When I was born,
I was actually a stillbirth.

I was dead.

And they had to
revive me totally.

Cerebral palsy is due to a
lack of oxygen to the brain,

so the brain cells that would
allow me to walk are dead.

I almost need help
with every single thing.

WoWhen the doctor said
he had cerebral palsy,

we didn't even know what it was.

And I just felt
like my whole world

had just fallen apart, you know?

Because it's not a
matter of having

a child that has a challenge.

It's just that you
want a healthy baby.

I have CP
all throughout my whole body,

and I'm very, very spastic.

I have a lot of muscle spasms,
and I need a lot of assistance.

Cynthia: It's getting
tougher all around.

His weight actually
hasn't changed,

but I'm just getting older,

so it's getting harder to
get him up all the time.

As time goes on and everything,

there's less and
less for him to do.

I know it's not her fault,
but every now and again,

I'd like to get out
of the damn house.

I had been looking for a
creative outlet for a long time,

and I discovered Zeno.

Everybody's watching the TV.

Zeno is an organization
that brings people with

and without
disabilities together

to make a real movie every year.

The mission of
Zeno is to support

lifelong friendships
between people

with and without disabilities.

35 people and

we all get together once a year

and make a film.

The way I kind of see it

is like a social experiment
in, like, extreme diversity.

My husband Will and his brother
Peter and Peter's wife Ila,

the four of us are the directors
of Zeno Mountain Farm.

And he's sometimes better with

guys, like, just
start out like...

WoWe're really honest about
what people's abilities are.

And you're asked to contribute

those abilities
and those talents

for the betterment of the group.

Yes! So here's how
it's going to work.

Acting is something
that I always wanted to do.

My DVR is, like, always 90%

'cause I DVR so much stuff.

So, when I first found Zeno,

it seemed, like,
really adventurous,

so I wanted to pursue
it right away.

I started getting emails
on Facebook from this guy AJ.

And I told him I would
love to come, and he said,

"It sounds like we would love
to have you."

You sound great.

"But the thing about it is,
there's no space."

So, every now and again,
like every couple weeks,

I would send him an email,
"Is there space?"

"No, no."

You got six notifications.

Cynthia: At one point I thought
he was just irritating the guy.

He'd say,
"Ma, can you call Will Halby?"

And I'm like, "Didn't you just
call, like, three weeks ago?"

And he'd go, "You know,
can you just call the number?"

So I would,
and so this Sunday morning,

caller ID says "William Halby,
Will Halby."

We had an opening,
an unexpected opening.

I was like there's this guy AJ,
he keeps writing me.

And I just got a...
Got a good feeling about him.

Will was like, "We would
love for you to come."

And I thought they would be
in a couple weeks or like...

Like another...
Like Will was like,

"We want you to come this week."

production meeting number one.

Welcome to Zeno Mountain Farm.

Yeah, we're going to make
a Western this year.

Shoot 'em up, baby.

The movie is called...
"Bulletproof Jackson."

This movie is really, really

awesome, and this
movie's different.

Like, we make movies
for our friends

and we raise money,
that's great.

Yeah.

But this year, we
wanna make a movie

that we can really take
to film festivals.

Like... Like, a real...
A real bona fide movie.

And to do that,
we actually have a script.

Whoa!

Like, proper
locations for this movie.

We're gonna drive
out to the desert.

There's this town
called Pioneer Town.

It's got, like, a
whole Western town.

It's got a jail and
a saloon and a...

And a whorehouse.

It's not... It's not
a real whorehouse!

It's a set.

We're gonna make a real movie,
and as exciting as that is,

it also means we're gonna have
to work a lot harder this year

than we've ever worked,
and I think it's worth it.

I think we should go for it

It's kind of sharp because you

My focus this year with the

movie is working
with the costumes.

We have to dress 36 people.

my own personal chaps.

I don't usually wear them with

pants, but, you know,
for the movie.

We got a lot of
the costumes from

the Universal costume house,

some of them from thrift stores,
some of them from friends.

And it really is sort of like
a hodgepodge, but it all works.

Since we're doing a Western,

We're really happy about
our ability to stay true

to the 1890's kind of period,

from the shoes to the ties
to the shirts to the dirt.

It's Hollywood dust.

all kind of shoot it together.

And everybody at camp

kind of puts in their
two cents of, you know,

how we can make this work.

film we did never

really saw the light of day.

Tides." It was a soap opera.

The second film we did
was a pirate musical.

We did a story about
a team of superheroes.

knowing that it

Bulletproof Jackson is kind
of intimidating at first,

but then he becomes a hero near
the end and everyone likes him.

In modern-day times,
I play Benny's girlfriend.

And then in Old West,

I am kind of like a
head prostitute.

"We begin to think that
they just might pull it off"

until a sinister laughter is
heard from the back of the room.

"It is Gar, who's been
watching the whole time."

