I'm 22 years old, and I'm from Hot Springs, Arkansas.

Andrew, why don't you cut the rest of these plantains?

I'm a first-generation American.

Most of my family's still in Nigeria, actually.

My great-grandfather was the chief of his village.

I would equate his position to maybe a mayor of a town.

Whenever we'd go back, they would call us

"prince" and "princess."

That was very out-of-body

because I did not relate to that in any way.

I've always been sort of like a type-A character

when it comes to school.

He was a smart aleck, actually. [ Chuckles ]

Straight-A student.

I think the last time he made a B was in the, what, fifth grade?

Fourth grade or something. [ Laughter ]

I made two B's, actually -- in fourth grade and ninth grade,

and I'll never forget it.

I know, right?

My mom is a cardiologist.

My whole family is involved in the medical field.

So, for the past year I've been applying to medical school.

So, when's your test?

You should always know when your exam is.

Trying to just get into medical school,

and had to take the most grueling exam of my life.

So, I make songs out of chemical equations.

My education is something that I'm very proud of,

but music is just something that I can't ignore.

I did gig on a cruise ship,

but I haven't really taken that many vocal lessons.

Oyidie: We don't know where Andrew got his musical talent.

I have an aunt who really can sing and dance.

Nobody knows about your aunt. Who?

Well, you guys don't know her. She's dead now.

between music and medicine.

If I go to medical school,

I probably won't have as much time to do music,

So I don't know

what kind of music you listened to growing up.

I listened to a lot of Stevie Wonder.

I'm in a place in my life

Well, I've been in musicals, theater,

and even gigged a little bit, but for the past year,

I've been applying to med school, actually.

Wow. So I got into four medical schools.

But I realized, you know, music is just like

too big a part of me,

so I really feel like this is my chance to pursue it.

Music is everything to me.

I'm Cara Brindisi, I'm 34 years old,

and I'm from Worcester, Massachusetts.

Music therapy was on my radar pretty early on

because my grandfather had Alzheimer's

when I was going to Berklee,

and I saw the power of music with him.

I remember once he was just sitting at the table

and not speaking,

and she started singing and he perked right up.

Now, he hadn't been -- pretty much nonverbal for a while,

and he looked over to my mother-in-law and said,

"I love you." Yeah.

And I think that's sort of a turning point

when she realized that that was what she wanted to do.

I've worked as a board-certified music therapist

with children, teenagers.

I spent the majority of my career doing work in hospice.

Right now I have my own clients that I see.

I'm so blessed that I have all these people over the years

that I've gotten to work with, and to know that so many of them

have wanted me to pursue my music,

and specifically go on "The Voice,"

I don't think that it matters about genre as much as

it matters about heart, and music is the vessel to that.

Right before I came out here,

I just binged the last season of "The Voice"

just to make sure I'm on my A-game.

My name is Billy Craver.

I'm 29 years old, and I'm living in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.

Currently I work as a pharmacist for a local grocery chain.

I was the first-time college student for our family.

It was a really small private university,

and we ended up forming a little band

out of pharmacy students called the Pharmonics.

Instead of the Harmonics. [ Chuckles ]

I was not a singer in this group initially.

One day, I was just messing around in practice,

and they were like, "You kind of sound pretty good."

And I went, "Who? I'm..."

[ Laughs ]

That week, I ended up singing one of the songs,

and then I kind of took over after that.

My genre is country music,

and I do like some older country.

But I would say definitely more of the new-age stuff.

Some of the people that I've gotten to open up for --

Midland, Chris Young, Luke Combs.

But being a pharmacist, it does take up a lot of time.

Writing, singing, playing,

I kind of have to fit it in when I can.

This is rough. I know it is.

You have a great country tone.

Apparently, you're a damn good-looking guy.

But there's one thing that I couldn't get over the hump of,

and that's just diction.

Even if you have the most country twang in the world,

I still want to be able to understand

every word that you're singing.

A lot of the syllables kind of blended together.

That's what kept me from hitting my button.

I'm sorry, man. Understood.

Gwen: I loved a lot of things about your voice.

I thought that your vibrato was really nice.

In fact, there was moments that I heard

really good star qualities,

but I think it was more just, like, accuracy.

But I really, really like your voice a lot,

so thanks for coming out to sing for us.

Your voice really does have a special quality,

and it sounds commercial.

It sounds like I could hear it on the radio.

It has the kind of tone that's cutting through the music

I met my fiancé when I was a sophomore in high school.

I have completed my Associate of Science degree,

and now I'm pursuing my bachelor's in pre-med studies.

My fiancé is so supportive of my journey.

He's a huge reason why I'm able to step out of my comfort zone

and follow my dreams.

It's hard for me just being here

because it's one of those where I feel like

Ava: When we lost Dawson, I was 13.

and he drowned, actually.

After his passing, I shut out music just 'cause it was --

But then, in high school, I found my old guitar,

I actually auditioned for my original

singing competition show because I thought that

I would meet Harry Styles and we would fall in love.

What kind of music do you like?

I would say I'm a pop artist.

I gig around where I live... Whoo!

...and I kind of grew up completely different than pop.

My mom is an '80s baby, so, like, rock.

And my dad is originally from Mexico.

My dad is from Michoacán.

In Mexican culture, they do, like, cleaning Sunday.

And so every Sunday, we know that we're going to have

mariachi music downstairs.

But hearing that my entire life

definitely played a role into my love for music.

I just graduated in December, and I've been playing

at all these bars and wineries, being in the studio nonstop.

My name is Dominic Patrick.

I am 37 years old, from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

I come from a huge family. My mom is one of 12.

My dad is one of 10.

I'm one of 40 grandkids.

Everywhere we go, we sing.

Baby showers, birthday parties,

they always turn into a concert.

Walk, you talk, you sing.

At the age of 15 was when my life changed.

I found out that I was going to be a father.

I remember just thinking, like, "How am I going to make money?"

So during that time, I learned how to braid hair,

cut hair, make clothes, just to try to find $30

to her a pair of sneakers or $40 to get more formula.

And so I stopped going to high school, just got my GED,

and just like focused on trying to do my best with my daughter.

Throughout my life, I always had that tie to music.

Even when my daughter was born, I remember having to write

a song about it because I was so scared

that I, like, literally had to find my happy place there.

Kimyata: It's amazing to see him doing this.

He's always, like, the type of person

to put everybody else's needs before him and, like,

make sure everybody else is okay.

So if anybody deserves it, it's definitely him.

and being a mother herself,

I really honed in, and I jumped right back into music

because it's my first love.

I perform locally. I do a lot of weddings.

When I get out there and I take the stage,

I'm hoping to show my daughter and my granddaughter,

it's okay to be passionate about something and to never give up.

You know, since the pandemic, I've not really gotten a chance

I could see that maybe you didn't support enough

Well, I mean, three incredible and super incredible people

I see somebody that was born to do what you're doing.

It's like, finally, you're on a stage,

and now America got to see you belt out

the gift that God gave you.

You know, your stage presence was great,

but I think that's one thing that I could help you with, you know,

just to bring out your own personality and your power.

That song is such a daunting song to take on,

and you have such a really powerful soprano voice.

The higher part was so compelling.

It sounded like it should be on the radio.

The thing that's hard about that song, though,

is that rap singing part. Yes.

Like, I feel like it trips everyone up.

that didn't require you to do that part, and --

You can work on your weaknesses, work on things that are hard,

but sometimes it's better to just change it

...and make it so you don't spend a second on stage

where you're not super confident.

What you're looking for in a coach is just someone

who can find the ways to improve on those little things

so that you get to 100 -- not 99.9 -- but 100%.
