Ptarmigan are just

We could use the whole thing,

My daughters suggested
that they would go and
get me some rabbits or

some ptarmigan for, um, bait.

Any animal, whether
it's a wolf, a wolverine,

a fox, a marten,
a mink, an otter,

they would all go
for that gut pile.

Rabbits are like an all-around
bait for everything.

And rabbit guts,
now that's a bait.

You girls have fun.

And if you see a ptarmigan,
don't pass them up please.

IRIQTAQ: Yeah.

CHIP: That'd be pretty cool
if they catch some rabbits.

We'd get something to
munch, and then, uh,
I can take the scraps.

Nothing gets wasted.

IRIQTAQ: No.

We're about to go get
some willows, so we
can make some snares.

That's the first step.

And then hopefully the
willows and the snares
will get us our bait.

My dad, he's gonna be doing
a lot of trapping this year,

so the more bait
we have for my dad, the
more traps he get to set.

The more animals are
attracted, and the
more skins we get,

and the more stuff
we get to sell.

So it all falls in together.

IRIQTAQ: Yeah, that's fine.

Hey, there's
ptarmigan right there.

TINMIAQ: What are
you girls doing?

IRIQTAQ: There's
ptarmigan right there.

TINMIAQ: Three to the
left and one to the right.

IRIQTAQ: I seriously can't
see them no more, Tinmiaq.

TINMIAQ: Look, they're
moving forward.

IRIQTAQ: I seriously can't
see them anymore, bro.

CAROL: They ran into
the bushes already.

I took my eyes off of them for
a second and they disappeared.

But, um, we'll
see another bunch.

There's lot out there.

Try again some other time.

They seriously disappeared.

CAROL: That's what they
were made for, disappearing.

TINMIAQ: A few ptarmigan
flew past us, but they, uh,
went into the willows already.

And they're all camouflaged.

So these one's got away.

But if we see any more,
we'll try to get them.

Me and Carol will
cut down a bunch.

You'll throw them in the sled?

IRIQTAQ: Yeah.

Throw any willows this way
and I'll put them in the sled.

CAROL: I'm looking for kind
of thick willows, so the
rabbit won't snap them easy.

IRIQTAQ: Fifteen
each, huh, Caroline?

CAROL: Yeah, 15 each is good.

That's what dad said.

TINMIAQ: Cutting some
willows for some snares.

Get us some bait before we
head out to Kiwalik for my
dad and mom's trap line.

IRIQTAQ: That looks so good,
this look like a good bundle.

TINMIAQ: Let's go turn
these willows into snares.

CAROL: Sounds great.

IRIQTAQ: Sounds
like a great idea.

SUE: If you can't adjust
to the changing tide, don't
put your feet in the water.

It's a poopy day.

I can't do any of
my outside chores.

So I'm thinking,
I like to make things...

Maybe I'd like to
make a set of bolas.

NARRATOR: Isolated
at Kavik River Camp,
it is key for Sue Aikens

to learn survival skills
from those who inhabited
the tundra long before her.

Today she will use harvested
materials to make a bola,
a primitive weapon that will

allow her to hunt small game
without using ammunition.

SUE: The Inuit, and Eskimos,
and the indigenous people,
they didn't all have a

high-powered rifle.

They had sticks and stones.

This is something I
found this summer.

I do a lot of hikes.

I look for a lot of things.

And this is actually, it's
a hunting tool called bolas.

You try to get two
rocks of the same or
equal weight and size.

And then a third one that's
either lighter or heavier.

And you work, and
you braid the leather so
it's all three are dangling

from about three foot.

Depending on what you're
after, you'd throw it
at the caribou's legs.

It would wrap around,
and they'd fall down.

With the ptarmigan,
birds have hollow bones.

The percussion is
gonna crush some bones.

You're not trying to
kill it with the stones.

You're trying to incapacitate
it, so you can get there.

I need to go and
create leather.