Is that all you got?

I love playing the bad guy
so much because for me,

I could be a real good actor

to play of the, um, villain.

"Then he lifts the gun
and shoots good old George!"

The problem is, um...

I acted for about three
years in high school.

Because of my visual impairment,
I have to learn my lines

by either a recording
or someone repeating them.

People were telling me to relax

because I get to do
different takes.

But to me,
if I don't know my lines,

I have to focus so much
on the technical part

of learning the lines,

that I can't really
build the character.

I never mess up my lines,
but now for the movie, I...

I don't know if
it's nerves or...

I think it's nerves.

You ever see
that "Brady Bunch" episode?

Where like she just
saw the red light

on the camera and
then she's like,

"Uh, I don't even know
what I was talking about!"

I think I'm just really
nervous right now, to be honest.

But by the time
I'm on set I'll...

I'll remember all the lines.

Um, man, why can't I remember

But the
problem is there is

One of my roles is to match
up our guys with disabilities

with sort of an
able-bodied helper.

And that's always
a fun challenge

to match personalities

and see how that develops.

I had no idea what
I was getting into.

I knew once he got in,

I'm like, "Okay,
this is a full-time gig."

I thought maybe there would be a

nurse or someone
dealing with, uh,

the messy stuff, but it
turned out that it was me.

You have to be
really comfortable,

and you get heavy
doses in humility.

Um, more people have seen me
naked than I can remember.

Ah, yeah.

- That feels so good.

It's a pleasure
in a way to say,

"How can I do this
where it's gentle?"

We're in it together, and I
hope I'm doing a good job.

He's taking care of me
in a very personal way.

I think when you take care of
someone in an intimate way,

it's kind of hard not to form
some sort of an intimate bond.

How's that, brother?

It's good.

This is my normal life.

And you have to understand
that you need help.

And that's fine.

Judi and I just finish
each other's sentences.

We've been paired
for the last eight years.

There's lots of people
who can take care of Judi.

I just, um...

We try to coordinate
our schedules.

I know I love Judi.

She's just a nice girl.

I have a hard time
understanding her sometimes.

That's why I have
to ask Laura Davis.

Who wants daddy?
Leslie?

- Yeah.
- Hi, Leslie, how are you?

Her doctor
even recommended

that she gets it as
an outlet for her.

She spends a lot
of time alone, and

I think having that connection

and someone to talk to
is really good for her.

Nobody pays to
come to camp, and

nobody is paid to
take part in camp.

Camp is one of the only places
where our guys with disabilities

spend time with
people that aren't

paid to spend time with them.

When I'm at home,

I'm really not able to go out
and be social.

Cynthia: Ever since AJ
graduated from high school,

he's been going through
a lot of depression.

As a parent, you want to be able
to be there for your children

and do the things that they
wanna do, and with AJ,

it's a whole different level
because if I say no,

it doesn't get done.

but not a dollar short."

I don't know something
really lame like that.

I don't really want
to open myself

up to following
some of the things

that I wanna do,
because I'm not quite sure

like, we're just actually
just meshed together, you know?

I feel like I'm separate,

I've done improv games
in high school,

but this is my first
live improv show.

really good tools

for you to have as a performer.

really intelligent.

I would like to be
as good as her.

I think AJ is in for a tough
road to becoming actor,

but, um... but not... not so
tough that he shouldn't do it.

All of the hurdles
that he'll have to overcome

are similar to what any actor
has to overcome,

the multitude of rejection
and the try, try again.

You never really see anybody
with a disability on TV.

And I don't know if I'm crazy,

but my dream is to become
a professional actor.

- Can you do me a favor?

the Amazing Earl Jackson.

Well, what's so amazing

Girl: This is my first movie.

Jeremy's playing
Bulletproof Jackson.

I think he's doing pretty good.

You got to act very well,
you got to do your job right,

and then you get
it done, and then

you can go to sleep for a nap.

Jeremy's come a
long way in his acting.

We didn't always give him
meaty roles, actually.

The first few movies,
he was a bit player.

And, uh,
he's kind of worked his way up.

You broke up the
band over a girl!

He's really developed his
ability to become a character,

but he also has become a lot
more professional in his ability

to, um, hit his marks,
memorize his lines.

We needed to make a bust
of Jeremy's head for the film,

and it had to be accurate
for the movie.

So, we were lucky enough to
find a guy who does life casts.

You ever been to the dentist?

Yes.

You know when they do
the impression of your teeth?

You ever got that?

That same material is what
we're gonna use on top of you

to do the life cast.

- What do you think?

I am going to have to put
Vaseline on any facial hair

He's lubing me up.

So, we're gonna start out
around your nose.

It's hard
for Jeremy to sit

still for very long
and to not talk.

That's exactly what he had to
do for up close to an hour.

Jeremy has Williams Syndrome,

which is a deletion of genetic

material on the
seventh chromosome.

