator: Collectibles.

Jess: Holy Toledo.

Narrator: Classics.

That's a '32 Ford.
What the heck?

Narrator: And muscle.

Man: Maybe I don't want
to sell the car.

Narrator:
Risky conditions.

People die in the muskeg.
Trucks gets swallowed whole.

Narrator: Dangerous recoveries.

(shouting)

We don't have the power wagon.
Don't have tools.

We're dead in the water.

Matt: We save cars
before they're lost forever.

but I say was just crazy enough.

Narrator: After a long winter,
Matt and the team are on

an epic 2,700 km journey
from Southern BC

to the remote town of
Rainy River, Ontario.

We're here. We're back.

Words can't explain how
excited I am to get out there.

Well, Sager,
I can say with confidence

that I have never
flown this far east.

How far out are you guys?

So, you have Lee and Steve,

We have just crossed
to the Ontario border.

Dave:
The weather is fantastic here.

Hopefully there's cars to find,

but I'm positive they're here.

Narrator: With travel expenses
already adding up,

the trip to Ontario is
a massive risk for the team.

We're going to be taking on
some serious financial burdens

by going anywhere past Alberta,

but I didn't travel
all the way to Ontario,

and bring all of our gear
and all of our stuff,

and not have an idea
of what we're doing.

I've lined up some missions,
and this first one's killer.

We got this contact
that wants us to

find this truck on an island.

for the town of Rainy River.

This is totally something
new we've never done, Jess.

It's true.

I hope we find it.

Narrator: The team arrives
at their destination,

the railroad Heritage Museum...

- Hi, you must be Matt.
- Julie.

Narrator: ...to find out
more about the mission.

I came across this
photo of a... old truck.

Lee: Oh, wow.

Matt: What year you think
that is, Dave?

Dave: I would say a '37 Dodge.

My dream would be to bring this
back home where it should be,

along with the engine, caboose,
and the baggage car, right?

To tie it all in together.

Bell island, 1971.

Apparently it's
located on Bell island.

Narrator: Bell island,
located on Lake of the Woods

on the Canada-US border,
is situated north west of

the former lumber mill
town of Rainy River.

The Canadian National Railway
came to Rainy River

in the early 1900s.

Supplies to the town
were brought by train

and in the winter were
trucked across frozen lakes.

These ice roads
provided the only access to

frigid islands settlements.

I'm hoping you guys will
be able to help me out.

An afternoon to find it.
This will be easy to do.

Jess:
"Easy to do?" Typical Matt.

It's not going to take us
an afternoon to do this.

It's going to
take us a lot longer.

I've been doing
this for a while now.

This truck would have
been at this station.

I mean, I would have
lived here back in the day.

before he gets back.

Narrator: For the trip
to pay off,

the team will need to fill
the rig with valuable cars,

but with Matt and Jess
out on their own,

this puts added pressure
on the rest of the team.

Luckily for Dave he's already
spotted a yard filled with cars.

- Hi.

My name's Dave and, uh--

Huh, coincidence. So is mine.

Pleasure, Dave.

Yeah. Driving by
a little while ago

and I spotted your Chevelle.

Oh, I had a lot of
fun in that car.

Yeah, I bought that
off my brother Lenny.

He was going to
turn it into a stock car.

I said, "No, you can't do that."

So, I'm just curious,

are you interested
at all in selling?

Well, the Chevelle
is not for sale.

Okay.

It was my late brother's.

Buyer Dave:

and I'm trying
my darnedest not to look at

that Corvette in his garage.

really turned me on.

It's small, its unique, it's--

You can park
the darn thing anywhere.

A very affordable
small sports car

with headlights mounted
actually on the hood,

and they called him the Bug-Eye.

Yeah, it was handled
like a race car.

Wow. You know, the frame rails
and stuff and the tubs here,

nothing's rusty on it.

It's a little roached
in the bottom here,

but all fixable.

All the gauges are here.

I used to cruise around
with my dog, Buddy,

a black-and-white collie.

Take the top off
and cruise around.

It's a happy little car.

I'm definitely not that expert

when it comes to European cars.

But if they option is right,
the money is correct,

and all things are go,
I want to buy that.

To be honest with you,
I was going to ask you

what do you think

what I can spend on it.

that didn't make it all the way,

but I got to drive it

Narrator: Following up
on a lead from Jess,

Steve and Lee locate
local car collector Duane.

