So here's the definition of lateral leadership getting things done when you are not the boss.

Have you always assumed that to be a leader, you need to also be the boss or the top man or woman on

the ladder?

I see that's not the case at all.

In fact, more of us end up in roles that require strong, superstrong lateral leadership skills than

in typical leader boss roles.

So when is lateral leadership used?

This may be required or appropriate when cross-functional teams are involved or when project team management

is required.

In these situations, although there was usually a project manager or team lead, this person may not

be an official manager in their daily role.

He or she may be a clerk or a professional who's been assigned to lead the project.

There may even be people on the team who have the formal job title of manager.

But on this particular project, they're not the leader.

These situations can be challenging for someone who's not used to taking a leadership role.

It can also be challenging for a manager to step back and become a follower of the person leading the

project.
