you've got a '42 Hudson?

[Matt] Ho-ho!

I've never seen one of
these with my our own eyes!

If we can get it out,

it's the biggest win
of the trip by far.

[Lee] It's startin'
to pop. (Bleep).

[Lee] We've just
destroyed a piece of history.

[Announcer] In northern Canada,

Pilot Jess is our

mission and I pay the bills.

- Yes!
- Said it couldn't be done.

[Announcer] They rescue

them all over the world.

People say we're crazy, but I
say we're just crazy enough.

[Announcer] Matt and
the team are on the hunt,

this time for
classic pickup trucks

from the 1940s to '60s.

[Lee] Back on the road! Yow!

[Announcer] The
classic car world

ignored trucks for decades.

But that's all changed now.

In the last three or five years,

the truck market has
basically tripled in value.

And if you want to find
good ones worth building,

you gotta go where
nobody else goes.

[Narrator] From their
homes in southern b. C.,

the team is driving two
days to central Canada

to the remote farming region

of north battleford,
saskatchewan,

the oldest community
in the province.

Dave's family has lived
here for generations.

♪

It's good Dave knows the area

because this is the
furthest we've gone to hunt.

♪

My grandparents came
here in early 1900s.

They settled here

along with many other
people from different regions.

And, it's a beautiful
place to be.

♪

[Announcer] So far afield,
it's more important than ever

for the team to fill the rig

to offset the
extra travel costs.

Steve and Lee are
driving the back roads,

visiting old homesteads in
search of classic pickups.

Bingo, got one.

Yeah, right there
on the top of the hill,

50 cars! Old cars
and we're going in.

How's it goin'?

[Janice] Okay? What
can I do for ya, today?

We were just driving by

and we noticed a couple
of vehicles from the road.

Would you be willing
to part with one of them?

Depends... If I like ya.

[Lee] Yeah? Go ahead.

Well, this is my buddy
Lee and I'm Steve.

- Janice.
- Janice?

- Nice to meet you, Janice.
- What were you looking for?

We'd be happy to look at
whatever you have, there.

We're interested in
trucks if ya got trucks.

I guess so.

That'd be fantastic.

- Little tour?
- Awesome.

[Janice] I've been on
this place for many years.

[Announcer] Like
many homesteads,

as the family has grown,
so have the vehicles.

[Lee] Wow.

There's a little Ford
right here, eh, Steve?

[Steve] Yeah. Beautiful.

I think it's '49 if
that looks right.

[Steve] Look at
the colour on that.

[Lee] It looks in
unreal shape, too.

My husband worked
on restoring it all.

[Steve] It's a beauty.

He passed away three years ago.

Ah...

So, this is a family
sentimental kind of truck.

Sorry to hear that, by the way.

Just because we can
see the cars, you know,

it doesn't mean
they're for sale.

They've been there a long time.

There's probably a reason why
they've been there a long time.

[Janice] This is a
special truck to me.

[Lee] Why is that?

[Janice] Because that's the
one we took on our honeymoon.

[Lee] Oh, really?

[Janice] It was a welding truck.

[Lee] Oh, what do
we got here, Steve?

[Steve] Ah, a gmc step side.

[Lee] We like this.

[Steve] Oh, yeah.

It's just like a
'68 or something.

Ooh, '69.

I wanna say something like that.

I love old trucks.

I got one. 1966 Chevy step side.

We use it every summer,

so I get it that, like,
vehicles like this,

like this truck become
like a family heirloom.

Is this something
you'd part with?

Or, did you go on
dates in this as well?

That would be telling, so...

As far as what would
it take to get rid of it?

I mean, I'm open to
trade or anything like that.

How much can you work?

[Lee] Steve's available?

[Steve] Lee's a strong
guy too, you know?

I don't know.

It might get the
neighbours talking.

I mean, it was nice
talking with Janice

but this stuff here

doesn't look like
much is it for sale

and looks more like a
kind of family museum.

So, we're leaving empty handed.

[Announcer] In the
Stinson, Jess and Matt

are flying north
from north battleford,

looking for trucks
in farmers' fields.

[Matt] Well, there's a nice
homestead here on the right.

It looks like there's 4x4s,

do you want to land?

Yeah, they look
really good. Let's do it.