The only piece that I have
of fur and leather that
I'm willing to sacrifice

to the project is a
little summer hide.

I'm just gonna bring my
little sled inside and start
putting things together.

I need to go find that
hide, get some lime,
take the fur off of it,

and then start the process.

It is a little
summer weight hide.

Real thin fur.

Should be easy to come off.

Some of those hides get nasty,

nasty with the,
uh, bugs that bore
through them and more

like, it's not good
for sewing a parka.

It is good for getting
little strips of leather.

Here we go.

It's just, uh, this is the
lime and it's gonna change
the pH of its environment to

convince those pores to open
up and let go of the hairs.

What I wanna do is like
right here, I can pull,

pull on this
fur and it's locked tight.

Where it was been sitting
in the water, it's starting
to come free a little bit.

Whew.

I wanna make sure
I'm soaking it well.

There's bugs, bugs, bugs,
bugs, bugs, bugs, bugs.

This little dude had a
lot of the, uh, warble
flies that it imbedded.

So if you can imagine
when it's done, there's my
three-foot sections that I'll

be able to glean.

The next thing I wanna
do is, uh, try and maybe
look for some rocks.

It's like putting myself
on a scavenger hunt.

Oh.

I am a little kid inside.

I am curious.

Uh, I think he's a little big.

I do wanna play, but
I wanna make it count.

I'm old enough to know why
there has to be a payoff, but
young enough to wanna try.

I'm gonna grab extras
because what looks good
out here in the snow,

I may get it inside
and discover, "What the
hell was I thinking?"

Too big. Too big.

Too little.

This guy look good.

Kind of says,
"Put me in a bag and
let me hit a bird."

All right, I think I have
enough to get going on this.

This is a nice
little pile of rocks.

I've got a good selection.

I think I've got a really
good start on this.

I'm pretty excited.

And it's a good indoor
project because outdoor
kind of sucks right now.

ANDY: There's nothing
constant on the Yukon.

Every week looks totally
different on the Yukon River.

Uh, it's time to do some
training for G and for Naty.

So I'm trying to figure out
which dogs I wanna take.
You wanna go, G?

For Andy Bassich,

maintaining a kennel of
sled dogs along the Yukon
River is a way of life,

as they allow him to
access and haul resources
throughout dark winter.

Training young dogs to
become members of the team
is a demanding process.

And after breaking in Naty
and G last winter, they must
again be put to the test.

ANDY: So the dogs haven't
been run much since
their, uh, their training,

initial fundamental
training in the springtime.

I feel last year I gave Naty
and G a great foundation.

Uh, they understand the
basics, but we really didn't
have the time before the warm

weather came and took away
all the snow to really get
into some in-depth training.

The big goal this
year with Naty and G is to
teach them to work, to pull,

and also, uh,
more importantly, uh,

I wanna see what their
potential is for being
a lead dog in the future.

So onenow
is Naty's, Naty's in heat,

and she's in the part of her
cycle where she definitely
take if she got bred.

So I got to be super
careful about not letting
G jump her and breed her.

G is the only male dog
in my kennel that is
intact for breeding,

so I've got to be
extremely careful with
him around his sister.

I don't want inbred dogs.

For G, it's gonna
be really tough.

The drive when a female
goes in heat is pretty
tough on the males.

It really kind of
messes with their head.

They have a hard
time focusing.

All right, see the
commotion you caused, Naty,

huh, you see that?

Starting out today, I'm
gonna put G up front.

I know he's a harder
worker, so I'm hoping that
he'll just focus on running.

But with Naty behind
him, I might have to do
some adjustments here.

It's gonna be a real test
to see how G can handle the
natural forces when a female's

in heat around him.

I'm gonna have to be
really careful that this sled

if things straighten out a

little bit better here.

It's just a part
of being a dog.

breeding cycle that happens.

carrot on the stick.

And he's gonna run
like crazy to try and
catch that carrot.

Definitely working a lot

I have to remember
they're still young dogs.

