Appreciate it.

I've always taken pride in trying to be a good mom,

and I thought that this job suited me

because I really do like kids.

These, swallow with your drink, please.

I couldn't find any chewables, sorry guys.

I know, I know, we wanna stay healthy,

and maybe this will help.

I don't want your parents mad at me.

(laughs)

- [Darla] As soon as breakfast is over,

we'll start cleaning our rooms then.

We've got lots to do.

(laughing)

and you'll have it done correctly and neatly.

- Everybody has a job every night.

If everybody pitches in, the house stays clean.

- I had to teach each boy to run the washer and the dryers

because I don't think any of them knew how to run one.

- At first, I was cleaning their bathrooms,

but sometimes their bathroom habits weren't fair,

so they help me clean the bathrooms now.

So, I have to talk to Vietnam about bathroom habits

because you guys use a water method,

you guys take it down the toilet,

Tuan uses the garbage can.

- The reason that I'm going through this with you guys

is because it's an embarrassing situation.

The European boys who are like Americans,

toilet paper, after it's used, goes into the toilet,

and I just don't wanna embarrass any boys next year

in front of other people.

Just lettin' you know, people get made fun of for that.

But every country is different,

but it sounds like at least 75% of the Asian countries

use toilet paper and they put it in the garbage can.

- [Ban Yeah.

- And then the other, some of the use the toilet,

but some of them use the water method.

Okay, that's good to know.

We're pretty regimented,

but it keeps our house healthy and clean.

- Somethin' about this community and place,

I guess this is a place you wanna come back to,

which is kinda, you know when you go out to make your money,

make some money, but there's not a lotta money here,

but it's really, I guess that's

part of livin' here, you know?

What do you want?

You want money or do you want scenery

and nice place to live and no worries type thing?

(peaceful music)

- All I'd ever done is logged my whole life

since I got outta school.

That industry went south.

Things got so bad last year,

I just parked what equipment I had left.

There was one time six, seven years ago maybe.

I had 17 people hired, contractors and employers.

I'm down to one, which is myself.

(peaceful music)

- I filmed some of the areas that have been logged here.

The Forest Services pulled out,

and their feeling is that these forests

are worth more being left alone

and that has a lot of people feeling very vulnerable

in terms of, you know, this was my livelihood,

this is what I did.

Unfortunately, in these little, tiny communities,

you have to rely on the natural resources around here,

harvesting them,

because there's not industry here to support people.

That's a lot of why

these little communities are disappearing

is kind of it's this whole moving to the cities,

industrialization to survive.

- This community is all we have.

We're surrounding 30 miles here just away from other people.

We have to rally together.

- I mean, it's dwindled down to the people

that can afford to stay here.

So, that's why the school now has 40 kids instead of 150.

(chattering)

(cheering)

- [Rod] Morning.

- If we didn't have foreign exchange kids,

we'd always only have about 11 kids in the high school.

Even our kids, I mean,

they learn a lot from the foreign exchange kids too.

It kinda goes back and forth, both directions.

- When I was a freshman,

we didn't have any exchange students,

and we didn't have any when I was a sophomore either

because we had enough boys in the high school.

- Us girls are hoping for guys

that like to do a lotta things and not just sit around.

- I hope that the next foreigners that come in

are really good basketball

and volleyball players and football.

- There's not many guys around here,

and if there is, we're all related to them.

- Yeah, everybody's really excited for them to come.

- When I met the foreign exchange students for this year,

it was like, I don't know,

I didn't really like them that much.

- The barrier between us in language and in,

like cultural barriers too, it's kinda fun,

but it's challenging too at the same time.

- Learn new things about everybody's culture and countries

and stuff you just wouldn't learn otherwise.

(heavy rock music)

(laughing)

- I hate you so bad.

- [Justus] What?

- I have to pick up Caleb at herdford, dodge cows.

The cows in particular like to

jump out there in front of ya.

You have to payin' a little bit of attention.

And go back and get on the highway

and try to make it to Unity before school starts.

- Caleb and Justus, it's their senior year.

I mean, they wanted to play football,

so they started begging.

It wasn't even recruiting, it was begging,

and the boys came home from school,

and you know wide-eyed, what is American football?

But when Kan, a week into school,

and well, Harry too, they...

- [Darla] Absolutely understand nothing you say to them.

I think to myself, is this fair for two boys

that have absolutely no idea

what they're getting themselves into?

So, what I told them was, just try it,

and if you don't like it, come home.

- They didn't know anything about football,

except what they seen on TV.

- I'd much rather being playing

with a full team of American people

that knew what they were doin', but this is fun, you know?