When I was flying commercial,
I woke up in the morning

and I knew where I was going
to fly from point a to point b.

Getting to fly the Stinson
and searching for vehicles,

I wake up in the morning
and I have no clue

where I'm going to
go, which is pretty cool.

[Matt] We've gotta be careful
when we walk up like this.

[Jess] Don't get shot
off somebody's property.

[Matt] It's like walking in
the woods with an animal.

You gotta talk loudly like
you're not being sneaky.

[Jess] Hello!

How are you guys doin' today?

[Jess and Matt] Good.

What can I do for you?

We noticed in the back

it looked like you
had some old trucks.

- You wanna go take a look or...
- Sure.

[Jess] Do you collect vehicles?

Kind of a passion of mine.

So, I add a little bit each year
when I come across a deal.

And, I'm going to retire someday

and maybe fix some, but...

[Matt] Oh, nice,
look at this one.

[Man] And there's the
one that's all original.

Very few are chrome
grille and this one has it.

And it's a runner.

[Matt] Oh, it runs, too.

Oh, that's so cool!

That dash, dead
centre like that?

Ever since I was
a kid, I loved Jeep.

They're awesome.

Is it something you'd
ever consider selling?

No, I had to add
it to my collection.

I better keep it.

I love it up north
because homesteaders

have a lot of vehicles
because they keep everything.

Yeah, I can't part with her.

But what I'm seeing is, I don't
think they want to sell them.

[Announcer] Matt and
Jess keep searching

but the miles add up,
the fuel gets burned

and no trucks appear.

It's wild that it's
saskatchewan farm country

of all spots that we
haven't found any trucks.

Gettin' a little defeated, here.

I don't have a good
feeling about this.

Matt is used to
getting what he wants.

So, that really gets to him

when things aren't
going as planned

and he gets
frustrated very easily.

And, it's all known to us.

[Announcer] Yet to
find their first truck

or even a solid lead,
the team meets up.

Jess and I flew
around all morning,

burned like 700 bucks of fuel.

And we didn't find a
single fricking thing.

Trucks are hot, right?

Like, that's why we're
out here hunting them.

On days like today I wonder,

"are we gonna to hit the Mark?"

I see where you're frustrated.

This isn't me frustrated.

Super [bleeping] frustrated.

Yeah, Matt's young.
He's impatient.

So we have one crummy
morning. So what?

We're going to find them here.

[Jess] We're just running
out of time, though.

Obviously, you're driving 16
hours, you know, in a semi.

We're fillin' the truck
with something, right?

As long as it's
not a wasted trip.

Sometimes it is a wasted trip.

Like, I've been out here
before you came along, Lee.

Dave and I spent four, five days

and we got one crappy vehicle.

And that was it, it sucks.

I've been up here
for all my life, right?

30 miles off the
main beaten track,

will guarantee you, you'll
start spotting stuff, so.

There is a homestead
on every quarter.

So, is it a little
legwork? Of course it is.

You have to work
a little harder.

Hunting cars like we
do comes with big risks.

When you go for three days,
you spend $6,000, $7,000

and then you realize you
have nothing on the trailer

and you go home.

I mean, it's not a charity.

It's a business.

[Announcer] Dave takes Matt deep

into the bush to meet up

with an old car
collector friend, Kevin,

in search of a lead.

[Matt] Hey, Kevin.

[Kevin's wife] How are ya?

Hey, Matt!

[Announcer] Maybe he knows
where the trucks are hiding.

[Kevin] What brings
ya up here to visit?

We're looking for
trucks, actually.

We spent the morning
flying the plane

and went to probably 30,
40 different homesteads,

like, we're coming
up dead ended.

And it's just...

Yeah, all the
obvious stuff is gone.

There was no interest
in the years back

and either they've been crushed

or, you know,
they've left already.

If you were us
looking for old trucks,

I mean, is there
anyone in the local area

that might have an idea?

Well, offhand I know
somebody that goes

around to a lot of farms
is our pest control officers.

Pest control officer?

They're hired by the
municipality to go check

every farm, every year to see
if they have a rat infestation.

They get into all
kinds of farm yards

that nobody else would be in.

I didn't even know
that was the thing.

Yeah, yeah, well, it's a
big thing in saskatchewan.

I never thought we
would be chasing down

a pest control
officer to get a car.

