to bring the proceedings.

He had to clear his name.

about the reputational damage
that The Sun would take

if they lost this case.

I certainly believe
that Johnny Depp had a choice,

the court of law
or the court
of public opinion.

He decided and has decided
to use the court of law
as a vehicle to attempt

to exonerate himself
of the allegations
leveled against him,

because Hollywood Studios
in 2021
no longer support people

that are accused
of being wife-beaters.

Yeah, the reality
is Johnny Depp's career

has been absolutely
damaged by this.

Not only is he going
to be labeled forevermore
as a wife-beater.

It means that authors like
J.K. Rowling are gonna find it

very difficult to have him
in their films.

Disney are gonna find it
very difficult
to have him in their films.

What studio
is gonna pick him?

I think, I don't think
it's going to be
a domino effect.

I think
it's going to be a cliff.

I think
this might be the last time
we hear from him.

...those studios,
they're gonna wait
to see what this...

Once these allegations
were made against him,

I think he referred
to himself as Quasimodo.

So, this case was incredibly
important

in having to try
to clear your name.

A huge amount
of your private information
has to be aired in open court,

which, particularly
if you're a private person,

is really difficult
to go through.

So, you wouldn't do
any of that unless
you thought that the benefits,

um, or the need was so strong
that you put yourself
through all of that.

This is his life
and his reputation on trial,

literally on trial.

Johnny Depp, he's back
in a London courtroom

fighting for what seems like
his career.

Johnny Depp
is suing The Sun Newspaper
over an article

which called him
a "wife-beater."

Johnny,
we love you, darling.

Amber Heard, who first made
the allegations,

was also in court today.

She arrived supported
by friends through
a side entrance.

Do not move forward,
stay where you are.

I've been all around
the world and covered
many criminal court cases.

But this was the story
which gave you

kind of unparalleled access
to the lives of celebrities

who mostly live
on kind of private islands,

get about in private jets.

And this was a moment
where you could sort of see,
in excruciating detail,

what was going on behind
the scenes.

The first day of trial was,
um, slightly surreal.

My team, several colleagues,
hadn't yet gone to bed.

They'd been working through
the night just finalizing

the last trial documents.

So, we went into court.

Then I knew
Johnny was arriving.

I just came down to the steps,
met him.

There was the crowd outside,

which you don't normally
get in any hearings.

Justice for Johnny.

Do you want your hair cut?

Justice for Johnny.

- Morning.
- Morning.

I was brought
into the case to lead
the trial.

There have been
other high-profile trials,

as you can imagine,
but this, I think,

must rank as one of
the most high profile
that there's ever been.

The case was interesting

because the defendant
was not his former wife,
Amber Heard.

It was The Sun newspaper.

One of the most
influential newspapers,
obviously, in this country.

And one does ask the question,

why would Johnny Depp
have taken that course
to go all the way to trial

and expose, risk exposing
the very little privacy

he's managed to maintain
despite his international
sort of success and profile,

unless he believed
those allegations
were completely untrue.

From the outset,

our focus was on demonstrating
that The Sun's star witness,

Amber Heard, was lying.

I traveled here to the U.K.

to testify as a witness
to assist the court.

After obtaining
a restraining order in 2016
and finalizing my divorce.

I just wanted to move on
with my life.

You're a liar!

One of the quite
unusual features of the case

is that there was so much
evidence taken

during the course
of their relationship.

Amber Heard
took a number of photographs.

There were also texts.

There were documents,
there were even medical notes,

but there were
also secret recordings
that were made.

I don't want a divorce.

And I never wanted
a fucking divorce.

I say secret, some of them.

One of them was made
by Amber Heard herself
then others were made

where both of them knew
they were recording
each other

as part of the sort of
therapeutic process.

There was also
video of which Amber Heard

had secretly recorded
of Johnny Depp.

Ah!

Motherfucker!

Motherfucker!

What happened?

And one does have
to ask why she was doing that.

She said at trial
that she was doing it

because she wanted to show
Johnny Depp the next day
what she says he did.

Whether or not Johnny Depp
was guilty of beating up
Amber Heard.

I don't know the truth,

and I don't think many people
will ever really know
the truth

about what happened
behind closed doors.

But she never did show
any of them to him.

Those recordings
and the contents
of the recordings

were so important, we felt,
in undermining the case.

- Justice for Johnny!

Oh, there's Wass. There.

Sasha Wass QC,
who represented The Sun
in court,

was this incredible
powerhouse.

She was the
sort of High Priestess
of the high court.

It is impossible
to sort of not be
caught up in her aura

and she absolutely dissected
Johnny Depp in the stand.

It was kind of
like a masterclass

in how to cross-examine
somebody.

