At this point, I think it's important to make some distinctions between leadership and management.

People often use these two words as if they mean the same thing.

And while it's true that someone can be both a manager and a leader, they are not the same thing.

And we're going to go through what makes them different and separate leadership is having and using

the skill of getting others to willingly do what you want them to do.

This is called discretionary performance.

So you're convincing, persuading, influencing management is deciding what to do and then getting it

done through the effective use of resources, which may or may not be other people.

But when it is through other people, this is called mandatory performance.

Here you're telling, directing, insisting leaders focus on people and what impacts them.

So, for example, leaders focus on vision, strategy, emotion, change and improvement, and they

have a long term focus.

Meanwhile, managers focus on things such as setting goals, tasks and tactics, order and consistency,

measuring and monitoring.
