Girls come from a small town
or from all over the world

to try to vie for the 12 slots
for Playmate of the Month

or that one position
of Playmate of the Year.

"Playboy," I've always wanted
to be in since I was a kid,

so I'm very excited.

Only a handful will make it.

What happens
to the rest of them?

♪ ♪

In the early '90s,
"Playboy" was so popular.

Playmates like Pam Anderson
and Jenny McCarthy

were very successful.

So many girls wanted to be
a Playmate,

and for one reason or another,
they wouldn't make it.

If the girls didn't make
the cut at Playboy,

they were shuffled off
into the shadow mansions.

♪ ♪

Now, the shadow mansions,

my father and the inner circle
from Playboy

created clones
of the Playboy Mansion

on a smaller scale to sort
of lure these young girls in.

It was very predatory.

These young girls have no idea

what's gonna hit them next.

♪ ♪

My name is Hugh Hefner.

I'm editor/publisher
of "Playboy" magazine.

When Hugh Hefner
was just 27,

he fashioned himself
and Playboy

as the face
of sexual liberation.

Playboy is one
of the most famous brand names

in the world.

I would like
to be remembered

as somebody who played
some positive part

in changing the social-sexual
values of my time.

I believe that Hef pulled
one over on the whole world.

The fantasy of Playboy
that he created

did not allow
for the consent of the women.

When it came
to Hefner's buddies,

you had to keep
those secrets quiet.

What have you got for free?

When you get someone
that powerful,

anything could happen--
anything.

The people who were
really there--

they're the ones
who know the real truth.

I want to be a voice
for the women

that suffered the most
at his hands.

He was the ultimate
celebrity insider--

a doctor who took care
of Hugh Hefner and had the run

of the Playboy Mansion,
but not anymore.

Witnesses say the doctor
could end up in jail.

Mark Saginor,

Hefner's personal doctor
and party pal for two decades.

♪ ♪

My father, Mark Saginor,
was Hugh Hefner's best friend,

and doctor for about 40 years.

Their friendship was, like,
next level.

Like, they were just,
like, soul mates.

All the girls would sort of
come and go over the years,

but they would remain constant.

Mark was a very prominent,
prestigious doctor.

The public should simply
be aware

that there are
inherent dangers to this.

Dieting without the addition
of significant exercise

is just inappropriate.

Mark was given credit
for saving Hef's life

when Hef had the stroke back
in the mid-'80s.

Dr.. Saginor had
carte blanche at the Mansion.

He had the keys to the kingdom

and he took that opportunity

to live his life
to the fullest.

Mark and I were friends.

I didn't see the side of Mark
that I guess other people saw.

The 19-year-old told
police he drugged her,

forced her
to perform oral sex.

Back in 2004,
my father was partying

at one of the Playboy Mansion
parties with a few girls

who ended up going back
to his house afterwards.

And I believe,

you know, they were
partying there as well.

She said Saginor called
in a second man

to take Polaroid photos of her
drugged out and seminude.

Saginor was banned
from the Playboy Mansion

after he was investigated
by the LAPD.

Hef, of course,
heard this news,

and Hef distanced himself
publicly from my father.

♪ ♪

He always wanted to be one step
removed from every situation

so that nothing
would ever come back

as, like, a direct
negative reflection on him.

He would actually be trying
to convince me

that smoking crack cocaine
would cure my asthma.

He's misusing his position
as a doctor

and as Hefner's friend.

He's using it
to ruin young girls' lives.

My father reacted very poorly
to Hef distancing himself,

because he felt
that he was the fall guy,

and he felt that he was a part
of something much bigger.

There are so many other men
in Hef's inner circle

who were part
of this underground system.

The bigger picture
is a operation

that had been in place
for many decades.

- All right, here we go, boys.
- Now?

- I'm rolling.
- 15 in a row.

15 in a row, eh?

[indistinct chatter]

For Hefner

and all the inner circle
from the Mansion,

it was a mindset.

It was a mentality of men

who look at women
as commodities,

as objects
that are disposable.

Girls were another form
of a game to these men.

Ooh, ah!

Oh!

Fantastic!
- That was a good game.

Oh, that was
a great one, huh?

In the late '70s
and the '80s,

there was this place
where Hefner and my father

and a lot of the men

in the inner circle
from the Mansion

would go enjoy
a night out playing games,

and it was called Pips.

Where are
the really in places?