Steve: Lee and I are really
hoping this tip pays off

so we can be the first to
put in car on the trailer

so when Dave phones
and wants us to put his car on,

it'll be, "Too bad, Dave,
it's already loaded."

This is a nice car.

Duane: It's a 1980 Trans Am.

I always wanted one
when I was in high school

and finally came across
one after I finished school

and picked it up
and started working on it.

Yeah, I'm loving the T-top.

This is a great looking car.

I can tell Duane's put a lot of

care and attention
into this car.

Motor's a 455
out of a '71 Pontiac.

Lee: How many horsepower?

Probably around 400.

400 more than stock.

(all laughing)

Lee:
It's a beautiful looking car,

but I'm reading
the play on this one.

He's not ready to sell.

Judging by how much
you love this car,

I doubt it's for sale.

No, this car is not for sale.

I have to enjoy it
for a while first, so.

I knew it too good to be true.

I do have a few other
vehicles up in the backfield

if you wanna take a look.

Lee: What do we got here?

Steve:
We got a Pontiac definitely,

but it's got a bit of rust--

- Lee: Yeah.
- --on the rockers here.

I mean, it's nice
that it's a two-door.

As far as us being
broad with what we buy

and who we can sell to,
it's a very specific person

that likes the Pontiacs.

Yeah, even for parts it doesn't
look like there's much there.

the good stuff's been taken.

Narrator: While Steve and Lee
make their way down to

pick up the Sprite,
Matt and Jess continue

their search for
the abandoned railway truck,

flying high over
Lake of the Woods.

Jess:
It's a frickin' huge lake.

It goes it to Minnesota,
Manitoba, and Ontario.

Doing an aerial search
in Ontario is something

we're just not used to.

Prairies, open spaces, fields?

Sure, but here,
dense forest, rock,

and as much water
as there is land.

We're totally
out of our element.

I mean, I love to save history
and I'm all for it,

but I think we might
have overestimated.

I didn't actually look on the
map for how far it is out here.

Like, that's a hell of
a good T we're doing.

Jess: Yeah. Matt thought we
could do this in an afternoon.

I don't know
what he was thinking.

See anything on that side, Matt?

No, no.

There's no time for
Steve and Lee to dwell

on the bust at Duane's place.

They now have
to extract and load

Dave's Austin-Healey Sprite,

but with severe weather looming,

they'll have to move quickly.

They can't risk using the steel
crane in a lightning storm.

It's lookin'
a little moist here.

Well, that area looks soft,
and this wood,

I don't think
the trailer's getting around.

Ideally, we'd use the crane
to lift the Sprite out,

but with the debris and mud,

there's no way of getting
the truck back there.

Oh?

- Oh, yeah.
- What do we have here?

- Lee: Tucked away.
- Steve: Yeah.

this might be a win for Dave.

I hate to admit it, but yeah.

Dave's coming through
and we're, uh,

we're falling behind
it sounds like.

Steve: I'm liking that we see
the front pretty good, right?

We just pop that up in the air
and kind of just drive it out.

Like, the way it's kind of
pointing is the way I think

it wants to go.
Probably came in that way.

Lee: Yeah. Where do you
want to hook it to?

Steve:
Doesn't even have the bumper.

Lee: See what's under there.

There's just no structure.

Absolutely nothing to attach to.

Without being able
to attach to the bumper

and pull from there,
we're sort of left with

a really radical decision.

I have to kind of
hook it to the body

and hope it kind of holds.

- Lee: Let's do it.
- Steve: See this pin

- where the bumper was?
- Yeah, yeah.

We can get just enough.
I know it's a risk,

this is on the body,
and don't tell Dave I did it,

but hook a D-ring up in there.

(thunder rumbling)

Hear that? Is that thunder?

I'm not running
if we hear thunder.

We gotta hurry up.

I just want to
get this car in the rig

and get the heck out
of there in one piece.

(rumbling)

Ah, I'm getting...

Steve: There we go.

Lee: Start taking up the slack.

Wait. Slow!

(grinding)

(shouting)
Stop!

Narrator: The team has
traveled to Northwest Ontario

on a mission of mercy.

I'm hoping you guys will
be able to help me out.

Matt: An afternoon to find it.
This will be easy to do.

Steve:
Doesn't even have the bumper.

