NEWS READER: Diana,
Princess of Wales, has died.

This is according
to British sources.

The most photographed woman
in the world has died

trying not to have her photo taken.

That doesn't make sense.

Immediately, I said to myself,
with loud voice,

"They killed her."

I remember vividly.
I got a text from my office,

"You've been asked
to do the inquiry

"into the death of Princess
Diana."

REPORTER: Given the manner in which
the paparazzi chase Princess Diana,

this, in the eyes
of many observers here,

was an accident waiting
to happen.

It's very difficult to defeat
a conspiracy theory.

It was the very infancy
of the internet.

It was so new.

There were chatrooms,
there were forums.

There were things
being put out there.

Wild rumours.

The media just fed off these weird
and wonderful stories.

And there's so many coincidences,

so many odd things
that just don't add up.

Why would someone want to kill
the Princess of Wales?

85% of the ordinary people
of this country

believe Diana was murdered
with my son.

It's not only me.

REPORTER: An ambulance is
pulling up here.

It's with two motorcycles.

REPORTER 2: We're still trying
to piece together

exactly what happened...

REPORTER: On the banks
of the River Seine,

some of Paris's top detectives
are troubled.

They're under great pressure
to find an old white car

driven by a middle-aged man
with a large dog.

And, one-by-one,
they've been examining them.

A massive search
involving hundreds of officers,

thousands of man hours.

INDISTINCT POLICE RADIO CHATTER

KNOCKING

DOG BARKS AND SNARLS

The first thing Mohamed said
to me when I went to meet him

and I'd been vetted
by his various people,

he said, "You know they
were killed? It was murder."

Er, and I said, "No...

"Why,
you know, why do you say that?"

He said, "When you've been
to the University of Al-Fayed..."

..as he amusingly called it.

"When you've done the course,

"you will understand
why I feel the way I do."

There was not a shadow
of doubt in his mind.

It was an assassination.

And, er, I was reeling, really.

I mean, I thought,
"So, this is what my job is,

"to kind of try
and sell this story."

The top floor of Harrods
was a parallel universe.

It had its own atmosphere,
perfumed air.

You know, they had little pumps

pressing perfume into the air every
30 seconds.

It was just extraordinary.

There were,
you know, cameras everywhere,

there were security men everywhere.

This guy got on my desk every
Monday morning

and sort of fiddled with
the light bulb,

and I used to sit back in
my chair going,

"Testing, testing, one, two, three."

Everything was recorded.

The first few days in the office,
I sat there thinking,

"God, what am I going to
do about this?

"You know, how am I
going to approach this?"

And here I was with this wonderful
title of Director of Public Affairs,

and I was directing
absolutely nothing.

I had a tiger by the tail.

REPORTER: Mr Al-Fayed's belief
that the crash was not an accident

will fuel the controversy and
encourage the conspiracy theorists.

He believes that they will,
in the end, confirm his suspicion -

this was not a straightforward
accident.

Obviously, if that is the case,
that is a sensational development.

Mohamed Al-Fayed's
multi-million-pound yacht,

moored here on the French Riviera,
resort to the very rich,

where, tonight, another royal
controversy sparkles.

NEWS READER: There's fresh
controversy

surrounding Princess Diana
this lunchtime

after newspaper reports
linking her with Dodi Fayed,

the son of the Harrods boss,
Mohamed Al-Fayed.

REPORTER: This afternoon she boarded
a 150-foot cruiser,

also belonging to the Harrods boss,
to slip away from the media glare.

MAYER: Mohamed was trying
to deal with incredible grief.

The first anniversary
of the death was coming up.

Everybody was incredibly nervous
about how he would react,

whether he'd, um, even sort
of be able to cope with it.

Everybody was treading on eggshells.

He would quite unexpectedly
burst into tears

because somebody had made
a passing reference to Dodi.

He'd be in the middle
of a serious meeting

and he was just sobbing.

It was very, very painful to watch.

It's a difficult day for me

but you see the feeling
of the people

which helps you a lot, you know?

Er, you see the flowers,

that's tremendous,
you're overwhelmed,

yes, and this will help me a lot
to just help with your pain.

Here was a man who not only
saw his son

possibly marrying, you know,

the mother of the future
King of England,

but, you know, it brought
with it all the, um, status,

and acceptance that he himself
had always craved.

REPORTER: At Harrods, Dodi Fayed's
father has built a shrine

to Diana and his son where shoppers

can come and sign
a book of condolence.

His son, his only son's taken out

just at the point of a romance
with Diana,

the most famous woman on the planet.

God, wouldn't you...
Wouldn't you feel it?

He's been rather upset at

the idea that Dodi would be
completely overlooked,

and we get people coming into this
store day in, day out,

throughout the year, from all over
the UK and the world saying,

"Look, we'd like to leave gifts
and tributes and messages,

"and that sort of thing
for Dodi and Diana."

I just didn't know whether he'd go
completely sort of

off the deep end and say something
or do something that was just, um...

Well, just something that
you couldn't take back,

or, you know, undo.

Let's be honest, let's be honest...