I was given three days
to question Mr. Depp.

Um, Mr. Depp was used to
being interviewed,

so he was adept
at answering questions,

but perhaps not in a way
that was appropriate
for a court scenario.

Depp was the first to give
evidence here,

and while
on the witness stand,

he was asked repeatedly
whether he had
anger management issues,

something he denied.

He admitted freely
to the fact

that he had problems
with alcohol and drugs

in the sense
that he did drink a lot.

And as he explained
the fact that it didn't have
an enormous effect on him

and, um,
in certain circumstances.

He was asked
Johnny Depp in court,
you know,

"What kind of drugs
have you taken?"

And he reeled off this kind of
exhaustive list saying
he'd taken LSD,

mushrooms, prescription drugs,
cocaine, MDMA,
but not ketamine.

He was very clear about that.
I have never taken ketamine.

And you could
kind of sort of see

all the journalists almost
sniggering at that point.

All the extraneous information
came out

about how he was taking
industrial quantities
of illegal drugs,

how he was addicted
to alcohol.

Johnny being so candid
and so honest, we felt,

uh, gave
such a good representation
of his credibility.

And I think
that was a feature of the way

he gave his evidence
was just to tell the truth
and be honest.

The evidence
was that Mr. Depp started
abusing drink and drugs

in March 2013
after a long period
of abstinence.

On one occasion,
Ms. Heard laughed
at a tattoo of his,

which read, "Wino Forever".

It had been changed
from "Winona Forever".

And although she had seen it
many times before,

on this occasion,

she ridiculed the fact
that he was a wino

and he took ill
at this suggestion

and beat her and smacked her
about the face,

which was the first time,

according to her
this had happened.

And it's an occasion
she remembered very clearly.

What Sasha Wass QC
wanted to get across

is that this was not
a one-off incident,

that he had repeatedly
behaved like this

and this was
a pattern of behavior
of a domestic abuser.

Amber Heard described him
in two very different ways.

There was the charming,
sober, clean Mr. Depp,

who was a joy to be around.

And then there was the man
who would be drunk,

violent and disagreeable.

Mr. Depp knew
that when he was

under the influence
of drink and drugs,

he behaved extremely badly.

And he created a name
for that nasty side
to his character.

And the name
was the "Monster."

- Of me?
- Yes.

Just what
the monster meant became
a central part of this case.

Was the monster
a prolific domestic abuser?

Was the monster
in Johnny Depp's eyes,

just a much more
kind of casual term used
for when he lost his temper?

...because--

When you listen to
what they were actually
saying to each other

at the time in private,
her real complaint was that
when they had an argument,

far from him hitting her
or squaring up to her
or anything similar,

in fact,
Johnny Depp would leave.

He would split,
as she described it.

She-- He would run away
from the argument.

Now, that's precisely
the opposite sort of behavior
you would expect

from someone
who is supposed to be,

um, a domestic abuser.

Amber Heard
was unable to deal with that.

Mm-hmm.

Seriously, you know,
like, sit down.

He was no monster.

And a number of witnesses
came forward to say,

he was an incredibly kind,
generous person.

Here in no man's land,
Johnny Depp country.

Come on, I'll show you
where Johnny's club is.

In the summer of 2019,

I got a call
from Amber Heard's lawyer.

And he said,
"Amber wants to do
an investigation

on her ex-husband,
Johnny Depp."

And of course,
I already knew what it was.

It's like,
"Find, get the dirt."

It's always get the dirt
on somebody.

And I remember asking,
one of the first questions
I asked was,

"Do you want me to look
into Johnny's follies
and vices of the past?"

And, "Absolutely."

And I suggested I go
as far back as The Viper Room.

Can you just
get over here, please?

Yeah, slow down, okay?

- Where is the guy?
- Okay.

- We have help on the way.
- I know.

That 23-year-old actor,

River Phoenix, stumbled out of
this trendy sunset nightclub

known as The Viper Room
and died of a massive
drug overdose.

Amber knew
that that was a time

and a place where there was
a lot of drugs,

sex and rock and roll
and alleged backroom deals.

His friends say
Phoenix had been

in the words of one of them,
"acting strange".

At this point in time,

the exact cause of death
is still under investigation.

Los Angeles
homicide detectives say

an autopsy will take place
in the next few days

and should reveal what caused
the young actor's death.

I looked to see
if there was anything
going on based on the rumors,

whether it was drug dealing,

prostitution
or illegal gambling,

to find out
if there was any facts
behind those allegations.

What you saw of Johnny Depp,
did he seem like an...

I spoke
with some of the employees.

He's a really nice guy.

I spoke
with some of the patrons.