Narrator: But Steve and Lee
are struggling with what

should have been an easy rescue,

(shouting)
Stop.

Steve started to pull on the car

and the body moved
away from the frame.

The rest of the car
stayed exactly where it was.

(thumping)

- Okay. That's good.
- Yeah.

No one will know we did that.

Plan B.

Lee: We're going to put
a strap through the wheel well,

and bring the power wagon
as close as possible.

Fingers crossed.

More to the, uh--
Yeah. Right there. That's good.

- Alright.
- There we go.

First one on the truck!

(grunting)

I mean it's Dave's, but--

It's small and it's European
and it's underpowered,

and a little rusty, but--

We're getting there.

Narrator: The next morning
tension builds as Matt and Jess

continue to search
for Bell Island

and the lost
Canadian National Railway truck.

They're burning fuel,
money, and time,

but still no sign of the truck.

Can we get closer
to this Bell Island?

Yeah I'm a couple
nautical miles out,

but we're getting closer.

Matt must be
feeling the pressure.

I know that he doesn't
want to let the museum down,

but we're running out of time

and I know he just
wants to be out there

hunting for cars
to fill that semi.

Oh, there's something
yellow up here.

That's a little
yellow school bus.

Jess: Really?

Aw, man. When I was a kid I used
to love watching that show.

The Magic School Bus. Oh.

That was the dream
when I was a kid.

I think it's
the very first vehicle

I ever fell in love with.

I know how much Matt
loves the Magic School Bus.

So I think this is
the perfect opportunity

for us to divide and conquer.

Okay, well,
why don't I drop you off

and then you and Dave will
to follow up on this bus

and I'll follow up with

(whirring)

Narrator: Dave arranges
a meeting with the owner of

what he and Matt hope will be
a classic Wayne short bus.

Hey, Matt, check it out, man.

Matt: That's just like the one
I used to watch as a kid on TV.

I've been looking
for one for six years

and haven't been
able to find one.

These Wayne school
buses are valuable.

I mean, they are built so well.

I can totally see someone
converting one into a camper,

a delivery vehicle,
maybe even a dragster.

- Hey.
- How are you doing?

- Good.
- Run out of gas here or what?

- Almost seems that way.
- Hi.

I literally can't wait
to check out this bus.

It's absolutely killing me.

Oh, I just love how it's,
like, the lichens on it.

Some greens
and some grey's, blues.

You can't make that.
This is exactly what you want.

You just clear coat
that lichen right on there.

Matt's so excited.
He's in love with the patina,

but I want to check that engine.

Make sure, you know,
it's worthwhile.

- Dave: Yeah, yeah.
- Matt: The gauge is inside.

Same exact one as our truck.

Just a school bus.

There's no question this
is the Magic School Bus.

I mean, if anyone knows,

The real question though,
is will Duane sell it?

So, what's the story on it?

This is the first bus
my dad drove in.

He drove this bus I think for--

'til about 1967,
it's always been here.

It was here before I was born.

Your family doesn't
sell a lot of things.

Brother and sister
rode in that bus.

They might be a little
upset with me if I sold it.

I get it. People have a personal
connection to their vehicles,

but it's just a shame having
it sit here in the field.

I mean, we're going to give it
a chance to get back out there.

Get to a car show
or get going down the road.

It was your dad's truck, right?
He bought it.

- Mm-hm.
- Why did he leave it here?

Seems to be the way
they did things back.

It was probably wore out
as far as a school bus.

It's an old vehicle,
it just got parked.

Matt: Over 50 years
of connection to it with

your dad and your mom and you.

Yeah.

It's a great lawn ornament.

It's almost a shame.

Maybe it is time for the--
move the old girl along.

It's-- it has been
sitting here for a while,

so I think I'd be
all open to sell it.

I guess if the price
is right, maybe. Yeah.

Duane, would you mind if we

I almost feel like it's not

arrive at Duane's farm

to rescue Matt's
prized school bus.

Okay let's walk us
through this thing, right?

This is obviously
a critical lift.

Big, it's bulky.

We're in a marshy
a little area here.

We got to lift,
get out of the suction.

Narrator: Having spent decades
out in the field,

the bus' tires are sunk
deeply into the ground.

We got to get it out.
That's going to be tough.

Get it straight in line
with the back of the trailer

and then we pull it
on with the truck.

That's it right there.

