We have just watched the end
of a shocking story.

the topic of tonight's show.

where it all started

The story takes place
in the western suburb of Paris,

a residential area

Behind those walls,
mysterious gardens.

In this suburban area, one can enjoy

had drawn the world's attention.

and focused on his research.

The office of Mr. Joly, attorney,

is located in the center of town.

It is quite tricky to say
when dramatic events really start.

They are quite often part
of the victims' lives

before they even know it.

In this case, I think
everything started

when Dr. Cordelier left his will

in the care of his friend, Mr. Joly.

The two men met while doing
their mandatory service

and are now almost neighbors.

As he reads the document,
Mr. Joly is quite surprised.

The name of Dr. Cordelier's
sole legatee

is totally unknown to him
and sounds quite odd:

"Mr. Opale."

A few weeks later,

around 10:00 p.m. One night,

Mr. Joly was closing his shades.

Suddenly he noticed a little girl

walking down the street,
unaccompanied.

Mr. Joly was shocked that parents would
leave a child to walk the streets

at such a late hour.
