I originally founded

and we started doing a lot of
the Hollywood nightclubs.

So Adea was one of
our hookah girls.

Adea Shabani was
from Macedonia.

She had come to Hollywood.

She wanted to become
a movie actress.

Her whole goal was just to come
and take Hollywood by storm.

We used to nickname her
Mother Nature, because she can

be beautiful and --
and calm and sweet,

and she can also
be a hurricane.

It was Sunday night --
my wife gets

a phone call from
our employee, Emma.

And now my wife
is on the phone.

"Emma calm down.
What's happening?"

And I can hear in
the background, and then I hear

my wife, you know,
repeating, "Police station."

She's going
100 miles an hour.

She explained the story.

"Adea hasn't called me,

she hasn't texted me,
and she's -- she's missing."

What do you mean,
she's missing?

Adea was the type
that always text them.

Like, it was -- it was
just a constant thing

throughout the day, they'd have,
like, 30, 40 messages.

So her not texting was
obviously an issue.

We went into the police
station, but they just couldn't

file anything until
72 hours had gone past,

which was insane to me.

So something
needed to happen.

So I get in my truck, head over
to where Adea's apartment was.

Adea had no family here.

She had no relatives.

I had to do something.

SARA: Adea Shabani was this
beautiful young actress with

big dreams to be
a big star in Hollywood.

She had
these gorgeous big blue eyes,

blonde hair, very stunning.

She was born in Macedonia.

She had a bug to perform
from a very early age.

JENNIFER: She enrolled in
the Stella Adler Acting Academy.

It's a very prestigious
acting academy.

A laundry list of celebrities
have graduated from that place,

people like Salma Hayek and
Mark Ruffalo, and it's just

a stone's throw away from
the Hollywood sign.

SARA: Adea had a long road ahead
in her acting career,

but she was so outgoing,
and -- and so gorgeous,

it was hard not
to be drawn to her.

And so she had all
these encounters

with people that were
obviously goals for her.

She ended up getting
two nonspeaking roles.

In 2016, she moved
to Los Angeles, Hollywood,

the glitz, glam capital of
the world.

And right down from
the Hollywood Walk of Fame,

she got an apartment at

ANGEL: This is where Adea
had her studio apartment,

and we ended up, you know,
trying to get into the building,

except for, as you can see
there, there's gated doors,

so we couldn't get
into the building.

Security found out about us.

So basically, they kicked us
off the property.

They wouldn't let us in.

After 72 hours,

none of us really sleep.

The welfare check comes through,
they go up to the apartment,

they find the door open,

but no signs of forced entry,
no signs of forced exit.

And it was just
an open door.

But why would Adea leave
her door open in Hollywood?

That's when I had called all
the news channels, trying to get

the story more attention,
because without attention,

nobody was going to do
anything about the case.

She was last seen
in the Hollywood area,

near Hollywood Boulevard
and Wilcox,

around 2 p.m. on Friday.

MAN: This is the acting
studio aspiring actress

Adea Shabani would have
attended Wednesday night.

She wants to be an actress.

I know that sounds typical,
but she really loves

this thing, and she reads
about it, she studies the art.

She's totally obsessed.

She loves being on social
media, she's really active.

She was not replying to text
messages, she was missing.

So I got worried.

ANGEL: The thing that concerned
me the most and made me want to

there's a lot of cases of
missing girls, and they just

don't solve every case,
or if they get to it,

they might get
to it too late.

SARA: Over the years,
I've been

a legal analyst
for breaking news stories.

There was a segment on
Adea Shabani, and I was shocked.

Obviously, she was stunning.

She caught my attention.

She caught my attention.

This was a story that really
broke hearts

as it made headlines.

We've been trying to do
everything what we can,

looking for her --
we are scared,

but we are praying, and we are
trying to think positive.

In a criminal investigation,

the police start to look
at who the victim was.

Where was she studying?

Where was she living?
What was she doing?

And most importantly,
who was she last with?

And most importantly,
who was she last with?

ANGEL: Adea worked
for me at the time.

In the club industry,

we come across a lot of
crazies, a lot of crazy people.