Narrator: Steve and Lee can't
risk getting the power wagon

and the trailer
stuck in the mud,

so they'll keep
the power wagon on the rig

and use it to pull the bus up
and out of the mud.

Now, remember go slow,

cause Matt doesn't
want to twist this thing.

Nice and easy.

Slow, Steve. Slow.

It's not going to budge.

The suction's
just way too strong.

Yeah, that's it.

That's it, eh? Okay.

I know this girl, she's--

Bottomed out.

Yeah. Nothing moved?

Not much. Not much.

The power wagon's
too far from the bus.

We're going to have
to bring the rig closer

and risk getting
stuck in the mud.

Narrator: They move
the power wagon closer.

Steve: Okay, let's try that.

Narrator:
But now, Lee has another worry.

- Sounds good--
- (clanking)

This doesn't look good.

The winch on the power wagon's
making some funny noises.

You keep an eye on this.

I'll keep an eye
on the truck, okay?

(whirring)

Bus is stuck. Not good.

Did it move at all
from your side?

No.

I think we're hooped.

Narrator: Matt has
discovered his dream vehicle.

A 1940s Wayne School Bus.

Matt: This is great.

Narrator: Steve and Lee
have had no luck freeing it

from the mud.

I think we're hooped.

Narrator:
But Lee's got one more idea.

No, we're not.

We're going to
use the crane as well.

Tandem lift. You on the winch,
me on the crane.

We need the crane to lift it.

It's got way more
power than the winch.

Booming in.

So we're going to
use the crane to lift

and the power wagon
pull at the same time.

Right there. Yeah.

(whirring)

Yeah!

(whirring)

Steve:
Nice. Yeah. Keep coming. Yeah.

(whirring)

(Steve cheering)

It's going to be up.
So swing--

Yeah, that's perfect.
Right there. Beautiful.

Narrator: Jess continues
her search for the railway truck

somewhere over Bell Island
in Lake of the Woods.

Jess: I have flown an extensive
grid pattern over Bell Island.

If the truck was on there,
I would have seen it.

We've got to be
missing something.

Narrator:
With nothing to show after

another day's aerial search,

Jess arranges for
the team to meet up

and rethink their approach.

Well, I hope you guys
had better luck than we did.

Well, Dave found, uh--

Dave: The Bug-Eye, I think
it's a cute little machine.

Should do well on
the island I suppose, eh?

What's the deal
on the school bus?

Like, obviously that
takes up a lot of the truck.

Do we have, like,
a buyer for that?

There's, like, a plethora of
people who'd want to build that

and there's none out there.

One of a kind.

Anyways, Jess and I, we found
Bell island in like 20 minutes.

There's nothing on Bell Island,
but trees, rock, and marsh.

Is this something that you guys
think you should pursue,

or should we just,
you know, like, give up

and let them know, like,

this thing maybe can't be found?

I know. I know it's out there.

I'm not ready to
give up on the dream.

That's why they wanted us,

because we dig deep,
we get-- we get our man,

and I know it's out there.

So, we're just
missing something.

Just gotta step back.
We have a look at it

through a different lens.

Jess: I feel like,
we should just chat up

one of the floatplane
pilots in the area.

Float pilots,
they're lying low, right?

It's what I did
on the west coast.

Floatplanes are crucial
in this region.

They're the only way to access
a lot of these remote islands,

and let's be honest,
there's more lakes than

there are roads at times.

Float pilots is killer.
I think that's something that

you got a connection with,
you speak their language.

It's good idea.

I mean, it sounds like
we're going to, like, kind of,

you know, me and Steve are
going to go look for cars.

- You're going to look for cars.
- Yep.

we got our marching orders.

Lee: Yeah.

Narrator: On their final
day in Rainy River

and with time running out,
Matt and Jess go in search

of a local floatplane pilot
who may know the whereabouts

of the elusive CN Railway truck.

- Afternoon.
- Hello!

What's going on today?

We're on a little
bit of a quest

and we're hoping
that you can help us.

We have been searching
for this one truck

that is on Bell Island.

I've flown over
there quite often,

but I'm not familiar with
any objects you're looking for.

If he hasn't seen it,
we've come all this way,

spent all this money
on a wild goose chase.

Have you guys tried
Bell Island Outpost?

Have you looked
into that area at all?

So, up here to the northwest
is where Bell Island is.

