I'm from Latin America.

This region of the world which is dreamed of by so many

its strength, its mountains and rivers

the joy and resistance of its people

a region marked by the brutal way

in which we were conquered.

First, it was for gold and silver,

and sugarcane, coffee, oil.

They even took the lives of those who extracted and harvested

very little has changed.

The vessels of the first conquistadores transformed into newer ones.

sacrificed.

After my studies in journalism in Columbia, I went to work in Europe.

For several years, I coordinated a network of NGOs,

tracking the relationship between the EU and Latin America.

From that position, I could see the unlimited thirst of states and
companies

for natural resources.

We started to wonder,

who are the new conquistadores ?

How do they operate? How far are they willing to go?

In the face of this pillage? Who is resisting?

And how do they confront these global actors?

With these questions here, I was 20 years later,

ready to go back to what has been called for many centuries,

the land of abundance

my first destination is Kagamarica in Peru.

At the time of conquest, they called it the crown jewel.

One of the country's most important mining regions,

paradoxically, also the poorest one

I came here to meet maxima Konya.

The land where she lives is surrounded by Latin America's largest gold
mine.

I came to listen to her story about the battle she won,

but became even more interested in the battle she lost.

since 1994.

We work the land
because we are peasants.

My parents were peasants.

We grew up in the fields
and they taught us how to work.

Mother Earth gives us
everything we need.

But now they say that
our land contains gold.

That is why the company
wants to take our land.

They want to kick us out.
Where will they dump us ?

I wanted to see the mine up close.

What did Yanacocha do to you?
When did it all start?

In 2010, Yanacocha started.

They came with their staff.

They claimed this land
does not belong to us.

This land belongs to the Yanacocha
mining company, they said.

We have the property title.

So we showed it to them:
"Here are the documents!"

The first time,
there were 6 people.

They did not kick me out.

The second time,

there were 50 people.

We are humble people.

Look what the mining company
comes to do with police forces.

They hit my mum
and my sister.

Look where the engineers are.
Far away!

They don't even come
fix the problems themselves.

They rather
send their staff.

Look how they came
with machinery!

A mining company should
not act this way.

They come and take
what belongs to others!

Look what they did
to my family.

My mum fainted.

Please we need your help!

My husband went to the
NGO Grufides in Cajamarca.

There he met
the lawyer Mirtha.

She helped us
spread the news.

This is when
I first met Maxima.

Her story was so severe,
that I doubted its truth.

We are talking about
a formal company.

Presenting itself as respecting high
social and environmental standards.

So when Maxima told us that
they violently tried to evict her,

that they came with police,
with private security,

that they beat her,

and that they almost
killed her daughter...

To me, it was too much.

And I even doubted.

So I asked her to show me
her blows and wounds.

She then got undressed.

This gave us the elements
to take on such a delicate case.

We tried to activate
justice in our favor.

We took the complaint
which Maxima filed.

Not only had it been archived,

but the company had filed a complaint
against Maxima and her family.

And their accusation
was given due procedure.

To me, this was shocking.

I understood that the judicial system
works for those in power.

"Máxima Acuña:
three-year suspended jail sentence."

The mining company sued
Máxima and her family

claiming they had illegally
usurped the land.

They had no qualms about
saying outrageous lies that

Maxima entered and assaulted
10 police officers.

There were 10 police
officers injured.

It even made us laugh!

So I told her
"Super Maxima"!

How could you
hit so many police?

Then get inside and
take over the land?

No to Conga!

that Maxima's case

was not an isolated one .

These are the minutes of
the Blue Lagoon's inspection.

11 AM, on Sunday 24th of October

We inspect that the lagoon
level has dropped.

There is no sign
of mining activity.

In the case the mine
started new activities,

we would call a general assembly
with all our people,

all community watchers, from
Bambamarca and Celendin.

I just want to tell you that

we are all fighting together in order
to protect our water, our land.

We know that without water
we can't survive.

Without land there is
no work, no food.

As peasants, we don't want
to go and live in a city.

And how are we
going to survive?

Their money will disappear.
Our land will be forever.

Until the day we die. Then for
our children. For our grand-children.

There is no reason why
the company should win!

Why can't we unite,
all the districts?

And say out loud that
the mine should go away!

So that we can
live in peace.

These are my few words as we are
almost reaching the end of the day.

the supply of water for the entire community.

The protests that started in the Kagamerca region organized by peasants and
indigenous communities

quickly spread nationwide into a historical march in defense of water.

It eventually paralyze the Conga mining projects.

We want potatoes,
we want corn!

Transnational corporations,
out of the country!

Despite the victory against Conga maxima had to face Jenna Cocha once again

this time at the Supreme Court.

the conclusion of the sentence.

