boils down to sex and greed.

-It's rare you see interviews
with the royal family

in any circumstance, let alone
on something like this.

-At the heart of the story
is this bizarre,

dysfunctional triangle
between three people.

-Prince Andrew
answering questions

for the first time
about his friendship

with convicted sex offender
Jeffrey Epstein.

-For many years, Prince Andrew
tried to avoid this story.

But, ultimately,
the photograph did him in.

-She provided a photo
of the two of you together.

-Yes.
-You've seen the photo.

-I've seen the photograph.
-How do you explain that?

-I can't.

I have absolutely no memory

of that photograph
ever being taken.

-Virginia Giuffre alleges that
she was trafficked to have sex

with Prince Andrew.

-Trafficked by the Prince's
friend -- Jeffrey Epstein.

-A very young girl
had allegedly been abused

by the Queen's second son.

-That was utterly shocking.

-The reaction
was absolute horror.

-How could someone like
Prince Andrew

have gotten into
such horrible behavior?

-It was a lifetime
in the making.

-Andrew was treated
like a little king.

He was very spoiled.

-Prince Charles was the heir --

Prince Andrew
was simply the spare.

-But Andrew had the edge
over Charles

because he was
the Queen's favorite.

That's given him
a lot of leverage.

-The problem is
the man's an idiot.

-Don't squeeze my fingers.
Ow!

-He doesn't drink
and he's never taken drugs.

But from people I talk to,

I think you could call him
a sex addict.

-He couldn't keep
his trousers closed.

-Are you gonna resign,
Prince Andrew?

Are you an embarrassment, sir?

-Prince Andrew's world
is dirty money,

dirty laundry,

and dodgy people.

-Is there any way you could have
had sex with that young woman

or any young woman
trafficked by Jeffrey Epstein

in any of his residences?

-No.

-It was the start
of December 2010,

when I got a telephone call
from one of the newspapers

I worked for,
the News of the World, saying,

"We think Prince Andrew
is in New York.

We don't know where,
and we don't know why.

Could you try and find him?"

I'd been working
as a freelance journalist

in New York from 1995, and...

the thrill of a good story
or, you know, a world exclusive

never goes away.

So, I canceled my plans and
called a photographer to join me

and went off to try
and find Prince Andrew.

At that point, I would
never have realized

what a scoop
I was about to uncover.

I started looking into
his official places,

like the New York
Consulate General of Britain.

If he was working,
he'd always stay there.

He wasn't staying with
the consul general.

Ah, okay.

And I thought, well,

the next place to look
would be to Ghislaine Maxwell.

His very good friend.
I thought, you know,

she's got a beautiful townhouse
on the Upper East Side.

So I tootled over
to Ghislaine's house.

Eventually a town car arrived,
and she got into the car.

So, we followed her.

First to Tribeca,
where she went into a bar,

and then she went
to a restaurant

in the Meatpacking District.

But no Prince Andrew.

It was very clear
by 10 o'clock at night

he wasn't going to turn up.

So, I went back home,
you know, defrosted,

and sat there thinking,
"Where else could he have gone?"

And I suddenly thought,
"Oh, Jeffrey Epstein."

He was Ghislaine's ex-boyfriend,

but also a convicted
sex offender.

-A judge sentenced
the billionaire

to 18 months behind bars

for paying underage girls
for sex,

but his release comes early.

-It seemed very unlikely

he would want to stay
with someone like that,

but at that point
I had nowhere else to look.

So, on the following morning,
8:00 a.m.,

I went to Jeffrey
Epstein's house.

It's the biggest private
residence in New York.

And I suddenly saw
lots of activity,

men in suits talking
literally into their cufflinks.

And there was clearly somebody
in Jeffrey Epstein's house

who was important,

and it could only
have been Prince Andrew.

-I could not believe it,
'cause I was sitting at my desk

and I get this phone call

from the movie publicist,
Peggy Siegal.

And she says, "Tina, Tina,
I want you to come

to a fabulous dinner tonight.

Jeffrey Epstein is hosting
a dinner for Prince Andrew,

and Woody Allen
is gonna be there,

and Charlie Rose
is gonna be there,

and we just think it would be
wonderful if you could come."

Peggy then went on to explain

this was all about
"The King's Speech,"

the movie that she
was helping to publicize.

-It's the story
of King George VI

and it's already
getting Oscar buzz.

-She said this is
why they wanted

to do this dinner for Andrew,

which seemed like
a pretty lame excuse,

as far as I was concerned,
because clearly it was

another transactional
Jeffrey Epstein dinner.

The deal was Andrew
would enhance Epstein's karma

and his Rolodex.

And I just was gobsmacked,
because in The Daily Beast,

I had already run six exposés
about Jeffrey Epstein.

She must have surely
seen these stories,

and I said to her, you know,
"Peggy, what is this?

The effing predator's ball?

I don't want to go to dinner
with a pedophile."

-Anyway, back in front
of Jeffrey Epstein's,

the door was opening
and closing quite a lot.

We were all watching pretty
young girls going in and out.

I've now spent three days
trying to find Andrew.

Finally, out came
Jeffrey Epstein

and Prince Andrew.

And it was like,
"Oh, my God."

Jay, the photographer,
leapt out and followed them.

And they walked straight
to Central Park.

Jay got ahead of them,
he stood on a rock,

and he looked down,
and there in the frame

was Andrew and Jeffrey Epstein
in deep conversation.

Jeffrey Epstein pleaded guilty
to sex offenses.

He was a horrific abuser
of very young girls,

and the second son of the Queen
is staying with him

and has gone out
openly with him.

Why would he be seen
with Jeffrey Epstein?

What is Andrew doing?

-So, let's start
at the beginning.

-Looking at you.
-Alright. Oof. Sorry.

-What is it
about the royal world

that keeps you fascinated?

-Well, you have the institution
of monarchy, but you also have

a family with all the flaws
of any other family.

-And how do you feel
about the Andrew story?

-Phew. How long have you got?

Andrew has always had
this sort of holier-than-thou,

"I'm greater than
everybody else,

the Queen is my mum" attitude.

-Living at Buckingham Palace

and having hundreds of staff
and everything done for you.

Of course, he's gonna have
some kind of arrogance to that.

I mean, that's
completely normal.

Like, wouldn't anybody?

-When you are the queen's son,
no one ever tells you the truth.

So, he really grew up with
a completely inflated

sense of his own self worth.

-It's acquired situational
narcissism.

And it means you may not have
been born a flaming narcissist,

but you become one.

And I think that's what
happened to Prince Andrew.

-But then you have to
ask yourself,

"Well, why wasn't
Prince Edward like that,

or Prince Charles
or Princess Anne?

Why Andrew?"

And I suppose there's always
one runt of the litter,

and Andrew was it.

