in las vegas, nevada.

by the authority vested in me

it was a simple wedding

because they couldn't
afford much more.

they were happy
just being together.

both kurrie and garritt
had children

from previous marriages.

they had become
a large family

which included
five children.

kurrie's daughter,
10-month-old, ranei,

was the youngest,
but they hoped not the last...

because they loved kids.

( sirens )

but less than three weeks
after their wedding,

an ems unit received
an emergency call

from garritt anderson.

( male )
"911."

when the emergency unit
arrived at the house,

they found
a 10-month-old baby,

unconscious
and unable to breathe.

the paramedics came
and they took her...

into the ambulance,
so, i ran in there.

and her eyes were rolled back
and she didn't look like

there was any life
to her at all.

she was in there
for about 45 minutes,

and i remember
an officer telling me,

"okay, she should
scream now."

'cause they were going
to give her an iv,

and she never screamed.

and i kept
asking garritt,

"what happened
while i was gone ?"

and he said,
he didn't know,

that marcus my son,
was in the crib with her.

by the time ranei
arrived at the hospital

she was already dead.

at his home,
the stepfather,

garritt anderson
told detectives,

when x-rays were taken
of ranei at the hospital

they revealed that the baby's
skull had been fractured.

which could have
only been caused

by a severe blow
to the head.

they did not believe that
ranei's three-year-old brother

could have caused
such a severe injury.

so, the detectives decided
to see if they could find out

more about what happened
to the baby.

10-month-old ranei
had already been prepared

for burial
and embalmed,

which meant that her blood
had been replaced

with a preservative
called formalin.

after a body has been
injected with embalming fluid,

bruises beneath the skin
become more prominent,

especially when looked at
under laser light,

which is hundreds of times
more intense

than normal light.

so, a laser was used
to examine the baby's body

and when it was
focused on her feet

it revealed that there were
finger bruise marks

around the baby's ankles.

when detectives measured
these finger marks

they found that
the span of the bruises

could've only been left
by an adult hand.

and the only adult
in the room that day

was the baby's
stepfather.

the next day,
garritt anderson

was brought into the salt lake
city's sheriff's department

for questioning.

but this time
detective jim vaughn

was armed with
the laser evidence.

what happened with
you and the baby ?

what was it that was going on
that led to that ?

no, no, no, wait,
don't give me that swear shit.

did you hear

about half an hour into
the interview he gave it up.

he said he wanted a cigarette
and he wanted his mother there

and if those
two needs were met

that he would be willing
to tell us more.

eventually, he talked
and described how

he was watching
the five children,

he was upset.

little ranei was crying,
she was crying continuously,

her cries were very
bothersome to him.

and at one point,
he grabbed her and shook her

and screamed in her face as loud
as he could to "shut up".

he said after
shaking her,

she was
unusually quiet.

and then the baby came back
and was screaming even more

and when he could
take no more,

he said he grabbed her
by the legs,

and threw her
over his shoulder.

after throwing her
over his shoulder,

she landed on something
and he heard a "thud".

he says he didn't
look to see

what the "thud" was,
he didn't care what it was,

but when he did turn around
and look at her,

he said that
she was "fighting",

but what he was describing
was a seizure.

the child was going
into a seizure.

and then he said he tried
to give her a bottle

and then left her.

on september 6th, 2002,

garritt anderson plead guilty
to child abuse/homicide

and was sentenced
to 30 years in prison.

but little ranei nieman,

her life cut short

never got the chance
to celebrate her first birthday.

the banff springs hotel,

situated in the beautiful
canadian rockies,

attracts thousands of
tourists every year.

on may 17th, 1990,

at around 1:30
in the morning,

a cab driver named lucie turmel,
stopped in front of the hotel

to pick up a fare.

three people
got into her cab.

a guy and two girls.

i watched them get in.

and just never heard
nothing from her.

a half hour later he found
her cab along a country road.

i just drove up to the car
to see if she was in the car.

if she was alright
and the car was empty.

early the next morning,

the body of 24-year-old
lucie turmel

was found lying
in the street.

she had been stabbed
17 times.

the autopsy revealed that
lucie had been stabbed

a number of times
in the neck area.

her carotid artery
had been severed.

she also received
a number of defense wounds

on her hands
and arms.