We declare the cassation appeal unfounded,
as filed by the lawyer of Yanacocha company.

It acquitted the following
accused people.

Here in the capital of Peru, today,
justice was achieved based on true facts.

I just hope I'll never have to face
any further harassment from the company.

They are very
abusive people!

Maxima thought she had finally won

we all thought so.

But nothing could be further from the truth.

This was the path we took to go
to the nearby villages down hill.

After we won the trial, the company
started to put fences everywhere.

We did not know how to get in
and how to get out of here.

I had been to Andorra a few years earlier within the context of my previous
work.

The European Union has an agreement with six Central American countries

Honduras is one of them.

It never ceases to amaze me that a giant like the EU negotiates with such
small economies

as if they were on equal terms.

If these negotiations benefit people,

why is Honduras still one of the poorest countries in the world 10 years
later

and one of the countries where the largest number of environmental
defenders are killed.

Under any indigenous and environmental organizer, Bertha Casseras has been
assassinated in her home.

She was one of the leading organizers for indigenous land rights in
Honduras.

For years, the group faced death threats and repression as they stood up to
mining and dam projects

to threaten to destroy their community

it is precisely the murder of the activist Bertha Casseras

that brings me back here in La Esperanza,

the city where Bertha Casseras has lived,

When I was told that they had killed
Berta Caceres, who was my mum.

I had not doubt that she represented
an effective struggle

of the Lenca people against
these corporate interests.

I dedicated every single day of my life
to seeking justice for my mum.

Who told you
that the struggle

led by indigenous people,
had been an easy one?

Never!

Do you know how long
indigenous people have been fighting?

For five-hundred twenty years,
since the Spanish invasion.

Since the invasion, power has remained
in the hands of these northern countries.

It was based on the
exploitation of our people.

Seventy million indigenous peoples
were murdered in our continent.

Colonialism is not over.

This is why this fight is
so hard for the indigenous.

And the State apparatus
is working to maintain this.

But we are also
very powerful!

This is why we
are still here today!

In 2009 Honduras was hit
by a civic-military coup.

We understood, the aim was
not just to remove the President.

It was against a deeper social
revolution led by communities.

About the re-foundation
of Honduras,

territorial control,
indigenous and women's rights.

A key component of the Coup
aimed at consolidating Honduras

as an economic model based on the
privatization of common goods and nature.

It was a set of 49 licences
for hydroelectric dams

in order to exploit rivers
as well as other energy projects.

Counting forty-nine just
in the region of the Lenca people.

And one of these projects was
the Agua Zarca project.

the WalKakka River is a sacred river for the Lenka people

the largest indigenous community in Honduras

the river became the symbol of a struggle between two incompatible
worldviews

in the river companies see investment business opportunities and economic
growth

on the contrary, the Lenka people see it as biodiversity a common good to
be taken care

of and a spiritual place.

One wonders.

Where does so much
strength come from?

Where do so many
Rosalinas come from?

Where do so many
Bertas come from?

They told

ancestral spirits.

We are the Lenca, the indigenous
community from Intibuca.

Further tells me that in 1994, a historical Lenka March promoted by Cobain

took over the capital of Honduras.

It led to the ratification of international convention 169

it enables indigenous communities to have a say in the economic projects
affecting them

in their territories.

However, convention 169 was not respected.

On the 1st of April 2013,

people in Rio Blanco started
"The Taking of the Oak".

They wanted to block
the machineries,

which were already destroying
a part of the mountain.

They wanted to build a road

and start bringing all
the equipment for the dam.

From that day onwards, violence was
unleashed against the community.

Private security, machineries, police,
military, they all started to come here.

There was dreadful control
to get in and out of the community.

Here, COPINH is going to rule.

We could already see,
in January and February,

that the level of tension
was once again rising.

There was an atmosphere of tension.
There was surveillance.

In one of these actions,

the main leader of the community
was openly shot dead.

His name was
Tomás Garcia.

He was the President of the Council,
as well as a religious authority.

He was very
well-known.

We want to make a commitment here,
in front of Tomás's body and soul.

We are not going
to sell out!

We want that DESA and SinoHydro
to leave this project.

We demand them to remove
all repressive forces from here.

The hitmen culture
and the death threats.

The persecution during these
one-hundred and eight days

of heroic resistance

Berta didn't die!

She is now millions of people.
I am Berta.

In 2013, we started
to investigate

who the investors were,
as we did not know them.

Thanks to people in The Netherlands,
we discovered that the FMO bank was involved.

This is the Dutch
development fund.

The FinnFund, a development
fund from Finland.

The Central American Bank
for Economic Integration,

and for turbines and electrical consultancy,
the German company Voith Hydro.

