I'm at war with myself
right now.

I mean, all the prospects I've
been on have been with Dave.

No, you're not gonna
screw anything up.

I could. I mean, honestly.

But you're not gonna.
You know how to pan.

As long as you pan the dirt,
you will be fine.

We're getting close
to the end of the season

and this prospect
could be our future.

But also I'm jeopardizing
with these guys here

if something breaks
and they're down.

And if I'm over there and don't
find nothing, guess what? It's on me.

He wants you to go.

We're going to be
with five people.

We'll make do.

One way or the other,
if something breaks,

I'm sure if we put our heads
together, we'll get it going.

If something breaks down here

he's far more beneficial here,

but on the same token,

him and Lance together,
if something breaks down there

he can fix it there because
Dave's not gonna be there.

This is gonna be
the biggest week of struggle

that we may have
to come up against

because it's going
to be a fight to get everything

back up and
going without Nathan.

Let her warm up

When Nathan leaves the site...

You just don't want to hit
hydraulics right away, mess things up.

It falls on rookie
miner, Andrew Stefalo,

to maintain the
$500,000 eagle.

I'm not expecting you
to be perfect. No one is.

I know the machine very good.

I got a crash course on it.

Things are gonna
go wrong this week

and there's gonna be
things I don't know.

It's a stressful situation

but there's still four more start-ups
and five more shut-downs to do

and everything
in between that.

He's done a crash course

but that doesn't make him
a mechanic overnight.

You know if something happens
we're not looking to him to fix it.

We're short-handed
and we're short a leader.

There's not
many leaders like Dave

but we'll keep it going.

Hopefully it goes
somewhat smooth, anyway.

In the gold room...

I don't understand why the
gold's not there. This is a weird deposit.

After a disappointing
25 ounces last week

from the Cottonwood cut,
Jason inspects the concentrate.

What the heck you got here?

That's a lot of iron.

And when I say iron, I
mean old iron that I'm finding.

It's not normal.

Whether you're chasing
old timers or virgin ground,

you're not gonna
get into any scrap iron

until you get to some place
that they did work.

You know, whether it was
digging, sluicing, whatever.

A lot of this is ours.

It's coming off of the bucket when I'm
scraping in on the rocks and what not.

You know, it's still shiny,
it still looks pretty fresh.

But the amount of old iron
that I'm finding

tells a story that old
timers did a little bit of work.

But the only problem is
it wasn't done by hand.

There's no way.

It was done by
a piece of equipment

and I think more than
we anticipated.

Two weeks ago...

What the hell is that?

Dave and Jason
discovered an old ground sluice

in the Cottonwood cut.

I think it was just somebody came
in here, tried to get a quick buck,

put that old piece of pipe in
here and, you know, tried it.

When we found that
ground sluice down there...

we realized we're definitely
where old timers have been.

I just don't think we realized to what
degree and how much work they actually did.

So much iron in the ground

points to
a mechanical operation.

It kind of explains the value
of these top gravels here.

We're dealing with
a tailing scenario, I think.

It would be nice to get
somebody that knows this area.

Maybe see what we can learn.

Trying to figure out what
has been hit and what hasn't.

As much as I love history, you
can't make a living off of history.

We got to have gold here too.

We got the Beetle
from the lower 48 from my buddy.

We got it picked up and now I'm
going to meet Lance at the claim.

Nathan drives seven
hours north-west of Glacier Creek

into the Alaskan wilderness to a
4000-acre property at Stevensville.

He's meeting with Dave's
business partner, Lance Baller.

I'm going to be the mechanic
slash prospector slash steerer,

and I don't like
being all that.

But we don't know exactly what
Glacier Creek's going to really do.

You know, we've been
having some ups and downs

but right now
we just don't know.

We got to keep looking
for future ground.

- Found ya.
- How ya doing, Nathan?

So, I just talked to the other
claim owner over here.

Gave us some ideas.
We'll meet him a little bit later

but we got to find the gold.

Once we find the gold, then
we'll bring the Beetle in, set it up,

and see if we can make the
same recovery on the bulk sample.

- Cool.
- So, follow me. We'll see what we can do.

So,
we're doing this without Dave.

He's given us areas
we're to do.

But we're looking
for the next big one

that could be a 30-year mine
is what we're looking for.

Last week, Dave and
Lance found signs of good gold

on these lower benches to the
north-east of the 4000-acre property.

But before Lance and Nate begin
bulk sampling with the Beetle...

This time, Dave wants them to run further
hand tests in the north of the property

on benches around the
confluence of two historic creeks,

increasing the chances
of richer alluvial gold.

And it's going to take all of Nate's
limited prospecting experience.

This ain't no rookie 10-acre
prospect. This is 4000 acres.

That's the real **** deal.

This one actually
has me stressed out

and I don't get
**** stressed out.

It takes a lot to make me
second guess myself

and right now
I'm second guessing myself.