- I kinda thought about

how they're gonna play football and everything,

but they all looked like pretty good athletes.

- [Boys] Oh!

- Don't turn your hands backwards, cradle.

- Hail Mary, right, I said that.

- Pig?

- Yeah, okay, well.

- Whatever makes sense to you.

(speaking at once)

- Set, hut!

- [Justus] Oh crap, alright!

- They showed up at practice the first day.

Wayne Wise was, from the very first day,

those boys were attracted to him.

- It kinda went from well, we could have a team

and then that we might now,

but it looks like we're gonna have a team,

but don't have nobody to coach it, and so, you know,

well, I'll, you know, if nobody else is gonna do it,

I'll do it just so that these boys could play,

and nobody else did.

(laughing)

This is the first coaching job I've ever had.

Good job.

When I looked at their paperwork,

and when do of 'em come up

weighin' 122 pounds a piece, and one of 'em 125,

I thought my goodness.

(laughing)

This is gonna be ugly.

We went out with no pads or nothin'.

They just all had shorts and t-shirts

and tried to get a few things goin',

did a little bit of this and that,

and we did a runnin' deal, timed 'em.

They didn't understand that.

Just to try to get an idea of what position they might play,

how fast they were, well, they were all extremely slow

because they weren't even runnin'.

They weren't even tryin', you know,

so, some of 'em ended up in positions that they wouldn't

have normally been if I'd have

actually known how fast they were.

Yeah, I don't know that two or three of 'em had ever

even seen a football before, so it was interesting.

(cheerful music)

(chattering)

(yelling)

- Now, let's try it.

Try it and see what happens.

That is actually better.

You know, tried to teach 'em

to hike the ball was very interesting

because I don't know if it's their culture.

This is how it's gonna be.

They didn't wanna put their hand up under the center a tall.

They wanted to be back a foot or two.

Well, they just wouldn't do it.

And the center didn't like it too much either.

- I'm gonna hold it where I want it, like this.

- Get down.

- All right now, I want you,

this is where you need to grab it every time.

Like that.

- He turned it, he turned it

- Here, this how I held it.

- The one that we finally decided on center

and got used to it and they got good at it.

It sounds like he's (speaking in foreign language).

- [Student] Nice jump.

- We're at Whitni's birthday party.

- My grandma is a taxidermist and she works on deer,

and elk, and cougars, and all kinds of different animals

and mounts them.

She uses the same washing machine

that her clothes get washed in and everything.

(laughing)

(chattering in background)

- [Darla] No fear today.

- No fumbles, no fumbles.

What did Roger tell you?

Hit 'em first, hit 'em low, hit 'em hard and fast.

And before hit 'em before they can get you.

- First game was ugly.

- I think they were so wound up,

that they were wore out before the game started.

- After the first game, they really didn't say a whole lot.

- Nobody wanted to run.

- If it was 50 to six and,

like I say we were outta players.

(laughing)

- Wow, these boys don't know what football's about.

They really didn't understand that

they were gonna be getting hit.

And you could just hear these clashes of all the helmets.

(inaudible slow-motion voice over)

- When we played the next game,

it was an extremely hot day we went down there

and I looked at all them players,

and I thought, oh no, here we go again, you know?

But I did also put it into perspective that Huntington

is in kinda the same shape we are.

They had five American boys and 12 exchange students.

- We were intimidated, but as the game started,

we just got really pumped up and everything.

(cheering)

(whistle blowing)

- We actually managed to play some defense.

- A fearlessness was there.

- We just worked so much better working as a team

instead of trying to do everything yourself.

- It was really a surprise, felt good about it.

(cheering)

- Harry Su-z-a-yo, Su,

he rolled his ankle, so we're off to Baker City,

to get him some doctor care.

(humming)

- There were more kids in the school last year Harry,

so there was more of a variety of

kids to choose a friend from.

But no, I don't, I think that you guys are making friends.

It's just maybe harder out here

because there's so few of us.

- [Harry] Yeah.

- Okay, so what happened to you?

- Okay.

On your team?

Your teammates or someone else's team?

You made them do that to you?

- [Darla] Did you say they hugged you?

- [Nurse] Oh, they hugged you?

And it hurt your foot when they hugged you?

- [Nurse] Okay.

- [Darla] So Harry, maybe you should say they tackled you.

- [Nurse] Oh, they were loving on you?

(laughing)

- [Darla] Is that...

- [Nurse] It was a love tackle?

- [Darla] Is that what happens in football?

- [Nurse] Oh boy.

- [Doctor] So how can I help you today?

- They hurt ya, or they hugged you?

- Oh, they hugged you?

- Okay.

And then what happened?