More precisely
with the FMO,

Berta Caceres, as COPINH coordinator,
started communication with the bank.

Mainly by email.

She asked them not
to invest in this project

because it was violating the rights
of the indigenous communities,

and that the leader Tomás Garcia
had already been shot dead.

"Our people DO NOT grant consent for Agua Zarca
and the company in our Sacred River."

To this second email,
the bank replied

the communities were not
indigenous communities.

So we asked ourselves

how dare a Dutch bank

tell us who indigenous people are,
or are not, in our territories?

In this North vs. South
relationship,

we are the ones
who must pay

for the brutal consumerism
of these countries.

We have to bear
the consequences

of this climate change crisis,
driven by this economic exploitation.

I read in A press release that the FMO and the fin fund decided to withdraw
from the project

right after bertha's murder.

If in a first trial, 700 people were sentenced.

It took no less than six years

to sentence just one of the co authors of the murder.

David Castillo ex military and CEO of DESA was sentenced to 22 years of
prison

bertha has no doubt that the procedure is just a link

between those who pulled the trigger and those who ordered the crime

and that the roots of her mother's murder

extend beyond Honduras

This is why Berta and her family decided to sue the FMO in the Netherlands

and to find support in Brussels,

the heart of EU political power.

The death of Berta Caceres is
the chronicle of a death foretold.

Thirty-three times, she reported
the threats she was receiving.

For the sole purpose
of protecting her land,

indigenous people,
the environment.

The lives of people
with rights to it.

Much better than I, Bertha
is going to tell you all this.

investing in these projects

I had no idea just how shocking it would be

to enter a town where all traces of life seemed to have disappeared.

My name is Carolina
De Moura Campos

I'm 36 and I was
born in Belo Horizonte.

My mum brought me up alone
as she separated from my dad.

After being abused
in my teens,

I started to question
the world around me.

I studied journalism

and this is when I felt
a calling to protect nature.

So I got involved with friends
workIng in the field of environment.

We created
an NGO.

We were a group of young people
who wanted to change the world.

And as we are in Minas Gerais, it was
inevitable not to work on the mining issue.

This is an issue that dramatically
affects the life of communities here.

In 2015, we were shocked by the tragical
collapse of the dam of Fundão in Mariana.

It was operated by Samarco,
a joint venture between Vale y BHP.

There were 42 million
cubic meters of toxic waste.

I had already heard about valet

but I wanted to know more about this company.

VALE was created
in 1942

by the Government
of Getúlio Vargas,

and named
"Vale do Rio Doce".

A mixed-capital
company

with the Federal Government
as the main shareholder.

Its privatisation happened
in May 1997

during the government of
Fernando Henrique Cardoso,

entering the stock
exchange of Rio.

VALE is today the third largest
company of the country.

Just behind Petrobras
and Itau Unibanco.

Its revenues are estimated to be
the equivalent of 52 billions euro.

Mining is inefficient.

The amount of earth
they move...

to get such a tiny,
let's say, diamond.

It's absurd.

They bomb
an entire mountain

and just a small
part will be used.

So there is
a lot of waste

And for this, they need
tailings dams.

This is a place where mines put
waste with no economic value.

These are the leftovers
of what they bombed,

after keeping what is of
economic value for them.

In Brazil,
these tailings dams

are built with the cheapest and
most dangerous technologies.

Three years after the tragic
Fundão dam break in Mariana

three dams, also
properties of VALE,

collapsed today and created
a disaster still difficult to assess.

This time it happened in Brumadinho, located
in the Belo Horizonte metropolitan area.

We need an urgent plan
to evacuate everyone.

A police order already closed
the city center of Brumadinho.

100s of people
are missing.

We must provide a plan to get
everyone out. It's urgent!

They destroyed
our streets,

our garden, our houses,
our dreams,

They destroyed
our life projects.

parlamentarians
from Minas Gerais,

we are counting on everyone
to put pressure on this company,

because its behaviour
keeps violating rights.

I wonder if a terrorist activated
a bomb now and killed us all,

would they have the right to sit
down at the table and negotiate?

Or would they
immediately be jailed?

Why does a company that kills
every single day, repeatedly...

Mining kills
every single day.

Toxic waste
massacres people

drop by drop
every day!

How come they still have
the right to negotiate

what are they going
to fix, or not fix?

We have to
arrest them now

and force them to do
everything the people want.

Because the lives they took away
will never come back.

In the document, pages 76 and 77
from the public civil action,

VALE presents
ten risky dams.

These dams are those
with higher risk

according to the assessment
made by the company itself.

In this list, we see dam B1
and 4A from Córrego do Feijão...

In October 2018!

Isn't it mandatory for the CEO
to know about this?

Mandatory? The owner of
the information defines this.