this was
a frenzy killing

and certainly
it was a situation

where a robbery
escalated into murder,

but then also escalated
into a situation of overkill.

a few hours later a bloody knife
was found in the driveway

about a block
from the murder scene.

it was a distinctive knife
in that it was 11 inches long

and had a mahogany handle
and a very shiny steel blade.

but there were no markings
on the knife whatsoever

that would
indicate its origin.

the cab was taken to the garage
at police headquarters

in order to search
for forensic evidence.

when lucie's taxi
was examined,

there was a small
amount of blood present

in the interior
of the cab.

the blood did not
originate from lucie.

we began thinking
that the attacker
must have cut himself

and bled
into the taxi.

the murder of 24-year-old
lucie turmel

shocked and angered
the residents of banff.

this had been the first murder
in this peaceful community

in over 30 years.

this investigation
became very huge very quickly,

because we didn't
have a single suspect

that we were
looking for.

in fact, we had the whole
town site of banff,

probably the whole population
of western canada,

that we were
looking at.

the investigation dragged on
for a year and a half.

until a woman called police
and told them

that she'd recognized
the knife on a wanted poster.

the owner of the knife,
22-year-old ryan love,

was brought in for questioning
and admitted to detectives

that he had once
owned the knife,

but said that it had
been stolen months ago.

after several hours of
protesting his innocence,

and with the interview
nearly over,

police asked love to leave
a blood sample for dna testing.

but under canadian law,
at that time,

he had the right
to refuse and said "no."

even though the test could
help prove his innocence.

with love's refusal
to provide any blood

or other bodily substance
for dna testing.

we were going to have to obtain
that material surreptitiously.

in a motel room
outside of banff,

a sting operation
was set up

in which several
female undercover agents

invited love
to a party.

the undercover operators
and love had watched

a couple of pornographic movies
and it was hoped that

perhaps love might
be kind enough

to leave behind
a semen deposit,

but unfortunately
that was not the case.

the next night the undercover
cops tried again.

he was observed to blow his nose
into a piece of tissue paper

and throw the tissue paper
into one of the garbage cans

in the motel room.

one of the undercover operators
retrieved the kleenex

containing the mucous
from the garbage can,

sealed it
in a plastic bag

and the next morning turned it
over to me as evidence.

tests later proved that the dna
left by love on the tissue

matched the dna found
in lucie's cab.

good evening.

it's an announcement
that the people of banff

have been waiting
a long time to hear.

rcmp have made an arrest
in connection with the murder

of taxi driver
lucie turmel.

the simple act of
blowing his nose in a tissue

cost love his chance at freedom
and in june of 1994,

he was found guilty
of second-degree murder

and sentenced
to life in prison.

in october of 1988,

at a hospital
in winter haven florida,

a 42-year-old woman,
named peggy carr lay in a coma,

she was slowly dying
and no one knew why.

only one month before,

peggy had been an active,
healthy woman.

she had just gotten married
to a man named, pye carr,

and was looking forward
to life with her new husband.

but shortly after her wedding
she became deathly ill,

complaining of
sharp, burning pains

in her hands and legs.

the doctors couldn't figure out
what was wrong with her

until a neurologist
decided to test her

for heavy metal
poisoning.

those tests revealed that
she had ingested large amounts

of a highly
toxic substance

called thallium.

within weeks other members
of the carr family

also fell
seriously ill.

the last thing i remember
i was in my bedroom.

my feet were just
like they were on fire.

then the next thing i remember
i woke up a couple of days later

and i was on the second floor
of the pediatrics unit.

i was dead.

i looked
like an alien.

i lost
so much weight.

my eyes.

just bulging out.

black.

my complexion
just solid white.

detectives rushed
to the carr home

hoping to find out where
the thallium had come from.

every item from the house
was sealed and labeled.

the samples were then
boxed and shipped

to the state
forensic lab.

virtually, everything in
that house had been tested.

every ice cube,
every macaroni box,
everything.

trying to find out
where in the world

this thallium
could have come from.

several days later,
chemists at the lab,

finally came upon
item number 346a,

three empty
coca-cola bottles.

it was in these bottles
that scientists finally found

what they were
looking for.

traces of
thallium nitrate.

whoever had done this

was smart enough
to select a poison

that would be difficult
to detect in normal lab tests

and one that wouldn't
change the color

or the taste
of the soda.

on march 3rd, 1989,
at winter haven hospital,

peggy carr was removed
from life support

and died a few
hours later.

i couldn't believe that
anybody would poison my family.

i racked my brain thinking,
"why, how, what did we do ?

what did i do ?"

homicide detectives also
wanted to know the answer

to that question

and began interviewing anyone
who knew or lived near

the carr family.

they went literally
i think to every house,

and asked people,

"why do you think
this happened ?