And it's happened, you know,
multiple times where a girl

won't feel comfortable with
someone, she'll call security,

they'll come in,
they'll throw them out.

Nothing happened like that
with Adea.

We couldn't think of
anybody in the club, though

it was a possibility in
the beginning that it could be.

police that we have suspicion
that it's her boyfriend.

Chris Spotz, who's 33 years
old, is originally

from Colorado.

He is pleasant looking,
he was a licensed nurse's aid,

but the medical profession
wasn't for him.

His dreams were
to become an actor.

They kicked me
out of the New England

Art Institute, and they dare
hang crap like this.

JENNIFER: So he enrolls in
the Stella Adler Acting Academy

in 2017, and that is where he
meets 25-year-old Adea.

The chemistry was off
the charts between Adea

and Chris, and they started
dating each other.

Adea was off her rocks.

She was so happy,
she was so in love.

She was so --
you know, she felt

like everything was finally
starting to come true.

Chris and Adea started
talking about moving in

together, and he ended up
meeting with Adea

at some fancy restaurant,
and supposedly, he proposed,

and he told her that we should
definitely move in together.

It's a very big deal,
because that's

all she's been wanting
this entire relationship.

SARA: After a few days,
investigators start

gathering camera footage
from the Duet complex.

And they're able
to see that she's with

a man that looks
like Chris Spotz

from Friday, February 23rd.

So now, they're beginning
to see that

she left her apartment
building with Chris Spotz.

So that's where all
the attention is.

Did Chris have anything to do
with Adea's disappearance?

And if so, where is she?

When the police start to look
at their relationship,

something unsettling.

had two fiancees
at the same time.

ANGEL: Three weeks before
she had gone missing,

she started talking to me
about her boyfriend,

Chris, and what
they were going through.

And it was the first time
I saw this fiery jealousy.

She was explaining that Chris
was with somebody else --

Mary, I believe her name is --
Chris's fiancee,

but that they had
an arrangement,

and he was going to leave
that person.

She didn't really go into
details or anything like that.

I was telling her that, you
know, well, you know that a lot

of people kind of use
that story where yeah,

I'm with this person, but I'm
gonna leave them for you,

and you can see
the fiery jealousy in her eyes,

like, no, he would
never lie to me.

He's gonna leave her,
and we're

gonna live together happily
ever after, and --

and walk into the sunset.

SARA: When you have two women
and a guy in these sort of

there's a concern that
the other woman wanted

to whack the new girlfriend.

So investigators start
gathering this sort of

background information on
Chris and his fiancee, Mary.

And then they delved deeper.

JENNIFER:
Chris was living with Mary,

who he'd been with
for several years,

and she was a nurse,
and it was her full-time job

that was supporting
his acting career,

which is one of the reasons
why he didn't want to break up

with her --
she was his sugar mama.

Chris manipulated girls.

he preyed on girls.

This was toxic.

This was a man who was
living a double life.

extreme control over Adea
in this relationship.

It was the worst relationship
she could have ever had.

Adea was very much aware
of Mary,

Chris's fiancee, but it's
unknown whether Mary knew

about Adea.

So by February of 2018,

Chris also says Adea
he's going to move in with her,

and they have the target date
of March 1st.

Adea is so happy,

because she's not only
gonna be marrying Chris,

they're gonna be moving
in together.

They're gonna have
a beautiful life.

She starts talking
to friends about churches,

wedding venues,
marriage licenses.

Adea told her friends
that she believed she

absolutely ecstatic.

She really wanted
to have his child.

There's only one problem.

They can't move forward,
because he's still with Mary.

Homicide is the leading
cause of death

among pregnant women
in the United States,

and that often stems from
a pattern of violence.

And so she did come back
and say to her friends,

she thinks she's pregnant
with Chris's baby.

That must have absolutely
freaked him out.

Upon reading the story,
as someone who's

been in this field
for 23 years,

there were
so many red flags.

But as a young girl
in her early twenties,

moving to Hollywood,
all alone, no family,

no friends,
it can be scary.

It can be nerve-wracking.

It can be nerve-wracking.