If the information is in
the technical department,

and they estimate that this is not
a competence of the CEO,

then I can't make
the difference.

If a CEO is
not responsible,

and here at CPI

responsible?

What are the
responsibilities?

To cut spending in safety,
and to increase productivity,

they put workers and
communities at risk.

It's a deliberate corporate strategy
to produce a lot and to spend little.

And if people die,
it does not matter!

For many years, Vale knew
these dams were at risk.

I had access to the investigation made by
the prosecutor in Minas Gerais.

It revealed that Vale
had a list of ten dams,

whose safety was
"below the acceptable limit"

Valet kept this list in a secret box

hidden from public authorities and citizens.

A company can use several
ways to do what it wants,

One of these is called
"self-monitoring".

So the company
monitors itself.

Mining corps pay a company
to get dam stability certification.

Vale contracted a first company.
They said: "No!"

Vale hired another one.
They said "No!"

So Vale contracted Tüv Süd,
a German company.

As we know Germans make
the world's most beautiful wonders.

They are trusted
with everything,

from kids toys
to I don't know what.

As Tüv Süd had a promiscuous
relationship with Vale,

through many
other contracts,

Tüv Süd wanted to consolidate its position
in the Brazilian mining market.

So Vale pressured!

If you don't give us the certification,
I'm going to break the other contracts...

In the end,
a decision from Münich

gave Vale the certification,
in September 2018.

Just before
the dam collapsed.

"the dam is stable"

This dam rupture
is unforgivable.

Irreparable.

Whatever they pay, it won't be sufficient for
the two-hundred seventy-two people that died.

A mum who lost her child,
won't ever be called "mum" again.

She won't be a granny.

And money can't
repair this price.

In januari 2020 the CEO of Vale, 15 employees of Vale,
and chief

were charged with homicide by the prosecutor of Minajurais

All minerals that left here, and that
provided this massive size to the dam,

it went somewhere.
Someone bought it.

Someone made profit out of it.
Someone shipped it.

So we must look at
the entire chain.

For this reason,
we went to Europe

to alert EU actors
to their own responsibility.

We told them:

you got innocent people's blood
on your hands too.

Mums, dads, sons, daughters,
cousins, grandchildren...

Many many families.

Many European actors
influence mining corps' activities.

Deutsche Bank
financed Vale.

An insurance company like
Allianz insured its ventures.

In Brumadinho, Tüv Süd, the certifying
company, played a key role.

It's important that all the actors involved in
the iron chain face their responsibility.

The first buyers of iron, as raw
materials, are no longer Europeans.

Asian countries
are the first buyers.

but we are in the global value chain.

So it would be better to have a general law

saying that the companies in Europe

in a global value chain have responsibility on how they buy

products coming from another countries

and if we have this kind of flow at the European level,

we can manage to have this kind of law at the international level

and not only for European companies but also for others.

Now we have as European to reflect on

not only our welfare but also to the welfare of others

Criminals!

You brutally killed
two-hundred seventy-two people.

We're going to fight
against you!

This has to stop!

maxima has been trying to sue Newmont in the USA since 2017.

Until now, no court has let her do so.

One day the mining company center and offer

When they sent their letter,
they wrote

"We are going to make
a donation of US $50,000"

to improve another land
given by the company.

Sure they'll give us
some money...

But what can we do with money
if we don't have our land to live?

This is why we don't sell and
we prefer taking care of our land.

We'll keep fighting for our land
and for the right to live here.

Because I wanted
to protect my lagoons,

they wanted
to take my life away.

I protect the earth, the water,
because this is life.

I don't fear the power of corporations.
I'll keep fighting!

The brothers and sisters who died
in Celendin and in Bambamarca.

For all of them we are
resisting in Cajamarca.

Where does so much
strength come from?

Where do so many
Bertas come from?

My mother fought.
Organised.

My mother was
not assassinated.

She is a seed that
is born and reborn.

The fire, the struggle of the people,
which they tried to put out

What they actually did
was to make this fire bigger

because they tried
to put it out with gasoline.

Berta is alive!

we live in a civilization driven by its desire for unlimited growth

like a spinning wheel going faster and faster

out of control.

Although people are suffering, fighting back and resisting

corporations stop at nothing

some harass, divide and threaten when necessary.

They send an army of lawyers to the courtroom.

When the resistance gets too strong,

some don't hesitate to brutally eliminate anyone

who stands in their way.

This is why as I'm about to end this journey,

I'm even more inspired by maxima's Bertha's and Karolina's tireless
courage,

three women who are all suddenly forced to face the unacceptable.

I wonder why two governments let transnational corporations do abroad

what they would never do in their own territories.

How to protect those who defend nature.

How long can we go on in this perpetual illusion of abundance?
