The Maurizio Gucci case is turning into
an Italian Eve Dallas story.

A professional killer normally
takes care not to leave any witnesses.

It seems more like a crime of passion.

It seemed like a crime
that was destined to remained unsolved.

The news was telling me
about Maurizio's death.

I could no longer think.

I had lost my husband,

who was the person
I'd loved more than anyone else.

The Gucci brand is one of the key players
in this idea of Made in Italy

that's becoming
more and more important.

I really lived an incredible life.

It happened over night.

He packed his weapons and bags
and he left.

This desire to eliminate him came out.

Maybe her narcissism had taken a hit.

I went around asking, "Is anyone here
brave enough to kill my husband?"

The investigations
just went round in circles.

Who wanted Maurizio Gucci's death?

I didn't think they'd catch me.

This is...

These are my favourite streets.

Because every time I come here,
I discover something new.

I grew up among beautiful things.

This was my school.

This is the church where I got married.

Via dei Giardini.

I lived here alone,
when I was single,

with my parents, in number 3.

Patrizia Reggiani was convicted

of contracting the murder
of Maurizio Gucci

and spent almost 20 years in prison,
two decades.

Guilty or innocent,
she served her sentence.

She found herself thrown into a new life.

Patrizia was born in 1948 and grew up
in the poorest outskirts of Milan.

A Milan where social differences
are clear, they're evident.

Her mother, Silvana, is a dishwasher
at a café in via Padova.

But her life and her daughter's life
radically change

after she meets a rich entrepreneur,
Ferdinando Reggiani.

Patrizia had two surnames:
Martinelli Reggiani.

Why did she have two surnames?

I don't think any of us
ever asked ourselves that.

I found out that Patrizia
was not Reggiani's daughter,

but that, later on,
she'd been adopted by Reggiani.

And I imagine that...

Patrizia's past,
the difficult childhood she experienced,

which is the thing that leaves the
biggest mark on someone's character,

probably instilled in her this fear...

of going back to being poor.

Everything I remember about my father...

is good.

He was very funny,
he was nice to me,

he always agreed with me.

He gave me the money
to buy my first house,

and that's something
I've never forgotten.

I had a terrible relationship
with my mother.

We couldn't even be
in the same room together.

Because I'm a bit mad,

and she's a bit mad, too,

so two madwomen
couldn't be in the same room together.

The Milan of the '60s
is the Milan of the economic boom.

Milan was the engine and the heart
of the legendary '60s.

It's a modern city, a city of events,

a city where things are happening
and where everything can be redesigned.

One of the things that's being redesigned
is fashion.

That transgressive, kind of rebellious
fashion, of girls in miniskirts.

In those years, trends
weren't defined by fashion designers.

The street was
the shop window and the catwalk.

Patrizia's got money,

but she's missing the status
given to those born into wealth.

There is a substantial difference
between those born into a rich family

and those who need to continue
to progress,

to prove themselves,
to rise to the challenge.

Patrizia is one of those people.

The first time I met Maurizio
was very strange.

My best friend at the time said to me,

"Look, you've got to drag
Maurizio Gucci to my party."

And I asked her,
"Who is Maurizio Gucci?"

I go up to the first floor,
and he arrives.

He said, "How can I talk to you?"

And I said, "We'll have time."

But I'd already understood
that he was trying to court me.

Then we decided to go down
to the nightclub.

I was there with another guy,
in his Porsche.

Whereas he'd arrived in a smaller car,

so I already made up my mind about him:
this guy's a loser.

The "loser" is actually
part of a huge dynasty, the Guccis,

which started with Guccio Gucci,

his grandfather
and the creator of the business

which will one day become
an extraordinary brand, an Italian dream.

When Guccio Gucci dies, three
of his six children join the business,

Aldo, the eldest, Vasco and Rodolfo,

and they're the ones who really
take up the reins of the business.

At one point
I get a phone call from him,

and he says, "Listen, I've found

"this restaurant that's really nice,

"how about we go there
tomorrow evening?"

And that same evening, he says to me,

"Listen, what would you think
about your name being Patrizia Gucci?"

So I said,
"What? Have you gone mad?"

That's when we started dating.

Back then I was really fun,
not like I am now.

Besides my beauty,

Maurizio was struck by
everything about me.

You can only imagine
the sort of car I was used to.

So I told him, "Listen, don't you think
you should get a new car?"

And he said, "Yeah, maybe I should."