If you go west about
another 15 miles or so,

there's what's called
Bell Island Outpost.

That's not even
that much of a stretch.

Like, it's literally
the same name.

It's just a different island.

Well, that makes sense.

Bell Island isn't the same
as Bell Island Outpost.

We've been looking in
the wrong place the whole time.

So, people use to, you know,
do a lot of freighting across

the ice and use
these old vehicles

and everything they
could to transport fuel,

lumber, propane, all kinds of
things for their camps.

This is real remote here.

I mean, there's not a road or
anything within about 30 miles.

There isn't any air strips
nearby that we could get on

the ground or maybe a beach?

Lake of the Woods
is so high right now.

The water is four
or five feet high.

So, a lot of the beaches
are underwater.

Narrator:
Luckily for Matt and Jess,

one of the pilots
offers to drop them off

at the Old Bell Island Outpost

on the way to a fishing camp.

Narrator: While Matt and Jess
fly out one more time,

Steve and Lee are still
looking to load up the rig.

We were asking around
and people were saying,

"If you're looking
for classic cars,

you've got to talk to Pat."
So, here we are.

How's it going?

Hi. What can I do for you?

Uh, we're just in
the uh-- the neighbourhood

and we were told that
you got quite a bit of stuff

that you might want to sell.

I have a whole
yard full of stuff

I'd be willing to part with.
You're welcome to wander around.

Steve: This is more
of a truck yard, eh?

- Lee: Wanna look at 'em?
- Steve: No.

Lee: Why not?

You can just tell
why they're back there.

Lee:
That's a Cougar right there.

Whoa, that is nice.

The Cougar looks promising.

Now we just got to see if Pat's
willing to make a deal on it.

Yeah, the only made
2250 Eliminators in '69,

and they only sold 100
of them in Canada.

It's a 428 Super Cobra Jet.

It's a drag pack car.

Back then we were into
street racing, you know?

into that I imagine, eh?

in the window of the vehicle.

"Oh, yeah, no chance we
were going to get this one

- to begin with.

But there's one

That's a 1931 Model AA
factory ambulance.

This is a really

the buildings are all gone,

this beautiful piece of property
was a tourist camp at one time.

Narrator: With a barge
on its way to collect

the prized Canadian National
from the island,

Matt and Jess must figure out
a way to haul the truck.

100 meters to the shoreline
without a power wagon.

Steve, Dave, and Lee
are on the mainland

and there are no floatplanes
to bring them to the island.

Matt and I are
the only ones here

and we've got to extract this
vehicle out of the forest.

Narrator: First, they must clear
a path through the forest,

avoiding the largest trees.

Pulleys anchored on
two trees will guide the truck

along the path as they haul it
using Randy's hand winch.

Once the truck arrives at
a pulley, it's disconnected,

allowing the truck to turn
toward the next pulley

and finally to the shore,

where it can be
transported by barge.

We're going to have to
get a clear path from here

to the water, but we got to
go around all these trees.

I've never done
an extraction before,

but Matt's making it
sound like it's easy.

So, I guess we're going to do it

and I don't want to
let the team down.

to haul a lost railway truck

out of an isolated
island forest.

We've kind of come this far.

We're dead in the water.

If we only had our tools,
the crane, the power wagon,

this would be like no problem,
like 10 minutes. Out, done.

Being on a secluded
island with nothing.

This is-- this is not
going to be easy.

This is going to be an uphill
battle with a whole way.

We need power.
We need horsepower.

(horn blowing)

Could we use the barge?

There is no other
equipment on this island.

The barge is our last hope.

You get fuel tankers
and all sorts of stuff on that.

Yeah. Propane trucks,
fuel trucks, excavators.

Wally, would you say you're

Using the barge is risky,
full stop,

because there's
no brakes on a barge.

If we miss our first turn
and push the truck into

the pulley up against a tree,

that barge is the power to
rip the whole frame out from

underneath that truck
and leave just metal tin behind.

It's really dangerous.
It's probably one of the most

dangerous things
we've ever done.

So I need to watch
what the barge's doing.

I'm gonna be on the radio.

Jess is going to be
driving the truck,

and we're all going
to do the best we can

with the very little
we have to communicate,

to try and finagle
this thing out of there.

you did the first time,
that's all we need.

right against the tree

and this truck
ain't going nowhere.
