So what I'm going to do first is just give

an overview of the course and talk about some

of the logistics of how we're going

to arrange the course this year.

And then I was hoping that we'd have time

to do a little bit of a review of forces and moments

and equilibrium and free body diagrams.

Things that I'm hoping you would have-- don't say no.

We just started.

It's like three minutes into the class.

So yeah, things that I'm hoping that you've

heard of before in 8.01.

So we'll do that.

So, I wanted to start by showing you this mechanic statue.

This is in San Francisco on Market Street.

So, since I've started teaching mechanics

I've been going around and collecting

pictures of mechanics' art.

Who knew there was any mechanics' art to start with?

It turns out there is.

This is a famous statute.

It says, dedicated to mechanics.

And it was given by somebody in memory of his father.

And here's a picture of the mechanic statute.

There's a giant lever, and the lever

is being pulled by these big, muscular men.

And then, here's the inscription at the beginning.

And if you go online you can see more pictures of this.

And one of the interesting things

is, in the 1906 earthquake in San Francisco,

this was one of the few things that survived.

There's photographs of all of downtown San Francisco totally

burned to the ground, and this statue is still there.

Anyway, I liked it because it said

it was dedicated to mechanics, and it was a big lever.

So that's mechanics.

What we're going to do in this class

is some solid mechanics and some mechanical behavior

of materials.

So we'll get into that in a bit.
