All language subtitles for 3. Shooting in Ambient Light

So, I'm going do a photo of my camera woman,

Eiza González.

Eiza González.

She's going to be here.

The sun is up here.

Show them where the sun is.

There.

So, what it means is when I shoot here,

there's this beautiful, shaping light,

that comes down this side.

Oh, I hope I can look as good as you do right now.

You won't, you'll try.

I'll try.
So, you'll be like this.

I did this shoot with Eiza González, in Venice,

during the film festival and took these pictures

in the amazing swimming pool at the Cipriani hotel.

The sun was behind her and you can sort of,

see how it's either, there was a sort of,

a dusting of cloud,

but you get this sort of, lovely backlight,

where her skin looks absolutely fabulous.

I also did a lot of pictures underwater,

just shooting with the new iPhone,

which does take amazing, underwater photos.

Hold your breath, push forward and then turn.

So, it's like this.

Oh my God, he's a professional.

Do you see what I mean?
Yeah.

Brilliant.

That's quite cool.

In a situation like this,

I'm positioning her head in relation to the sun.

So the sun was up here,

so I needed to head lying down,

so that, that sun would become the key light

and give the sort of, chin light you want, under her chin.

So, if you can't move the light,

you have to move your subject.

(Eiza laughs)

So, there's this point,

where she gets some water stuck in her ear.

And by sort of, flicking her head around,

I realized what a cool picture it'd be

if she flipped her hair.

So, that's how we got this shot.

Basically, in most of these shoots,

I'm just flying by the seat of my pants,

making very, very quick decisions, calculations,

working out how far I can push something,

what I can get in the shortest time possible.

With all of these shoots,

one of the most important things to do

is get the picture and then get out of there.

It's a huge advantage to be fast in situations like this.

And it gets you invited back every time.