Let's dig here.

So, this is one of the
spots Dave wanted us to check

up here on this bench.

What we're hoping is these
glaciers came down this valley

and they deposited as the
glaciers were going over the top.

So right here at the end,

the other thing is on each
of the outside of the benches.

They're small cobbles.

You know,
small little gravels.

- They're getting bigger.
- Yeah.

I'm starting to get some bigger
cobbles now but not anything significant.

Oh, yeah, check it. So I'm assuming
we'd find some bigger cobbles,

these river gravels,
but river gravels pay, so...

This looks a little different.

I mean, that's clay right
there. I mean, look at that.

- Look at it forming in my bucket.
- It's still casting.

We just hit the clay layer
down there so we pulled it up.

The bucket,
you saw the clay drop off.

So that's where gold should go
down to the clay and above right there.

Anything?

There's three pieces.

12 microns.

- Nothing big though.
- No, nothing big.

I mean, it's the first haul
on 4000 acres.

Let's go over on the bench and
we'll go see what that looks like

not a prospector.

It's a big property
to go out here and prospect.

I really want to,
but at the same time is

we got an operation back up
out east we got to take care of.

It's stressful but here I am.

We're concerned to gain some confiidence

with this machine.

Only way we'are gainers
to get fifty ounce gold

if its running in.

I shall hope we're worth
at the end of the week we'are back home.

starting on the top of the mountains,

Jason calls in
a local miner, Dave Strom,

to shine a light on the mining
history of the Cottonwood Cut.

So, I've been told you've got a
little bit of knowledge of this area.

I kept track of this trail for quite
a while ever since high school.

So from high school till now, you've
been walking these hills and mountains?

I claimed three claims
down the creek here,

down to about the depth
that we could handle mining.

Well, throughout time have you have
heard of or even noticed larger gold?

Now, well, I know that the
mine here had some nice gold.

That must be the gentleman
that was before the???

- Yeah.
- Okay.

Do you know, by any chance,
how deep they were going?

I think they had a couple of
front-end loaders in there.

I'll be damned.

That would explain
during our clean-ups

the amount of old little
chunks of iron that I'm finding

definitely says
there was equipment working.

I know that??? Averaged
40 pounds a month cleanup.

Well they didn't leave much here.

At least, not yet.

Initially, Dave panned
promising gold in the Cottonwood Cut

so he directed Jason to run
it all the way down to bedrock.

But now, Jason's discovery that
old timers used front-end loaders

to scoop up the first
four feet of gold-rich pay,

depositing a layer
of tailings in its place,

leaves the crew facing a thick
layer of previously mined ground.

I do believe that it's got to get
better somewhere down here

and, from what
that gentleman was saying,

I'm all for it.

I'm still on
that hunt for the gold.

Now, it's on Jason
to make a tough call.

Go against Dave's plan and
discard the top four feet of pay.

The way I'm looking at it,
Case, is those last two cleanups,

- they were horrible.
- Yeah.

Before, Dave wanted to run it
all but I can't keep sending that.

So if you get that dozer and take
off four feet or so of top gravels

and get it pushed off, that would
help cut off some of that dilution.

If that will bring us
some better gold.

There is gold in this but not
enough to send to the plant.

Bottom line is do the volume
and hope for the best, but...

We don't have time
to settle on low grade pay.

When Dave's gone,
you know,

he leaves me to, kind
of, make the decisions,

especially
as far as the ground.

If Dave was here right now, I think
he'd have made the same decision.

The guys, they're
worried about my health,

whether I'm gonna bounce back.

And the same with Shelly
and I, I mean the rest of this is...

It's of no consequence.
The mining, the, you know...

The company doesn't mean
anything if you don't have your health,

so, you know,

without me being there,

without the leader being
there things can go wrong.

So I hope and pray that
they can keep it together.

outside Denali National Park.

Nathan, why don't you follow
this layer? We'll find the exact spot.

After their
first test toll was a bust...

Nate and Lance head to a spot on the south
of the claim with local miner, Tod Bauer.

So, this should be the stuff
right here, right?

Yeah, this is the stuff
that hasn't been mined.

A miner
in this region for 40 years...

There's definitely gold here.

A lot of ground
that hasn't been mined.

And even, like,
some of the ground

that has been mined,
you can re-mine it

and still do good on it.

Are we gonna hit a
bedrock or what are we gonna hit?

I think we're gonna be about
15 feet before we hit the bottom.

- The way it's been looking so far.

And you just
run all this stuff?

Yeah, but the smaller
stuff on the top and the...

Finally, virgin crap though.

You know, my ambition is to
learn the gold mining from front to back.

Getting out front, these
prospects is what I really wanna do.

I wanna know
this side of the business.

And I always wanted to
prospect, but with Dave,

not by myself or Lance.

It smells like it, too.

- Yeah. When it has that, like, fishy type smell

it's usually the good stuff.