But, hey, you never know
what you're gonna get.

Brilliant idea.

Really? That's awesome.

Kevin's a really cool guy.

He's got stuff that
amazes me sometimes.

Since you're here,

would you mind showing
off some of your Hudsons?

I know Matt hasn't seen them.

[Kevin] Let's go have a look.

Yeah, I'd love to see them.

- Comin', dear?
- No, you guys have fun.

[Kevin] Follow me!

I understand the
mission is to find a truck

but you know what,
there might be a Jewel

in the rough in the back
and we should go take a look.

[Matt] Holy cow.
Look at the Hudsons!

These are '34s, right?

[Kevin] Yeah. 34, '35.

[Matt] Nobody has '34.

And so these are all
coupes, you know?

So they're very
desirable body styles.

Hudson's, they made a nice car.

They're something to treasure

because there's
just not many around.

You know, you look at a
Hudson, it's a Rembrandt.

It's a work of art. They're
gorgeous and fast.

That was important.

John Dillinger himself had one

and that's exactly
what he used it for.

His getaway car! Amazing.

[Kevin] This is one of
the more solid bodies I got.

It's in really good shape.

Can you hear it? "Buy me, Dave."

[Laughter]

"Buy me, Dave."

[Kevin] "You're
falling in love!"

are in saskatchewan

hunting old trucks
on Dave's home turf

but they're striking
out everywhere.

[Announcer] After getting a
tip from Dave's friend, Kevin,

Matt asks about buying
one of his Hudsons.

Would you ever sell one?

[Sighs]

I'd like to get
one done original.

I'd hate to sell something and
then find out you needed parts.

I've tried for years.

[Laughter]

I'm in line.

When I met Matt, we
were friends instantly.

Here is a guy that is
a reflection of myself.

Same interest, knows his stuff.

He's a true spirit.

A lot of people don't know
that Hudson made trucks

for a number of years
and the front ends

on their trucks were
basically car front ends.

But, Hudson trucks
were low production.

[Matt] Yeah.

- To find one of them is...
- Hen's teeth.

Yeah. Very rare.

I've been looking, but I
haven't come across one yet.

Talk about rare. What
do you think of this?

[Matt] I think it's awesome.

[Kevin] Any idea
what it would be?

[Dave] It's definitely European.

It's a saab '93!

[Kevin] You know, saab is
a Swedish car manufacturer.

[Dave] Ugly!

Not ugly. This is artwork, Dave.

The saab is small, it's compact.

And it's complete.

Ugh, it's so weird it's just...

Sweet. I love it.

Meep-meep!

You take your $100,000
car, you cruise down the road.

I get more looks every day.

We're hunting pickup
trucks. That's the goal.

But if the price is right
on something interesting

and different, we
can't turn our back on it.

We've got to pick it up.

That's not my type of vehicle.

I'm an American type of car guy.

I love the American
vehicles, not my choice.

I'd be willing to
let it go for 2,500.

[Dave exhales]

I think we'll take
any leads, so.

A lead to whitkow, amazing.

My grandparents
came from the Ukraine

and moved in whitkow
in their early 1900s.

My dad was born
and raised in the area.

Yeah, whitkow. It's my backyard.

It's a great sign.

[Revving]

[Announcer] With
no time to waste,

Lee and Steve load up
the first purchase of the trip.

Matt is following
up on the truck lead

and Dave's off to meet
Don, the pest control officer.

He's heard he's on a
job at this derelict farm.

[Door bangs]

- [Dave] Hello!
- [Don] Right here!

[Announcer] Keeping rats at bay

means he gets into
many forgotten places.

Dave asks him if he might
be able to help with a lead.

I don't really snoop
around the yards too much...

[Dave] No, no, I
understand. I understand.

Yeah, but I see things.

I went into this yard and
he has an old shop there,

and the shop door was open.

And there was an old
truck sitting in there.

An old Ford.

I don't know if
you're interested.

Oh yeah. Yeah, for sure.

something-or-other.

Don's giving me a lead.

We're obviously
on the right track.

[Announcer]
Meanwhile, Jess and Matt

are in the Stinson going
further afield in their hunt.

Matt has sent Steve and
Lee to whitkow to meet up

with a guy named big
Dave who has trucks for sale.