(yelling)

Okay, so what I'd like to do is put a splint on ya,

and then send you over for an X-ray.

So where are you from originally?

- Yeah.

- Taiwan, huh?

So how'd you wind up in Unity?

- Well what do you think about American life?

- It's very good, huh?

- [Doctor] Well I never met anyone

from Unity that I didn't like.

(laughing)

so I guess you're alright.

(singing in foreign language)

(cheering)

- It's pretty cool, they ride in style.

- It wasn't, like I said,

trying to convert them into anything they didn't want to do.

But, they're here for an American experience,

and to learn English, and so it's good

for all of us to learn diversity.

- CJ I'm gonna ask you to pray for dinner if you would.

- [CJ] I can do that.

- Okay, let's pray.

- [CJ] God, thank you for the warmth that's here.

I pray that any evil that's been brought

will be stripped from us.

Prepare the hearts to serve and to receive.

Bless the hands that are serving

and the food that's prepared for us.

- I've had long talks about the kids,

about their Buddhist faith, about the Muslim faith.

Which has been good for me on the Muslim faith,

because of the issues, you know,

that America has with the Muslims.

And it's made me aware that there is the Muslim sect

that doesn't have the same feelings

as maybe some of the others that are, irate right now.

- I do know there was one gentleman that

is of German descent that wanted to know about Cem.

- And I think when he may have found out that

not only was Cem Turkish descent and Muslim,

I don't know, he never responded to Cem again.

- I thought to myself,

am I gonna treat these kids differently?

No really, to be honest I thought,

man, am I going to be able to accept that?

Because that was my preconception of Muslim faith,

that they all hated Americans,

and they all wanted to hurt us, and to bring us down.

And when Kan came and he doesn't eat pork,

it's like, I'm not gonna do anything special for you.

But then when you get to know them personally

and you really like them, yeah,

I'm gonna do something special.

I don't make him eat pork.

I cook him something different.

- Maybe we are more brainwashed than what we wanna think,

'cause I never wanna be radical about anything,

but yet I know what America's been through

because of the real radical Muslim movement.

So, yeah, you have to tell yourself

that you can't, you cannot,

treat somebody someway just because

somebody else did something.

It all tied into, just hoping that we can

all understand each others religions.

- The student body decides upon the themes for each day.

And then they kind of take it upon themselves

to teach the exchange students, this is what you need to do

to participate in your class, to help your class win.

And it becomes more than any school I've ever seen.

This sort of rivalry.

And of course every school has class rivalry,

but these kids know each other so well,

that they really team up and bond together,

and it becomes a whole nother level of competition.

(cheering)

- I had some really awkward pajamas that day,

I was like some sort of pink slip looking thing.

- When it was old peoples day for Homecoming week,

they came in character the whole way over.

It took 'em about 10 minutes.

We had three of 'em in a walker,

couple more with a cane, one in a wheelchair,

the other guy pushing the person in a wheelchair.

And Javon dressed up as Roger.

You know, it was just hilarious.

- Wednesday was video game character day,

which was interesting, I hadn't thought much into it.

And Caleb, he's making a video game,

so he had everything all planned out about Mario,

you know, and Luigi.

- Well, you need a green long sleeve shirt, which I have.

I'll bring one tomorrow, I promise.

- [Caleb] You said you had suspenders!

- I'm usually at the day before, last second,

moms mad at me for not doing this earlier,

and I'm tryin' to scrap together a costume and everything.

(rock music)

- [Justus] Oh my god!

(laughing)

- My sister made this.

- [Justus] Wow, that's actually, she did a good job.

- It doesn't look too bad, but it's kinda awkward.

You know what I mean?

- [Justus] I'm just trying to catch you entire frame in this

little video camera thing.

- Is it working?

- [Justus] I'm still confused why you're a girl,

- I use a straightener.

it's just kind of, they mess around and stuff,

'cause me and Whitni, we're like related.

(clapping)

She's kinda awkward.

- I was a little bit nervous,

I don't really like dressing up and everything.

Like, it's okay and everything,

but it's not my favorite thing to do.

(laughing)

what they needed to do, because Harry wasn't there,

and everybody got switched around.

Yeah, it was just like starting over again,

they really, they weren't familiar enough with the game,

to know what they were supposed

to do in a different position.

(cheering)

(whistle blowing)

Some of 'em were taking real beatings.

(slamming)

(whistle blowing)

- [Wayne] Boys, hey, pay attention!

- [Caleb] Okay, listen up!

- There's really, there's no excuses,

for them to be in our backfield,

before we even get the ball handed off.

You guys should take care of these guys, no problem.