"why do you think
the carr family,

"who would hate 'em
that much ?

who would do this
to this entire family ?"

one of the people who
was asked this question

was the carr's next door
neighbor, george trepal.

george trepal
got very dry mouthed

when they asked him
that question

to the point that his tongue
was sticking to the roof

of his mouth.

and his answer was,

"well, somebody probably
wanted them to move out."

as they left that day, they both
looked at each other and went,

"there's something
about that guy.

there's just something
about that guy."

authorities did a background
check on george trepal

and discovered that not only
was he a trained chemist,

but he had also
been arrested

for running
an methamphetamine lab

and one of the ingredients
used to make methamphetamine

is thallium nitrate.

the authorities were convinced
that this strange little man,

george trepal,

was somehow involved
in the murder

of his neighbor,
peggy carr.

but they needed proof,

physical evidence that
would stand up in court.

so, undercover agent,
susan goreck,

was assigned to befriend
george trepal

and somehow gain
access to his home.

i worked 15 months
undercover

developing a relationship
with him.

having meetings,
writing letters.

talking on the phone.

it was very obvious
when he talked about

the next door neighbors
that he disliked them

because they were not
of his intelligence.

he considered them
lower intelligence.

in december of 1989,
susan goreck learned

that the trepals'
were moving

and persuaded them
to rent her their house.

once they moved,

the fbi got a warrant
to search their property.

they found that
trepal's workshop

had been transformed into
a sophisticated chemistry lab.

not only did agents find books
and manuals about poison.

but also a diary that
contained chemical formulas

for the making
of poison.

most importantly, detectives
discovered a small brown bottle

containing traces
of thallium nitrate.

on january 7th, 1991,

george trepal
went on trial for murder.

there, jurors were
amazed to learn

that he had killed
peggy carr simply because

he felt her sons were
making too much noise.

they also learned that although
he had the iq of a genius,

he lived in
an imaginary world

where he believed himself
to be super human.

my character is george trepal,
my real name is wando the great.

often, he and his genius friends
would hold parties

where they would create
elaborate scenarios

for committing
the perfect murder.

we have two winners.

'cause one winner is nasty
and got more stuff...

unfortunately,
for the carr family,

george trepal decided to make
his game of murder a reality.

today george trepal
sits on death row,

isolated and silent,

fantasizing about
his games of death.

on january 15th, 2000,

at 2:30 in the morning

three young men were
driving their jeep

through the streets of
west valley city, utah.

at 3200 west street

they stopped
for a red light.

but they were unaware
that behind them

a two-ton ford pick up

traveling at more
than 70 miles an hour,

was about to slam
into their jeep.

the jeep was on fire
it had three occupants.

one was thrown from the jeep
and trapped under the truck.

one was trapped inside the jeep
when it caught fire

and a third passenger
in the vehicle

was pulled from the wreckage
while it was burning.

i don't remember really
anything other than

getting in the jeep
and waking up in the hospital.

the first thing
i asked my parents was

if chris and casey
were okay.

and they started to cry and at
that point i knew it was bad.

two boys, classmates
and close friends of aaron's

had been burned alive
in the accident.

they were both
only 18 years old.

probably the most shocking
aspect of this case

is that the driver of
the truck climbed over

one of the victims who was
trapped under the truck,

screaming for help,

and ignored those cries
and fled the scene.

the next day the registered
owner of the truck

was brought in
for questioning.

at his interview,
paul upwall denied

ever being at the scene
of the accident.

he explained to us
that he had gone

to a bar with a friend

and that he had a shot of
a drink called "mind eraser"

and that he had approximately
two pitchers of beer.

he couldn't tell me
what happened after

he arrived home
from the bar.