So we put together, a bit me, a bit him,

more him than me,
a good sum of money.

And we bought a beautiful car, a Ferrari.

I've had other relationships, but...

never like Maurizio.

Maurizio was my only true love.

which was beautiful...

Maurizio's father
was absolutely opposed to our union.

Because... I don't know.

Maurizio distances himself.
He's in disagreement with his father

and in search of his independence.

It's his uncle Aldo Gucci who helps
his nephew and his wife Patrizia.

Aldo Gucci is the firstborn,
the most visionary,

who has an instinctive fashion sense
as well as an instinctive business sense.

Patrizia is the one
to search for an ally in Aldo.

Aldo manages to make
father and son make peace,

but he also tells his brother
very clearly that,

bringing Maurizio back into the family,
Patrizia is also joining the family.

Aldo thought very highly of me
because of my intelligence.

I respected him.

He'd sent us to New York

to put me under his protective wing.

I mean, I'm a beautiful woman...

In the '70s, the Gucci brand
is growing incredibly quickly.

It's one of the key players
in this idea of Made in Italy

that's becoming more
and more important,

in part thanks to prêt-à-porter,

in other words the democratisation
of fashion which is progressing

along with the more exclusive
haute couture,

the basic high fashion found
in Paris and Rome.

It's a golden moment for fashion,
for Made in Italy, for Gucci.

And for Patrizia.

In fact, Alessandra is born in 1977
and four years later Allegra,

and in the meantime Maurizio's father
Rodolfo has bought the couple

a truly unique loft in New York.

My father-in-law
had given me the house in New York.

It was gorgeous.

But this gift was somehow
pushed for by Patrizia,

who had a sense for real estate.
More than a flat it was a penthouse,

880 square metres on Fifth Avenue.

The New York jetsetters
all came to this house.

Patrizia is one of the most vivacious,
extraordinary people in the city.

Patrizia is living the high life,
a truly extraordinary life,

in the places that matter,
in the centre of the world.

She's a woman who always seems
to know what she wants,

who always seems to be a step ahead.

She's the one to organise parties
in Milan, in New York, and elsewhere.

So she's the entertainment,
she herself is the life of the party.

ISCHIA, 1977

We were in Ischia for the thermal baths,
and that's where I met Pina.

I met her in Ischia
and I immediately found her endearing.

She didn't have a happy childhood,
Patrizia.

She didn't have any sisters or brothers.

She had this mum
who was not a mum to her,

because her mum was self-centred,
she was...

What is a mum
who always calls her daughter a bastard?

Patrizia had suffered a lot.

She was a woman in pain in that respect.

So I'd become her confidante.

We weren't even friends,
we were like sisters.

In Pina,
Patrizia probably did not only find

a kind of friend, a confidante,

but also someone
who was able to recognise her status,

to treat her like Patrizia Gucci.

And Pina's main interest was money,

so Pina Auriemma is accustomed
to receiving regular payments,

benefits,
royalties from Patrizia Reggiani.

She took me on holiday,
but because she needed company,

she needed to vent,
she needed to talk.

Rather than leave the girls
with the nanny, she'd phone me

and I'd come running to stay with them.
And this went on for many years.

I'd listen to her
because I felt kind of bad for her.

But...

she was a friend, let's say.

COPENHAGEN, 1983

My favourite memory with Maurizio

was when he joined me in Copenhagen

and we took this boat out

in the wind and all that,

and then we got to where the Créole was,

and I fell in love with this boat.

Patrizia Reggiani does not seem
to be used to being told no.

She wants a flat because she doesn't like
staying in hotels, and she gets a flat.

She wants the Créole,
and naturally she manages to get it.

I was in Paris, and he calls me and says,

"Listen, what would you say
if I bought you the Créole?"

And I told him,
"That would be fantastic."

And so we became owners of the Créole.

All this love turned against me.

I have never been lucky,
except for my love story with Maurizio.

But...

Milan of the '80s is the Milan of fashion,
the Milan of Made in Italy,

which is in the midst
of its most extraordinary moment.

The moment of great fashion designers,
the moment the whole world is watching.

But in this moment of splendour,
the harmony within the family...

begins to disintegrate.

The Gucci family is in its third
generation, but Rodolfo dies in 1983.

At that point, Rodolfo's shares
pass into Maurizio's hands.

Patrizia thinks that Maurizio probably
will not be the best choice

to lead and manage the company,
but Gucci did not easily allow women

to take on an administrative,
managerial role.