The best one right now
seems to be Pips,

which was started by my man.
[chuckles]

It's a discotheque,
backgammon club.

Pips was a place that Hefner
invested in

along with Bernie Cornfeld,

who was
my father's good friend

and was also
Hefner's really good friend.

In the front room at Pips,
there was a dance floor,

and it just looked like
a regular club.

And then in the back,
there was a private VIP area

for people
who were very well-known

or established.

Backgammon and Monopoly
and poker,

and it was even girls.

I mean, anything
you could think of was there

and available.

As a teenager, I had a bedroom
myself at the Playboy Mansion,

and I would tag along
with the guys

when they'd go to Pips.

♪ ♪

Part of my job
was running downstairs

and greeting a bunch
of the girls

that would pile
out of the limo.

They were brought in

almost like you would bring in
a backgammon set

or, you know, you'd put chips
on the table for poker.

They were just part
of the game.

You know, you can bet
on a girl like,

"Oh, which one do you want,"
you know?

If I win something,
I get this one.

Who should this one go to?
Who gets that one?

It was a system
of trading girls.

They were not aware
of what was happening to them,

that they
were being wagered on

or used as sort of collateral
gifts within the games.

The girls
that would attend Pips,

some of them
could be Playmates.

Some of them were just guests
who showed up for the night.

But I think a lot
of these young women

were coming
from the shadow mansions.

♪ ♪

By shadow mansion,

I mean that these men
in Hef's inner circle

would try to emulate
what he created

in his own empire
at the Playboy Mansion.

And they would have
smaller versions

of the Playboy Mansions,

which I would refer to
as mini mansions.

They would house
these young girls

who would come to Los Angeles

looking for opportunities
to become actresses or models.

In the '70s, Bernie Cornfeld,

the guy who owned Pips,

was one of the first men

to set up
his own shadow mansion.

♪ ♪

I have diaries
from every year of my life

from the time I was seven.

That's not the one.
Here, '73 and '74 right here.

♪ ♪

My name is Sharmagne
Leland-St. John-Sylbert.

In the early '70s, I had
already been a Playboy Bunny,

but I was no longer a bunny.

Instead,
I was partners with Bernie

in this modeling agency.

♪ ♪

Just up the road a bit
from the Playboy Mansion,

there was the house
that was called Grayhall,

which was the home
of Bernie Cornfeld.

Bernie had a talent agency

for actresses and models,

and he had
a dormitory upstairs,

where he would invite
these young women

to come and live in his home.

♪ ♪

By the time I understood
what was going on at Grayhall,

it had already been going on
for some time.

Bernie, he would go
prowling at night.

He'd go prowling up
in the dormitory

and be having sex
with the girls up there.

I realized
that the modeling agency

apparently fronted
for Bernie's sexual appetite.

So, if you moved into
the house, you became prey.

You became one
of his next conquests.

Bernie Cornfeld
had a really nice house,

and we used
to shoot there a lot

for "Playboy" magazine.

♪ ♪

Marilyn Grabowski, my boss,

was the West Coast
photo editor.

She says, "I'm gonna have
dinner with Bernie,

and I want you
to come with me."

And so I went there.

I said, "Now, let me know
when you leave

'cause I'm not staying here
without you."

And so I'm sitting at the end
of this big living room,

and all of a sudden, I see her
walking to the door,

and I'm like...

So I grab my purse,
and I start to walk out,

and Bernie goes,
"Are you leaving?"

And I said, "Yeah, I got work
tomorrow," you know?

And he goes,
"Well, I know a better way out

so you don't have to walk all
the way to the front door."

And so he walks me
into a frickin' bedroom

and throws me down on the bed.

And I'm like, "God damn it,
Bernie, let me up!"

And I'm hitting him.

I said, "You know,
who do you think I am?"

So he finally lets me go...

and the next day I said
to Marilyn,

"How dare you?

"I told you to let me know
when you were leaving,

and you didn't do it,"
you know?

And for a woman to do that
to another woman is not right.

That's not cool.

In the '70s,
it was just Bernie Cornfeld

and the Grayhall Mansion.

♪ ♪

And as time went on,

so many other men

in the inner circle
from Playboy

really wanted to emulate
Hef's lifestyle.

The shadow-mansion system

really became much larger
during the '90s.

It became
this predatory movement

where the girls that didn't
make the cut at Playboy

were being really shuffled off
into this underground system.