-Any 5-month-old baby

with all this baggage
travels in royal style,

and that's exactly the case with
Britain's little Prince Andrew.

-Prince Andrew was born in 1960

and he was just treasured.

He was the beginning of what
the Queen and Prince Philip

called their second family.

The Queen's first child,
Prince Charles, was born in 1948

and then Princess Anne
came along in 1950.

And then, suddenly,
the Queen's father died in 1952,

and young Princess Elizabeth
was propelled into this job

that she really didn't think
was gonna happen to her

for another 10 years.

-I here present unto you
Queen Elizabeth,

your undoubted Queen.

For the next decade,
she was so busy being Queen

that she really,
really had a difficult time

spending much of that period
with her children.

She saw them briefly
in the morning

and briefly in the evening,
and otherwise,

they were really left
in the care of nannies.

But when Andrew was born,
she was determined

to see more of this little boy

than she had
her other two children.

So, she would pencil in
when she was gonna see Andrew.

And he would play under
her desk when she was working.

During their spare time, the car
builders at Newport Pagnell

have been busy
on a very special project --

a scaled-down version
of the James Bond car

for young Prince Andrew.

-Andrew was treated, you know,
like a little king.

He was very spoiled.

But Prince Charles could not
have been more different.

-Gordonstoun is where
Prince Charles will be

in the next summer term,

and be treated the same
as all the other 400 boys.

-My husband was at Gordonstoun
with Prince Charles.

Charles was very much a loner,

and the boys there
picked on him.

Gordonstoun was all about
teaching somebody to sail,

to swim, to climb mountains,

but Charles was rather clumsy
and didn't fit in there.

But Andrew fit in
perfectly there.

-He particularly enjoyed
the emphasis there

on outdoor sports.

-Prince Andrew was
one of the lads.

He was very mischievous,
and of course,

Prince Philip loved this boy,

who was everything that perhaps
Charles hadn't been.

So he had even more attention
lavished on him.

Being second in line to
the throne was very important,

because Prince Charles
was the heir

and Andrew was the backup.

And, you know, he enjoyed
his mini kingship

for many years before
the fact dawned on him

that actually
he was just number two.

-My Lords and members
of the House of Commons,

-It's obvious that
Prince Charles

has always had a future
as the future king.

So, you have an older brother
who's got a job

and everybody is, you know,
lining up for him.

But Prince Andrew's just
kind of sitting there.

-Andrew's life was to be
one of descending importance,

because the heir had a son,
William, who then gave birth

to three children,
and down, down, down, he went.

And that has been his life,
all his life.

-So, we had this very needy
Prince Andrew,

who was looking
to feel important,

and then we had the enabler.

-In some ways, there was
something really inevitable

about the downfall of Andrew,

as soon as he came into
the orbit of Jeffrey Epstein.

I mean, that was the path
of no return for Andrew.

-Your friendship
with Jeffrey Epstein.
-Mm.

-How did you
first become friends?

How did you meet?

-Well, I met through his
girlfriend back in 1999, who...

And I'd known her since she was
at university in the UK.

-You said you weren't
very good friends,

but would you describe him
as a good friend?

Did you trust him?

-Yes, I think I probably did,
but again, um...

I mean...

I don't go into a friendship
looking for the wrong thing.

-At the heart of the story
is this bizarre,

dysfunctional triangle
between three people.

Epstein had the money
but no social skills,

Prince Andrew had the status
that opened any door,

and Ghislaine was the glue.

-Ghislaine is really known
in Britain

as the daughter of
media magnate Robert Maxwell.

-When I first came to the UK
from New York, I met Ghislaine,

and she and I
immediately clicked

because we were both outsiders.

She was part of a smart group
of people

who were so different
than those in the royal circles.

But she was adopted
very quickly,

as, you know, children
of billionaires tend to be.

-She was very bright,
everybody says very good fun.

And at some point,
she met Prince Andrew.

He was rich, he was entitled,
and Ghislaine was very similar.

And so they were
a firm friendship.

-Prince Andrew was dazzled
by Ghislaine.

You know, here's this
wispy, smart, rich woman.

Plus, she was fun...

and highly sexed.

-I started to investigate
Ghislaine

and looking into if she was
going out with Prince Andrew.

He obviously trusted her,
and Ghislaine quickly became

a regular visitor
to Buckingham Palace.

-I was a police officer
with the Metropolitan Police,

and I was based with
the Royal Protection Command

for six years.

My main role was to provide
'round-the-clock

armed protection for the Queen,
Prince Philip,

and Prince Andrew
whilst in residence.

If you look at the front
of the palace,

you'll see the policemen
always on the gate.

That's where guests to see
royal family would go to.

But whenever Ghislaine
would enter the palace,

the routine was
we used to wave her through --

no ID, no nothing.

Straight into the quad to Prince
Andrew's private apartments.

She would come in and out
as often as she wanted.

And she was in and out
all the time.

-Which is an incredible breach
of security.

At one point,
she took in Kevin Spacey,

and the two of them
sat on thrones

and had their pictures taken.

-No one else had that access,

apart from members
of the royal family.

Myself and my colleagues
were under the perception

that Prince Andrew
and Ghislaine Maxwell

were in an intimate
relationship.

If the Queen knew
Robert Maxwell's daughter

was being entertained
by Prince Andrew in the palace,

she definitely
wouldn't like that,

or so we -- so we thought.

-I think Prince Andrew felt
Ghislaine's pain and humiliation

probably closer
than most people,

because it all fell apart
for her,

and very very publicly.

-Robert Maxwell
is missing at sea,

feared lost overboard
from his motor yacht.

-Ghislaine had to deal
with her father's death.

But there was a lot more.

-Police are investigating
reports

that Maxwell took
almost $2 billion

from his public companies
in the weeks before

he plunged to his death
from his yacht.

-The headlines were
"Maxwell is a crook."

And so overnight,
Ghislaine went from being

on everybody's, you know,
top invitation list

to suddenly just everyone
blanking her.

For Ghislaine, there was only
one way out of this,

and that was crossing
the ocean to New York.

-She was, like, rehabilitating
herself in New York

after the disgrace
of her father in Britain.

As long ago as 2000,
I had a tip

that Prince Andrew was having
lunch with Ghislaine Maxwell.

Ghislaine
had taken him to a place

called Nello's
on the Upper East Side,

which was the one and only
celebrity restaurant

that had paparazzi photographers
sitting outside.

Ghislaine clearly wanted
to be seen with Andrew.

It gave her street cred.

Andrew started going to New York
on a more regular basis,

and Ghislaine was always
his touch point.

-When he was with Ghislaine
in Manhattan,

he felt he was
the center of attention.

-Ghislaine would invite him
to these amazing parties,

like Heidi Klum's
Halloween party.

-And I don't think Prince Andrew
had ever met people like this

in his royal world.

They just had a blast.

And there was genuine
affection between them.