They may be full size,
but they're still very
young in their heads.

So I've got to go slow.

So that they can become
great members of my dog team.

RICKO: Survival has to
be kind of second nature
when you're way out here.

You got to be ready for
any variable that happens.

of the Huslia River.

I was born and raised
out here in the woods
at my family's cabin.

We had to learn how to catch
rabbits at an early age.

That's kind of like the
kindergarten of survival.

My girlfriend and I, we
have five kids together.

We get them out here
as much as we can.

Teach them all the ways of
the life of living out here.

I hunt, I fish,
I gather, trap.

I can build things.

I can fix things.

And I can break things.

Society is a jungle to
me compared to out here.

Out, out here is a jungle
but at least I know what's
what, and where's where,

and who's against me.

Maybe someone in
the city might think
I'm like a caveman,

but I feel like I'm
a doctor out here.

In the city, you could be
wrong a million times in
one day and you won't die.

Out here, you could
be wrong once.

That's it.
You don't get another chance.

NARRATOR: After
traveling 49 miles from
the village of Huslia,

Ricko Dewilde has returned to
his family's isolated cabin
deep in Alaska's interior.

He will use this lodging
throughout dark winter as a
staging area to maintain his

lifestyle in the wild.

But after a long absence,
he must be wary of potential
threats to his safety.

RICKO: My cabin is
just right down here.

There's been, uh,
grizzly getting in the
cabin in the summers.

I wanna just look at it
real close before I go in,
because the last thing you

want to do is pull up and
get off like it's all gravy,

and then have one
of them come rushing out.

Ooh, it's deep snow.

There's a lot of claw
marks around here.

Obviously, a bear
got in there.

The window is busted open.

The, uh, door is pushed open.

Grizzlies are known to sleep
in these cabins sometimes.

I'm not taking no chance.

I got a, uh, .375
African safari rifle.

Uh, much better
than a .308.

You know, closed quarters
like that with something huge,
I'm not taking no chance.

I'm gonna take out
the heavy hitter.

Locked and loaded.

Ready to go.

Make a nice little escape
route here, in case
I need to run back out.

If there's a grizzly in
there, he ain't, he's
not gonna just leave.

One of us got to go down.

So hopefully it's him, not me.

RICKO: Hey.

The last time I was
here was last summer.

You know, worst-case scenario,
there's a grizzly in there.

Tore that pole
down right here.

It's a big animal that
snapped that pole like that.

Make sure he ain't hiding
behind this stairway place.

Make sure he ain't
laying down nowhere.

Not trying to get jumped on.

I got to check that upstairs.

I'll make a little noise.

If he's, if he's
waiting, I wanna make
him make some noise too.

One of the things
about the big animal,

it's easy to make
mistakes messing with them.

That's the power of the bear.

So I ain't trying
to make no mistakes.

That's a bad thing
to walk into.

If it's sleeping in there,
you know, not knowing
what's in there is, uh,

it's a little bit,
it's a little hairy.

You can't take a chance
with something like that.

That's a big animal,

you out if you walk into

something like that unprepared.

So I'm just glad it
ain't in here denned up.

It came in, it broke some
stuff up, chewed some stuff
up, but, uh, I could fix,

fix whatever it broke
and be good again.

Definitely was a bear in
here, but there definitely
is no bear in here.

winter storm has forced Sue
to shelter herself indoors.

To maximize her time,
Sue is using harvested
materials to make a bola,

an ancient hunting
weapon that will allow
her to hunt Kavik's

small game cost-effectively.

SUE: I've never made
a bola in my life.

I've never thrown one.

But finding one on my own,
it's a little sign from
the universe that says,

"Try it, why not."

I don't want something
super sharp, but you
wanna be able to scrape all

the fur off.

You're trying to go
against the grain.

Hmm.

It does take a while.

It may seem like an awful
lot of trouble to go and
make something like this,

but I like challenging
myself, and I like doing
things historically, you know,

the way that they
would have done them.