So I would like now
to introduce you

to our new
1995 Playmate of the Year,

Julie Cialini.

[cheers and applause]

I feel like in the '90s
at the Playboy Mansion

was, like,
a whole different era.

It was all about more press

and bringing attention

to the women of Playboy,

and that's definitely not
anything that happened

in the '80s.

[dramatic music]

The women in the '80s
at Playboy,

I believe they didn't really
have as much of a voice.

It was more about keeping them
enclosed, you know,

within the Mansion community
and culture.

And then
as the '90s came about,

there was a shift.

Though millions buy the
magazine and video cassettes,

much of the Playboy mystique
has come to an end.

Hefner's private plane,
the "Big Bunny," sold.

Playboy's casinos, closed.

Hefner's bachelorhood,
endangered.

He says he's getting hitched,
to a centerfold, of course.

As you reached
into the '90s,

it was a big, big change.

♪ ♪

Still in the AIDS epidemic.

And in that time,

the party kind of ended,
I mean, for everybody.

So maybe it was time

for Hef to settle down
a little bit.

Hugh Hefner, do you
take Kimberly Conrad,

here present, to be your wife?

I do.

Hef settled down

in the midst of this pandemic.

It was a sad day
for all of us.

[laughing]

You didn't need to be
a fortune teller

to see that his lifestyle was
going to take a drastic turn.

Yeah, it is more
of like a family house.

You know, they all have to get
their sleep now.

[laughs]

Oh, during
the Kimberly years?

Oh, hell, no.
[chuckles]

Hef did not hit
on any of the Playmates.

Kimberly's presence

was definitely known
around the Mansion.

As far as talking to him,

we were told that's a good way

to get yourself blacklisted
from the Mansion.

You know, if we saw him
coming one way,

we'd go the other way.

♪ ♪

The irony of the '90s

is that the Mansion was sort
of shut down to the public,

and yet there was
more opportunities for women,

and then these women happened
to have personalities,

where they really stepped
into those opportunities

and owned it.

[photographers chattering]

I first started going
to the Mansion with my friend

Anna Nicole Smith.

Anna Nicole was the it girl
at the Mansion

and all through the '90s.

She was
Playmate of the Month, 1992.

Anna.
[applause]

And then she became
Playmate of the Year, '93.

I feel like
the '90s in Los Angeles

and especially
the Playboy Mansion

is defined by someone
like Anna Nicole Smith.

♪ ♪

It's a big check.
[laughter]

During the year that she was
becoming Playmate of the Year,

she became an international
sort of sensation

with the campaign for GUESS.

♪ ♪

And then you have
Jenny McCarthy,

Pamela Anderson.

These women are
sort of branding themselves

outside the Mansion.

I did my first cover for
"Playboy" in October of '89,

and I've got "Baywatch" now.

It's so exciting.
It's great.

All of a sudden, the public
was noticing them.

It became a lot more
mainstream and acceptable

to be a Playmate.

When you see somebody make it
really big because of Playboy,

like Pam Anderson
and Jenny McCarthy and stuff,

you're like, "Wow.

"Like, look at all the
opportunities that it brings

and how amazing that is."

And I was like, "I want that."

As a result, women flock
to Los Angeles from all over

trying to become Playmates.

This sophomore
is into advertising,

and she is not ashamed
of trying out for Playboy

♪ ♪

People come
from other places

trying to be the celebrity
or the star.

That's their dream,
and they're wishing for it,

but the competition
is so stiff

to be a Playmate.

So that handful makes it.

The rest
slip through the cracks

and get preyed on
by whomever is out there,

knowing that they
didn't make the cut.

♪ ♪

In the '90s, I believe
that these men around Hef

saw a very big opportunity.

For many years,

Hef had different men
who were out there recruiting.

My father was a scout.

They would put ads out
in the different newspapers.

"Want to be a Playmate?
Do you want to be a model?"

♪ ♪

And when you moved
into the '90s,

the scouts
would be circulating

throughout the nightclubs
in Los Angeles,

'cause all the young girls

that would come from out of
town would obviously show up

at the nightclubs.

And they would number
the level of girl

that they would meet.

♪ ♪

If they were super hot
and, you know, great physique

and they were, like, a ten,

then they would be brought
to the Mansion

and brought to a party

and given maybe an opportunity
to pose in "Playboy."

And then you have nine.