..no-one has a bigger invested
interest than a journalist

on a tabloid paper for Al-Fayed's
claims to be 100% right.

It was like he'd decided
to press a button.

He said, "Right, no."

He'd convinced himself his son
and Diana had been murdered.

He was searching around for theories
as to how they were killed...

..and there is a commercial value
in conspiracy theories. Full stop.

A controversial documentary on
ITV tonight

raised new questions about the car
crash which killed Princess Diana.

Already, it's sparked a new debate

about the different theories
surrounding her death.

REPORTER: Tonight's documentary
claimed that Henri Paul

had a blood carbon monoxide
level of 20%,

which would have incapacitated him,
but he appeared fine,

so could the sample
have been wrong?

There is another sequence
of events

described by some witnesses

which does raise disturbing
new questions

about what happened in the tunnel.

One of those witnesses
is Francois Levistre.

on his way home, late at night.

Now, Monsieur Levistre,
there will be two flashes...

Yeah. ..behind you here.

No. Yeah.

And now, wait, we should see another
one coming up...

Yeah. Yeah. That second one?

Yeah. That was...
The second one. Yeah, yeah, sure.

You're absolutely certain?
Yeah, sure.

Monsieur Levistre identified
the much bigger flash -

the second one - and that came
from this piece of kit.

Now, this is an anti-personnel
device.

Shine this in somebody's eyes
and they'll be stunned,

disabled and blinded
for several minutes.

If you're driving a car
when it happens,

you'll almost certainly crash.

APPLAUSE

Less than an hour ago,

an ITV documentary highlighted
what it saw as serious flaws

in the assumption that it was simply
a horrendous accident.

Secrets Behind the Crash
opened the eyes of a lot of people.

There were so many good questions,

and they were so very well posed.

We needed answers and why weren't
we getting them?

On a more general charge that
this was a propaganda mouthpiece

for Mohamed Al-Fayed,
how do you plead?

Absolutely not guilty,
it's a ridiculous charge!

If this was the case,

it means that you can't say anything
other than this was

a simple accident otherwise
you're immediately accused

of being a propagandist for Mohamed
Al-Fayed.

Question mark after question mark
suddenly came in.

Was there a motive
for taking her out?

Who's responsible?

Was Diana killed - yes or no?

We've had a lot of calls,
Lorraine from Newcastle,

"There has to be some reason why
these two people were taken out

"and someone had to benefit
from it."

Steve from the Forest of Dean says,
"The British Government

"and the British people should
wake up and realise

"that Diana was murdered because
she had a Muslim lover."

Mohamed wanted as many
investigations as he could get,

because he wanted the answers

and he wanted as many different
people to be asking the questions

as possible, because that is
the way you get to the truth.

The turning point
was when Richard Tomlinson,

a former MI6 spy,

turns up in Paris to tell
the French inquiry

that he has seen the plans

for an assassination plot
when he was at MI6,

in a tunnel using motorcyclists
and bright lights and so on.

Mohamed came rushing into
the office and he said to me,

you know,
"God has answered my prayers.

"Here is the man telling
the story that...

"This is what I think happened."

When the accident first happened,

it didn't really occur to me
that it was, in any way, related.

But what made me realise very,
very strongly

was that a witness reported there
was a very bright light

in the tunnel and as soon as I heard
that, that made me click two and two

things together. So, the
combination of the bright light

and the tunnel made me think,
straight away,

"Well, maybe it wasn't an accident."

Mohammed was ecstatic,

and I have to say, I shared his joy

because it all sounded,
to me, so totally credible.

DOG BARKS

REPORTER: The investigation by

the French Judicial System
has taken two years,

yet the findings do not appear

to have changed from what emerged
in the first two weeks.

Now, it's official,

printed on plain white paper -
a drunken driver.

There was a frustration

because the French investigation
had not answered

the questions that many people
wanted answered.

This just left

a great big vacuum where all sorts
of things were being said.

A lot of people were wondering
why on earth

hadn't there been
an inquest in the United Kingdom.

I mean, Mohamed's conviction is
that there was a conspiracy,

I mean, he has
a whole history of,

you know, knowing Diana
and her family.

Diana had confided in him that,

you know, she feared for her life
and this sort of thing.

I mean, he believes firmly still
that there was a conspiracy.

He hasn't had access to
the British Intelligence files,

we haven't had answers, you know,
to who was driving the Fiat Uno,

why Henri Paul had carbon monoxide
in his blood, a ridiculous amount,

that he wouldn't have been able
to walk if he had and so on.

There are all these
unanswered questions.

Mohamed is a grieving father
who wants the answers.

He has the resources
and the will to get them.

My programme is called The Truth.

My motto in my career,

my whole career is to tell my viewer

we are always after the truth.

We are looking for the truth.

I asked Mr Fayed,
"I want to interview you."

He said, "OK, come and let's meet."

I asked Mr Fayed
every question you imagine.

He said, word by word...

"They didn't like my son.

"We have curly hair,

"we have dark eyes,

"and we are Muslims."

Mr Al-Fayed,
he let me go to Dodi's apartment.

