And that's when I'm like,
wow, yes,

special that's brewing here.

and I clicked on it,
and I was instantly

We just don't know
who's hiding behind the screen.

the hospital.

but I remember one time,
she was crying in her room.

It's like starting to see

Like, we'd love to have
a meeting."

I remember calling my dad
and was like, um,

"Somebody wants to talk about
managing Christina."

They wanted to do a tour.

And he's like, what?
No way.

and her family invited her on

to be the opening band

And it was just, I mean,

a game changer forever.

The thing I feared
the most about

her rise in popularity

was that she would be

She was just very compliant,
very naive,

She was 16 years old,
and they needed

I'd do all the grunt work so
that when Christina was up,

I knew the whole venue layout,
I knew how to get in.

I knew what the food
was around there.

I knew when
your sound check is.

I knew when

So I really get that
ingrained in my head.

It's just like, hey,
I look after my sister.

MARCUS: She was playing in front
of tens of thousands of people,

every night,
when she was 16.

[crowd screaming]

JONATHAN: So I played bass in
Christina's band,

and we toward Europe.

Her fans would come up to us
and be like,

"Thank you so much, we've been
waiting so long for this."

And she would take so much
time after the shows to talk

to everybody,
she was talking to everybody.

It meant a lot to a lot of
different people.

We thought this is it,
she's gonna get signed.

Columbia records,

they wanted Christina
to do a showcase,

they wanted Christina

and we're out in California,
and they had a keyboard set up

on the stage, and, uh,

they had their executives
there, and she starts into her

routine, and she was just,
like, on fire.

It was just so incredible.

She was just going at it.

Toward the end of the song,
the president guy gets up,

and he's like,
"Christina, that's enough,"

and he's like,
"Christina, that's enough,"

and he walks out,
and he sits on the steps that

leads down, he says,
"That was incredible."

Said, "We love --
we love this.

We want to sign you."

And we were just bursting.

This is what she wanted,

to be signed, and, um, it was
around 7 o'clock that night,

we got a call,

said it was off, and Christina
was just devastated.

And so were we, of course,
but you know...

just keep on keeping on
kind of thing.

There's three million people

that are freaking in Hollywood.

It's actually one of the most
dense places in America.

A lot of these people

aren't gonna, like,
accomplish their dreams.

You have to have a fan base,
you have to have

the right timing,

you have to have
the right content.

Like, everything -- like, all
the planets have to align in

order to be a superstar,
you know?

So I've been doing songwriting
for about eight years.

In the very beginning of 2016
was when I met Christina.

So me and a bunch of other
amazing writers

had four days together to
start writing with her.

After that four days, like,
we were just, like, inseparable.

We were just spending every
single day together,

just writing music,

just writing music,

going on adventures,
just talking about life,

just, like, dating.

She, like, broke it to me,
she's like, "I love you."

I'm like,
"I love you too."

She was so infectious
and captivating.

You never know the definition
of love until you see it.

Christina realized that she

was consistently accomplishing
smaller goals,

meeting with the right people,

working on a lot of new music,

and doing what she had to do,

and...

I really do think
that she was on her

way to having the right thing
at the right time.

And then she was asked to be
part of "The Voice."

So she loved
that idea of, you know,

going on a show and competing
with other singers to try

and be the most popular one.

and we're all ugly!

There's two types of people
on "The Voice."

There's people who just can't
believe the opportunity

they're given, and others who
think that they deserve it.

It's a shame that all that
makeup isn't gonna

this is gonna change our lives.

be selected.

We were all just hoping --

So she just wanted to make it.

but who is really looking at
you, and what are they thinking?

She went on tour, and she was
very happy with there.

a lot of people who were like,

So I was like,
sure, why not? I'll do it.

STEPHEN: I got to see her,
like, one last time.

I'm so glad, so glad
that I just got

to see her, like, that one last
time by ourselves.

While she was on tour, we would
text each other every day.

We just missed each other
a lot.

It wasn't the best tour
we were on.

We were very looking forward
to getting home.

after her show in D.C.,

she's like, "Bria,

I was driving home from work,
and I'm talking to my wife,

Tina, and she said, "Uh, Bud,

"from Orlando tomorrow
into LAX,

"and Marcus called
and wanted to know

if you could pick them up
at the airport."

MARCUS:
It was just another day.

It was the biggest venue of
the tour, too.

There was an opener,
then there was her.

She had just gotten off
the stage, and she called me,

and she told me how good
the show went,

and she was like,
"I have

to do the meet and greet,"
and I was like,

"Call me when you get done."

Our bags were packed before
the meet and greet.

It's in the bus,

we're ready to go, like,
we're going to go to a hotel,

we're ready to go, like,
we're going to go to a hotel,

spend the night, and then
we leave in the morning.