I got ahold of
Johnny's ex-girlfriends.

Winona Ryder,
Kate Moss, even Traci Lords.

I'm trying to find behavior
that's consistent with him
being abusive to women.

Well, what about you?

One thing that holds true
is that not one person

had one deprecating thing
to say about Johnny.

And in fact, a lot of people
said that Johnny is generous
beyond the pale.

He pays
his friend's medical bills.

He pays his friends',
family rent,

uh, legal fees.

Someone's in a bind,

he's always been there
to help.

That says a lot about the man.

And I admire him for that.

in children's hospitals
doing charity work.

There's something to be
said about a good-looking dude

who loves rock and roll music
and women swoon over.

It almost places him
in this untouchable area,

and Johnny was able to
trade off the back of that

and not really be
a fixture of the tabloid
news set,

despite being
one of the great actors
of a generation.

While
we've been so occupied

by the breakup of Tom Cruise
and Katie Holmes,

we almost forgot
about another of this year's
high-profile splits.

But all of a sudden
something happened...

Johnny Depp
and Vanessa Paradis break up.

...a mid-life crisis.

Where he left
his family and found love.

The one
and only person, actually,

that I've ever met that's been
in Johnny's life was Vanessa,

that this is not someone
who is in any fear of Johnny,

but is just
pleased to have caught him
on camera acting in this way.

The case for Johnny Depp

relied on questioning
the credibility
of Amber Heard.

He grabs...
Uh, he grabs my head, um,

takes a fistful of my hair
and says, "I hit your eye?

I hit your eye, huh?
Let me see your eye.

What if I pull
your hair back?"

And he yanks my head back
and he's, I don't know,
smacking my face

or moving my face
or and he's got me
by the hair and, um...

It's hard to describe it.

There had
already been depositions,

which is the American
form of taking evidence

and witness statements
in the divorce proceedings
in America.

At this time,
and he said, um...

He's yanking me
from side to side
with my hair.

And has he pulled out any hair

There were
a number of examples

of where Amber Heard's
evidence changed either
from previous depositions

or from the English
proceedings,

where she had given
the witness statements
earlier.

And it's an opportunity
then to test that evidence

against
the previous statements.

I'm truly sorry that Pistol
and Boo were not declared.

Protecting Australia
is important.

Declare everything
when you enter Australia.

So, in 2015, when Johnny Depp
and Amber Heard
went to Australia,

there was this ridiculous
moment that many people
will remember

when they basically
illegally smuggled
their two micro dogs Boo

and Pistol into Australia,

and it sparked
a huge diplomatic war.

In the end they had
to eventually apologize
to the nation of Australia

and Amber Heard
and Johnny Depp
did this sort of faux apology

where they were
kind of sniggering together

and did
the sort of faux serious,

"We are sorry
to the nation of Australia
for smuggling our dogs"

where they basically
were giggling together.

And at that point it seems
like they were sort of
two kindred spirits,

you know, that they were
kind of very much aligned.

this theater of the dog
smuggling in Australia.

But behind closed doors
it wasn't a laughing matter.

of filming Pirates
in Australia,

I had a source very close
to the situation

who had preemptively told me
that Johnny was off the rails.

And that his behavior on set
was causing disruption
to the production

and people's patience
was wearing very thin.

Johnny and Amber wanted
their wild lifestyle here

to be out of the public eye,

and it turns out
for very good reason.

Bombshell evidence
seen at London courtroom

is now spelled out
for the first time

what really went on
behind these gates.

Amber Heard alleges
that while they were on
their trip to Australia,

Johnny Depp had actually
held Amber Heard hostage,
she said, for three days.

She said that she had
feared for her life.

She says she remembers
him swigging whiskey,

as he repeatedly threw bottles
at her like they were
bombs or grenades.

Depp was manic.

He was abusing drugs...
very seriously.

Smashed up the house.
There was about $150,000
worth of damage.

Graffiti on works of art,
glass everywhere.

And according to her evidence,

he completely lost
his self-control.

Amber Heard said
that over the course
of three days,

he went mad on drink,

drugs and smashed up
this house.

At one point, she says,

he sliced off
his own fingertip

and then started painting
the walls.

Are you enjoying

The story
that Amber Heard gave
was just fantastical,

that she was having to walk
through broken glass

and dragged across a table
with glass all over it.

Her skin was shredded
and her feet had cuts over it

and that this was
a three-day hostage situation.

When you listen to the way
in which Amber Heard
gave her evidence in court,

it does appear
that she wasn't telling
the truth.

Not only had
she the means to leave
the house,

she only had to open, I think,

the French windows
and exit the building.