But Patrizia would like to,
she'd like to try to enter

that world that she loves and knows
and feels like it's hers, too.

I tried to help Maurizio

very, very, very much in his business.

Because Maurizio had this thing,
that if he got obsessed about something,

he went straight
onto the path to failure.

We realise that this woman

has a role in Gucci's growth
as a businessman,

a role which may have been fundamental
in some choices,

and was certainly very,
very oppressing at times.

Some people tell us that Gucci suffered
from Patrizia's invasiveness.

Paolo, who is Maurizio's cousin
and one of Aldo's four children,

does not tolerate the family's discipline,

so he wants to somehow break free
and open up his own line.

And that's when Patrizia feels
that the time has come

for her to play an important role.

Acapulco.

At one point, I look around

and I see this cousin of Maurizio's,

telling me, "Come here, come here."

And he tells me, "Listen, if you're
involved, we can do great things."

So I asked him,
"What kind of great things?"

He says, "I feel that at this point
I no longer care about Gucci...

"so I need to meet with Maurizio."

So I told him, "Certainly."

So we organised a meeting in via Durini,
where we lived.

When the two of them come down,
I see that both of them are satisfied.

So I ask him why.
And he says, "We've made a deal.

"Paolo's going to sell me his shares,
and I'm going to buy them."

I told him, "Ah, wonderful,
bottle of champagne."

Maurizio, who had already inherited
50% of the shares from his father,

along with Paolo's shares now has a
majority and becomes head of Gucci.

The only mistake Maurizio made
was not communicating this

to the cornerstone of Gucci, Uncle Aldo.

So when Maurizio found himself
in disagreement with Uncle Aldo,

Aldo goes, "Hey, kid,
how dare you give orders to me?"

And that's when the kid
pulled out what he'd bought.

Aldo didn't believe it,

so the next morning Aldo went in...

and found everything closed,
his offices and everything.

Basically Aldo had been
kicked out of Gucci.

And he told me, "What a pity.

You and I would have been
Gucci's rebirth."

And that's when the destruction began.

A disaster.

Because Maurizio...

was never able to hold onto Gucci.

The real problem in those years was that
the Gucci brand had become too popular,

there were too many licenses,
too many products.

The brand had become watered-down
in a way.

Maurizio understands, he realises
he needs to close those licenses

and somehow bring Gucci
back to the greatness it once had,

but he's not able to manage it.
So he understands the problem,

but he doesn't know how to deal with it,
and the firm finds itself in trouble.

My first crisis with Maurizio

was when he packed his weapons
and bags and he left.

Then, at one point, I felt lost.

I had this huge house, two children.

Well, there was always the nanny,
but in any case I was in shock.

Maurizio disappeared over night,

running around the world, and he did not
contact his children nor his wife.

After the death of his father,
after Rodolfo's death,

his personality seems to come out,

Maurizio's true identity
seems to be revealed.

And one could say that it seemed
he was going to look elsewhere

for his personality,
for his true identity.

The Créole seems to be, yes,
a gift he made to Patrizia,

but also a way for him to feel truly free.

I never stopped loving Maurizio,

but I have to say
he really disappointed me.

When he turned up again,

from what I remember,
from what she told me,

he didn't want to get back together.
The marriage was over.

I resisted for 15 years.

He, on the other hand,
resisted for 13 years.

So we spent these two years fighting,

with me yelling at him,

"You're a..." Well...

I tried twice to see Maurizio,

to tell him that he was ruining Gucci,

but he told me, "No, what
do you want to do? Don't worry."

But I knew he was ruining Gucci.

So at that point
Maurizio decides to sell his shares,

and he sells them to the Arabs
of Investcorp.

170 million dollars was the price,

270 billion lire,
an enormous sum of money.

The curtain falls on one
of the biggest Italian fashion brands,

a legendary brand which falls
once and for all into foreign hands.

My...

disappointment...

led me to kick him out of the house.

And I have to say I was very surprised
that he'd already packed his bags.

I was shocked when Maurizio left,

because he seemed like the one
who was more in love of the two.

It's not like they drifted apart.
It happened over night.

Maurizio never asked me
for a divorce,

and I was alright with that.

Then suddenly this Paola Franchi
comes on the scene,

and he asks me for a divorce.

So I was no longer allowed

to use the Gucci name.

But I still use it.