So after the meet
and greet line forms,

just a normal meet
and greet,

just, you know,
people are coming to take

pictures, sometimes I'll take
the picture for them.

But otherwise, I'm just
standing there next to her.

SARA: These are people that
know her maybe only on YouTube,

you know, and they finally get
to see her in concert live.

So it was a real huge, big deal
for her and her fans.

At some point, the line --

it was towards
the end of the line,

there was still,
if I remember correctly,

at least 15 other
people on line.

It's just like,
someone reaches for something,

pulls it out...

MARCUS: It's just like,

hear, like, pop.

Then I just remember
she falls over.

I mean she was, like, an arm's
distance away from me,

and...

And I just go after him.

My gut was like,
"Get the gun away."

And I'm just like wailing on
him, and I wrestled him to

the ground, and I just remember
getting the gun away from him.

and then he's up, backing up to

the wall, and he's got a gun in
his hand, and I'm thinking,

like, oh, okay, I'm dead,
that's it I guess.

And then he just pulls it to
his head, kills himself.

And suddenly everyone is
calling 911.

There's chaos. People are
running out of the venue.

They're just frantic.

They're frightened.
They're terrorized.

I didn't touch Christina or
the other body, but I did go up,

she was gone.

So I -- I knew that she was
not suffering.

There was no suffering.

There was no goodbye.
Nothing.

I'm sorry, I haven't talked

This is the hardest part to
tell, because it's still...man.

My dad just conveniently
happens to call me, like

he just -- he calls me.

He answered the phone,
and he was out of breath.

I just said --
I said, "Dad,

Christina has been shot,
and she's no longer with us."

[sniffles]

And I'm...what?

And he's, you know,
breathing heavy, and

I said,
"She's okay, right?

She's gonna be okay."

I couldn't think straight.

You know, you just cry out.

How -- how could this be?

This is the worst nightmare
for a parent.

I was with Bud, and

that's when Mark called,
to tell Bud and Tina

that she was gone, and, uh...

um,

I had to watch
two parents find out

that they're never gonna
see their kid again.

And I remember

Tina screaming
and falling to the ground,

because it's the darkest thing
I think I've ever been through.

I was woken up by my phone,
and I thought it was her.

Pick it up.

Hello?
It's Bud.

He just said,

"Christina went
home to the Lord."

[exhales]

And that was...

that was it.

Breaking news this morning.

Singer Christina Grimmie,

was shot and killed
after a concert in Florida.

I woke up, 2:35 a.m.,

and I go on Twitter, and my
whole timeline is filled

with tweets about her,
and I'm just...

with tweets about her,
and I'm just...

very, just confused.

A bunch of ominous things that
didn't make a ton of sense.

Everyone's just, like,
freaking out.

It's just chaos
and in complete disbelief.

[man over radio] Two patients,

the female patient
and the shooter.

[woman over radio] We have
officers on the way, okay?

MICHAEL: I was a detective
in the Homicide Unit

MICHAEL: I was a detective
in the Homicide Unit

of Orlando Police
Department for 13 years.

We had a few high-profile
cases that have occurred in

the city, but this case

is as tragic as
anything I'd ever worked.

The call was
a shooting at The Plaza.

There was very vague details.

SARA:
It didn't take much of

an investigation to realize
who was the killer.

But why?

But why?

WOMAN:
They're looking for a motive,

but they do say the two did
not know each other.

Very limited details.

We don't know the name of
the gunman, the suspect.

That was what this
investigation

was really about --
the motive.

SARA: As an officer reporting
to the scene of the crime,

you could think this is a mass
shooter, you could think

he randomly shot Christina,

maybe he was trying to shoot
somebody else

and shot her instead.

MICHAEL: Our CSIs
were already there.

Christina was shot three times,

one close-range shot to her
head, which was a fatal injury,

one close-range shot to her
head, which was a fatal injury,

and then she was shot two more
times in the chest.

You have to make sure
that you don't

get too much tunnel vision
into what's going on,

Whether the person
had help, whether

there was something else
going on here.

Until you get that statement
from Marcus Grimmie,

you gotta keep
your kinda options open.

MARCUS:
When they say it's a blur,

it really does feel like
a blur, because the next thing

I know, the cops are there,

you know,
and I'm being detained,

you know,
and I'm being detained,

because I'm the only
person there.

MICHAEL: As an investigator,

you know, I'm thinking,
again, the who

part of this, who did this,
is over.

As a human being,
as a father, I'm thinking...

this young man just
saw his sister

murdered right
in front of him.

MARCUS: Forgive me, I don't feel
like a hero for -- for that.

All I know is I did feel
really alone after it.

MICHAEL: We start seeking out
who this person is

dead on the floor,
and the medical examiner

gets there to go through his
pockets and identify him as

Kevin Loibl through
his driver's license.

There was a couple of things

about him that stood
out initially.

