welcome back to my mix lab

my name is reed stefan realest puppet in

the game

and this is how you mix hip hop in fl

studio

we're going to be building an entire

mixing template for your beat

and vocals and mastering from scratch

in fl studio 20. so let's get started

from a blank session

so the first thing i like to do is grab

all my samples

from wav files and drag them in right

here onto the top channel

and then i'm going to hit command a and

just drag them all to the beginning of

the session just to keep it organized

now the next thing i want to do is

assign all of these stems

to mixer channels and a great shortcut

to do that is to open this window even

though we're not actually going to be

producing anything

double click the top this is just a

shortcut to select on your channels

and then go to your mixer right click

route selected channels starting from

this track or hit

shift command l and this is going to

take all your work and turn it into a

channel

now i want to organize my channels a

little bit better by color

so i'm just going to go here and let's

do

let's do all the wrap vocals a purple

color

and we'll have our wrap doubles be just

the lighter shade of that same purple

so that we know that they kind of belong

together perfect and now

since let's pick a substantially

different color for synth so like a

greenish so that we know what's going on

there

and then all of our drums i think we'll

just keep this purplish

thing going so let's just change color

and we've already gotten a good part of

the way through setting up our template

the next thing i want to do is just

remove the fruity limiter

we're going to be replacing this with a

limiter that sounds better so there's no

point in having this but

for now we'll just leave this empty and

now let's take a listen and see what

sort of basic mixer adjustments we can

make

just on these raw stems now that we've

got everything organized and colored

in it

uh

completely our harmonies about halfway

and our background vocals just a little

bit

and since we just have one stack of wrap

doubles and ad-libs all kind of mixed

together

we're going to treat these especially

with their own plugins but the next

thing that i want to

set up in this template is the routing

and by default

every channel is routed to the master

and that's not exactly what we want we

want to actually create

some summing tracks so i'm just going to

click here

and let's call this vocals and we'll

give it a color

and this is what's interesting about fl

studio is

every track can be routed as a send

track

or a summing track you can really make

any track whatever you want which is

actually quite flexible

so quick way to just take each one of

these vocal channels off the master is

by clicking here

just click each channel and then take

each one off

and we're going to send it to this new

channel that we created instead

so we don't hear it twice

singing lead all right just a couple

more all these are gonna get sent to our

vocals group two

boom so now let's send this

to this and then we're gonna send this

to this very easy just click click

next thing i want to do is set up a

similar sum for all of the drums and

then another one

for all of the beats but since we're

here next to vocals let's just have the

next one

kind of makes sense to have this one you

can actually just shift click up here

b or you can call it music sum whatever

makes sense to you

b all right so now let's take all the

routing here take it away

so we got our 808 straight to the b our

synth straight to the beat

let's send our chance straight to the

beat

boom since that's not a drum but the

rest of these are drums so i'm going to

be creating

another channel here just shift click

and we'll call this

drum sum make it another color

our drums are purple why not just match

that i guess

let's route all these to drum sum so

start with bongo

and then click drum sum a little

repetitive but that's why

i included the download in there for you

so

i can do this boring part for you guys

sending the kick to the drum sum

is optional really depends on uh what

kind of kick you have since this is a

short

not so bassy like there's a separate 808

that's really what i would determine it

with

may as well send the kick to there too

so let's go here

and then send it to our drum sum

and now the next thing is with this drum

sum we don't want it to be routed

straight to the master so we're going to

take this

off and we're actually just going to

route it to here straight to the beat

[Music]

so now our beat is routed straight to

the master all of our vocals get routed

to our vocal some

we're really ready to go so let's just

hit save so we don't lose our progress