But finding someone
who understands you and wants

the same thing you want,
it gives you a sense of comfort,

and -- and I believe that's
what she felt in Chris.

Little did she know
that things

were gonna take
a very different turn.

So it's Valentine's Day 2018,
and you've

got a guy who has
two fiancees.

Chris spends it
with both of them.

He goes to lunch with Mary.

He goes to lunch with Mary.

He then takes Adea
out for dinner.

Chris goes over to
Adea's home, and at some point,

he leaves and goes back
to his house, to Mary.

The next morning,

Adea wakes up
and realizes

she had passed out.

She blacked out,
she doesn't remember anything,

and her phone is gone.

She used Find My Phone --
sure enough,

her phone was in
Chris's truck.

There's so many
questions surrounding

the night of Valentine's Day.

Why did Adea black out?
Why was her phone gone

and later turned out to be in
Chris's truck?

Did he roofie her
to take her phone?

Where would he get
the roofies from,

if he did, in fact,
roofie her.

WOMAN: And what have you been
doing since Friday?

Just ask people to put fliers,
talk to people,

you know, spread the word.

-Social media.
-Treat it as if it

were some of your own
family members,

some of your own friends.

ANGEL: There was another
ex-boyfriend that flew out

to come and look for Adea
in California.

JENNIFER: Adea had
an ex-boyfriend

who she was
great friends with.

When authorities try to
interview her ex-boyfriend,

he was very forthcoming
with police.

He was on her lease.

He was on all her online
accounts, and he was able to

give authorities
all the information

that was in her cloud,
her cellphone history,

knew all her passwords.

He was sharing in hopes of
finding where Adea was.

SARA: Our phones today
are a bank of evidence.

You know, there are contacts,
there are text messages,

there are social media
comments and DMs

and all kinds of things
that leave evidence behind.

And investigators find that
there were recordings on

her phone about this
altercation in his truck.

SARA: Adea tells her friends
that she's beaten.

Late that night,

LAPD Dispatch

received two 911 calls
from Adea's phone.

She had not waited to speak
to dispatch,

so there was
no recorded call,

but there were definitely two
attempts from her phone to call

911 that same evening.

This is a clear escalation.

This is a clear escalation.

We are going through a lot.

This is -- we --
all of us love her.

There is no person --
everybody loves Adea.

ANGEL: At this point,
we're still in hopes

that Adea's alive, we just
don't know where she is.

Everybody was helping,
you know, it wasn't

a one-person effort.

We tried
to contact everybody.

Nobody knows anything.

We're putting out flyers,
social media.

We're putting out flyers,
social media.

JENNIFER: I remember
this beautiful girl,

just staring at you,
knowing that friends,

family, and loved ones were
desperately looking for

this girl.

They were offering
$25,000 reward

for any information
on her whereabouts.

The only problem with
the detectives is that

they're building a case
against Chris Spotz,

they're building a case
against Chris Spotz,

not necessarily to find Adea.

So they were busy
doing their thing,

and we were busy doing
whatever we had to do.

We just started pulling in as
much information as we could.

All of my staff
at the time were

helping out -- my wife,
a few friends overseas.

Anybody that can get
any kind of

information was looking up
details about Chris Spotz,

and we were trying to look
up anything

on Find My Phone
for Adea,

on Find My Phone
for Adea,

anything that would just give
us a little bit of a string

so we know where to start.

Adea's mom wanted to generate
some press on helping to find

her daughter,
hires a private detective

in the Los Angeles area.

He was the liaison between
the media and the police to

try to help find her daughter
while she was in Macedonia.

We have no evidence
that she is a runaway.

She's not
a voluntary missing.

We don't have any evidence
that she wanted to harm herself.

We don't have any evidence
that she wanted to harm herself.

ANGEL: Whenever we did get
certain information,

we would send it
to the police right away,

and Jayden was pretty good
with that.

You look for her
where she frequents.

You try to look up
anything online.

Usually,
if somebody tags a place,

it'll pop up online.

And we couldn't
find anything.

After that,

we get a lead on a hotel,
the Sheraton

in Universal Studios,

that Chris Spotz was
staying there.