Social, outgoing,
very musically talented.

They say that people
with Williams Syndrome,

when they hear music,
more parts of their brain

sort of light up
than other people.

I play by ear.
That's the

easiest way for me to do it.

Because notation's
very hard for me sometimes.

Wolt was clear
when Jeremy was two

that he had an ability
to play drums.

High school was hard on him.

He wanted friends.

Being social is what
he's all about, but

at band practice
or football games,

he'd interact with people,

he'd even interact
with the cheerleaders.

But, uh... But I
remember him saying

to me in those years, you know,

"Why can't...
Why doesn't anybody like me?"

Hey, Lee, how are ya?

How ya doin', buddy?

How ya doin'?

Not many people know
about Williams Syndrome.

It makes us look like pixies and
fairies and elves.

Talking to other people
is not hard for me,

but I just don't know how
they'll react when I meet them.

We are very, very
kind to people,

and sometimes they
don't like that.

Sometimes they want
people to be normal.

Brushing teeth has been hard.

Math is not a good
subject for me.

Folks with Williams know
what they cannot do.

He was like, "Well, why
can't I understand money?"

You know, because I have
Williams Syndrome."

You know, that's kind of it.

Holding a pencil,
writing his name.

When he was little,
he couldn't go down a slide.

He couldn't perceive
where he was in space.

Good morning.

Like Jeremy, Lauren
also has Williams Syndrome.

He's such a sleeper peeper.

Similar to Jeremy,
she's incredibly social

and loves to meet people
and is very sweet

and loving to her friends.

- I slept good.

You did?
Did you have any dreams?

- Yep.
- What did you dream about?

I was dreaming about
wolves and stuff.

I don't
consider Williams.

Syndrome to be a disability.

I think it's just a

and then he also plays Gar,

He has sort of a wonderful

cheeriness about
being a bad guy.

He's just great at
playing mean guys,

which is funny 'cause

he's a really nice
guy in real life.

WoThis is Zach when he
was about three months old,

his little baby picture.

We weren't sure
exactly what was going on.

They did a chromosome study,

and then it came back
that he had Trisomy Twenty-One,

which is Down Syndrome.

The hospital wanted him
to be placed in an institution.

They said he would...
That their words

were he would never
walk or talk.

He'd be a total vegetable.

And I told them
that I'm a vegetarian,

and I'll take my
vegetable to go.

And, um... I took him home.

Zach's totally independent.

You know,
he has his own apartment.

Zach:
Those are my, uh, trophies.

And right on top there
is the motorcycle.

Shelly:
He works later in the day.

Right now he's working at the
Children's Theater Company.

On Fridays I usually
get off the turnpike

and head over to
his dance class.

He gets there on his own.

And he's acted
since he was really little.

His acting really
comes from his heart.

Yeah.

And I just want you to kind of,
like, give 'em a little, like,

knowing Gar smirk and maybe
fan the cards a little bit

against your face,
and then just flip 'em at 'em,

just turn 'em around
and be like, booyah.

and how he's living to the
fullest with what he has.

You see how tense he is
and how much he's in pain.

And I talk to him all the time
about like what level he's at

or what...
You know, if he's in pain.

He's pretty much
constantly in pain.

I'm in pain all over
my whole body every day.

I would describe it as a charley
horse all over your body

every couple minutes
on rotation.

I do not get a break.

I have, uh,
arthritis in both hips.

I have a lot of joint pain.

I have a lot of muscle pain
'cause I'm so tight.

So I pretty much hurt from...

I don't wanna sound
like sad case, but

I pretty much hurt
from head to toe.

Cynthia: He likes
being conscious.

He likes being sober.

He doesn't like
that whole loopity

thing that pills does to him.

He can deal with pain
on a very high level.

And so when he got to the point
where he actually began to say,

"I really need more
medication," you know?

"My pain is really bothering
me."

I feel like my pain is changing
who I am, you know, as a person.

"It's changing my personality,"

I really had to be with him in
that moment and understand it.

To hear him say that and
still...

Oh, my God, AJ still wakes up
with a smile on his face.

He still wakes

up with a smile on his face,

and I don't understand
how he does that.

And I wanna be able to take
that pain away from him.

But I can't.

And I really, really want to.

But to get up in the morning...

and come in the room
and he'll still smile

or say something funny or

something like
that, and I just...

Sometimes I just really don't
know how he does that.

I feel sorry
about the situation,

but I try not to feel sorry for
myself because it's always...

It's just the way
my mom raised me.

There's always
a worse situation out there.

A lot of people with CP
aren't...

Aren't able to be, uh,
verbal like I am.

I may not have a lot of physical
ability or a lot of money,

but I have a lot...
A lot of love.

So, I'm very, very blessed,
so I try so hard not to focus

on what I don't have because
it could be a whole lot worse.