-As I started to investigate
Ghislaine in New York,

the name Jeffrey Epstein
kept popping up.

Everything went back
to Jeffrey Epstein,

who was this mysterious
sort of Jay Gatsby character.

-Epstein's reputation
in New York was basically,

"Who's Epstein?"

You know, my husband
is a banker.

When I would talk to bankers,
no one had heard of him.

-Ghislaine's role for Epstein

was to be the bridge
to this big-time social world.

And as far as Ghislaine
was concerned,

one of her biggest kind of
big, white whales

that she landed for Epstein
was Andrew.

-Jeffrey Epstein became known

as a collector of important
influential people,

the crème de la crème.

At the top of that list
was Prince Andrew.

-Americans go crazy for a title

'cause they still don't
really understand it.

It's something that they don't
have, so they want it.

And you got, you know,
the prince of England --

they go crazy for that.

-That relationship was
very valuable for Epstein.

But it wasn't so much
about money.

The royal connection
was really about status.

-It's quite astonishing
when you see how many places

Jeffrey Epstein got into,
courtesy of Prince Andrew.

-He got to go to the Queen's
private home,

Sandringham,
to go shooting.

He went with Ghislaine
and Prince Andrew to Balmoral.

He went to a ball
at Windsor Castle.

I mean, these were
prime invitations.

That definitely upped his ante
and his social profile,

so he got a lot out of it.

-Prince Andrew was not,
you know, naive either.

He said, you know, "This
is the guy that's gonna
make it happen for me.

He found the people that
he thought he should be with,

that were gonna change
his life, and that loved him.

-When he was with Epstein,

he felt he was
the center of attention.

He felt that he was part
of the big time, at last,

which he never felt
when he was in England.

it's sad when you see
the pathetic figure

that we see today.

There was a moment
of promise with him.

-Argentina today invaded
and seized the Falkland Islands,

which had been under British
rule for nearly 150 years.

-Have you a thought about
the Falkland Islanders?

-Ah, there's my helicopter
flying over at the moment.

I think its almost time
I should go.

-There is a long tradition
of princes

putting themselves in
harm's way on the battlefield.

Most recently, of course,
Prince Andrew,

flying highly dangerous
helicopter missions.

-Prince Andrew was age 21
when he joined my squadron.

The fact he was a member
of the royal family

really cut no ice whatsoever.

He was there as a pilot.

The role of the squadron
was to protect our ships

from missile and aircraft attack
as well as submarine attack.

It was a high-risk thing
for him to have to do,

and he rose to the occasion.

-I've been shocked at the way
that the ships were taken out.

It is a really nasty,
burning wreck.

I mean, it was quite horrific.

-At that point,
he's now "action" Prince Andy.

He's under fire.

He's genuinely out there
fighting in the Falklands.

-He certainly acquitted
himself very, very well.

His best moments
were in the navy,

because there,
he had some structure

and he had some purpose,
and he wasn't a bad officer.

-Our family is used to service,

so there wasn't that much of
a reaction, in the sense that,

"Well, off you go.
That's your job, go."

-The day we returned
to Portsmouth,

the nation turned out.

The seafront was lined
with people.

-When Prince Andrew came back
from the Falklands,

he was a war hero.

He was called the one
with the Robert Redford looks.

And that was probably
the height of his popularity.

People just loved Prince Andrew.

He was the most eligible
bachelor in the country.

-Would you accept an invitation
from the Prince?

-Phwoar, would I!
Yeah.

-He had the reputation
of being a ladies' man.

But it's gotten him in trouble
ever since.

-The organizers of the sports
display haven't forgotten

the Prince's reputation
with the girls.

"Randy Andy" has a practiced eye
for the ladies,

and his romantic adventures
have been well publicized.

-Prince Andrew was known
as the Playboy Prince.

He was a very good-looking guy.

Women were literally
falling at his feet.

He always had, you know, lovely,
exciting girlfriends.

-There was Carolyn Herbert,
the Di lookalike;

Broadway star Finola Hughes;

Carolyn Seaward,
a former beauty queen;

model Katie Rabbett.

The list, constantly updated
by a watchful British press,

goes on and on.

-And then he met
a lovely, beautiful

American actress,
Koo Stark.

Of course, you know,
everybody then starts saying,

"Well, who exactly
is Koo Stark?"

-Prince Andrew is off
on a Caribbean vacation.

He certainly deserves that
after the war in the Falklands,

but it is who he is with

that has made headlines.

-It turned out, as an actress,

she'd appeared
in an art house movie

where there were sex scenes.

-I want you to make love to me.

-This suddenly
became unacceptable

to the British public.

The thought was she wasn't
suitable marriage material.

-Ms. Stark, are you here
on vacation?

-Can we please talk to you
for a minute?

I know this is difficult.

-Just for a minute.

-British tabloids are brutal
in their quest

for new narratives
all the time.

I mean, they build you up
and they crush you.

And we saw this
with Meghan Markle and Harry.

-I'm sure that Koo Stark
was Andrew's first true love,

and I think it was mutual.

-Prince Andrew, I think,
wanted to marry Koo Stark.

She clearly made him
very happy.

-But it was bringing the family
into disrepute.

Whatever was hanging
on Prince Andrew

was bouncing off
on the rest of the family

and had the potential
to damage the institution.

-Andrew came under
tremendous pressure

in the court
of public opinion,

and perhaps as well
from his own family,

that, no, he could not
marry Koo Stark.

You know, he needs to find
an English rose, a British girl.

-Koo, this way.
-Koo!

-So, ultimately, they split up.

The pressure was too great.

-Good morning.
-Morning, Sarah.

-And then came Fergie,
as she's become known.

-Sarah Ferguson, age 26,
upbringing impeccable,

social connections excellent.

-Sarah's a close friend
of the Princess of Wales.

The two were frequently
seen together,

but at that time the cameramen
weren't paying so much attention

to Diana's red-headed
companion.

-In contrast to Koo Stark,

Fergie actually knew
a little bit more

about the workings
of the royal family.

Her father was
Prince Charles' polo manager,

and in fact Fergie had already
met Prince Andrew

when they were kids together.

-The first time that I can
remember was on the polo ground,

the usual place
where everybody meets.

-Could I ask you
if you could tell us

what you like about each other?

-Oh.
-Wit.

Charm.
-Yes, probably.

-Yes.
-Mm-hmm. And the red hair.

-And the good looks.

Sorry.

-Buckingham Palace rang
to the happy cries

of photographers today

with the universally
expected announcement

of their engagement.

-Andrew and Sarah Ferguson
were a fantastic couple.

She was bright,
beautiful, gung-ho,

would do anything for a laugh.

Ow don't squeeze my fingers.

Ow!
-Kiss me, then.

-When Fergie came
into the picture,

Prince Andrew thought
he was more than a royal.