I do not like this pan.

I can't justify turning the
Beetle on for a couple of microns.

You know, I'm worried
I'll let the guys down,

but facts are we ain't
finding nothing right now.

We got an operation
back up out east.

I hope the guys can make it
happen and keep on mining,

but this week might be
a whole, total waste.

180 miles southeast...

This place
is a volume game.

But sometimes
you're getting gold and

you're not seeing any of it
in a sluice box, I don't know.

I can't make heads or tails,
it's so damn sporadic.

After removing top
gravels from the Cottonwood cut,

the five-men crew
hits full speed

as it runs the deeper layers
of pay dirt.

You're in ****
ground with **** gold

becomes a lot harder
than it should

because you're feeling
beaten up just by the ground.

So, hopefully, this gold's
a little better down here.

It'll keep the morale up.

- Hey, Chris, do you have copy?
- Yeah. Go ahead.

We have a hole
in the upper screen

because we're starting to get a little
bit bigger material in the small tailings.

Really?

I'll come down and look at it.

We may shut down
and patch her.

See, this is our problem
right here.

It's letting big rock through.

And that big rock will beat the
ever-living hell out of that three eights,

and we've already got holes
in the three eights.

We don't need to add any more. We're gonna
have to patch up the screen right here.

So let's go ahead and put a
little plate here. We'll just bolt it in.

The Eagle houses
two levels of steel screens.

Rocky pay dirt constantly beats
the top screen

and eventually punches holes
in the steel

so bigger rocks slip through and
break the weaker lower screen,

carrying some through the plant
that end up packing the sluice box,

leaving no room
for gold to settle.

With new screens seven days off
and mechanic, Nate, 180 miles away,

Jason and Andrew must
attempt to patch the holes

using any materials
they can find on the site.

Andrew's definitely doing
a good job looking at the plant.

He caught a hole in the top screen
deck, which is your bigger rock.

And the last thing you want is
that bigger rock to go through

'cause it'll beat the hell out of that
three eight screen on the bottom

and then we'll be down
two screens.

So what Andrew and I
came up with

is to just sandwich
these two pieces of iron

one on the top part
of the screen,

the other on the bottom
part of the screen.

Bolt this. Just plug
in those larger holes.

Oh, that will work.

It's a good thing we're not
getting judged on the beauty.

That's some ugly-ass cutting.

- Yeah, there we go.

- Yeah.

The problem is that you're
gonna have to hold that up.

My father, my step-father they had

claims on the other side
of the valley there.

And they are all, um...

So, the history of this place, what
actually brought people here to gold mine?

I think in the early 1900s,
Henry Peters

discovered one of these
creeks out here.

As the gold got known,
other people came in

and more women have owned my
mining claims and leases than men.

That's phenomenal.

The Klondike Gold Rush

saw a handful of pioneering
women take to the tundra.

One of the most successful
was Ethel Berry.

Known as
the Bride of the Klondike,

Ethel spent her honeymoon travelling
through the treacherous Chilkoot pass

and made a fortune by staking
and mining claims in the Klondike.

By the 1900s, she became one
of the region's first millionaires.

And by the time of her death,

she'd earned, in today's
money, over $100 million.

Now, we don't have a whole
big window

to search, we can't afford...

It's-It's massive and the history
shows us here

and you know we..
There's no GPS codes.

you've to actually
navigate the land.

As this whole... is used to be glaciers

So, you look for the glaciers...

and now you'll see lots
of gold on the ground

we should start at?

about 50 feet off the creek,

and dig a hole,
and see what we get.

Northern area of the claim,

Michelle points Nate to a spot
50 feet off the edge of the creek.

ground looks a little bit different

than the ground
we have punched holes in.

It's got a lot more
different makeup.

It's got a really reddish
material across the top

and that could be, actually,
freakin' pay dirt there.

The Eagle's not in

The top screen has a hole
but we're getting by,

and it's running,
and we're still getting gold.

We're the reason why
the screens are going out.

We can be faster, but we're
damaging our screens faster.

it's a real delicate dance. And...

You know, it takes a while
to find the rhythm.

This spot we cut
is way different than that papicut.

And it's consistent, man.

There's a lot going on right now,
lot of **** isn't working right,

there seems to be
a little something everyday.

But the one thing
is the team...

handling it like superstars.

Sluice boxes give me

That big rock that's coming
through that damn screen,

jacking up our sluice boxes.

These gon' pack up
in the sluice box

and they'll hold more,
and more, and more,

and then it redirects the water
and it makes a dead zone.

So this fills up.

Essentially, the ripples down
this side are doing nothing.

We're gonna shut down
'cause this is not gonna be good.

- I don't wanna waste the ground.

that's not a box recovering.

Now, everything close
will be recovered,

but once it splashes up and
gone, I mean, this is the particle size

that's already down here
and it hasn't even dried yet.