She phoned me in Naples
one day and said:

"I fainted, they took me to hospital,
I need to have surgery,

"I might have a brain tumour."

She called it a brain tumour,
but it was a very superficial thing,

otherwise we wouldn't be here
to tell the story, right?

My illness was a meningioma...

I don't know... in my head.

She really took advantage of this illness,

she wanted to take advantage of it
in court, too,

saying she couldn't remember,
she couldn't say, but they exposed her.

I found out that he'd come
to the Madonnina clinic,

and then he hadn't had the courage
to come inside.

I found that out, and I thought,
"What a bastard."

And that was one of the reasons why...

I stopped loving him.

You've crossed the line,

even your own daughters despise you

and don't want to see you anymore
to forget the trauma.

You're a... a deformed growth.

You're a painful appendage
that we all want to forget.

You told me...

that in the period when you were forging
your father's signature,

you went through hell.

No, you're wrong, Maurizio...

hell is still to come for you.

When I found out
that Maurizio wanted to marry...

this person,

who had even been a friend of mine,
back in the day,

I thought, "That's not possible."

I was sure he was ignoring

his daughters for Paola Franchi.

This really cuts the ground
from under Patrizia's feet,

because having a competitor,
an adversary,

a new Lady Gucci
and potentially new heirs,

somehow calls her role into question.

She'd lost this power she had
to guide him.

She felt hurt, humiliated, because he...

he'd found himself another woman,
he'd built another life for himself.

My thought was:
I am protecting my daughters.

I mean...

Maurizio was cutting us out.

He no longer wanted
to see his family or anything.

We have four houses in Saint Moritz.

And he didn't want to give
even one of them to my daughters.

Something happened in her.
Maybe her narcissism had taken a hit.

This desire to eliminate him came out.

I went around asking
the butcher and so on,

"Is anyone here brave enough
to kill my husband?"

She'd asked all of Milan
to find a murderer.

Lots of people didn't take her seriously.
The only idiot was me.

I have a shortcoming.
I can't aim straight,

so I couldn't do it myself.

I had to find...

these Beagle Boys
who would do it for me.

As for me, it was supposed to be a scam,
because these guys weren't criminals,

they weren't people
who knew how to hold a gun.

They had no intention of killing Maurizio.

27 March 1995

Maurizio Gucci, heir of the prestigious
fashion house, has been killed in Milan.

There are witnesses. The doorman,
shot in the shoulder by the murderer,

is the one who's been able
to provide the best description so far:

a man wearing a baseball cap
and dark sunglasses

who comes running out of Gucci's house
right after shooting him.

Speaking of the gun, it appears
to have been a pistol with a silencer

manufactured abroad
and filled with American bullets,

sold only in Switzerland,
Austria and Germany.

This does not prove that the killer
or whoever sent him is a foreigner,

but it does open this possibility.

The motive: the investigators
seem to believe in an economic feud.

There are certainly many stories
of hatred, hostility and threats.

My daughters' nanny,
who was in Saint Moritz said to me,

"Have you seen the news?"
And I said, "No."

And in fact, the news was telling me
about Maurizio's death.

I was... incoherent.

And... I couldn't remember... I mean...

I didn't know what...

my marital situation was.

I could no longer think.

Then I tried to...

to...

accept it...

because I'd lost...

my husband.

Who was the person
I'd loved more than anyone else.

It was like being hit over the head.

So I shrugged off all my thoughts.

At first I thought it was one of
the dirty business deals Maurizio made.

The manoeuvres performed to get into
the management of Swiss casinos

seem to be intertwined
with the Gucci affair.

After selling the brand
to the Arabs at Investcorp,

after paying his debts to Delfo Zorzi,

suspected of the Piazza Fontana
massacre,

Gucci had 40 million dollars left.

This led to clashes between groups
to manage gambling halls.

The investigations into this continue.

I talked to Pina, who told me,
"See what a nice present I've given you?

But now you've got to pay.

And you'd better pay a lot.

Otherwise, one down, two to go."
Who are my daughters.

"Please,
I'll give you all the money you want,

"but no dead children."

When Maurizio was killed,
I was in the hotel. I was really upset.

Patrizia plays the role of the widow.

She wears these dark diva glasses,

even a veil to cover her head.

With all this,

it's not easy to see the real expressions
on Patrizia Reggiani's face.

She really didn't seem to be in mourning.

And I become more and more shocked.

It was as if nothing had happened to her.

