[Coach Prime] Yes. I mean I'm elated, but
we still…

The guys still weren't satisfied.
If you could believe it or not.

They, they were not satisfied.

When we landed on the plane,
several guys came to me like,

"Coach, I'm gonna make that up."

"I'm gonna do this. I'm gonna do that."

And I love that because they know
there's another level that we can attain.

Coach Sanders, how has the last week been?
And especially the last two days…

getting through this water crisis,
and have you guys moved back onto campus?

Are you guys still… ?

[Coach Prime] Well, we're not through
a water crisis because, um,

there are people still
devastated about the water.

[reporter] Is it kind of a blessing
disguise to be on the road

these first couple weeks
with everything going on?

No! It ain't a blessing to be on the road.
I wish we could play right here.

That's what I…
that's what our fans want, man.

They wanna know it's gonna be all right.

And it seems like when we are
playing and when we're rolling

and doing what we are
blessed and capable to do,

it just instills hope in everyone.

players and I

will personally be delivering
water to the people

who have reached out to
us that certainly need it.

Like nursing homes and
neighborhoods throughout Jackson.

It is very unfortunate for
the city to go through this.

And I just want the city
to be comfortable, like

We got our city's back, just
like how they got our back.

[Coach Prime] We're not doing the act to
be seen.

So it feels amazing to know
that not only does our school

try to take care of our school
matters, our football team,

but we're letting people know
that we're here for the community.

showing positive role
models for other young men.

So this is much bigger than football.

We are Jackson State University and the

has really brought us
together as a community.

home game is so important.

Not just for us but for everyone.

I grew up going to
Jackson State games, man.

Near and dear to my heart, for sure.

definitely be a relief for,

you know, the city of Jackson, right?
Considering all of the things

that we've been going through.

[Lewis] It's been a long month
getting to this point.

So it's gonna be electric on Saturday.

It's going to be very emotional.

This university is interwoven
with the city and vice versa.

As Jackson State University
goes, Jackson, Mississippi goes.

[fan] I know people been come here every
day. Coming on one of they lunch break

and stay two or three hours still.
Then get to come right back.

I need to hit four tickets.
Two adults and two children.

It is kind of bad.
Everybody got to boil water.

You know, everybody's coming together and
football helps. [chuckling]

when I started coming here.

And I look around and
everybody's standing around,

and 60,000 in there, hey…
This school mean Jackson.

Nobody's for public
Jackson but Jackson State.

Prime Time bringing it back. I hope he'll
be here for about 20 more years.

That's what we do.

But the priority is getting our kids to
the next level however we can.

to raise men and get these young men

to the next level of the

Bolden has no idea of the
potential that he has.

[Coach Prime] Four is a freak of an
athlete that just has to be consistent.

He's good. Nugget could play. He good.

He wants it, it just has
to be taught more and more.

Nugget is a different
story 'cause, you know,

Nugget started playing football
around like his 11th, 12th grade year.

Then he went to JUCO and became the
number one JUCO cornerback.

Just off pure talent. He didn't really
know too much about football.

He was, potential for him…

it's through the roof
and he's another 4.3 guy.

like a personal manager. Like, Sam's the
dude man. And he knows me…

right before my eyes.

[Sam] This came from me at a very
pivotal point in my life.

You know, um, I had lost both my parents

probably like two and a
half, three years beforehand.

And I was just in a direction where, like
I had no clue what was going on.

So like, me being down here and kind of
getting that sense of direction…

like, I'm super grateful for
that. And that experience.

You know, it's tough
not to kind of catch on

and he's preaching all this stuff to the
kids and I started taking down notes

and started applying it to my life.

Aw man, Coach. Come on!
I've been trying to hide that.

[laughing]

[Sam] It's been nothing but love
for me down here. Honestly, I…

it's, they treat me like
family everywhere I go.

Like, you know, it is been truly amazing
for me. It really has been.

be able to play at home.

We traveled two straight weeks to two
classics, which we don't understand how

you start off like that
in a season. [chuckles]

So thank God, we're at home.

[Walker] Do you have anybody that's
gonna play for you this week

that we haven't seen yet?

Yes.

Unless they do something
stupid within this next day.

So what you saw was probably
a 60 percent Travis,

but he wasn't even able to play both ways.
So the next time you see him,

I want him to be who you expect him to be.

It was just hard telling him, "No"

that first game because
you know, he wanted it bad.

So that was tough and I, and I just placed
myself in that position and I know…

knew if Coach Bowden would've brought me
in up under the same circumstance,

that I would've pleaded with him to allow
me to play. And most likely, he would've.

[Walker] How far out do you think he is?

I can't say. He's, he's doing well.

[Leanna] When I say that, then fish pop

[Coach Prime] Travis has been grinding his
way through rehab all season.

Now that takes it toll on you.

Not just physical. But
mental, as well as emotional.

[Travis] There's definitely something
right here. It's grass.

I'm about to change to my cheating lure.

- [Leanna] No!
- [Travis chuckling]

[Coach Prime] This is a young man, the
best player in the country,

and he has an injury that
occurred in high school

that he fought through but
then, it got so painful

that he had to do something about it.

You like that better,
don't you? [chuckles]

- [Leanna] Yeah.
- [Travis] Just bounce it on the bottom.

Yeah, I was in the hospital for five days.

That was the longest five
to six days of my life.

I was in there like,
"Oh my God, can they please let me out!"