[Phone ringing]

Yeah, Dave.

Yeah, no, my team's
going to be there a. S. A. P.

They should be there already,

I don't know what's
going on, but.

Steve, something's
frickin' not right here.

[Steve] The road's
pretty bumpy, too though.

[Lee] Yeah.

Where are those guys?

[Jess] You sent them the
coordinates, didn't you?

[Matt] That was hours ago.

It feels like
something's sticking.

For [bleep] sakes, Steve.

[Steve] What?

[Lee] The front end is blown!

[Steve] What? [Bleep]!

Steve, something's

[Steve] The road's
pretty bumpy, too though.

for their time in saskatchewan

To make things worse,
Lee and Steve are now late

for a meeting with big Dave,

who has trucks for sale,
because they've got a flat.

- But, we got a spare, right?
- Yeah, but we got no Jack.

[Lee] We don't have a Jack.

No. It's in the other
truck. It's in Dave's truck.

[Bleep]

If we lose this lead, Matt's
gonna be pretty (bleep).

It's not our fault
that the tire went flat

but it is our fault that
we don't have a Jack.

We're burning daylight.

I know Matt wants us...

[phone ringing]

Hold on one second.

I'm getting a phone, here.

- Speak of the...
- [Steve] Really?

the truck sorted out here.

We've got the
crane on the trailer.

Why couldn't we just use
the crane to lift our own truck?

but I'm not 100%.

lift the truck with the crane

that's mounted on the trailer.

I mean, I've never
tried this before.

But looking at
it, it should work.

I'm underneath putting
blocks under the axle.

I mean, if that truck
falls, I'm under it.

It's just all coming
down on top of me.

I mean, that was
amazing that it worked.

I mean, I've never
seen that happen before.

Lee is not just a
pretty face, I guess.

[Announcer] Matt has
teamed up with Dave

on the ground to chase leads.

So, Jess returns to the sky

and goes a ways
off the main highway.

She spotted something hopeful.

[Jess] Hey, Matt,
can you hear me?

Hey, I'm just flying over a
homestead that has trucks.

Okay, awesome.

I will send you the coordinates
and talk to you soon, okay?

[Dave] So, I knew it.

We travelled out 30-mile range

and we're going
to get those leads.

What she described to us
sounds like the place we want to be.

This is the homestead
that we've been looking for.

[Matt] How's it goin'?

[Jack] Good.

- I'm Matt.
- I'm Dave.

- Jerry.
- Jack.

- Jack? Dave.
- Jerry.

Pleasure. Nice
to meet you, Jack.

[Matt] I don't know
if you heard earlier,

a little red plane
that buzzed over top.

That was our friend, Jess.

She let us know that there's
an old truck on the property.

[Jack] You want to have a look?

- [Dave] Sure, sure.
- [Matt] You guys have the time?

[Jack] Oh yeah, we got
more time than anything else.

[Matt] All right.

[Light laughter]

Yeah, there it is.

Nice. Well, that's a '40? '41?

'40 or '41, yeah.

Looks like it's got an
international back half

and a Chevy front half.

It was bought from a
neighbour in about 1950.

[Matt] It's like the
jungle just took it back.

That's neat.

That's the original
steering wheel.

[Jack] It is.

[Matt] With the
old knuckle duster.

You used to grab hold of
that and spin the wheel with it.

And then when the
front tires got stuck,

it'd spin too fast, it'd
break your knuckles.

Old cars and trucks
are like time machines.

They literally roll
us through time.

And, for me, they're
all important artifacts

and they all have their own
individualized story attached.

Speedometer doesn't
go back to zero on it.

'58 or '59, the neighbour's
barn caught on fire

and dad jumped in that
truck and drove it so fast

that the speedometer
never did come back to zero.

Wow.

[Laughter]

He topped it out.

What a gorgeous
truck! Fat fenders,

bug-eyed headlights,
smiling teeth of a grille.

That particular design,
the modern type of vehicle

that chev and gm
went on direction,

was to give it more
of a flair, more appeal.

Can't lose with the
look of this baby.

Is there a chance that you
guys might be interested

in selling the truck?

[Jerry] 5,000.

- [Laughs]
- 5,000?

Well, thank you for your
time, uh. I'm just gonna...