I think he thought
he was a celebrity.

-You're a monster.

-He just loved every bit
of attention he got.

-Oh, God!
Don't fall over top of the wall!

-The British royal family is the
world's longest running show,

and what's happening now is the
introduction of a new character.

-The interest in Andy and
Fergie's wedding was immense.

-It's the true air
of expectation here this morning

because these people have been
waiting all night long.

I'm being swept forward
with the crowd.

In fact, I don't think

I could get away from them
if I wanted to.

-The public has always been
fascinated by celebrity.

And the highest celebrity you
can get is the Queen's family.

They were this talisman
of the new modern royal family.

A couple who genuinely delighted
in each other.

So, everybody thought, "Wow."

If something had ever happened
to Prince Charles,

it would be Andrew
that would be our future king.

-There was a sense that
the dashing second son

had married
this joyful redhead

and everything was upbeat.

But, of course,
very fast it collapsed.

-What have you learned
so things can be better

for the tourists this year?

-We got a terrific range
of merchandise.

It's so good.
Look at this tie.

Now, that is part of
this year's merchandise.

-When I joined Buckingham
Palace in 1988, my job was

as one of the Queen's
press secretaries.

In those days,
the media was sort of trumpeting

the arrival of Fergie and Andrew
as a breath of fresh air.

-Fergie!

-But I hate that phrase,
"breath of fresh air,"

because it didn't take long
for that air

to turn very, very stale.

They couldn't maintain
an air of decorum.

-Prince Andrew and Fergie
were sort of early adopters

of leveraging titles
for all sorts of deals.

-There was that story
we broke in The Sun.

When they had
their second child,

they posed up
for Hello Magazine.

And the rumor was that
they'd been paid £250,000 for.

And in those days that was seen
as an extremely un-royal,

exploitative thing to do.

-They were a brand.

You know, today we hear
about this all the time,

everybody's a brand,
but not in those days.

And I think, you know,
the two of them sat down

and said, you know, "We should
monetize ourselves."

-They were thought to be
cheapening the monarchy.

I think that was
a major turning point

It seemed to sort of go downhill
from there, actually.

-Her Royal Highness,
the fair Duchess of York.

I think Fergie thought it would
be champagne all the way,

it's gonna be fun, fun, fun.

But it wasn't fun.

Fergie was thrust into the royal
world without Prince Andrew

because he was still
in the navy.

-She was very unhappy
very quickly,

because she really saw
Andrew never.

I think she saw him
for something like 40 days

in the first year
of her marriage.

-He's doing the H...

or helicopter...
something instructor school.

-And here she was,
this young bride,

stuck in this gloomy marriage.

She was miserable and forlorn

and quickly started
sort of acting out.

-Tabloid newspapers published
pictures today

of a topless Fergie
sunbathing in Saint-Tropez

with her financial adviser.

-One picture showed him
kissing the Duchess' foot.

Several featured the pair
in intimate embrace.

-The pictures of Fergie
went 'round the world.

The public was shocked.

Anybody who cared
about the royals was shocked.

And the royal family
were totally disgusted.

-The reaction was
one of absolute horror.

-Buckingham Palace
issued a statement

strongly disapproving
of the photographs

and the circumstance
in which they were taken.

-Once those pictures
had come out,

Prince Philip refused to even be
in the same room as Sarah,

and Andrew was very weak
when it came to his father.

Because he has
no agency of his own,

essentially he allowed Fergie
to be sort of banished.

-The Duke of York,
who suffered the humiliation

of pictures
of his half-naked wife

being published
throughout the world,

looked calm today
as he was driven to church

in the front seat
of the Queen's car,

as the marriage of her second
son falls so publicly apart.

That was 1992,
the Queen's annus horribilis.

One of those years when
anything that could go wrong,

did go wrong,

-It's clear that
what we're witnessing here

is a national tragedy.

The fight to save one of the
nation's best-loved buildings.

-Buckingham Palace made it
official today --

the Prince and Princess of Wales
are to separate.

-The sad end to a partnership

and the start of a potentially
damaging era for the monarchy.

-1992 is not a year
on which I shall look back

with undiluted pleasure.

It has turned out to be
an annus horribilis.

-It was at that time
it was decided

that Fergie and Andrew
should split.

So, the queen did nip it
in the bud pretty quickly

because it's about protecting
the backsides of her children.

-If you look at
Prince Andrew's choices in life,

you get an idea
of what kind of person he is.

-The prince was touring
a housing project yesterday,

when he picked up a paint gun
and pulled the trigger.

-The prince went to
a novelty restaurant

where mock spankings
are giving by waitresses

dressed in schoolgirl skirts.

-A British paper
revealed the Prince

as few have seen him before.

-Prince Andrew was so different
than Prince Charles.

The reputation Prince Charles
has is as a statesman.

-Prince Charles is serious.

-Ladies and gentlemen...

-You know, he is genuinely
committed to the monarchy.

-To many of us in the West...

-There is something
quite studious about him.

And the same cannot be said
for Prince Andrew.

-Andrew and Charles
have never really been close,

because there's
an over-10-year age gap.

So, Andrew always grew up
knowing

that Charles was obviously
the heir to the throne

and he wasn't, but Andrew
had the edge over Charles,

because Andrew's always known

that he had the Queen's
intense affection --

that, actually,
he is her favorite.

That's given him
a lot of leverage.

We saw this with Fergie.

-London's Somerset House.

Here, the divorce court
in which the Yorks' marriage

was this morning
effectively ended.

On the railings outside,
theirs the last of 29

quickie divorce cases listed,

for HRH The Duke of York
and HRH The Duchess of York.

-The collapse of the marriage
to Sarah Ferguson

was a disaster,

in terms of both
their reputations.

-But Andrew has always really
stayed in love with Fergie.

-They still live together,
very near to the Queen.

-And they moved in very,
very wealthy circles,

and they wanted to be
like those friends.

-If global elitism
has a capital,

it is surely here in Davos.

-So, here's the thing
about royals.

When we see Prince Andrew
in private jets,

rubbing elbows
with billionaires,

doing rich and luxurious things,

our assumption is that, you
know, he has to be very rich,

he has to be a billionaire.

But he isn't.

If you're a royal,

unless you're the Queen
or Prince Charles,

you're just not that rich.

-The Queen has her own
private wealth,

which at Forbes
we estimated at $500 million.

She doesn't own
Buckingham Palace,

but she owns two castles,
worth over $200 million.

Her private income is about
$30 million a year.

As the heir to the throne,

Prince Charles
has this massive estate

that he has inherited and
the private income from that,

which is also
about $30 million a year.

But the Queen's other children,
obviously, were not as lucky.

Their income is really
contingent upon the work

that they do as royals...

-How are you?

-...and also whether
their mother wants

to, you know, give them
any pocket money.

So, you would ask,
what happens to Prince Andrew?