although he was
the prime suspect,

the police still
had no evidence

that paul upwall was actually
driving the truck that night.

the death of the two boys
plagued the authorities

for over a year
until someone decided

to try something
different.

we came up with the idea
of looking on the surface

of the airbag to see if
we could find trace evidence

between mr. upwall
and the airbag.

for the first time
in forensic history,

laser light would be used to
detect evidence from an airbag.

when we turned on that laser on
for the first time

there were fibers
that covered the entire surface

of that airbag.

in addition to that,

we were surprised
to see a single hair.

it was obvious that where
a hair had been removed

with a great
deal of force

because the bulb
was still intact,

which gave us the potential
to do dna examination.

the fibers that we spent so much
time pulling from that airbag

were matched by
the crime laboratory

to mr. upwall's clothing.

there was no question
that the fibers on his clothing

were imbedded in that airbag
and the only possible time

that airbag
could have come in contact

with mr. upwall

was at the moment
of impact.

it's a perfect crime scene,
it's a crime scene

that hits him
in the face.

on december 4th, 2000,
paul upwall,

after having been
convicted of manslaughter

addressed
a packed courtroom,

paul upwall received a sentence
of 20 years in prison.

but for the mothers
who had lost their children

upwall's punishment
was not enough.

he showed no remorse when
he left those three boys to die

and he hasn't shown
any remorse from day one.

how can you put
a price on their lives ?

highway 40.

a small stretch of road
connecting delaware

to new jersey.

a place where
if you had the money

you could buy
just about anything.

but for some it was
an easy place to die.

everyday hundreds of truckers
passed along highway 40

on their way
to delaware.

but it wasn't until
a cold night in november

that one of them
noticed the body

of 23-year-old
shirley ellis

lying at a nearby
construction site.

the imprints on the breast
of shirley ellis

very clearly indicated
use of some sort of tool,

there were lacerations
on the right side

of the front
of her scalp.

they were roughly
semi-circular.

they had the appearance
of a hammer blow.

the killing
instilled fear

into the women
who worked the highway,

but they hoped it was
an isolated incident.

seven months went by
without another murder,

but on june 29th, 1988,

workers arriving at
another construction site,

found the body
of catherine dimauro.

my first impression was
an instant slap in the face.

we have another one.

someone had
been abducted.

mutilated with tools.

the fact that she had been
dumped in this place

to be discovered.

this was a signal,
this was a sign.

here's my work,
i'm not hiding it.

i have just
killed somebody

and in this case
i've killed somebody brutally.

i want you to see
what i've done.

at the morgue, dr. arden
first photographed the body,

then began the difficult task of
examining it for trace evidence.

using a magnifying glass
he meticulously examined

every part
of the torso.

when he arrived at the upper
portion of her left leg,

he suddenly discovered
a small blue fiber.

on her arm
he found another one.

by the end
of his search

he had collected
13 blue fibers in all.

small, but
important clues.

after weeks
of investigation,

detectives finally found out
that the blue fibers

had come from a carpet store
in new jersey.

the fibers came from
a rarely used carpet

found only
in trucks and vans.

by september,
the killings resumed.

two more women
had disappeared.

the police searched
for their bodies.

but by the time
they found one of them,

margaret lynn finner.

all that remained of
her body was a skeleton.

four women were dead
and the only thing

police had were
13 blue fibers.

desperate, they decided
to try a new strategy.

a 21-year-old rookie police
officer named renee lano,

volunteered to pose
as a prostitute,

hoping to lure the killer,
by using herself as a decoy.

wearing a hidden microphone
and packing a gun

she walked highway 40,

putting her life on the line,
night after night.

we did not know if these victims
were getting into a van,

a truck, a car,
a motorcycle.

we had no idea
at that point

what we were
looking for.

one night in september,

officer lano was working
a shopping center,

when she noticed
she was being followed.

this guy in this blue van
has been by me,

you know, five, six,
seven times.

that had to be the worst moment
of that whole evening actually,

because i knew then,
i'm in a dark area,

this guy is back.

what does he want ?

so, he backs his van up

and we start talking.

i asked him to turn
the light on in the van.

and when he turns the van's
interior light on

i see just
blue carpet everywhere.

my heart was in my throat
at this point.