Jayden had somebody who was
working with him and sends them

to the Sheraton.

They got us the room number.

We figured it's one o'clock,
two o'clock in the morning,

so we call the room,
and the phone is ringing.

[phone ringing]

We can hear it, nobody picks
up on the other end.

Chris was hotel hopping
all over L.A.

We started calling
different hotels,

but in completely
different areas.

So now we're moving from North
Hollywood, and we're going up to

like, you know, Burbank,

we're going to Glendale,
we're going to Sun Valley,

we're going to all these --
these other areas,

but we look around,

and we see a restaurant,
so we go to the restaurant,

we tell the guy, like, hey,
here's a picture of Chris Spotz

and Mary and said, you know,
have you seen them?

and Mary and said, you know,
have you seen them?

And then they were like,
well, they

were just eating here, like,
30 minutes ago.

And that's when we knew that

Mary was -- was actually
traveling with him.

We didn't know what Mary's
involvement at the time was.

Mary was a nurse.

We started putting
plausible outcomes

that they drugged Adea.

Mary, she has access to meds.

We didn't know if she had
no idea or if she was in on

the plan and helped.

We just knew that,
at that point, Chris

took her,
and we need to find her.

SARA: As
this investigation unfolds,

the investigators get
the cooperation of

Chris's family.

Now, Chris's family appears to
be very firmly standing by

the belief that there is
no way that Chris

could do any wrong,

that Chris is not
that kind of guy.

I mean, he had no
criminal history, after all.

The investigator was able to
get their cooperation,

and that leads them to share

Chris's Google sign-in
credentials, and that is

the golden nugget
in this case.

He had not turned his own
Google location off.

So that's what allowed
investigators to

be able to get
his digital footprint.

On February 23rd,
from before he picked up

Adea, all the way through
the end of that evening,

they were able to show
where he was, who he

was with, and what he may
have said to people.

The police had
no evidence that

Mary was at all
involved in this.

And then on the phone,
they saw messages between Adea

and Chris, where Chris
is telling Adea that his uncle

and Chris, where Chris
is telling Adea that his uncle

passed away in
Sacramento, and would she go

with him to the funeral,
and, of course, she says yes.

That would line up
the elevator footage

of her leaving with Chris

with her suitcase packed --
that's what Adea was doing.

She was going to Sacramento.

JENNIFER: But when the LAPD
checks with Chris's family,

he doesn't have
a dead uncle.

Everyone is desperate
to find Adea.

And it's been 11 days.

So, yeah, we are scared,
but we are praying.

Nobody knows where she is,
and even the LAPD

don't really know
if this is homicide

that needs to be investigated,
or she's just

another missing person
that might come back.

ANGEL:
I didn't go to work at all.

My wife took over
my responsibilities.

So there's a part of me that
hoped that it wasn't Chris.

There was a part of me
that hoped

that she just wanted to go off
the grid, and I was praying that

that was the case scenario.

You know, because then we're
all wrong, and that's great.

JENNIFER: Authorities
can't get a hold of him.

JENNIFER: Authorities

Chris puts up a wall
with the LAPD,

but he then finally answers
them through an attorney.

Chris's attorney says
Chris really doesn't have

any information about
where Adea might be.

They were together on
February 23rd.

But as they were driving north,
when they were around that

Santa Clarita area of
the freeway, they had

an argument, and he let Adea
out of his car and never saw

an argument, and he let Adea
out of his car and never saw

her again and has not heard
from her.

So these are not Chris's own
admissions coming out of

his mouth,
but a lawyer responded

that he never saw her again, and
he never heard from her again.

JENNIFER: All police have to go
on is the statement of

him saying he drives off
and never sees her again.

But the only problem is they
can't confirm it right away.

Authorities don't get
any reports

of anyone stranded
on the freeway.

There's no sign of anyone
having checked into any

local hotels,

and she doesn't show up on
any surveillance video either.

So authorities know this doesn't
pass the smell test,

and he now becomes
suspect number one.

Why would he lie
unless he was complicit?

At one point, we were getting
information on Mary's credit

cards to try to see where
she was purchasing things,

and that's how we found out
that they were in Colorado.