But I want you to be happy so,
what's going to make you happy?

but the day is
disappearing fast.

Over an hour late, they still
need to meet up with big Dave.

[Lee grunts]

This is my buddy, Lee.

We heard, kind of, that
you had some trucks.

[Big Dave] Show you
a few of them, I guess.

- [Big Dave] In the rough?
- [Steve] Yeah!

[Big Dave laughs]

There's a '58
Fargo. There's a 413.

[Steve] Oh, yeah?

[Chuckles]

Looks like it had
a few late nights.

[Big Dave] Well, it was
probably all the same night.

[Laughter]

It's all together but
it's just a tough thing

back where we are, the
Fargo aren't as popular.

I mean, I don't know if they're
popular around here or not.

It was more of a farm truck, eh?

More of a farm, yeah.

That thing went
like stink, though.

[Laughs]

Get granny out of the
boneyard and put her to work.

I mean, really not finding
much of any sellable trucks

or resealable
trucks in this yard.

Matt may be right to be worried.

[Big Dave] I'm a Chevy guy.

[Steve] What do you
have as far as Chevy goes?

[Dave] Oh, it looks
like an apache to me.

[Steve] Complete apache.

[Big Dave] No, somebody
borrowed the emblem.

[Steve laughs]

Where? Oh yeah, well...

[Announcer] Chevy's light duty
trucks were known as apaches.

This could be the killer deal
the team so desperately need.

We'll take it!

It's a '58 apache, 1958.

I mean, this is a 50th
anniversary for Chevy.

It's a big year for Chevy.

It's got a unique style,

the kind of never-ending
curves throughout this truck.

I think it's perfect for a swap

onto a chassis that
has 4-wheel drive.

And with that clean
body, it's a perfect match.

[Steve] It doesn't look
like a lot of rust, though.

It didn't see a whole
bunch of salt, this truck,

it probably didn't
ever hit a highway.

[Steve] Oh, yeah?

[Big Dave] So, how's
those sills? There's no holes.

That's a big plus
for these trucks.

And this truck
hasn't been driven

on salted roads
in the wintertime,

so I mean, it hasn't had

that kind of corrosion build-up.

This is what we're looking for.

This is what we want to get.

And now we just got to hope

that Dave's willing
to part with it.

- She's a sweetheart.
- How much of a sweetheart?

I've never seen one this nice.

Probably 10 years since
I drug another one home.

I gave that one away,
though but you aren't kin.

No. Well, I am single. I mean.

of classic pickup

the crew is after.

but having travelled so far,
they have yet to break even.

And without even
enough to cover their costs,

this could be the
end of the road.

have to kill this tree, Lee.

[Lee] We're not going

There's no sense saving a truck

and killing something
at the same time.

Trunk is basically growing
right in front of the tires.

And it's out.

Couldn't have done it any

[Narrator] Loaded
up and trucking,

they head out in search of more.

Following up on the lead
from the pest control man,

Steve speaks to a farmer
named Gordon, who gives him

another tip about what
might be a Hudson truck.

He mentions a guy named
Curtis and he has a truck

then he says a Hudson truck.

Oh, geez, I got
just excited about it.

"A Hudson truck? Really?"

Like, I can feel the hair
in the back of my neck

stand up because a
Hudson truck is so rare.

We're running out of time.

I gotta chase this one down.

[Narrator] Matt calls everyone
together to talk strategy

for their final day.

- Beautiful.
- The meat slice.

[Dave] Tell me
about the truck, man.

[Lee] Look who showed up.

[Steve] Oh, I hear
somethin' behind me.

- [Dave] Hey, guys.
- [Matt] What's goin' on, here?

[Steve] We just thought we'd
take a little roadside break.

Well, I would
have thought, like,

you'd be conjuring
up ways to fill the truck.

We're waiting for leads
or purchases, right?

You just gotta wait
for me all the time?

I'll just sit back,
relax and let daddy-o

figure out how to save
the day every time.

And what the hell did you buy?

You bought that piece
of (bleep) Up there.

That's not a truck.

I'm not trying to fight, Dave.

I don't feel super
confident, right now.

The whole team knows
coming out here is risky

and we don't have
anything to show for it.

and when he's golfing, it
sets a precedent and a tone

that we can all just
do our own thing

and not stay focused.