It's like a shrine.

Every detail you can imagine

is left exactly as they were
there the last night.

The champagne that was planned
for them to drink is still there.

I felt their presence.

I felt that the place
is haunted by their souls.

I had chills.

In Egypt, a soul it will stay in
Purgatory

until it gets its justice.

A soul doesn't rest.

They said, "It's a drunken driver."

This answer will never be enough
or satisfy...

..satisfy the fire that's burning
inside Mr Al-Fayed.

In Egypt, we have something called
"Tar"...

Tar is vengeance.

Take the vengeance of the dead.

I will speak for them,

I will go to court,

I'll get any kind of proof,

I will give them justice.

It will never go away.

Dodi and Diana
being murdered, definitely.

Who would want them dead

and why would anyone want to kill
them - Dodi and Diana?

Because they still don't accept
that Dodi,

my son, an Egyptian, a Muslim,

can be the stepfather
of the future king.

The most chilling thing

I have ever come
across in this whole saga

was the piece that the Sunday Mirror
ran on the morning they died.

That piece said that

Prince Philip had been sounding off

about what an
"oily bed-hopper" Dodi was...

..and how it was undermining
the Monarchy

and that Diana had been told
in no uncertain terms,

you know, the consequences
of her action.

That's what was reported,
that was in print.

This is on the very morning
that the crash happened.

Mohamed read all this.

God, you know,

as a grieving father,

what must he have felt like?

Of course, he would suspect,
wouldn't he?

Mr Al-Fayed said,

"I had good relationships with
Prince Philip and Prince Charles."

They used to come to Harrods

and have a meal in the restaurant
or something,

and I used to meet them,
and we'd talk to each other.

Why didn't they tell me?

If they didn't like it,

if they knew that this is
a fatal relationship,

they could... He could say,
"Mohamed..." "Prince Philip."

"Mohamed, please, it's not proper
for the Monarchy,

"this relationship should end."

I would have told my son.

I would have given all my fortune,

I would have done anything if
they can just return him to me.

Are you sure
it's not just your grief?

It's not? No. It's real,
because I'm the father,

it's my son and
I know what happened to him

and I know who have done it.

I just remember everybody
saying to me,

"He's named Philip," you know?

And I just thought, "Oh, my God,"
you know?

I just said to him,

"You are dealing with the very heart
of the Establishment,

"you know, you're taking
on the Monarchy.

"You know, you cannot say
this kind of thing

"unless you can prove it."
Sadly, for him, he cannot prove it.

I've got my suspicions,
everybody's got their suspicions.

All I would say is that,
as time goes by,

the mountain of circumstantial
evidence gets bigger not smaller.

The death of Andanson really is

one of the big, big unanswered
questions.

I mean, here's a man, found,
locked into a burnt-out car

in the middle of nowhere in France

with a huge hole in his head
which,

you know, one witness said
looked like

a professional sort of hit job,

and the whole thing
burnt to a crisp.

Why?

Why would this happen, you know?

I mean, it was just bizarre.

I started off completely,
"You've got to be kidding,

"you know, the Establishment
don't carry on like this."

But, um, I'm afraid,
the more I've thought about it,

you know, the more I can see
exactly

what he thought
and why he thought it.

I believe they are withholding
some of the documents

at the request of the
British Secret Service.

There's so many coincidences,

so many odd things
that just don't add up.

Everything sort of...smells...

..and we still don't have
these answers.

REPORTER: Today's revelations may
not add to the evidence,

but certainly add to the intrigue.

Her chilling prediction reads,

"This particular phase in my life
is the most dangerous.

"Someone..." The name blacked out.

"..is planning 'an accident'
in my car,

"brake failure and serious
head injuries."

This is from Diana, in her own
words, ten months before she died.

It was a complete gamechanger,

another missing piece of the jigsaw,

you know, "Diana's fears
that she'd be murdered."

That fits in
with what Al-Fayed said.

It also fits in
with the large flash.

That would explain that there
was a...

And then, suddenly,
you're joining the dots.

The problem that
the Establishment will have

with today's story
is that they've not allowed

a public inquiry into what happened
to Diana in this country

and that has fuelled, already,

conspiracy theories
for the last six years,

and what today's letter will do
is simply give credence to the view

that there was more to it
than meets the eye

and we should have some form
of formal investigation.

85% of the ordinary people
of this country

believe Diana was murdered
with my son.

It's not only me and nobody moving.

For six year, no-one is moving.
You think that's fair?

REPORTER: 9.30 this morning,
and, in Westminster,

Michael Burgess,
Coroner to the Queen's Household

prepares to open the inquest
formally into the death

of Diana Frances
Mountbatten-Windsor.

REPORTER 2: Six years on,
British police officers

will now try to determine
what happened that night

in a Parisian underpass.

The coroner wanted the investigation
to get to the truth

of what the allegations were.

You couldn't leave the population
thinking there'd been a conspiracy

to murder the Prince of Wales'
ex-wife

and the most popular woman
in the world,

and that MI5, the Establishment

and the Queen's husband were part
of it.

Nobody is above the law.