That was maybe given,

you know,
a lesser opportunity,

but still would be introduced
to people

that could possibly bring
her career to the next level.

And then you have the girls
that are, like, you know,

the sevens and the eights.

♪ ♪

These girls didn't make
the cut for Playboy,

but you don't want to just
throw away nice girls.

They're still pretty.

You know,
"What can we do with them?"

These scouts would invite
these girls

to these mini mansions

for these
modeling-agency parties

and offer them a place to live

and offer them
modeling contracts.

♪ ♪

The young girls believed
an opportunity

to really move
your dreams forward,

when, in fact, it was really
just all a facade.

Very quickly they're
crossing boundaries

that they never thought
that they would cross.

Once you're on this path,

it's very hard
to find your way out.

♪ ♪

[dramatic music]

- We're ready to go.
- Copy. All right.

[speaking indistinctly]

I'm Rachel Myers,

and I was a guest at many
of the Playboy Mansion parties.

When I first moved to L.A.,

I was working at a clothing
store in Beverly Hills.

Two older gentlemen came in
and said to me,

"Would you like to attend
the Playboy Mansion party?

If so, I can get you in.
You have to see someone."

♪ ♪

I went to someone's house.

This is someone in the inner
circle at the Playboy Mansion,

and I was told that the way
to get into the Playboy Mansion

was to show my boobs.

♪ ♪

I don't know.
I just did it.

♪ ♪

Photos were taken,
and there were photos

on the table
of multiple women,

and so I just thought
it was normal.

And so that's how I got
into the Playboy Mansion.

♪ ♪

At the Mansion,
I went with an older gentleman

who picked me up in a limo.

I was actually brought
to Hugh Hefner's table

and introduced to Hugh.

And I met some other older men,

and they would invite me
to the mini mansions.

♪ ♪

The mini mansions
were similar parties

to the Playboy Mansion parties
on a lower scale.

I would see the same guys
at the mini mansions

that I would see
at the Playboy Mansion.

So I think there was
definitely a learned behavior

from the Mansion
to the mini mansions.

These men got some ideas

on how to manipulate women.

♪ ♪

The experience I had
at the mini-mansion parties

is immediately walking in,

having all the men
glom on to you

offering you,
you know, lines of coke

or a bowl of,
you know, ecstasy.

If you refuse those,

they're trying to shove
champagne in your face.

You know, who knows
what's in the champagne,

if they've dropped
anything in there?

I've just seen it
too many times.

♪ ♪

I just would refrain and get
my own drink or my own water

and make sure
I opened it myself,

and that's how I avoided
being prey.

So that's the first red flag.

Second red flag
is they're promising you,

to come to this party,

you're going to get
a modeling contract.

At the mini mansions,
these men had come up to me

and given me their cards

and told me
that they would sign me.

Who's signing a contract
at night at a party?

So the grooming
that's happening

at these mini-mansion parties

is pretty obviously
not for modeling.

♪ ♪

At these parties,
in many of the rooms,

they were, like, you know,
setting up

these, like, fake photo shoots
where the girls would feel

like they were being given
this opportunity

to be a model.

♪ ♪

Maybe they were given
a drink to relax

and then whenever
that sort of would kick in,

then the girls
were, like, posing

without their clothes on.

♪ ♪

I just remember
walking in on them

and being, like, horrified.

These girls
were clearly drugged

and not coherent.

Maybe they would also

have somebody, like,
videotaping them,

and then that videotape
could be used as blackmail,

so they wouldn't tell anyone
or so that they'd sort of fall

into this underground system
of being available.

Basically, any powerful,
wealthy man in Los Angeles

who was on the guest list

to attend
the mini-mansion parties

was given an opportunity

to pay the owners
of the mini mansions.

"Spending time with her" is
code for "having sex with her."

I think many
of the girls stayed

in the mini-mansion system
because they were scared

of being blackmailed
with videotapes.

I believe others really didn't
have other opportunities,

and they thought that perhaps
if they would just sleep

with this next guy
and get it over with

that they could offer you
a certain opportunity.

♪ ♪

It's very hard for me

to look back on those times

because it's something

that I don't necessarily want
to remember or admit,

but it was a part of my life.

♪ ♪

As a young girl,
I was molested,

so I probably detached
from my body at a young age.

And so having that trauma...

♪ ♪

Made it easier...
[chuckles]

♪ ♪

'Cause I didn't own my body,
someone else did.

