0:27 the tough and dark days of our struggle 0:30 tanzania is one of those countries 0:33 among the front-line states 0:36 that offer sanctuary 0:38 to our movement and to our leaders 0:41 and president nirere as we all know 0:45 was the leading african leader 0:47 who championed the liberation 0:50 of 0:51 various countries 0:53 in the on the continent 0:55 and countries like tanzania and many 0:58 others 0:59 sacrificed a great deal 1:02 almost stopped their own development 1:04 to ensure 1:06 the total freedom 1:08 of all other countries that were still 1:10 struggling against colonial rule 1:12 tanzania 1:14 stands amongst those countries that we 1:16 hold in highest regard and it is for 1:19 that reason that we ask president 1:22 kikwete to come forward 1:24 and pay his condolences 1:27 to president nelson mandela 1:30 overseas where the military wing of the 1:32 anc operated from dar es salaam chris 1:35 hani who was later murdered operated 1:37 from the indar which is why this 1:39 reference to tanzania and its importance 1:41 in the armed struggle 1:43 excellency 1:46 jacob zuma 1:49 president of the republic of south 1:51 africa 1:53 deputy president halema molante 1:56 mama grasa 1:58 michelle mamawini 2:00 members of the madiba family 2:04 the majesty 2:06 king of lesotho 2:08 heroic highnesses 2:11 excellencies heads of state and 2:12 government 2:14 and of ministers 2:17 members of the diplomatic corps 2:20 and representatives of international 2:21 organizations 2:24 phelomonas 2:25 comrades and friends 2:29 i bring with me fraternal greetings 2:32 as well as greetings of solidarity from 2:34 your brothers and sisters 2:36 of the united republic of tanzania 2:40 they've asked me to convey to you 2:43 our deepest condolences 2:45 to you mr president 2:48 to the madiba family 2:51 and to all 2:53 the people of south africa 2:55 for the passing of his excellency 2:58 nelson holisha mandela 3:00 the first black president 3:03 of the new south africa 3:05 and the former president 3:07 of the afghan national congress 3:10 the people of tanzania would like you to 3:12 know 3:14 that you are not alone 3:16 they are with you 3:18 during this difficult period of morning 3:22 and they will be with you 3:23 thereafter 3:26 they are saying your grief is our grief 3:29 your loss is our loss 3:32 nelson mandela was our leader 3:35 our hero 3:36 our icon and our father 3:39 as much as he was us 3:42 the people of tanzania have lost a great 3:44 friend the view of tanzania have lost 3:48 a great comrade 3:50 in arms 3:53 comrades 3:55 president mandela 4:00 had a long association with tanzania 4:05 it that it dates back to the times of 4:07 the struggle 4:08 for independence and liberation here in 4:11 south africa 4:12 and in tanzania 4:15 our two sister parties the anc 4:18 intern of the canadian afghan national 4:20 union 4:22 later chamachema pinduzi 4:24 enjoyed the special relations 4:28 with each other 4:31 we supported each other at the time of 4:33 need 4:35 it was no accident therefore that after 4:37 the anc 4:39 decided 4:41 to take the struggle to the next level 4:45 and form the i'm doing from country 4:47 season 4:48 after peace 4:50 after peaceful means 4:52 seemed to be futile 4:54 that islam 4:56 was madiba's first port of call 4:59 in january 1962. 5:07 he left south africa secretly 5:11 through the chuana land at that time 5:15 northern rhodesia 5:18 into tanganyika through the town of 5:21 mayor 5:23 and then from there 5:25 arrangements were made for him 5:27 to come to darysla 5:31 his mission 5:34 was to seek support for the struggle 5:37 and a place to train 5:40 the mk combatants 5:43 congress and friends 5:46 he met 5:47 our first president 5:50 now late 5:51 julius campbell ready 5:55 and i'm humbled to say that i have also 5:58 come with me 6:02 his widow 6:04 mama maria 6:18 indeed 6:19 this visit of madiba 6:23 was later to become 6:25 a landmark 6:27 event 6:29 which had the profound effect 6:32 in changing the course of history of 6:34 this great nation 6:36 culminating in the fall of apathy 1994 6:39 in the birth of a new south africa 6:44 though at first 6:46 president nierele 6:48 had some reservations or hesitations 6:52 in his discussions with madiba 6:55 about 6:56 when and how to initiate the armed 6:58 struggle 7:00 he 7:00 accepted madiba's requests 7:04 and provided members of the mk 7:06 both 7:07 permission to live in