Chris Spotz is originally from
Colorado, where his mom lives.

So our theory was that
basically he was getting

money at this point from
his family in Colorado.

They were trying to help
him out.

They were trying to help
him out.

God knows what story
he's selling them.

Everybody was convinced that
Chris was running scared.

So we just basically started
canvassing the entire area,

and if they have any kind of tie
to the family in Colorado,

the goal was to reach Chris,
to find out where Adea was.

Today, I'm here to discuss
some developments

in the missing person
investigation involving

Adea Shabani.

Robbery homicide detectives
had traveled

to Fort Morgan, Colorado.

Their efforts were in
an attempt to locate Mr. Spotz

and take a look
at his 2015

Toyota Tacoma pickup
truck, as that was the last

vehicle that she had been
seen in.

By the time authorities get
there to try to talk to him,

he's already gone.

He's in the 2015 Toyota Tacoma
that authorities have now put

a Be On the Lookout for,
because they believe

something happened
in that car,

there may be evidence in there,
and they want to check it out.

While they're hunting him down,

everyone still is wondering
where Adea is.

Authorities received several
tips in the Nautilus area.

They started checking an area
that's called the Woods.

It's about 400 miles
north of Los Angeles.

Hundreds of volunteers,
investigators,

everyone scoured
the wilderness

for any sign of Adea.

ANGEL: It's a needle
in a haystack.

Imagine looking
for a body everywhere,

and you don't know where.

JENNIFER: Unfortunately,
nothing came up.

They did this
more than once.

JORDAN: The date was
March 22, 2018.

I was working
the graveyard shift.

I was working
the graveyard shift.

The weather that night
was crazy.

It was pouring rain,
and it was windy and cold.

They broadcasted over there.

There was a wanted vehicle
in the area,

of 2000s model Toyota Tacoma
bearing a Texas license plate.

This vehicle is wanted for
some reason

involving a missing person,

or there's a suspect is wanted
for a crime inside of it.

As we were driving westbound,
we actually came

up to this traffic light
right here.

I looked to my left --
there was

a black Toyota Tacoma
sitting right there.

So I grabbed my spotlight
right here, and I hit it

and turned it on,
and I pointed it

right at the front
license plate, and sure enough,

it was a Texas license plate.

I got on my radio.
I let my partners know,

hey, I have that vehicle at
the intersection of Main Street

and Escondido Avenue,
and as it

and Escondido Avenue,
and as it

pulled forward, I proceeded
to follow the vehicle.

The San Bernardino
sheriffs find

Chris's truck
in the Hesperia area.

JORDAN: And as it
pulled forward,

I proceeded
to follow the vehicle.

I turned on my siren.

And surprisingly enough,
the vehicle had yielded.

And surprisingly enough,
the vehicle had yielded.

[indistinct radio chatter]

I stepped out,
I was yelling as loud as

I could at the driver,
Christopher,

to get his attention,

but I couldn't see him.

I couldn't see him
in the mirror.

I retrieved my handgun.

I ordered the driver to shut
the vehicle off, which he did.

I then ordered the driver to
take the keys out the ignition

I then ordered the driver to
take the keys out the ignition

and -- and throw 'em out of
the window onto the asphalt,

which he did.

And then the next command
I gave him was to open

the door from the outside so I
could see his hand at all times.

And at that point, I noticed
he didn't follow that command.

So I repeated the command,
and nothing.

Got a little concerned that

he wasn't following
my commands anymore.

And at that point, I noticed
the brake lights come

And at that point, I noticed
the brake lights come

on to the truck,
and the truck start back up.

[engine starts]

So I don't know if he had
a second set of keys or he just

threw out a dummy set of keys

originally, but he was able to
turn the truck back on, and he

started to flee our location
southbound on the 15 freeway.

SARA: When he speeds off,
the sheriffs

then get the California
Highway Patrol involved.

And over the air told us,
hey, guys,

I just got off the phone
with LAPD.

Just be aware,
that vehicle

and the suspect inside of
there, whose name is

Christopher Spotz,

well, he's a wanted
murder suspect,

and the truck's possibly
the crime scene.