♪ ♪

I would say
to my younger self now

to not use your body
for opportunities.

♪ ♪

In the '90s, there was
at least six or seven guys

that I knew
in Hef's inner circle

that ended up setting up
these shadow mansions...

guys like Peter Nygard.

♪ ♪

For decades, Peter Nygard

has been fashion royalty.

I met Peter Nygaard
about 30 years ago

at one
of the mini-mansion parties.

He wanted to be the next Hef.

He would roll over
to the Mansion

and just go see Hef
and hang out.

They'd play cards.

♪ ♪

Peter Nygard has a house
in Marina del Rey.

It's huge.
It's, like, on the beach.

When I went to a party
at Peter Nygard's house,

he tried to pull down my top,
kiss my boob, and kiss me.

And I was like,
"What are you doing?"

Like, Peter Nygard
is a predator.

The news is completely true,
what they're saying about him.

The FBI calls Nygard
a predator,

and they allege he sexually
assaulted dozens,

if not hundreds, of women and
girls over a 25-year period.

♪ ♪

When I was in L.A. doing
the shooting for Playboy,

Nygard called me up.

I'm sure that he got
the information from Playboy.

I mean, where else?

I was stupid enough
to go to his house

when I was invited there.

♪ ♪

He was hinting about anal sex,

like certain kind of things
that he really liked.

And what he said to me
was the same allegations

that women were telling
about him.

He held me down,
and he sodomized me.

I didn't know what to do.

I had never felt
that kind of pain before,

and I was scared

♪ ♪

When I was there, he probably
could have raped me

or drugged me or something.

I was really lucky to be able
to escape that situation.

♪ ♪

Oh, I think Hef knew

definitely what was going on
at the parties,

because most of the people

throwing
the mini-mansion parties

had partied at the Mansion.

That's really what it is.

Of course Hefner's aware
of the system.

All of his friends were,
you know, housing these girls,

and they were the ones
who owned the mini mansions.

♪ ♪

In the '80s and '90s,

even my father's house
was a mini mansion,

a shadow mansion.

There were
so many different young models

living at my father's house.

Bernie Cornfeld
and these different men

who owned their own
shadow mansions

would stop by
my father's house

to sort of check
out the cattle.

♪ ♪

And then in 2004, my father
was made the fall guy

for this mini-mansion system.

Hef then publicly distanced
himself from my father.

My father was Hefner's
very good friend of 40 years,

and he was really upset

that Hef would sort of
turn his back on him

in that moment publicly.

At the time,
I didn't understand

why he felt so betrayed.

It led me to reevaluate
their relationship.

I started to connect the dots
over the decades.

That it was much more
than a friendship.

♪ ♪

[applause]

Say, aren't you
Brigham Young?

I am.

- The man with 50 wives?
- I am.

The man with 240 children?

- I am.
- Why, you should be hung.

I am.

[cheers and applause]

In my mind, for many years,

my father and Hef
were in a very close friendship

for many, many decades.

[dramatic music]

What I've realized over time
is that their connection

was much more
than just best friends.

It's my personal belief
that the love of Hef's life

was my father.

♪ ♪

Over the years,

my father, you know, really
gave up his family life,

his practice to be with him.

I don't know many men

who just basically give up
their own life

and then move
into some other man's house.

So, during my tenure
at the Playboy Mansion,

as far as Dr. Saginor
and Mr. Hefner,

I experienced those two
becoming very close.

I remember

"A Midsummer Night's Dream"
party,

and I noticed that, you know,
Mr. Hefner,

Mr. Hefner's girlfriend,

and Dr. Saginor

made their way up
to the bedroom--

Bedroom One--
that's Mr. Hefner's room.

You could paint the picture

I don't know,
but they didn't come back down.

You have admitted
to some homosexual curiosities.

How serious have any
of those dalliances been?

Not serious at all.

When you're involved
in the swing period

or the orgy period
of the '70s,

there was more than
a little bisexuality.

Mark became his best friend.

They took things really far.

They became
more than best friends.

♪ ♪

Yeah.

Yeah, they became that.

My father and Hef
had a spiritual connection

that I don't believe any
of these wives or girlfriends

could ever compete against.

♪ ♪

They had
a physical relationship

in the context
of these different orgies.

The orgy sort of started
as something

that was an opportunity
for people

to sort of experience
their open sexuality,

and then that sort of
turned into something

that was
a little bit more sinister.