tanzania 7:10 and places to train 7:14 i'm sure 7:16 the anc and mk veterans gathered here 7:23 to them names like kongwa 7:26 mugagao 7:28 morogoro 7:38 sound familiar 7:42 and when we mention them they may even 7:44 rekindle 7:45 the nostalgic memories of the life they 7:48 lived in tanzania 7:49 sharpening their tools and skills 7:52 of defeating apathy 7:58 but president went further 8:03 beyond availing places to live and to 8:05 train 8:08 he offered tanzania's own moral and 8:10 material support 8:13 mega as it was but it was very symbolic 8:16 to us 8:18 but also marim was instrumental in 8:20 mobilizing regional and international 8:22 support 8:23 for training 8:24 and arming the combatants 8:27 indeed 8:29 this applies to all other liberation 8:31 movements 8:32 the pac 8:36 impeller 8:38 swappo suako 8:39 zano 8:41 zappo 8:42 and frelimo 8:50 besides that 8:52 tanzania was generous enough 8:58 to give 9:00 cutters of the liberation movement 9:03 travel documents 9:09 passports 9:11 and all that what is needed 9:13 and when necessary 9:15 some of them assume the tanzanian names 9:29 when madiba came to tanzania he had no 9:32 passport 9:37 but from tanzania i was going to lagos 9:39 to accra 9:41 then lagos and addis ababa 9:45 he was given 9:47 a tanzanian travel document 9:56 it facilitated his movement 10:01 and i know a number of 10:02 you use transcendent travel documents 10:07 i don't know if taboo returned his 10:17 comrades and friends 10:22 madiba's trip to darussalam 10:25 was to change the fortunes of the anc 10:28 after being banned by the upper third 10:30 regime here in south africa 10:34 the anc found a new home 10:36 in tanzania 10:38 from where it operated 10:44 organized 10:46 spearheaded 10:48 and prosecuted 10:51 they struggled 10:53 from tanzania the anc was able to reach 10:56 its colors 10:58 and other members who remained and 11:00 operated from inside 11:02 south africa through discrete means of 11:04 communication 11:06 from tanzania the anc was able to have 11:09 messages 11:10 reach the broad masses of the people of 11:12 south africa through publications 11:16 say chaba 11:18 and dedicated radio broadcast 11:22 radio freedom 11:33 broadcasted from direct 11:37 as a matter of fact the government of 11:38 tanzania 11:40 had built a special radio station 11:43 for the liberation movement 11:48 the anc 11:51 was able to get back the voice 11:54 that was denied to them by the upper 11:57 side regime 11:59 comrades and friends 12:02 there is another 12:03 interesting thing about madiba's first 12:06 visit to tanzania in 12:08 1962 i would like to share with you 12:12 in order to keep the visit discreet 12:16 he did not stay in hotels 12:19 he stayed at a home 12:21 of tano's treasurer who was then the 12:23 minister for commerce and industries 12:26 mr santerabi zafarian seroswai who is 12:29 now late 12:31 on his departure 12:34 when he is on a trip to accra lagos 12:36 addis and algiers he left behind his 12:39 boots 12:42 at mr swai's 12:44 home 12:45 in the hope that on his way back 12:48 would pick up the boots 12:51 unfortunately 12:52 he could not pass through that islam 12:54 again 12:55 and shortly after arriving 12:57 back in south africa he was arrested 13:00 and imprisoned and spent 27 years in 13:03 robben 13:04 island but fortunately 13:07 this why family kept the boots 13:10 awaiting his return 13:13 in 1995 13:14 when mandela was president 13:18 the pair of boots were handed back to 13:21 him 13:31 by mrs vikki silosoi the widow of the 13:34 late 13:35 sirozui 13:37 who died in 1994 shortly before madiba 13:40 became president 13:42 i have brought mama vikki and surosway 13:44 with me to bid farewell to their special 13:47 guests 13:48 and friends 13:57 comrades 13:59 after his release from prison 14:03 and after visiting lusaka for the 14:04 meetings of the 14:06 national executive committee of the anc 14:09 madiba came to darussalam 14:11 it was not again by accident 14:14 he was met 14:16 by the largest crowd 14:18 tanzania has ever seen 14:20 receiving a foreign dignity 14:27 and that record 14:28 has never been broken 14:31 but mind you we terrained heavily that 14:33 day 14:36 as chiefs when when the chiefs come it 14:38 always reigns 14:41 that's the belief in our part of the 14:42 world 14:44 but people never left their positions 14:48 they thronged the airport 14:50 lined the streets of darussalam braving 