Just made my adrenaline go up
that much higher, because, like,

hey, I don't want this guy
to get away from us.

I'm gonna do
whatever I can safely

to apprehend this guy and take
him into custody hopefully.

SARA:
He keeps going and going.

An hour later,
the CHP in the --

in the course this pursuit,
rolled out spike strips, and so

finally, his tires are blown.

JORDAN: It came to rest,
and it looked like it was --

it was dead.

At this point, we still have
a trail of units behind him,

and everybody kind of
positions their unit as

and everybody kind of
positions their unit as

best as they can.

And me and my partner,
you know,

jumped out of our unit, and we
started running up between

these CHP units
to get a -- to get

a tactical position on --
on the suspect vehicle.

We heard one loud gunshot.

JENNIFER: When they approached
the truck,

they find Chris Spotz dead
inside with a single gunshot

wound to the head and a nine
millimeter by his side.

Adea is not in the truck.

Adea is still missing.

The investigation
to locate her is ongoing,

and the one person
who knows is dead.

ANGEL:
I was so pissed.

Instead of facing
whatever it is that, you know,

whatever justice that's
supposed to make anybody who

was involved feel good.

We felt defeated
after that, and we

didn't know what
we were gonna do.

I had promised...

I promised her brother

that I'd find her.

You know, it was...

he called --
he was overseas, and, um,

he was crying, and I told him,
you know, you gotta man up.

Your mom needs you,
your family needs you,

and everybody needs
you to...

to be strong.

I'm gonna find her.
I'll bring her home.

California Highway Patrol
pursued Spotz in his vehicle,

ultimately stopping off of
the 91 freeway

in Riverside County.

Christopher Spotz
remained in the vehicle,

and at some point in time
committed suicide,

dying as a result of
a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

We also believe that Mr. Spotz,
Christopher Spotz, was

We completely lost hope
when Chris is gone.

If he hasn't told anyone,

that secret goes with him
to the grave.

On March 25, 2018,

they get a tip to go
to Spenceville.

The wilderness area is about
430 miles from Los Angeles.

That year, in 2018,
in February and March,

it rained really,
really, really hard.

And what that did to that river
is it made the water go up.

it actually took away half of

the dirt that was on top
a remote location.

JENNIFER: When LAPD dive team
members start

walking along the creek
near the river,

they see some dirt
that is disturbed,

and they realize
it's a shallow grave.

in Nevada County,

50 miles northeast
of Sacramento.

OFFICER: Because of
the condition of the area,

we were not able to recover
the body immediately.

JENNIFER: The next day,

investigators, forensic
techs, painstakingly

extricate everything
to preserve evidence.

And they removed
the body from the shallow grave.

It's wrapped up in several
layers of tarp and rope.

The body was just
incredibly decomposed,

and so we don't know
who that is.

The next day, they take
the body to the coroner.

MAN: Just hours ago, the
official confirmation came out.

was Shabani's.

If it wasn't for her very
unique tattoos,

investigators would not be
able to identify her.

Wednesday she was identified

Her death has been ruled
a homicide.

That's where we held

Like 300 people
ended up showing up

in less than
24 hours notice.

She was a very, you know,

outgoing girl, funny,
around good people,

around good company
all the time.

She was a sweetheart.

She's very positive,
very happy person.

JENNIFER: One of the saddest
things about this case

is this bright light
was put out,

and we'll never know
what would have become

of Adea Shabani.

Her name did make headlines,

but not because of her acting,

because of her murder.

According to the coroner,
Adea died by homicide,

She was killed on the night
of her disappearance,

and Adea Shabani was
not pregnant.

and figure out his game plan.

He had time to strategize,

someone to help him
navigate without

being detected.

Who was it, you know?

SARA: There's been a lot
of criticism,

because there's a suspicion
that this isn't over,

because there's a suspicion
that this isn't over,

that there's an accomplice out
there, and the criticism is,

hey, LAPD,

you can't close this case
until you find the other

person involved.

Adea's family, of course,
got closure,

which a lot of missing person
families don't.

They found the body,

but they have no justice,
because Chris,

the only person of interest,
killed himself.