As a working Royal,
he made roughly $350,000 a year,

which would pay for
a lot of things if you're me.

But if you're Prince Andrew,

living a certain type
of lifestyle,

it's not actually
a lot of money.

Other royals don't live
that flashy lifestyle.

You know, we see them
in the news every day.

But it's their royal duties.
That's what they're doing.

You know, you're not gonna see
them on a private yacht.

But Andrew belongs to
a different group of people.

An opulent, luxurious,
fancy lifestyle is not something

you can buy out
of your own pocket.

So you're dependent financially
on your mother.

-This is where
you have apartments

when you spend time in London?

-still has these,

and I have what was
the Prince of Wales' apartment.

But they're not very big --
they're only about

three or four rooms thick.

-I went to see
Prince Andrew once

when he was living
in Buckingham Palace,

and I was sort of struck
by what a dingy scene it was,

quite honestly.

-And that is now
Prince Edward's apartment.

-It was as if he was living
in a second-rate hotel.

You sort of suddenly saw

just how he has to ask
his mother for everything.

He's completely infantilized.

-Prince Andrew's a brat.

In fact, there was a story about
how he lines up his teddies

on his bed every night.

-You want the teddy bear story?

As a Royal Protection officer,

we would do security checks
on their personal apartments.

I went to Prince Andrew's
private apartments,

and he had about,
I'd say, 50 or 60

stuffed teddy bears on his bed.

-Is this your teddy?

-He's got a new scarf.

-I thought, for a 41-year-old
man, it was a bit odd.

And then I opened the drawer

and there was a laminated
picture in the drawer

with picture of the teddy bears
all in situ on the bed.

Basically, if those teddy bears
aren't put back in that order,

Prince Andrew will shout
and scream at the maids,

so they took a picture
to make sure they get it right,

-Many grown men, yes, they keep
their teddies locked away.

But they don't still have them
on their beds

with diagrams
for staff to follow.

Most of us
have gotten past that.

So, the Queen is lumped
with this not very clever boy

who wants action.

And she has this
kind of conundrum,

which is what are we going
to do with Prince Andrew?

-The Duke chose HMS Ark Royal
for his farewell to the navy.

-For 22 years, I have
thoroughly enjoyed myself

with the likes of you.

-When Prince Andrew
retired from the Navy,

he was sort of jobless,

He was also short of money.

He still had a house to upkeep,

he had an ex-wife,
he had two daughters,

so he was given this job
as roving trade ambassador.

Which involved flying around
the world,

allegedly promoting
British businesses.

-How are you?
Nice to see you again.

-A great pleasure.

-It was basically a fake job.

It didn't actually pay,

but it gave him access
to a lot of perks.

-He became known
as "Air Miles Andy,"

because he was constantly
on an airplane,

you know, pulling off free trips
here, there, and everywhere.

-Air Miles Andy and his travels
have been too costly, say some.

His trade envoy work
costs the taxpayer

just over £1 million a year.

-Can I ask you about
the comments that have been made

about an extravagant lifestyle
and so forth -- is that fair?

-What is
an extravagant lifestyle?

-Sometimes people do look
at the royal family

and see perhaps that privilege
is being used to give them

a lifestyle that people
might think of as unreasonable.

-Well, I have to ask
the question --

what is a reasonable lifestyle?

-Not long after 9/11,

I went to Bahrain
as the deputy ambassador

at the British embassy.

When the Duke of York
came in for a visit,

the problems started
right from the beginning.

He had a private secretary,
two detectives, an equerry,

a lady clerk, as she's called,

whose sole job apparently
is to write thank-you letters.

We went with the Bahraini
officials in convoy

to the main five-star hotel
on the island,

because Duke of York
nearly always refuses to stay

at an ambassador's residence

even though it's free,
it's paid for by the government.

He always likes to stay
in the best hotel.

At one point, I was coordinating
things in the foyer

when the valet then turns up
with the luggage

and Prince Andrew's
six-foot ironing board

and tries to get his
ironing board

through the revolving door
of the five-star

Ritz-Carlton Hotel.

And I said to the chap,

"Why are you traveling
with an ironing board?"

And he said,
"I'm the only person that knows

how to iron His Royal Highness'
trousers correctly."

The whole thing was
an embarrassment.

And then I discovered
that all these other people

had the same sort of stories.

-What people really
became worried about
in the Foreign Office

was not only was
he unbelievably oafish

in his kind of social manners,
and rude,

but also he would be going off

and doing these side deals
with iffy people.

It wasn't even on the agenda.

-I am not doing this,
as it were, for my own good.

I am not getting
any return for this.

This is all done
on behalf of the UK.

It's not done on my behalf.

-He would go off and be partying
with these oligarch types,

essentially using
the trade ambassadorship

as some kind of springboard
for his own sleazy deals.

-For instance, in advance
of the Duke of York's last visit

when I was in Bahrain,

the private secretary had told
me during the pre-visit meeting

that he might be mentioning
Sunninghill Park,

which was his house that had
been up for sale for a while.

And I expressed surprise

because I thought this wouldn't
be particularly ethical.

-He couldn't unload this house.
Nobody wanted to buy it at all.

And then all of a sudden,
this oligarch buys this house

for £3 million
over the asking price.

The only difference
in this house

from when it had
first been on the market

was it was now in the flight
path of Heathrow Airport.

So, it was actually
even less desirable

than it had been
a few years before.

It's frankly always been seen
as some kind of a dubious deal.

-Prince Andrew,
are you gonna resign?

-Prince Andrew, are you
an embarrassment, sir?

-Prince Andrew,
are you resigning?

-There's no way Prince Charles
is gonna accept the freebies

that Prince Andrew has had

and then talk about them
and be seen doing them.

-He's become an embarrassment
to the royal family.

I think we should say,
"Thank you for what you've done

over the years
to promote British trade,"

but he needs to step back,
he needs to go.

-He just kept messing up
and making dodgy deals,

and, you know,
it came to an abrupt end.

Let's just leave it like that.

-And now he's stepping aside

as the UK special envoy
for trade.

It will be seen as a response

to the controversies
he's brought upon himself.

-Without all
the trade envoy perks,

I think he needed Epstein.

The moment Prince Andrew
met Epstein, he said "hoorah"

because Epstein was every
dodgy businessman or sheik,

all wrapped up into this
one little guy

who offered him
everything he wanted.

-When you realize that
Prince Andrew himself

is actually not that rich,
then you understand

why Jeffrey Epstein would be
such an attractive friend.

Because he would foot the bill.

-Fergie needed money
to pay off various debts,

and it was Andrew's job to see
if Jeffrey Epstein

could perhaps help out a little,

which we later
discovered he did.

-It was a pretty good
financial-social status trade

that went on between them.

And then, of course, the other
great glue between them

was Andrew's sex life.