The important thing
was she'd gotten back

all the things that belonged to her,
as she said.

According to the press,

Patrizia Reggiani asked Paola Franchi,
on the day of the funeral,

for some of Maurizio's clothes,
so they wouldn't be lost,

and at the same time she asked her
to leave the flat in Corso Venezia.

When we found ourselves needing
to write about this individual who,

as crime and judicial news journalists,
we did not know very well,

we quickly found ourselves
facing the image of a complex man,

not a simple man,
a man with many different sides to him.

Then I understood where it came from,
from a personal and professional history

of often violent conflicts within
the business, with his business partners.

He was not always an easy person
to deal with.

It's difficult to look for the simplest
and most ordinary solution.

The simple solution was in front
of everyone's eyes, it was in his family.

It's easier to go search for
a glossy explanation,

which the Gucci world was,

so an explanation
that had something to do

with the business side, the male part.

The investigations were male-oriented.

The investigations
just went round in circles...

It seemed like a crime
that was destined to remained unsolved.

Two years passed
between the murder and the arrest.

Those two years
were really tough for me.

Every time I passed
in front a police station,

I was tempted to turn myself in.

What stopped me? The fact that
I'd have to turn the others in, too?

Reggiani, with two children?

After all the years we'd spent together,

I phoned her to ask her
how I should behave and she said,

"I'll get you out of this
with your head held high."

And then things went the way they went.

She shocked me when,
passing by the cemetery,

she says, "Let's go visit Maurizio."

"Visit Maurizio?"

I felt guilty, torn apart inside.

That's when the veil lifted for me.
And I thought, "What have I done?

"How could I have believed
in this woman for so many years?"

That murder left its mark on me.

I managed multiple
law enforcement workers at the time,

and in the end I asked each of them

the same question,
"What about the Gucci murder?"

And they all answered,
"It's not our case."

Until one day, in January 1997,

I received a now infamous phone call.

It was about 10 p.m.,
my secretary came in and said to me,

"Sir, there's someone on the phone
for you, he'll only talk to you."

I say, "Alright, pass me the call,
let's finish off the evening."

I take the call, the man introduces
himself as Gabriele Carpanese,

and he says, "I have to tell you
some important things.

"Are you interested in the Gucci murder?"

Carpanese explained to me that he
and his wife moved to a small hotel

and started to have less and less money,

so he came up with something

along with the nephew
of the owner of this Adri Hotel.

He said that in Colombia

he'd been part of a gang.

Savioni, the hotel owner's nephew,

believed what Carpanese was telling him.

At that point Savioni responded,
"We did something big, too."

He said, "If things had gone the way they
were supposed to go,

"I would be a millionaire right now,
because I was an accomplice

"to a very important murder."

The Gucci murder.

GUCCI, 3 GUNSHOTS
AND A MYSTERY

He says, "Yes, I'm a friend
of Giuseppina Auriemma,

"who in turn is a friend of Gucci's wife,
Patrizia Reggiani.

"And she came to ask us
on behalf of Patrizia Reggiani

"to kill her husband,
and she was going to pay us very well."

Auriemma and Savioni met in Naples.

Savioni's wife was a Neapolitan woman,

and she was a friend of Pina Auriemma's.
They met in Naples.

Pina comes to Milan,
Savioni comes to Milan, they meet again,

and their friendship had never ended,
they'd kept in touch.

So when Mrs. Reggiani...

told Auriemma about her plan
to kill her husband,

Auriemma thought she'd ask Savioni.

Actually, Savioni was not
a real criminal at all.

In fact, he had no criminal record.

Maybe a bounced check or something
like that, but certainly nothing criminal.

So they see a way to make some money.

I went to Savioni who, it's known,
does not have the criminal background

to be able to carry out a murder.

In fact, it's strange
that Savioni was able to find

the people who
would actually carry out the murder.

I didn't know...

that they,
the Beagle Boys as I call them,

had contacted this person

to ask him to kill Maurizio.

And they too,
I must say, were amateurs.

When Auriemma left,

she really didn't have any intention
of killing Maurizio Gucci.

She knew she could get money
out of Patrizia

without ever committing the murder.

She'd talked to me.

"What if I had your husband killed?"
And I'd told her, "Look, be my guest."

Except that unfortunately Patrizia,
seeing that the murder never took place,

started to get suspicious, thinking,
"Something's not right here."