First of all,
he brought two guns,

and the guns were
very similar.

SARA: He used one gun to shoot
and kill Christina,

but that gun jammed.

And so when he was in that
struggle with Marcus on

the ground,
he reached for the second gun,

and he used that gun
to kill himself.

But he also had a tactical
knife strapped to his ankle.

We also found a brochure for

a burial service that would
cremate your remains.

So that tells us that Kevin
Loibl had no intention to live.

I had over one million
notifications, because people

just wanted to know what
happened to Christina.

But when you get
news like that,

I swear you can feel
the world stopped turning.

All my friends and I were just
like, "Who is this guy?"

I started going down these
rabbit trails of conspiracies,

I started going down these
rabbit trails of conspiracies,

and when I started looking
into all the things

that people were saying about
why Christina was killed,

there's something going on.

I wanted to start finding out
what was on his computer.

A lot of people want
to just figure out

what -- what do you think
the motive is?

Did you recognize him?

Does he have
a criminal history?

Did he have, you know, previous
contact with law enforcement?

No, there's no indication
that he knew her.

We're looking into that
and trying

to find a motive for
the crime.

To me, at least, she never
mentioned anybody being,

like, unhealthily obsessed with
her or anything like that.

She just always assumed
everybody was just sweet

and nice.

SARA: When investigators
looked at her content,

everything seemed to be
positive in her threads

and comments.

There didn't seem to be any
indication that there were any

creeps lurking or someone
was stalking her

or looking to come to
a concert and kill her.

We asked Marcus,
"Have you ever seen

"that guy at any of her
previous concerts?

Was he, like, showing up
at every one?"

There were some people who had
been hired, uh, as freelancers

to photograph and video
the concert, and they graciously

turned over to us
all their footage.

We were able to establish
that he had been there

We were able to establish

the whole time.

We see him
in the video footage,

uh, standing in the back of
the venue.

At that point,
my immediate

concern became for
Kevin Loibl's family

and whether or not he had done
something to them prior to this.

Kevin's family was shocked.

We were amazed
to find out that they

had never heard him mention
Christina Grimmie's

name before, uh,

they didn't even know he
was in Orlando for this show,

they didn't even know he
was in Orlando for this show,

had never seen him watch
a single episode of "The Voice,"

but there were some
interesting things that

they said.

His dad said he lived
like a hermit.

And then, you know,
we're asking

about relationships, you know,
did he have friends?

Did he have a girlfriend?
Where did he go to school?

And all those things painted
a very socially isolated person.

And when he took us
into his bedroom, he had

aluminum foil taped to
the windows

and pretty heavy drapes.

He was like, you know,
very bizarre.

There was, like, apparently
nothing hanging up in the room,

like no posters, no nothing.

Nothing having to
do anything

with Christina Grimmie
in there.

Like, you might expect to see,

like, a wall plastered with
her picture.

There was no pictures on
the wall.

There wasn't anything there
in this bedroom.

I mean, I think they obviously
knew there's something really

awkward and bizarre

about Kevin, but not to
the extent that

the extent that

he would go
and kill somebody.

MICHAEL: But one of the things
that his dad did tell us was

Kevin had gone through some
pretty radical changes over

the last few months.

So we really felt, at that
point, you know, his computer

and his phone
were gonna be crucial for us.

So we took the computer back,
we had his phone,

our digital forensic guys
looked at both of them.

The computer tower had been
deliberately destroyed.

And I could only imagine
that was to take

away our ability to find out
why this happened.

Our forensic guys
couldn't get into his phone,

either, because it had
been encrypted.

So the two places that would
have, you know, a wealth

of information and evidence
were no go for officers in

this case.

So at that point, his family
said that he only really had

one friend in the world and
that we should talk to him.

This friend, he knew

that Kevin Loibl was
obsessed with Christina,

and he identified

that this was -- maybe had been
going on for about a year.

And I asked him, "Do you know
what specifically he watched?"

And he said,
"All I know is that

"he would watch anything
having to do with her.

Anything that she produced,
he watched."

He said part of this was
these changes

that he was going through
was to impress her.

What he thought he had to do
to impress her

and that he wanted
to be a streamer.

He felt that was an avenue
to meet Christina.

I think Kevin really
secretly thought, in a very

twisted way, that Christina
Grimmie was his future bride.

he started a GoFundMe
for us.

So they were the spark

of there's still good in
the world,

when the world just seems

what we just experienced,
only they didn't have half of

the helping hands that we had,

so we started the Christina
Grimmie Foundation,

which raises money to give
directly to families

who experience gun violence.

in this hard time,
to give them a little bit

to give them a little bit

of hope, saying, "Hey,

this is gonna be really hard,
but you can get through this."

To this point,
we've helped over 100 families

and given out over $350,000
in grants.

So the response as a whole
has just been encouraging.

This isn't the end of