-Every so often, you know,
there used to be rumors that

Prince Andrew and Fergie
were getting back together.

-Meanwhile, Andrew started
going out with other women.

-After the marriage, he really
sort of went into overdrive.

There were models,
there were actresses.

-For any young woman,
if you are asked out on a date

by Prince Andrew, you're
probably not going to say no.

It all looked very glamorous.

-The first time that I met
Prince Andrew

was on a double date.

You know, who wouldn't
want to be at dinner

with Prince Andrew, you know?

Andrew's a masculine guy,

and the fact
that he's flown planes

and he's like a real guy,

and I think
women are attracted to that.

It was fun.

But we couldn't go
into any place

without there being, you know,
20 photographers outside.

-Prince Andrew was getting
an awful lot of attention

and an awful lot of gossip,

which is exactly
what he's not supposed to do.

-Thank you much.

-In the '90s,
it was a tabloid sales frenzy.

-Sold out, sir. Sorry.

If you could get a picture
of Andrew with a new girlfriend,

it was worth a lot of money
in those days.

And it would sail
onto the front page.

-Andrew had finally moved
into middle age.

He'd put on weight,
he'd got greyer,

but he thought he was still
the young Playboy Prince.

-The talk at the dinner parties
was that,

you know, he couldn't
keep his trousers closed.

-I'd been a sports injury
massage therapist

for about ten years.

I got a phone call one Sunday
just asking me

if I was available to come
and do a home visit.

And I went to the Royal Lodge,
and that was the first time

I met Prince Andrew.

His massage table was set up,
but it was in a bedroom,

and again I said I don't tend
to work in people's bedrooms.

That was completely unusual.

I didn't hear him come in,

but this male voice
just announced,

"Great .
Do you take it up the ?"

And I shot up.
I was absolutely astounded.

And I kind of spun 'round,

and he was sort of standing
right up against me,

pretty much nose to nose almost,
and thank God I just had

the wherewithal just to say,

you know, "None of your
business."

He then said, "You can't talk
to me like that."

And I just said, "You can't talk
to me like that."

But from then on in, it was
just a lot of sexual innuendos,

lots of sex jokes,
lost of talk about, you know,

asking me inappropriate
questions about sex.

Every time I saw him,
he'd try to hug me.

He'd sometimes try and kiss me.

Just a bit weird
and creepy, to be honest.

And, quite frankly, a disgusting
way to approach a woman.

-Andrew doesn't drink alcohol.

He's never smoked
and he's never taken drugs.

But his one big thing is sex.

-My colleagues
at Buckingham Palace,

we used to have the joke

that he should have
a revolving door in his bedroom,

the amount of women that are
going in and out of there.

It was just -- pssh! --
literally every other day

someone would be coming in
to see him,

a different one every time.

-These stories started to appear
with increasing rapidity.

-And I think for Prince Andrew,
having witnessed the demise

of Princess Diana
from the press, I think it was

a bit of, you know, "Why are
the tabloids doing this to me?"

I think Prince Andrew
genuinely believed

that he has
his mother's standing.

We all know that
even if the Queen

were to have
a cocaine-fueled party,

we wouldn't report it, because
everybody reveres the Queen.

The difference is,
nobody loves Prince Andrew.

-The young Playboy Prince became
this sour middle-aged man,

who was rude, who upset people.

And people would leak stories.

-On one occasion,
a female turned up

and said that she was here
to see Prince Andrew.

We apologized to the young lady
and said, "Really sorry,

We can't let you in
at the moment

until we can get confirmation
from the staff."

So, she said, "That's fine.

Do you want me to ring him
on my mobile?"

So, we said, "Yeah.
That's fine."

She rang him, and we could hear
the conversation.

Anyway, he said,
"Put one of the officers on."

My colleagues took the phone.

He shouted
at the top of his voice,

"Listen to me,
you fat, lardy...

If you don't let my guest in,
I'm gonna come down there."

So we just...

And she went bright red.
She was embarrassed.

And we just let her in.

You would think
a member of the royal family

would have some kind of decorum
and respect for the staff

that are there and paid
to protect them

and look after them,
and there's none.

None at all.
He's just a horrible person.

He's a bully.

-He became this sad couch potato

living in his grand
but dingy apartment,

a certain grievance all the time
about the fact

that he wasn't bigger
and better than who he was,

and I think it kind of
ate away at his soul, really.

-Prince Andrew's
daily life in Britain

would be spent inspecting
military parades,

cutting ribbons, opening fairs.

His life was probably
quite dull.

-He was a sideshow.
He wasn't rich enough.

He wasn't the heir
to the throne.

Meanwhile, Epstein
was very, very good

at making him feel that.

treating him as if he was
a major, big deal.

-Jeffrey Epstein
was awash with money,

and property
all over the world,

and there were a lot
of pretty girls around.

-But the privacy
that Epstein offered --

the house in Manhattan,
the private plane,

the private islands --
that, for Andrew, was heaven.

I mean, he was able to behave
as badly as he wanted

behind closed doors.

-This entire sorry saga
boils down to sex and greed.

Prince Andrew has never had
a woman say no to him,

as far as we know.

But then we hear about
Virginia Roberts Giuffre.

-So...

I'd been working on sexual abuse
cases for many years.

-This is the only lawsuit
now filed

by one of Mr. Cosby's
sexual assault victims...

And I represented
four young girls

in the original litigation
against Jeffrey Epstein.

It was incredibly surprising
that Prince Andrew

would associate himself
with somebody like that

and bring such an embarrassment
upon the Crown.

But based upon his history,

it seems that Prince Andrew
has lived his life

very similar to Jeffrey Epstein,

which is narcissistic.

He thinks he's infallible,

thinks that everyone will
believe everything he says

and that he can basically do
whatever he wants,

whenever he wants, without
any consequence or recourse.

It only changed after Virginia
came forward with her story.

-We turn next to a controversy
shaking Britain's royal family.

Allegations in US federal
court by Virginia Roberts.

-Roberts claims that she was
forced to have sexual relations

with the Prince
when she was a minor.

-The explosive claim blanketing
Britain's front pages today.

-Virginia Roberts
was taken under

Maxwell and Jeffrey Epstein's
wing at a very young age,

around 15 years old.

They introduced her
to people of notoriety,

and one of those people
clearly was Prince Andrew.

-I was woken up by Ghislaine
in the morning

and told I was going to meet
a prince.

-Virginia was groomed
and essentially

made to be a sexual slave
of Jeffrey Epstein

and his friends,
which included Prince Andrew.

-Ghislaine tells me
in the car

that I have to do...
what I do for Jeffrey

for Prince Andrew.

-It's completely
inappropriate behavior

on behalf of someone
like Prince Andrew

to even be put in a situation
with a young girl.

-Powerful people
were allowing this to happen.

Not only allowing it to happen,
but participating in it.