- [Justus] I'm sure we can block Tuan,

you can block, I've seen you.

- Yeah, you gotta keep it up, every time guys.

You need to quit thinkin' about what we're doin' wrong,

you need to think about what we're doin' right.

And maybe do it right a little bit more, you know?

You know, that I've seen you blocking,

but if that one or two times that you miss a block,

a guy gets in there and gets us.

But I saw you doing it right a couple times,

let's just focus on the times you did it right.

- I thought at that point,

after that it would be a lot better.

so I wasn't expecting it or anything,

didn't have a chance to prepare for the impact.

- As far as I go, that was our last game I guess.

Kind of a sad note to end it on.

But, you know, coulda been worse.

and then there was some ligaments tore too,

so he's gonna miss, we're done playing football, but.

They had a good year, so we've had enough.

- We wanted to make Christmas an American tradition,

as we know it in the Derrick home.

Our Christmas tradition is that

Now we're gonna go get on the bus, and go to the branding.

I don't think that they ever fathomed

what rural America was.

I know numerous times they say that whatever their

perception of America was was what they saw on television,

in movies, and well that's New York City most of the time,

or LA, or you know, big cities.

And so I don't think they even

thought that we had open spaces.

- [Man] Okay, let's go!

(metal clanging)

- It's kind of a violent process, all of it.

They cut the horns off of the cows,

because they'll grow out of their head

and they'll actually curve around

and grow back into their head.

I think that the attitude with branding

is might as well just make it one big long bad day

for these calves and do everything,

brand 'em, castrate 'em, get the shots.

(mooing)

- [Man] I hate doing this, taken 'em off.

- I got to see Harry saw one of the horns off the cows,

and he just like, grabbed the blade and just twerked on it.

(mooing)

(laughing)

- [Man] Oh, you broke the wire!

(mooing)

- The boys reaction varied a lot.

Some of them were like, ew, that's so gross!

When they smelled the burning hair,

but some of them, like, dived right into it,

oh, this is so much fun.

I think a couple of the other ones

weren't quite as sad about it.

(mooing)

For me, watching them, it was a little funny,

because I've grown up around that.

I went to my first branding when I was like a year old.

- [Darla] This was too easy!

- You could like see on their faces,

like a little leery in the beginning,

then they're like, oh this is kinda cool.

(humming)

(laughing)

- [Darla] It's the cowboy way!

- [Man] Okay, they're really hot right now,

They're good!

- [Darla] It's something you either like or you don't.

- They all just equally, just jumped in and helped out.

And took it very seriously,

and they had a good time at the same time.

- What they learned here is what a redneck is.

That there are places where people know each other,

living off the land, the pictures of the boys

doing the branding says it all.

That just says it all.

It's just does get any real America than that.

- I moved away in 6th grade because

we needed to like, live in a bigger town,

so my stepdad could get a job.

And it was a lot of fun moving away,

but after a while I kinda missed the place,

so like, I came back this year,

and it was a really big change for me.

And I was like, sure, I didn't even know

what dance he was talking about at first.

- [Darla] Where's the TV changer?

I'll show you what kinda music's gonna be at the prom.

- The first thing we need to talk about is prom flowers.

So you need a white rose with navy blue

and silver ribbon.

You have to buy her a corsage.

- [Darla] I think maybe red baby

roses would be best for Alex.

Or you know what?

Hers should be pink.

- Now you've got to have your hair trimmed up.

- You're just sayin' that to get out of gettin' a haircut.

- No, that's true.

And they took it to where they shave those lines in it,

I actually had never met her or anything.

Elly approached me and asked me if I wanted to go with her,

Jovan and Park and Taun did not have a date.

I just think they were more excited.

- I made chicken Alfredo and we set up the tables

like a restaurant would.

So it was fun for them, they enjoyed that.

I think that meant a lot to them.

Boy did they look nice.

- [Girls At Same Time] Am I exciting?

(laughing)

- Excited.

- Very excited.

- You turned a new leaf Caleb.

- [Darla] To good times, a lovely prom,

Does everybody have their money

- Yeah.

and waiting for our driver, and off to prom we go.

- Being nervous, yes, especially Kan,

because he, I think he has a crush on Celina.

- [Darla] That was a huge thing for him.

- I don't think he was extraordinarily happy

that a couple of the other exchange guys had dates

and he didn't have one 'cause

there weren't any more girls at our school.

- Then he kind of started hanging out with one

of the other schools that I think had exchange students.

- And it was like, suction on to her face.

(laughing)

- And it was like they were supposed to be dancing,

but they were just like makin' out, just.

It was a little bit weird, and it was funny,

and then I think he got sick.