There was also a recording
that was, I think,

five-hour recording
that was made by a device

which apparently accidentally
recorded what was going on.

And what you can hear
from that recording

and what was in the transcript
of it supports the suggestion
that we always said

that Amber Heard started
an argument at one point

and that there were
no real injuries to her.

There was a very real injury
to Johnny Depp.

She threw
a vodka bottle at me.

My hand was resting
on the marble of the bar
like that.

And the first bottle
went just past my ear.

And the second one
was a larger bottle.

And she threw it from
about this distance

and it smashed into the bar,

which and this,

this finger, who I now call
Little Richard,

um...

was, was...
the tip of the finger
was severed.

And the... the-- all the--
all the bone in here
was completely shattered.

I mean, it's...
it looked like Vesuvius.

And then I got infections.

I, I, I ended up
with MRSA twice.

So, it's very complicated.

I was trying to just get
the finger back,

you know...

and then deal
with the insanity of having
had my finger chopped off

by this woman
that I was married to.

that this guy
was assaulted her or hit her?

In May of 2016,
just before they split up,

when Johnny Depp returns
to his flat

where Amber is still living
with her friends
surrounding her,

he is meant to have thrown
a phone at her.

And he leaves, LAPD turn up.

Doing all right. Um...

Okay.

And instead of
making the complaint,

she goes into a room
and takes photographs.

And some photographs
of the injuries
she says she suffered.

He's yelling at me.

He's screaming about,
about my,

about... "Let's see
how hard I hit you."

And, um, and I'm screaming
at the top of my lungs.

Okay. Oh, man.

"Help! Help! Please help."

I guess I say, "Call 911."

I'm screaming for help,

you know just, in case
iO is on the phone,

which I don't know,

because the phone is somewhere
after hitting my face.

I don't know where it
ricocheted and bounced off to,

but it's on the floor.

I can only hope
she's on the line,

but I know and guess
security is somewhere.

And even though,
they never respond when
I'm screaming "help", ever.

I'm screaming help
as loud as I can.

I also text Rocky, previous,

"It's amping up.
He's getting crazy again.

Please, just... I need you
to come over,"

because I thought another,
third party might be, um...

A third party being present
helps, always to...

interesting features
of the case

is that at no point
did she make

and there would have been
no argument to be had.

No, I attempted as best as
I could to hide this

and keep our lives
as private as possible.

And I did what a lot of
I guess women do.

I tried to protect him.

Amber Heard said
she didn't want the publicity.

She didn't want to make
a complaint.

But it's a very strange answer
in circumstances

where she did make a call
straight away
to her publicist.

And only six days later,

she went to court when she,
as the evidence shows,

she didn't need to
go to court just to turn up

and file her restraining order
surrounded by paparazzi

and with the most prominent
appearing bruises.

Our case was very much

that she had manipulated
the photographs.

Two photographs taken
almost exactly the same time

looked completely different.

brutalize you, Amber?

Amber, did Johnny
pay you to stay quiet?

how are you feeling?

Amber,
are you going to the doctor?

Amber,
what do you have to say
to Johnny?

Just after
the restraining order
which Amber Heard obtained,

and she goes to his hotel room
in San Francisco

where she asked to see
Johnny Depp.

Now, the restraining order
says he is not to come within
100 yards of her

and yet
she turns up on her own
to a hotel room where he is.

The tape recording
was made by her, not by him.

He wasn't aware of it.

And one of the first things
she does is to ask him
to hug her.

- Fucking...

And he says, why on earth
would I want to hug you

when you said
all of this shit about me,

which was a reference,
obviously,

to the allegations
which has been
then been made public.

But what happens afterwards
is just so bizarre
in circumstances

where someone has said,
you have been so violent.

I fear for my life
and I want the whole world
to know

and I don't want you to come
anywhere near me.

And that is
that she gets tired

and she asks
if she can go to sleep
in his hotel room,

in his bed,
and she invites him
into the bed and he declines.

And he goes and sits
in the living room

and this is the evidence
he gave.

And he puts his head
in his hands

and he cries because he cannot
understand how he's got
to this position

where his ex-wife,
who is accusing him
of all of this nonsense,

all of this shit,
as he describes it,

and she doesn't deny that.

He's lying in his bed.

And that's, we say,

such a powerful point
in demonstrating

that these allegations
were untrue.

What Sasha Wass QC
wanted to get across

is that this was a pattern
of behavior
of a domestic abuser.

And throughout the trial,

you heard evidence
that he had repeatedly
attacked Amber Heard.

There was the charming,
sober, clean Mr. Depp,
who was a joy to be around.

And then
there was what Mr. Depp
called, the monster,

the man who would be drunk,
violent, and disagreeable.