-When Virginia came out with her
story regarding Prince Andrew,

I felt the same way
about her story

that I originally had felt
about the young women

that represented
against Jeffrey Epstein.

-Do you want to stop
for a wee second?

-If you don't mind.
Just for a tissue. I'm sorry.

-I knew the royal family would
attack her,

make her out as a liar.

All of the typical tactics
that we saw in the Epstein saga,

I knew were going to happen
to her, unfortunately,

probably tenfold, given who
she was going up against.

-Britain's Prince Andrew is
on the defensive this morning.

Buckingham Palace
forcefully denying

the bombshell allegations.

-Not one, but an unprecedented
four statements issued.

-Buckingham Palace comes out
all guns blazing

and just denies, denies, denies.

-"Any suggestion of impropriety
with underaged minors

is categorically untrue."

-I remember
when the story broke,

Andrew was away skiing.

And he actually came back
to almost direct operations

in the press office
to make sure

that the wording
was absolutely right.

-I just wish to reiterate
and to reaffirm the statements

which have already
been made on my behalf.

-He was, in effect,
denying everything.

He wasn't in
any of these locations,

he didn't have sex,

and he certainly
didn't know who she was.

-And her evidence?

There's this photo from 2001
in London.

Roberts, 17 at the time,
with Prince Andrew.

She says they had sex
that night.

-As journalists, we say there's
no words without a picture.

And there was this picture of
very young 17-year-old Virginia

standing in
Ghislaine Maxwell's home

with Andrew's pudgy fingers
around her bare midriff.

-The original photographs
that everyone saw

of just Prince Andrew
and Epstein hanging out --

that's...poor judgment
and character.

But when you actually
place Andrew

with an underage young girl
who then comes forward

and tells the story
behind that photograph

and what had occurred to her,

that was the pivotal moment
in changing the entire story

Was he just a bad judge
of character?

Or was he instead
an actual sexual abuser?

He was going to drag
the entire royal family

into a disastrous circumstance.

-So, the Buckingham Palace
machinery kicked into action

and shut the whole
Virginia thing down.

-I've had this story
for three years.

I've had this interview
with Virginia Roberts.

We would not
put it on the air.

First of all, I was told,
"Who's Jeffrey Epstein?

No one knows who that is.
This is a stupid story."

Um, then the Palace found out

that we had her whole
allegations about Prince Andrew

and threatened us
a million different ways.

-Power can be very scary
to large news institutions

or television studios
or whatnot,

and unfortunately what happens
in sexual abuse oftentimes

is that it is
a "he said, she said" story.

You have a young girl
on the one hand,

and you have royalty
on the other.

The press and the media
have a healthy fear

of the repercussions
of putting out a story.

And that fear really is
what kept news media out

of not only
the Prince Andrew story,

but as well, the Jeffrey Epstein
story from the beginning.

I still remember it today.
I was sleeping.

It was early in the morning.

I got a phone call
from another attorney.

And he said,
"Are you watching the news?"

-Billionaire financier Jeffrey
Epstein has been arrested.

-Arrested and charged
with sex trafficking.

-Good morning.

Today we announce the unsealing
of sex trafficking charges

against Jeffrey Epstein.

If you have evidence
or information,

we want to hear from you.

-When Epstein was re-arrested
in 2019,

my first thought was, "What are
the victims gonna think?"

I was hopeful that maybe
the full story would come out

and these girls would
finally see some justice done.

-2019 was like a new era.

-The Me Too
social media campaign

against sexual harassment is
now spilling into the streets.

-Women suddenly had a voice.

They were speaking out.

-Harvey Weinstein,
a grotesque abuser of women,

had been convicted.

-The verdict a victory

for the Me Too movement
and his accusers.

-Everybody thought, "At last,
justice is about to be done."

-It was a completely
different world

that that was entering into
where people were now listening

to these women
about their story.

-Epstein's arrest must have
shaken a lot of people

who'd been involved
with Epstein.

-Now we'll have to wait and see

whether Epstein
is gonna name names.

-It is time
for Jeffrey Epstein

and those who participated
in these sex crimes

to be brought to justice.

-Epstein being arrested
was a body blow for Andrew,

but that wasn't the worst thing
that happened for him.

-Breaking news
out of New York --

Jeffrey Epstein is dead.

-When Epstein dies in jail,

everyone starts turning their
sights to who's left behind --

people like Ghislaine Maxwell.

-And tonight, the whereabouts
of Ghislaine Maxwell

still a mystery.

-When this story
couldn't get any weirder,

Ghislaine simply vanished.

-Where is Ghislaine Maxwell?

-We don't know where she is.

-We don't know exactly
where she is.

It sounds like
she may be in Europe.

-This woman's just disappeared
off the face of the Earth

and she's key
to all of this.

-And that's when the story
really started to blow up

for Prince Andrew.

-Suddenly Andrew found himself
in the red-hot spotlight.

-The Daily Mail has got
10 questions here

that it believes
the Palace should be answering.

-As the story began to unfold,

Prince Andrew took it upon
himself to do an interview.

-His decision to do
that interview

was the most unbelievable,

self-destructive decision
you could possibly make.

I mean, Andrew strapped on
a suicide vest

and sat down with one of
the most forensic interviewers.

I was actually sweating
on his behalf.

-It was a Saturday night
in November.

I sat down on my sofa
at my home in London

and, oh, I was just stunned.

-I'm just trying
to work this out.

You were staying at the house --

-Yes.
-...of a convicted sex offender?

It was a convenient place
to stay.

There's -- I-I mean,
and I've gone through this

in my mind so many times.

And I-I admit fully
that -- that --

that -- that my judgment
was probably coloured

by my, um...

tendency to be too honorable.

But that's just the way it is.

-I watched
the Newsnight interview

with growing disbelief, really.

-Do you regret the whole
friendship with Epstein?

Now? Mm, ah, still not.

-I mean, there was a point
where I wanted

to stuff my own fist in my mouth

and I was sort of like,
"No! Oh, my God! Oh!"

-You threw a birthday party, um,

for Epstein's girlfriend,
Ghislaine Maxwell.

-N-No...

It was a shooting weekend.
-A shooting weekend?

-Just a straightforward --

straightforward
shooting weekend.

-It was quite astonishing,
the excuses he came up with.

-Here's the problem.

I've never seen Epstein
with a camera in my life.

-Andrew said the picture
of him with Virginia was fake.

-And that's a --
that's a picture of me.

It's not a picture of --
I don't believe

it's a picture
of me in London,

because when I would go out --
when I go out in London,

I wear a suit and a tie.

-It was just, you know,
great conspiracy theory.

-The photograph
was taken upstairs,

and I don't think
I ever went upstairs.

-You-- You're sure about that?
-Yeah, because the --

because the --
because the dining room

and everything was on the --
was on the ground floor.