It was just more
of a transaction

that was exciting

and that probably stemmed
from their own childhood.

Growing up, they were both
these weird, nerdy guys

who didn't date
a lot of women.

♪ ♪

So having control and power

over these types of women
at the Mansion

was something
that is very exciting.

You know,
the breaking down of a woman,

Watching them sort of fall
into something

where they're now
doing something

that maybe thought
they would never do.

Maybe they're
crossing boundaries

that they never thought
that they would cross.

There's some kind
of rush in that.

And then it's like anything.

You know, once you have something,

you need, you know,
more of that

to sort of create
the same feeling.

"So how do we recruit more
girls like this," you know?

How do we bring in
fresh meat?"

The bigger the situations
they created,

the more their energy
was on the girls,

seducing them into the world

and really just
breaking them down.

♪ ♪

And that, over time, I believe,

became something that turned
into a bigger picture.

♪ ♪

When you moved into the '90s

when Hef married Kimberly

and all the big orgies
shut down at the Mansion,

all of a sudden, we're taking
the party elsewhere.

- Yeah.
- They moved.

At Mark's, yeah.
- Yeah.

- Yeah.
- Yeah.

He only went
to my father's house,

'cause they're still partying
and doing--

you know,
they're "partying" together.

I mean, you can't just
stop the machine, right?

The machine must go on,
and that is something

that was now taking place
off the property.

One time I remember
being in a limo

with Hef and Anna Nicole.

We were heading
to a mini-mansion party

at Mark Saginor's house.

At the party, it just seemed

like all the girls
were on the menu.

There was, like,
10, 15 girls

living at my father's house.

Literally, they would just come
one by one down the staircase.

Even Anna Nicole--

I got the feeling
when we were at the party

that she was up
for grabs for whoever.

Anna Nicole was right
around 30 at the time.

Hef made some comment,

like, you know,
she's being phased out.

That's how it works,

even for someone
like Anna Nicole Smith.

They're used
for a certain period of time.

They are then
easily disposable.

I believe that there's
something exciting

in meeting these young girls

that will come
from small towns

that still kind of had
that light in them

and watching them
slowly burn that light out.

In the '90s,

once I moved
into my father's house,

he had these
different pictures of women

who were on all fours naked

with a leash
around the girl's neck.

When I would try to say
something to him, he was like,

"Well, they actually like
to be submissive."

They want to be dominated.

He was on drugs at the time

and offering drugs
to these young girls.

I remember walking
into his bedroom

and seeing these young girls
really incoherent,

and he would be, you know,
injecting them with something.

I grew up watching these girls
come in looking one way

and slowly becoming

someone that they probably
don't even recognize.

♪ ♪

One of the girls
who was spending time

at my father's house
for a while,

her name was Paulina.

She came here from Europe,
wanted to become a model,

and she's someone who I became
friends with instantly.

She was just so sweet and nice

and had such a light
in her spirit.

♪ ♪

At one of the parties--
I believe it was in Malibu.

Again, it was one of the
fake modeling-agency parties.

She was really high.

She kept looking for a guy
to help her get coke.

She's found the next guy,

and she went
in the bathroom with him,

and they did a bunch
of blow, I believe.

♪ ♪

For the longest time,
nobody came out.

♪ ♪

I walked in on the bathroom

and saw her laying down
in a pool of blood.

♪ ♪

I was scared.
I didn't know what to do.

And so I started
screaming for help.

No one came.

And then all of a sudden,

the owner of this particular
mini mansion called security.

Security came and literally
picked up her lifeless body

and brought it
into, like, the back.

And I'm like, "Wait a minute.
Where are you taking her?"

And they're like,
"We got it from here, kid."

And I never saw her again.

♪ ♪

[knock at door]

Many months later, there was
a knock at my father's door,

and there was this cute
little old man.

He pulled out,
like, a Polaroid picture,

and he said, "You know,
have you seen my daughter?

Her name is Paulina."

♪ ♪

I was conditioned from such
a young age, of course,

to be loyal to the men,

and so the last thing
I'm gonna do

is be honest with this man

about what I saw happen
to his daughter.

And so I just said, "No,"
you know,

"I haven't seen Paulina.

Maybe you have
the wrong house."

♪ ♪

And he put his head down,
and, you know, he walked away.

♪ ♪

I was too scared
to say anything myself

or to tell anybody.