'Cause I'm always up and then running.
I'm always wanting to do something.

I got football practice
90 percent of the week.

You know, when I'm not
having football practice,

I'm fishing the other 10 percent.

If I have something else to do,
other than football? It'd be fishing.

It's mind relieving.

I ain't catching nothing
but trees and leaves!

[Leanna] But I'm convinced there's no
fish.

Me too! I didn't even get a bite.

[Leanna] I fished before I met him, but
like dating him, I fish a lot more.

But he could be out here for hours
and after like, two hours, I'm done.

This is so just dark, I…

My girlfriend, she turned into a doctor.

She's seen everything I
went through. Everything.

When I first started
walking, she was happy.

Then I got sat back down again,
had to start walking again.

She got back happy and I
got sat back down again.

[Leanna] So maybe we're just in the wrong
spot.

[Travis] It's definitely that.

[Leanna] Travis is my best friend,
like literally my best friend.

Everyone sees like a hard body of him and…

but to me he's very soft and
gentle, and he's like my peace.

I always say that. He's
literally my peace.

[Travis] I told you, boy! I'm always gonna
catch me one, you hear me? [laughs]

[Travis] That's why you gotta say,

Yeah anyways, it's one
of them, like I said.

[Travis] I'm the man, champ. You wanna

[Coach Prime] When he comes back, I want
you to see the offensive guy,

the defensive guy, and the play maker.

Normally, if he didn't
play, you weren't gonna win

but we're winning, so that's tough on him.

But he has to understand,
we're great with you.

We're not just good. We're
great when you're out here.

[hip hop music]

[Travis] Every time I put this
bait on, I get a fish.

[Leanna] Ah, whatever.

[Travis] It's okay buddy. You
just suck, that's all.

[Leanna] You caught one baby, point
two-pound fish.

a different mode, now.

That means they stay out there
and get everything ready.

For most division one football programs,

you have three to five licensed
certified athletic trainers.

No… turf tape.

- [woman] No turf tape.
- [woman] No turf tape.

- We're playing on grass.
- [man] On grass.

And then you have five to six GAs
and then you have students…

they just donate their time.

Running low on supplies. [laughs] Um…

But if it's white socks, you know the tape
has to match the socks? Yes. So, white.

Here, we don't have anything.
So it's me responsible for 122 lives,

like on the, at one time…
that is all playing football on the field.

Like, it's incredible
when you think about it.

We know it game day, and you guys are
calling us, it's probably about something.

Yes sir.

And all the coaches joke with me
that I'm like the grim reaper around here.

'Cause I gotta go in
the offices and be like,

"Well, okay look, he's not
ready to go this week."

Or "Hey, he's gonna be
out for a couple games."

But it's those moments
that you're like okay,

he's returning to sport, he's coming back
out there. That is your reward.

That's why you do what you do.

Right there still, Coach?

[Coach Prime groaning]

[Askevold] What he went through last
fall with the first surgery,

it was a blessing 'cause it
ended up really saving his life.

I wish everyone handled injuries like him.

That was the most positive I've ever seen
anybody go through anything.

Especially what he
endured, like, was crazy.

[groaning]

[Coach Prime] I had three toe surgeries
during my playing career,

but the pain wouldn't
subside and they said,

"Well, your foot has been dislocated for
like, 20 years now."

I'm like, "That's strange."

[Askevold] What was this surgery, Coach?

[Coach Prime] I have no idea.

So we had a surgery
and shortly thereafter,

the pain still was there,
and, uh, went to the hospital.

That's when I seen that look
that you don't wanna see

on doctors' faces and knew
something was severely wrong.

I said, "Just shoot it to me straight."
"Let's go. What's up?"

"Well this, this, this is up."

"And you may lose your leg,
you know from knee down,

because you have no
blood going to your foot."

[Deion Jr.] No one really knew the
severity of it

'cause he was coaching one day and the
next day, he was in the hospital.

Then they said his leg might
get amputated and stuff.

I'm just like, "Bro,
what's going on right now?"

[Coach Prime] I said, "Cool, whatever you
gotta do, do.

Long as I'm alive, I'm good.
As long as I'm good, I'm good."

- [producer] You said, cool?
- Yeah. I trust God with everything I got.

God got me. God got me.

So if I had to lose something,
there's gonna be a tremendous gain.

Because there has not been
anything under the sun

that has been accelerated or
marvelous, or extraordinary

without there being a sacrifice.

I probably didn't eat for three
weeks. I lost 35, 40 pounds.

I was very small, very frail.

[Hart] When I went to the hospital,
it looked like his spirit,

like, everything was leaving
him. You know what I mean?

Like the person that we knew was…
wasn't gonna be that person anymore.

How do you come back from that?

[emotional music throughout]

Seeing him like that it wasn't a good,
it wasn't a good feeling. Wasn't.

[Reilly] This is the greatest athlete
that's ever lived, arguably.

And he's cut down, literally,

as he's trying to do all these things.

[sighs] You know, for…
he doesn't need to do this shit.

So I just, the whole
thing, man, is just awful.

[Coach Prime] Who in this thing that we
call, living,

is not in pain? In some form or fashion.
Whether it's the pain of yesterday,

the pain of your childhood,
the pain of someone that has been lost,

the pain of addiction, it's
gonna be some type of pain.

I'm no different. Not at all.

[Hart] He was very vulnerable with it

and showed us what it looks
like to be that strong of a man

and go through something like that.
And then get on the other side of it,