-That interview
utterly ripped to shreds

every one of his excuses.

-You have to -- You have to
understand that -- that...

I-I-I-I...I-I...

But -- But...
But I-I-I...

-Yeah.

-It essentially revealed him
to the public

as absolutely
beyond the pale.

-She described dancing with you.
-No.

-And you profusely sweating.

-And that she went on
to have a bath possibly --

-There's a slight problem
with -- with -- with --

with -- with the sweating, um,

because I-I-I have a peculiar
m-medical condition

which is that I don't sweat, um,

or I didn't sweat at the time,
and that was...

Uh, was it...?

Yes, I didn't sweat at the time,

because I, um, h-had suffered
what I would describe

as an overdose of adrenaline
in the Falklands War

when I was shot at...

-And then, of course,
newspapers found pictures of him

wearing almost
the same blue shirt

sweating, at that time.

And then, you know, there was
the Pizza Express story,

-On that particular day,
I was at home.

Uh, I was with the children,
and I'd taken Beatrice

to, uh, a Pizza Express
in Woking for a party.

-Why would you remember that
so specifically?

Why would you remember
a-a Pizza Express birthday

and being at home?
-Because going to Pizza Express

in Woking is an unusual thing
for me to do.

-Woking is a strange little town
not far from Windsor.

And the idea of Prince Andrew
picking his daughter up

from a Pizza Express in Woking
became a joke.

-He can't remember
meeting a woman

and having a photo with her,

but he can remember a pizza
he had 18 years ago.

-Saying that you went
to Pizza Express

for a bit in the afternoon

isn't an alibi
to cover the whole evening.

It has "express" in the title.

-Prince Andrew is an idiot

for having agreed
to have done the interview.

I would've put my foot firmly
down and said, "Don't do it.

You're not allowed to do it."

-Andrew thought that his word
would be taken as gospel.

He later actually
told his mother

that it had gone rather well.

-Andrew thought,
"Ah, I've got a vehicle.

I can justify my friendship
and I can clear my name."

Well, he didn't justify
his friendship,

and he certainly
didn't clear his name.

-Backlash this morning.

-Did you watch the interview?

-This interview sparking
an immediate firestorm.

-Absolute car crash.

-The headlines
have been scathing.

A "car crash,"
"toe-curling," "insane"

were some of the quotes.

-Prince Andrew may have hoped
to answer the burning questions.

Instead, he's poured gas
on the flames.

-After the Newsnight interview,

the Queen went riding with him
in Windsor Great Park,

knowing the photographers
were there.

The Queen is very canny.
She's not an idiot at all.

She wanted to support him.

And she decided that she
believed what her son told her.

-Right after the interview
that Prince Andrew gave,

the US Attorneys' office
made it abundantly clear

that they wanted
to speak with him.

-The Southern District
of New York

and the FBI have contacted
Prince Andrew's attorneys

and requested to interview
Prince Andrew.

And to date, Prince Andrew
has provided zero cooperation.

-If Prince Andrew was already
feeling the heat,

imagine how he felt when
Ghislaine was found hiding.

-At 8:30 this morning,
federal agents

zeroed in on
this New Hampshire house,

where they arrested
Ghislaine Maxwell.

that, you know, Jeffrey Epstein
had made that she was gonna use

and was her "get out
of jail free" card.

Andrew must have been terrified.

drove past Buckingham Palace

in a move designed
to press the Prince

to help authorities
investigate Jeffrey Epstein.

-If Prince Andrew
was truly innocent,

he should've been stepping
forward and telling the truth

to the US Attorneys
and the prosecutors

because he was
an integral witness.

So, if he was innocent,
he should have talked.

But he didn't.
And Virginia filed her lawsuit.

for Britain's Prince Andrew.

is now suing
the son of Queen Elizabeth.

-I'm calling BS on this,
because that's what it is.

And yet, at the same time,

you see an incredible
inconsistency by Prince Andrew.

for so long

that she was like, "Right.
I'll sue him too."

Meanwhile, Prince Andrew
was determined

to avoid this lawsuit.

-They couldn't serve the papers,

because he was hiding
up at Balmoral.

-Prince Andrew claimed
the visit to Balmoral

was just a normal visit,

but during that time,
his first grandchild was born

back down in London.

He did not leave
the Queen's estate

to see his first grandchild.

He seemed to think that
if he refused to accept

the paperwork,
that would be good enough.

-But this evening,
at a virtual hearing

of this New York courthouse,

a judge will be told
that Ms. Giuffre's legal team

did serve the necessary papers
on the royal,

and the clock
should now be ticking.

-Then he came out with
some ludicrous statement --

"Well, I'm going to go
to court."

He obviously wasn't
listening to anybody.

He was a bit like a hare
running into the headlights,

not knowing which way to run.

-Prince Andrew hired
incredibly expensive lawyers

to defend Virginia's lawsuit.

They lodged all kinds of attacks

against her complaint
that were filed --

things such as the statute
of limitations,

the fact that she wasn't
a resident here

because she had moved
to Australia,

the fact Prince Andrew was
a foreign dignitary

and could not be sued
because of his status.

-But the judge
was having none of it.

He said no.

You know, "This case
is gonna happen."

-Prince Andrew has failed
in his bid

to get a civil case
dismissed by a US judge.

-Prince Andrew,
will you cooperate

with lawyers in America?

-The Palace ultimately saw

this was an absolute
unmitigated disaster.

There was no way that they could
come back from that.

And at that point,
they had to distance

themselves from Prince Andrew.

-Will you recover
from this, sir?

-The Queen loves her son

and she has very much
supported him

by being seen with him.

But she's also aware of
the public feeling against him.

-After the Newsnight interview,
the Queen saw that

Prince Andrew had the potential
to damage the institution.

To her, the institutional
monarchy is more important

than safeguarding
some of the stupid things

that your children have done.

So she took the decision
to effectively fire him.

that Prince Andrew

is returning his royal and
military titles to the Queen.

-She decided to strip Andrew
of all his appointments

and fire him from
front-line royal duties.

a functioning member

of the public royal family...

-And will no longer be referred
to as His Royal Highness.

the decision damage control.

-Given everything
that has happened

since Prince Andrew appeared
on television,

the Queen had little choice.

-That's very difficult
for any mother to do,

but she saw
the need to do it

because at the end of the day,
the buck stops with her.

And it's the same thing

to let him appear in court.

but why are you paying

that he can come back,

really gone his way.

of any crime.

But he's been sentenced
by the court of public opinion.

And the court of public
opinion is important

because they are the people

who decide whether
the monarchy is retained or not.

-It's important to remember that
Prince Andrew is not a victim.

I think he would like us
to think he's a victim.

But he was a very active
participant in his own demise.

Not only did he make
bad choices,

but morally
questionable choices.

And only he is to blame
for his behavior.

that holds all the secrets.