When she realised this,

that I was not
taking care of getting this...

murder done, she wanted to meet
Savioni, and she came on the scene.

After that both Savioni and Reggiani
got me out of the way.

So she spoke to Savioni,

and besides trying to force him,
she also tried to butter him up,

even giving him
a fabulous cashmere jumper

which Savioni
had probably never seen in his life.

And I never heard another thing
about what she promised,

about what she said,
about how she managed to convince him,

because in my opinion
Savioni wasn't so important.

He was a normal guy.

At one point Savioni meets up
with an old acquaintance of his,

who he always calls
with a kind of respect, Mr Cicala.

Cicala always needed money,
because he was a bit of a gambler.

And he also seemed to be a drug dealer.

So in contact with slightly
more important criminal groups.

And he...

in time, gets in touch with Ceraulo...

who is the hitman who actually
carried out the Maurizio Gucci murder.

I never thought it would end this way,

because it was supposed to be a scam.

Carpanese explained that it was not
Savioni and his accomplices' intention

to carry through with the Gucci murder.

But just to extort a sum of money
from Patrizia Reggiani.

And in fact they asked for a deposit,
multiple millions.

Pina had told me that,

since she was selling evening gowns,

she'd asked for a loan of 150 million.

The bank director had told me,

"Look, if you don't want
to see your 150 million again,

"go ahead and give it to her."

But it didn't last long for them,
because they went gambling at casinos.

They thought they'd keep asking
Reggiani for more.

And she said,
"Okay, I'll give you the rest,

"the rest of the money,
but you have to kill him,

"because he's about
to marry his girlfriend,

"his new girlfriend,
and I don't like that."

That's when they decided
to actually carry out the murder.

That's where Carpanese's story ended.

And Ninni opens an investigation

which is truly spectacular,
just like in the movies,

and in fact he manages to nail them all.

Obviously it wasn't possible
to arrest them all on the basis

of a statement made
by an individual like Carpanese.

So Operation Carlos was born.

They start from the true mistake
of this whole story, the blackmail,

so Patrizia who doesn't pay everything,
these guys who blackmail her.

And that's where Carlos comes in.

There was an inspector
whose mum was Colombian.

I asked him,
"Do you speak Spanish well?"

"Yeah! I speak Old Spanish,
the kind they speak in Colombia."

"Would you be up to infiltrating,
saying you've come from Colombia

"to bring some money to Carpanese?"

"Sure," he said. "No problem."

So one day he turns up at the Adri Hotel

and tells Savioni in Spanish
that he's looking for Carpanese.

Savioni calls Carpanese and says,

"Look, the guy you say is a killer
is here."

He says, "He's got this steely gaze,
that guy is really scary."

Carpanese comes down,
they speak in Spanish,

and Carpanese asks him
if he's willing to blackmail someone

who owes Savioni some money.

"No problem, tell him I'll either
bring him the money they're asking for,

"or else I'll bring him
Mrs. Gucci's head."

Savioni was happy about this answer,

and he said, "Look, here's 50,000 lire,

"take him to a restaurant,
and take my car."

We were amazed.
The car came straight to the office,

we bugged it,

and after they went to the restaurant,

they brought it back to Savioni.

Savioni contacted Auriemma first,
by phone,

and told her to come because
he had some important news to give her.

And he took the car we'd bugged

to go pick her up at the train station.

When he arrived,
Savioni said to Giuseppina,

"Listen, get in the car, because we
can be sure no one can hear us here."

They got in the car and we listened.

Actually, I was right there
in the radio room as they spoke,

and I could hear everything
they were saying. Savioni said,

"Listen, Gucci still owes us
a lot of money."

"Yeah, okay," said Auriemma,

"but this time I've got to get
something out of it, too."

I decided that

at dawn, it was 4:30 in the morning,

we made the arrests.

All of the accused
are arrested simultaneously.

They don't know who's been arrested.

And when, finally,
the investigation turned towards us,

and they came to arrest me,
I felt relieved,

because I knew it was
the punishment I deserved.

I got to Mrs. Gucci's house.

I didn't think they'd catch me.

At one point
I hear this guy knocking on the door.

So I come out with all my thingies,

in my underwear, and I say,

"What is this, a robbery?"

"No, madam,
we're here to arrest you."

"To arrest me?"

I asked Patrizia Reggiani

if she knew the reason we were there,
at her house.

She answered very coldly,
"Yes, for my husband's murder."