so, i asked him
pretty much,

"why are you here,
what do you want,
do you want oral sex ?"

so, while i'm
speaking to him,

i was stroking
the carpet of the van

as though it were
a sexual turn on.

and while
i'm stroking the carpet,

i had plucked
some fibers.

while the fibers
were being examined

at the fbi
forensic lab.

the body of a fifth victim,
michelle gordon was found

washed ashore on the banks
of the chesapeake canal.

unlike the other victims
she had not been strangled.

after being tortured.

her heart had stopped.

she had literally been
frightened to death.

only one day
after her murder,

the fbi confirmed that
the fibers officer lano

had taken from the van,

matched those found on the body
of catherine dimauro.

the owner of the van was
a 31-year-old electrician

by the name
of stephen pennell.

married with
two children,

he and his family lived
in a trailer camp

less than a mile
from highway 40.

when police searched his van,
they found overwhelming evidence

to indict him
for murder.

on the floor of the van
was the blue carpet

whose fibers matched those found
on the body of cathy dimauro.

in the sink,
police found strands of hair

belonging
to michelle gordon.

we believe what happened
was that it was severed

during the hammer blows.

because michelle gordon
had very long pretty hair

and it had
actually just been cut

as though it were
severed with some object.

on the floor was blood that
matched two of his victims.

but the evidence that cracked
the case was the blue fibers.

the fibers were just so rare
and to find that rare

a carpeting
in stephen pennell's van

that matched so exactly
all of those fibers

found all over
cathy dimauro's body

was probably
the strongest evidence.

stephen pennell was found guilty
of murder in the first degree.

in the aggravating
circumstances of

causing the death
of two persons...

at his sentencing,

pennell said he had caused
his family enough anguish

and asked for
the death penalty.

here was a man standing before
them asking to be executed

a very articulate,
intelligent man

talking in the third person
about himself.

he would say
things such as,

"the man who did this
deserves to die.

and the man who did this
should be executed."

and he was talking
about himself.

i was horrified
by the fact

that he just seemed
to have no human feelings

and absolutely
could've cared less

about these murders.

in 1992, on a cold
winter morning in march,

officer lano watched as pennell
was strapped to a table

and put to death
by lethal injection.

he had no words to say.

he never apologized
to the victims,

to the victim's
families.

he went to his grave...

a coward.

recently i received
an email,

at the hbo
autopsy website

from a woman named
donna martino.

she said that
on december 30th of 2001,

she had gone to visit
her parents in new york.

i knocked on the door,
the door was open.

and i just held the doorknob
and went in and said,

mom, dad !"

and on the kitchen floor
lie my mother and father.

my mom on her back and my father
face down side by side.

it looked like my mother had
just blue eye make-up all over,

from her neck up,
all on her face.

and my dad was face down
in a puddle of blood.

the kitchen table
was down on its side,

one of the legs were off.

stuff that was on
like a dishwasher

was not in its place

and on to the floor
and off to the side.

there were two knives recovered
under my father's body,

but there was also
a third knife missing.

they were
never tested.

they stated that there
was too much blood on them

to get proper
fingerprinting.

donna went on to write that the
medical examiner had explained

that her mother
had died of a heart attack

and her father
was so distraught

that he immediately
took his own life.

when i looked
at the autopsy report

the cause of death
of donna's mother

was listed as

artherosclortic
cardiovascular disease,

which means hardening
of the arteries.

however,
the autopsy report states

there was only a 50% narrowing
of the heart's main artery

which is usually
not enough to cause death.

and when i examined
the microscopic slides,

they showed the heart muscle
to be normal.

further,
the autopsy showed

there was a fracture
of the left horn

of the thyroid cartilage,
up here, or adam's apple.

and there was hemorrhage
in the nearby neck muscles.

this usually
is indicative of

homicidal manual
strangulation.

further, small petichial
hemorrhages were present

in both eyes,

which were another indication
of neck compression.

i explained to donna
that her concerns were correct

that her mother did not die
of a natural heart attack,

but was murdered
by strangulation.

and that her father died
of multiple cut wounds,

which could have been
either suicide or homicide.

based on my re-evaluation
of the circumstances,

of the crime scene
and of the autopsy findings,

the district
attorney's office

is now reinvestigating
both deaths.