After I got the tip
about the Hudson,

I've been looking for Curtis.

I'm looking for a

Talking to a guy named Gordon.

He thought that you have

or had an older truck
in the barn someplace.

I haven't thought about
that truck in a while,

- but he's right.
- What is it?

Well, it's a '42 Hudson.

You're telling me
you got a '42 Hudson?

- [Curtis] I do.
- Holy (bleep). Wow.

This is one of
the rarest trucks.

Apparently only 50 of them,
or near 50 of them were made.

If it's a 1942, it's like
looking out in the field

and there's a sasquatch
standing there.

That's what this truck is.

Rare.

in al's collection but
so far he's not selling.

[Matt] This looks
like a studebaker.

one of the most artistic

Finally, this truck

from a friend of mine.

He went by Teddy bear
or bear like we called him.

And he said, "so I'm going
to take you out to my barn

and show you my stuff."

There is no less
than 28 Hudsons.

I looked at these
Hudson's and I say,

"I see a red Fender
in the garage.

I said, 'what's that'?"

He said, "that's the holy grail.

That's a '42 Hudson
pickup truck."

- Unbelievable.
- 47 made.

My buddy passed away
and I helped his brother

get rid of some of
the other vehicles

and he gave me first
chance and I said,

"that's the one I want.
I want the holy grail."

Well, it's in that
one there, now.

Holy.

I don't think my heart
can stop pounding already.

[Curtis] You go for it.

Desperate for a glimpse

of this mythical motor,
Dave risks life and limb.

Curtis, this thing is awesome.

It's a '42 Hudson.

I've never seen one in person.

until that thing is in

Hudson was ahead of their time.

They hired probably one
of the first women ever

to help design the truck.

And because of the designer,

it was actually marketed
specifically for women.

It was attractive, it
was stylish and still is.

and we're buying vehicles

and you're going
to break my heart

if I have to phone 'em and
say, "hey, it's not for sale."

It's not about the money.

It's kind of about the
memory of my buddy, bear.

the team has tracked down

one of the rarest
trucks ever made.

found us a '42 Hudson.

[Lee] I just can't believe
there's a truck in there.

[Matt] It is looking
pretty bad, though, eh?

[Lee] Easy.

Oh wow, that's definitely a '42.

It's real. I've never seen one
of these with my own eyes.

Like, this is the kind of stuff

that will be heard
from here to California.

This is the kind of stuff

They made, like,
a handful of these.

This truck could make
our whole trip worthwhile.

Amazing.

We gotta get it
out of here, though.

sure it's the truck

that's actually holding it up.

The crane will be
able to lift this roof off.

- It's just a matter of like...
- Will it stay together?

then if it doesn't stay together,

we've just destroyed
a piece of history.

[Matt] There's a
kicker, too here, Lee.

Dave paid for it already.

He paid for the truck.

we can buy the truck, but
we buy before we touch it.

If we can get it out, it's the
biggest win of the trip by far.

It's probably the biggest
win this year for us.

[Announcer] Having
found the holy grail,

an ultra rare Hudson truck,

the team need to get
it out of a derelict barn.

The plan is to access
their prize from above.

The first step is to
cut enough rafters

so the roof can be broken free.

Then, using the crane,
Lee can peel back the roof.

This will give them enough space

to rescue the Hudson
from its ramshackle prison.

[Clacking]

Watch the nails.

This is a complicated
extraction.

I completely trust Steve and Lee

but three is better than two.

And I thought it better
if I jump up on the roof.

They take care of the
crane and all the rigging.

[Announcer] First,
Matt needs to cut holes

for the crane straps
to hold the weight.

[Matt] Just looking in there
is anything falling on it?

I know Matt knows
what he's doing.

I mean, he's up there
with the chainsaw.

He's got to cut
through the joists

and maintain a
little bit of structure

so that he can support himself.

If Matt makes the wrong cut,

he's falling down
into the Hudson.

And now, me and
Steve got to recover

not only the Hudson, we've
got to recover Matt, too.

I mean, recipe for disaster.

This one, an even lift
so it doesn't snap in half.

- What do you think, Lee?
- I like it.

to put it back on the road.

got me a little worried.

bit stressed with the team.

said in hindsight

when you're looking
back on a load like this.