I just I feel guilty that
I watched these young girls,

you know, many of them...

that were drugged and...

I just knew
what was gonna happen to them,

and I didn't do anything.

♪ ♪

How old were you
at this point?

Um...

I mean, it was
all the years.

[chuckles]

I feel guilty that I was there
attending these parties

and having fun,
and, you know,

and I thought it was fun.

I did have fun.

But it's devastating

that these young girls
were basically--

their spirits were really
sucked out of them,

and that's something
that I can relate to.

I thought since I was
the doctor's daughter

that I was protected,
I was shielded, you know,

against being
taken advantage of.

And then these same experiences
happened to me

that happened to so many
of these girls.

As a teenager,

I turned to one of my father's
friends for advice

and showed up at his house.

♪ ♪

He ended up
offering me a drink

and putting something
in my drink.

♪ ♪

Before I knew it,
I was, you know, out of body

and came to with him
trying to have sex with me...

♪ ♪

Telling me I had to take
my, like, clothes off,

and I was in his bed,

and the whole thing
was so horrific.

♪ ♪

For me, growing up
in that setting,

I was the only female that's
welcomed into this boys' club.

You know,
I felt good about myself.

I felt special and different.

And really at the end
of the day, I'm not.

I'm just the same as, you know,

any other girl who's coming
to Los Angeles

who's, you know--

who eventually is gonna be
sucked up by the system.

He's misusing his position
as a doctor

and as Hefner's friend.

He's using it
to ruin young girls' lives.

♪ ♪

Over the years,
I've seen it so much--

girls who were subject to...

these--especially
the mini mansions,

but, you know, really taken in,
you know, and their innocence

and their spirits
were really sucked out of them.

♪ ♪

In 2004,

when the girls
made claims against my father,

his medical license
was suspended

for a short period of time.

Mark Saginor is not allowed
to practice medicine

because he is a danger
to his patients.

It was definitely
a turning point for my father.

He checked into rehab.
He became sober.

During that time period

when Hef distanced
himself publicly

Hef and my father
still spoke on the phone

and then they did start
spending time together again,

especially towards
the end of Hef's life.

When Hef was passing,

the one that was by his side
in the end was my father.

After Hefner passed,

my father decided to marry
a young woman he met in rehab.

♪ ♪

I remember showing up
to this wedding,

and it was so surreal

to see these giant,
blown-up posters on easels

of Hefner and Mary O'Connor
and Keith Hefner.

My father and this woman
were at the altar,

and I remember my father,

you know, asked for this moment
of silence

within the group to honor
and remember Hef.

And he asked the orchestra
who is there to please play,

you know,
Hefner's favorite song.

And my father, you know,
had tears at the altar.

♪ ♪

And I just remember being

just so, you know, surprised
this was happening.

Like, we're basically
celebrating somebody

who's not here.

We're celebrating Hef.

♪ ♪

And I just remember
looking at everybody.

All the Mansion regulars
were there

with their Playboy pins,

and there was just
something about it

that just reminded me

of being in this sort of,
like, private cult.

Everyone in this environment
put Hef on a pedestal

and everything he believed in
on a pedestal.

I just felt alone.

I felt like I was the only one

seeing Playboy for what it is.

When I see this, it reiterates
in my mind even more

that it wasn't
about connection.

I do believe that
with all these men,

it was really about knowing

that you had power
over someone else.

And my father,
although he played a role,

he still wasn't
the master puppeteer.

One man did this--
Hugh Hefner.

Instead of giving
the young women

the right to consent
to any of it,

he simply took it.

When I was 18 years old,

I didn't get the opportunity
that night in Hef's room

to make any choice.

People should know
he was not a hero.

He was a predator.
That's what he was.

Let's get it out in the open.
It's time to talk about it.

For God sakes,

it's time for the Playboy
women to come forward.

This whole thing
that had to be a secret,

I've got to tell somebody.

It wasn't just
Hefner's buddies,

the big VIPs.

It was Hugh Hefner himself.

I think he hated women
underneath it all.

It was a total giveaway

when he brought out his
skeleton key and he told me,

why wouldn't I want a key
to every room in this house?

There was nothing in
the relationship with Dorothy

that I am less than proud of.

Dorothy Stratten--
she was psychically destroyed.

Hold Hef accountable.

Hefner was
a sexual predator...

that didn't care
who he damaged.