All righty, I wanna give
myself a nice straight
edge so I can cut.

I need to have about
24 to 28 inches.

Doesn't matter to me at
all if these are a little
thin, a little thick.

The strength is gonna,
not gonna be coming from
this very, very thin skin.

The strength is gonna come
from when I braid it together.

Okay, now I'm gonna
be braiding it.

Now these thin
little strips are gonna
dry out really fast,

so I'm trying to get this done.

Yeah, once this stuff
does dry, man, it'll
be wicked strong.

is in the final stages of
acclimating Naty and G to

becoming full-fledged
members of his dog team.

But training young
dogs is difficult,

and Andy must take
every precaution to make sure

they reach their potential.

ANDY: So yesterday's run
with, uh, the G-man and
Naty went super good.

A lot of confusion
because she's in heat,

so that was a little
bit frustrating at times,

but they both
were working hard,
and, uh, they ran with it.

I decided I'm gonna leave
Naty behind because G
is just really distracted

with her being in heat.

And I think what I need to
do is I need to just focus
on G alone, in the team.

It's, uh, it's interesting
how dogs can have such
different personalities.

Even siblings.

You could see he's
really excitable.

He has kind of a hard time
controlling his emotions.

He's kind of like me.

You take after me, G?

He says, "I don't
cuss as much as you do."

So I'm gonna just hook
them up into the team,

and then we're, we're
gonna go like heck and
go get a load of wood.

Lots of challenges
for the G-man today.

What a lot of people don't
realize about dog mushing
is it's 100% controlled

by voice and commands.

There are no
reins, like horses.

A lead dog is by far
the most critical part.

He's kind of the
quarterback of the team.

And without a
good lead dog, you don't
have much of an offense.

This fall when I was
out training the dogs
along the Yukon River,

I stockpiled really
nice dry wood along
the river bank here.

And the intent was to
try and come back as soon
as I could with the dogs,

get some easy, dry wood.

This is good, dry

I wanna get this loaded

It's gonna be

It was a good training run.

It was a good experience
to see that he's got
potential for working with,

um, being a lead dog.

I think I'm gonna be
able to add two more good
lead dogs to my team by

the end of the winter.

CHIP: It's really important
to make sure that my kids can
make a living around them.

I want them to know their
limits, but I want them
to know that there's no

boundaries, either.

AGNES: This is gonna be fun!

Baby's first
snaring trip, huh?

CHIP: These are
the willows that the girls
went out and got, and, um,

I pared them down for 'em
and added the snare to 'em,
and their mom's gonna go

show 'em where she used to
set rabbit snares.

Right now, we've got
a pretty high rate of
rabbits around here.

They're cycling up, they
make an excellent bait, they
make an excellent dinner.

Um, you can use
every part of 'em.

The guts, the feet, the

The thing is that, if
these girls go out and
get me a bunch of bait,

it'll come back to 'em,
when I trap something
as a piece of fur.

AGNES: It's real nice for
me to go out with my children
and go set some rabbit snares.

It's just a fun thing
to do with children.

AGNES: The way you catch a
rabbit to me, is to put this
snare right over the path.

that high off the ground.

Usually that's where
the rabbit get caught.

To me, it's very important
that I pass down the knowledge

from my elders
that I was taught,

and it's very
important that you keep,
um, teaching your children,

so they can pass it onto
their children, and with the
grandson growing up with us,

and around us,
it's pretty exciting.

Just having that little
boy, someone to teach.

Wow.

CAROL: Woo, I finished
all my snares!

TINMIAQ: Me too.

AGNES: We gotta let them
sit overnight and we'll come
back tomorrow and check 'em.

We just gotta let our snares
do the hunting for us.

Ricko has returned to
his family's cabin for the

first time this winter.

For the next several
weeks, he will use it
as a home base to fish,

hunt, and trap,

acquiring various resources
for his family's survival.