Then my daughter,
who'd woken up, obviously, asked,

"Mum, what have you done?"

"Eh...

"my business."

She'd put on all of her jewellery,

a flashy fur coat.

I said to Mrs. Reggiani,

"Look, you're going to be arrested
and taken to jail,

"so I recommend you leave
the jewellery you're wearing

"and that fur coat with your mother."

But she said, "No, my jewellery
and my fur coat go where I go."

She said goodbye to her daughters,
saying, "See you later, I'll be back soon.

"Stay inside and wait for me."

I was... confused.

I felt completely empty inside.

A real turn of events.

The Maurizio Gucci case is turning
into an Italian Eve Dallas story.

After two years, the investigations
have reached a turning point.

- Did Mrs. Reggiani say anything?

We wonder where they're taking her.

They're taking her
to Criminalpol in Piazza San Sepolcro.

We run there, day has broken,
and within an hour the news breaks

and basically the same thing happens as
had happened on the day of the crime,

so Milan goes crazy
because we're back to square one,

and once we find out it was his wife,

obviously within an hour
the news has travelled across the world.

CASINOS AND BILLIONS BUT

My mother asked me,
"What have you done?" "If I'm here..."

After a while, Patrizia Reggiani's
two daughters arrived.

The eldest, Alessandra,
asked to speak with me.

She asked,

"If my mother had wanted
my father dead,

"she would have taken the gun

with my lawyers.

My version
is that I did not commission anything

to the person who did this.

Which was Pina.

She immediately accused me
of ordering the killing.

I pled innocent.

In the end, they took them away.

I think the first one to come out, but
I could be mistaken, was Auriemma,

followed by Gucci,

without the fur coat,
bundled up in something

they must have lent her inside.

When she came out of the office,
before getting into the car,

she took one last look at the church

which was across from my office
in Piazza San Sepolcro.

It was the church where she
and Maurizio Gucci had gotten married.

The Gucci trial began
around the end of '98

and was closed definitively with the Court
of Appeals sentence

at the beginning of 2001.

Patrizia is in the courtroom

this whole time, and almost seems
to feel comfortable there.

Patrizia Reggiani had no interest in
commissioning Maurizio Gucci's murder,

for a very simple reason:

when their marriage
was coming to an end,

they signed an financial agreement

in which Maurizio Gucci agreed
to pay Patrizia Reggiani

a million Swiss francs a year,
a million euros.

It's a considerable sum,

which would allow Patrizia Reggiani
to live a glamorous lifestyle.

At the trial, I explained
that I'd been blackmailed

by Pina and her friends,
up to 600 million.

I said, "Your Honour, that may be true,

"
but the fact remains that she paid

"even before the murder."

No one pays ahead of time
if there's not going to be a murder.

So this attempt of Patrizia Reggiani's
to defend herself also failed.

During the trial,
Reggiani seemed to be very tough.

She looked people in the eye.
She was...

she was angry.

During the trial, my mother and my two
daughters never abandoned me.

All three of them...

were with me.

Reggiani, even after the trial,

continued to claim
that Pina had blackmailed her.

Such a long, torturous trial,
with so many witnesses,

so many people
that were questioned in the courtroom,

would have made anyone uncomfortable.

I spent 18 years.

So, I would sleep, I would shower,

and I would go down to the garden.

I had preferential treatment.

Her surname had a weight in there.

The jail was split into two groups,

pro Patrizia, pro Pina Auriemma.

Because they couldn't stand her.

They knew she was lying a lot.

My relationship
with the inmates was excellent.

Excellent.

She never gave anyone anything.

They would even steal the food

And when you get out, and you close
those doors for the last time,

you're a completely new person,
you're not the person you used to be.

Jail did not change me one bit,

because I came out
just the way I'd come in.

The murder of stylist Maurizio Gucci.

His wife, Patrizia Reggiani, could serve
the last three years of her sentence

working for social services.

After 16 years at San Vittore, the woman
has been free for a few months,

awaiting the decision
from the supervisory court.

The injunction's come. Patrizia Reggiani
will volunteer at Caritas

another tells me another thing.

Then I have to see my lawyers,

and I have to deal with my flats,

and there are plenty of them.

Now, obviously,
I have to do it all myself.

Many years later, I ran into
Patrizia Reggiani and I asked her,

"Madam, how did those 17 years go?"

And she said, "They flew by."

Because...

These ups and downs
have made me incredibly strong.