14:52 the rain 14:53 to see their hero 14:55 their icon 14:57 their leader 14:58 nelson polisha chamandel 15:01 indeed 15:02 mandela's charisma is unmeshed in modern 15:05 times 15:07 of course 15:09 he visited the facilities of anc 15:12 morogoro 15:14 iringa 15:15 and spent the night 15:18 with a call with the combatants of mk 15:20 atim gagao 15:21 their training base 15:23 comrades and friends 15:25 i've narrated all these stories and 15:27 anecdotes to let you the people 15:30 of south africa know how far back 15:33 the current excellent relations between 15:34 our two friendly countries 15:36 and between the anc and chamber of 15:38 champions have come from 15:42 it is not by accident 15:44 that south africa and tanzania enjoy 15:46 excellent bilateral relations 15:49 we are close friends and allies 15:52 because our community because our common 15:54 history 15:55 unites us 15:57 we see eye to eye on many bilateral 15:59 regional and international issues 16:02 we support each other at regional in the 16:04 international forum comrades 16:07 it is none other than our founding 16:09 father 16:10 first president marilyn julius nirelle 16:13 and the founding father of this new 16:15 south africa 16:17 president nelson mandela who are 16:19 responsible for this friendship and 16:22 cooperation 16:24 they built very strong foundations for 16:27 our ballot relations 16:28 that is why i said at the beginning 16:31 that madiba is very much our leader 16:34 our hero our icon and our father as he 16:39 is to you 16:40 that is why 16:42 your sadness 16:43 grief and sorrow are ours as well 16:47 that is why we also join you in 16:49 celebrating the life of this great man 16:52 come listen friends 16:54 as we mourn the death of this great men 16:57 let us recommit ourselves to continue to 16:59 strengthen 17:00 the excellent relations which are so 17:02 happy to exist between south africa and 17:04 tanzania 17:06 let us also continue to work closely 17:09 together 17:10 at regional and international forums 17:12 to advance his ideals 17:14 for a strong 17:16 sudden 17:17 a vital a 17:19 a vitalized african union 17:21 and an effective united nations 17:23 bold enough 17:25 to fight 17:26 injustice 17:28 to fight for equality of all nations and 17:30 all peoples and let us fulfill his wish 17:34 to see developing nations 17:37 working together in unity and solidarity 17:40 in pursuit of their rights and in their 17:42 quest to lift themselves from poverty 17:44 and prosperity 17:46 and you my brothers and sisters of south 17:48 africa 17:50 madiba has lived his life well 17:52 you should leave his legacy 17:55 he has left behind a vibrant democracy 17:58 he left behind a new nation where black 18:01 and white south africans live together 18:03 harmoniously 18:05 a nation where nobody has denied his or 18:07 her basic rights because of the color of 18:10 his skin 18:13 a nation where blacks can also prosper 18:17 unlike in the past 18:18 when they were condemned to live in 18:20 scholar 18:21 their profession 18:22 and their state-class citizens in their 18:24 own country 18:26 we know 18:27 not all that he stood for has been 18:29 achieved yet 18:31 it is full hurry also to assume that all 18:34 the yields of the former pathetic system 18:36 will be corrected in these 19 years 18:45 nonetheless 18:46 a lot has been achieved 18:48 although much more has to be done 18:53 the agency government 18:56 is doing it 19:02 please stay the course 19:04 and always strive for great excellence 19:07 remain united as a people 19:09 and remain united as a nation 19:12 this way 19:13 he will honor this great statesman 19:16 this great sign of this soil 19:19 in a manner that he would be pleased 19:23 if he were alive 19:25 this is the best way to live his legacy 19:29 we'll always hold you in your prayers 19:31 you are not alone 19:33 hamburglar dr mandela 19:43 and relishing 19:44 describing 19:46 the role that 19:47 tanzania played in supporting the armed 19:50 struggle not just in south africa but in 19:52 other parts of africa in zimbabwe and 19:55 mozambique among them 19:57 and 19:59 talking about things that were extremely 20:01 thank you 20:02 secret and dangerous things to know 20:05 only particularly 20 or 30 years ago 20:09 describing the mosquito boots that 20:11 nelson mandela left behind 20:14 and which were returned only after he 20:16 left prison over 27 years later14361