But making sure
his cabin is in working
order is a high priority.

RICKO: Oof!

I never see the stove
smoke like this before.

Oh (bleep), I better
shut that down.

That chimney's plugged up.

I should've checked
the chimney first.

Okay, I gotta
climb on the roof.

Hoo, this is an old ladder!

Man, this snow makes
it, like, ten times
harder to move around.

That was a mistake on
my part because I really
should've checked the

chimney before making
a fire in there.

Chimney was completely
covered in snow.

Man, that's some wet snow.

There it is.

Chimney looks clear
all the way through.

That's a good thing.

I really gotta shovel this
whole roof off tomorrow.

little better, not smoking.

Now that I got the fire going,

I like to, like,
burn food just for respect,

'cause, um, first time

anyone been here for a
while, and it's good to pay
your respects back to the,

that went before you.

A lot of, a lot of elders,
you know, when they burn
food, it's usually outside,

but, uh, I do it in the stove.

My late mom used to
do that sometime.

Just a little dry meat and,
um, a little bit of candy.

Now that the stove is warm,
I'm ready to lay down,
go to sleep, call it a day.

And the work begins tomorrow.

SUE: Sometimes I forget to
enjoy the life I'm living,
instead of just living the

life I've got.

days of a blow.

I made my bolas!

hopes of harvesting Kavik's

small game

a hunt for live game.

target practice.

I've never thrown these.

I've never had a set, but,
uh, I wanna give it a whirl.

Well, let's just try
and aim for that, uh,
little cone right there.

Supposed to be able to twirl
it over my head, and then
when I let it go, point.

And I didn't get it.

I should, with enough
practice, be able to come
out and just let it go

and hit something.

And have it be one.

Right now, it feels
like I've got a octopus
off the end of my hand,

and it's gonna
go flailing off.

Practice is gonna
be the key, here.

dead ptarmigan.

Once I can hit a bigger
target, we'll try
to get something more

ptarmigan-sized.

The high-powered rifles,
they're good, and
they have their place,

and I'm definitely not
getting rid of mine.

But what if I can
enhance my life by learning
how to utilize rocks,

string, and air?

I am the weapon, if I
choose to educate myself
and, and figure it out.

I feel really confident
that, uh, I'm ready to take
it onto a, a field test.

I think I'm ready to
try and get a ptarmigan.

I like challenging
myself, and this is
definitely a challenge.

There's absolutely
nothing super comfortable
about this whole thing.

I'm an old dog, and I have
a lot of tricks in my bag.

But the new tricks
I wanna learn are
actually the old ones.

They look very fresh.

It's a good sign.

But I'm persistent.

semi-nomadic, you

check our snares.

We got 40 snares out
there to go check.

And we got a beautiful
day ahead of us.

I've been excited all
morning since I got
up about the snares.

We set out yesterday and I'm
hoping I catch one or two.

I'm hoping the girls
catch a few rabbits.

Even if we don't catch
anything out there.

It's just the experience
that we have to take
my grandson out there,

and it's just gonna
be an exciting day.

I have a snare right there.

There's nothing.

CAROL: Oh, Look
one right there!

AGNES: Oh, look
my snare got one!

Hey, right on the path.

Look, son, there should
be more because we set
40 snares yesterday.

TINMIAQ: I got one too.
AGNES: You caught one also?
TINMIAQ: Yeah!

AGNES: Wow.

CAROL: Oh, I got one too!

Look it.

AGNES: We can use
the skin for a trap
bait for your taata.

So, you could go put traps.

TINMIAQ: Ooh.

CAROL: Look.

AGNES: Oh, look
Carol got one too!

I need to go check
the rest of my snares but
this is a real good sign.

TINMIAQ: Nothing in this one.

Here's another snare but
there's nothing inside of it.

Doesn't look like this
one got any either.

Oh.

CAROL: Oh, an animal
ate one of mine.

Maybe a fox.

Woo.

Some animal took my rabbit.

TINMIAQ: Let me see.

Where did I set it?

I'm looking for another
snare that I set.

It's quite possible a
rabbit ran off with it.

CAROL: Oh, where my snare go?

Oh, there it is.

Oh, oh, a bird got it too.

We probably won't eat this
one 'cause a bird got into it,
but good enough for trapping.

My dad will be
more than happy.

AGNES: We're thinking
to make a fire and just
hang out a little bit.

Um, cook up some rabbit that
we just caught and just have
a beautiful day out here.

It's awesome.

It's living the life.

RICKO: It's a life
of purpose out here.

You gotta appreciate
what you have and you
gotta earn what you have.

I gotta get this
snow off for sure.

It's a lot of
weight on the roof.

It does cause some settling
issues with the cabin.

It's important to take
care of this cabin for me
because it's something that

our family put
a lot of work in.

It's a beautiful piece.

It's just something
that I feel like I
have to take care of.

It's a lot of snow.

I've never seen this much
snow that I remember, but
I'm not no pro at this.

I might fall into a pattern
where it gets a little easier.

I got some figuring
out to do right now.

This is a six-sided
cabin too, so.

Wait till I get this done,
I got five more sides to do.

Might get harder on the bottom
layer 'cause there's ice
frozen through the sheet iron.

Hopefully get it done today.

I don't feel cold no more,
that's one good thing.

I didn't realize how
much work was involved.

You know, just getting settled
in, you gotta take care of the
cabin first and get it running

and warm and everything
so, it takes some days
to get all situated before

I can start
really venturing out.

Getting slipperier
and I'm getting tired.

It's starting to
get hard to do.

Ah.

RICKO: Whoa.

Hard to do up there.

It's starting to
get too slick.

Starting to get fun.

When you're
rolling in the snow,
you must be having fun.

You kinda wanna
leave some snow.

I mean, I wouldn't
mind getting all of it,
but it's just so much.

It's just (bleep) piling
up and really doesn't hurt
to leave some of it anyway,

because takes most
all the weight off.

And it also has insulation
value having some up here.

Damn.

That's a lot of snow.

And it took a lot of weight,
took tons off of that roof.

Phew.

Well, I'm glad
this chore is done.

Got some moose bone soup here.

Some real down-home,
hardy stuff out here.

Some North Fork River soup.

Being out here is kind
of, at times, I can almost
feel emotional, to me.

No one's lived here since
my late parents lived here,
and it's been over 10 years.

But it seems like forever
ago that they were around
here on Earth with us.

But, uh, with, with them
being the last ones that lived
here, nothing is touched.

I see my late dad's chair,
like he was the last one
to really use the chair.

My late mom would sit over
there, she'd be, you know,
either sewing or, um,

making fish nets out of twine.

And the pictures, the books,
everything about this place
just really brings me back.

There's times you take your
parents for granted when
they're, when they're alive,

and for me to come back and
see all this and what's left
here, it's just like, um,

you see what they've done
on this Earth and what they
passed on to me and it's

almost like I feel
obligated to continue living
this life and come out here

and use the cabin,

take care of the cabin,
and continue it on,

because it's a strong
part of my life and

strong part of my family.

Maybe one day, you know,
my son will come out
here and my daughters,

and they'll see this stuff
and it'll remind them of
me, so it's important for

me to carry this on.

It feels like it's close
to the heart for sure.

SUE: The way I view
hunting, become the
thing you're hunting.

It's ptarmigan, one,
Sue, zero.

But I'm not giving up yet.

I'm convinced
there's more in here.

They're very skittish.

By swinging something
like that in the air, it's
looking like a raptor coming

down on 'em and I'm
forcing them to flee.

Ah!

Damn, bastards.

Ahh!

I mean, I am getting closer.

So, I'll keep going.

I accept I may not
be able to do it.

There is nobody teaching
me, but I'm not a person
that enjoys the words,

"I can't".

Ah!

I'm getting close,
but not close enough.

Made the discovery
that, if I see 'em, and
they're running away,

if I start the business
of twirling it, they're
not as predisposed to go,

"Ah," when I start.

It's kind of getting a
little bit too dark, but
it's been a great day.

I learned a lot.

I'm not under the
illusion I'm gonna be
an ace in one day flat.

It's not the first
ptarmigan I've missed.

But I'm not giving up.

I'm not giving out,
and I'm not giving in.

ANDY: Having a dog team
is a constant evolution,

depending on
the dogs you have,

the dogs you lose,
the dogs you gain.

Yay, puppies in
the house, woohoo!

Well, this fall, I lost
my main old long-time
leader, Iceberg, and, uh,

I started thinking about
my kennel and where I need
to be in a couple years,

and decided it was time
to get a couple more pups.

It's pretty important
to, to make sure that
you vaccinate dogs.

Try and get the air out,
it's always good to do that.

Come here Carver, good boy.

I'm basically the
alpha male in the pack.

I'm the vet for them.

Come on up.

Look at you.

Everybody's being so
good at coming over to
get their puppy shots!

And I'm kind of the
psychologist for them.

Yay, everybody's gonna
be healthy puppies now.

Yay!

Okay, puppy, puppy play-time.

Woohoo, yay, puppies.

So last year at this
time, this is about the
size that Naty and G were.

They were just a couple
little poopers running around

peeing in my house.

And then next year
at this time, I'll be going
out with these little guys

to see what they can do.

I love having my dogs.

I think they love having me.

I don't think I
could ever live out in the
bush without having some

sled dogs around me.

AGNES: We try to
use everything that we hunt
and catch to the very bone,

and we try not to
want and waste.

IRIQTAQ: We decided to
make a fire up here.

TINMIAQ: It's a really
nice day, you know.

IRIQTAQ: It's great
to be outdoors.

We can make dinner out here
and bring it home cooked.

What are you crying for?

AGNES: Let him get used
to the environment.

IRIQTAQ: Yeah.

You grow up, you need to
be used of being outdoors.

You can't just
let 'em be 10 years
old and then say hey,

get the (bleep) out there
and go catch me a rabbit.

You know, you gotta
start 'em from a young age.

AGNES: So, right now
I just wanna get, uh,
my grandson comfortable

and it's always good
to have a nice, um,

skin to sit around, 'cause
it's just nothing but snow.

There ya go!

Watch out.

I'm gonna make this
one ready to cook.

If you guys wanna
start a fire.

The boy at least taste
one of these rabbits,

so he have an idea
what we're up to, and,

um, it's just real
nice day out anyways
and the baby's never

eaten rabbit before.

So, this is the best place
to have a rabbit dinner.

Check this out, girls.

This is how you do it.

All you do is just
get the bottom off and
you just peel it off.

Look at that meat.

CAROL: Wow. That looks nice.

AGNES: Yeah.

CAROL: Healthy little rabbit.

AGNES: Um, all I need to do
now is just cut these feet off
and the head and take the guts

out and gotta just get cooked.

This is a real safe, simple
hunt, especially for kids to
get used of being out here.

This is the way I
grew up, like setting
snares, small game.,ook.

TINMIAQ: Haven't eaten
a rabbit in a while.

Haven't really been
rabbits much lately, huh?

AGNES: Check this
little bunny out.

Yum.

TINMIAQ: Delicious.

AGNES: Could you pass me
a stick and I'll just put
it over the fire for now?

This is the way to do it.

TINMIAQ: Hmm.

AGNES: Ana take all
the hairs and stuff off.

It's num, num.
It's warm, even.

It's perfect!

This is a pretty good meal.

We pretty much got
everything we wanted.

He's happy?

Yum, yum?

TINMIAQ: Couple years and
he'll go set his own snares and
bring us rabbits for dinner.

AGNES: Yay!
