Being here in Project Runway,
it's the experience of lifetime.

I have been HIV positive for 17 years,
and I've never been healthier.

It wasn't an easy road to get here.

So, for me, the ultimate goal is
really to make it to the Bryant Park.

I'm sending you on a field trip.

"Uh-oh, what do you gonna have to do?"

in the middle of New York City,

and Tim is there waiting for us.

Hey, everybody.
Please follow me.

All the designers, "What, what is it?
What could it be?"

Who's standing there, but a Tiki Barber.

One of the best running back
that the Giants ever had.

Oh, my god.

Designers, I am honored to introduce Tiki Barber.

Legendary running back for the New York Giants,
and now a correspondent for the Today Show.

Tiki is going to present your challenge.

Thank you.

None of us really know who he is,
but wow, you know, he's gorgeous.

I know nothing about football

except that it's probably the one time on television
where spandex is acceptable.

It's good to see all of you.

Your challenge is to design an outfit for me
to wear on the Today Show.

90 percent of the designers were dying.

And menswear, the tailoring is just so meticulous,
and there's so much work to do,

and detail work, and... oh.

Now I have particular challenges.

When you try to outfit me, because my neck is so big,
my waist is skinny, but I have a big butt,

and clothes don't fit me exactly right.

So my wife and I have spent a lot of time
trying to figure out what looks good on me.

We like dark colors, but also like patterns,
and texture, and depth.

That doesn't necessarily have to be a suit,
but it does have to be something that's comfortable.

Do you guys have any questions?

Do you like little, like um, subtle details?

I love details, it conveys our personal styles.

What is your favorite, like colors
and your favorite outfit?

I'm not afraid of color.

I wear pink sometimes, I wear pastels,
as long as it accents the whole outfit.

and a budget of 150 dollars.

we have as reference that we were wearing?

I started sketching,
and then I realized I had no idea.

How do you even really sketch menswear?

I have never done men's clothing.

I think we're all struggling as of right now
with this challenge,

Most of us don't do menswear.

For Tiki, I really automatically just wanted
to go for the suit look.

I've done menswear in the past.

Not that many people have that much
menswear experience,

so I'm dying to see what's gonna happen
with everybody, including myself.

I'll hold it in the back.

- Is that tight on you? Or just because you've got..
- Yeah, but I'm like...

Something to give it a little color,
I think it would be nice a little dark than this.

I wanted to make a sportswear type of a blazer,
a tailored men's dress shirt,

and I wanted to make a pair of nice slacks.

Time's going by quickly,
and I was naturally nervous.

Get off, you guys.

Does he like hot pants?

How much are buttons a piece?
Oh, here we go.

- You have 10 minutes.

- Okay, are you all right?
- I'm freaking, but I'm good.

More beige, you know,
like school uniform pants.

As a stylist for television,

I know what works on set,
I know that some stripes don't work on set,

so I got navy fleece, plaid man shirting,
and a khaki chino for the pants.

- We have a minute.
- Great. He's getting the ticket right now...

Just have to be in line. That's all.

Right.

Everybody, it's time over. Done.

Let's take this challenge back to the work room.

It's been enough of a challenge here.

Quickly, quickly, quickly.

I'm thinking the only way I can do well
is if I make a suit.

I have to show them that I can make a suit.

And once I make pattern,
that sewing is not a problem.

It's just... pattern.

Having never done menswear,
I'm not sure why I decided to go for a full on suit.

It's probably the hardest thing
I could have picked to do.

I knew that I wanted to do a some type of blazer,

and I knew that I wanted to do a pant that was lighter,
and it's a lot of work,

but I know that I am a fast sewer,
so I'm not worried.

There's a lot of people that might not finish this time.

Jack, I know this is another ignorant question,
will you spend 2 inches, 2 inches, 2 inches,
two and a half, two?

You don't want a fat waistband.
2 inches, like...

- That's too much.
- Yeah.

I'm gonna do three pieces,

one being the sporty outer wear jacket,
polo shirt, and then a really nice pair slacks.

Jack was a trooper, I'm up to ask for help on
those things that I was completely poor at.

It's one thing to design it, and have a team make it,
and it's another thing to actually make the dag-on sample.

Like, I know how it's supposed to be made,
but I never make menwear.

I've done a lot of designing,
but I haven't done a lot of making men's clothes.

- You didn't tighten the front?
- No, I just...

Oh, but that looks good.
Little wrap and pleat.

I drew you cherries on your ass.

I happened to be wearing flat front shorts

that were basically identical to the silhouette
that I wanted to use for the design, so...

I promptly took them off, and rip them apart,
and made a pattern out of them.

Can I ask you guys a question,
can we press it? / Yeah.

- And then, just trace it?
- Yeah. / Okay.

- Thank you for being gracious enough to share.
- No problem.

This is so much easier than just drafting it
and like doing muslin,

cause I'm not gonna do the muslin now.

I'm gonna work with fabric.

Jack took off his shorts,
and traced the pattern.

I think Carmen and Victorya used the pattern
that already existed.

Everybody was worried about time,
but I do not think it was fair.

I asked, yes, before I'm like...

then they're like totally fine.

But I would've asked
if you could share a pattern?

This is... this is a collaborative pattern.

I use my shorts as a pattern,
and that's not against the rules.

Jealousies are gonna bring out
the ugly and... whatever.

The intensity is definitely up a notch today
in the work room.

The menswear has brought forth the claws.

- How long do we have in here until tonight?

Do these people know how long
it takes to do this stuff?

were begining to really freak out,

because they saw how much time
they're gonna have the next day

be crazy to get it all done.

I am so exited about having the models.

The guys are good looking,

We were freaking out. I think my vest
is gonna be like glued together in the back.

The moment we stepped foot in that room,

we all just went straight to the work,
we were all on fire.

We get so stressed out that it's hard to remember
that this is like such a fantasy experience.

The time constraints are definitely making for
a more stressful environment than we've seen so far.

You're so fast, it's like frightening.

Definitley during this challenge,
I think my speed is my biggest asset.

I'm getting so much done already,
so I'm not worried.

I'm a lot older than most of the people in the room,

and I never have had any sort of
formal fashion training at all,

I'm completely self-taught.

In 4th grade when my mother was having my pants,

I pushed her out of the way and
said "Let me get that sewing machine".

Yeah, pants!

I'm good at pants.

Pants are just two big sleeves sewn together.
It's not that hard.

I do not have an experience in menswear,

but I felt the need to drape a pair of trousers
with a testing fabric, muslin.

Wow, nice, dude.

Wow, those look nice.

And they're not traced alphabet pattern
like some other pants.

I'm not accusing anyone,
I'm just saying, I know that some did.

- Snap.

Designers, I have a very nice announcement to make.

I'm getting all his measurements to the teeth.

We were given our models
for this challenge at random,

and to spend time with our models
is gonna make a huge difference.

Now we get fun male models,
so it makes a little worthy. / Yes, right.

The guys are good looking,
so the girls are excited...

Everybody in the room was looking
all over the place,

so obvious like... disrobing man.

It's a quite exciting afternoon.

When I met my model, David,
I was like wow,

cause he's beautiful,
he is very beautiful.

I can't believe these fit you so well.

Everyone of gay guys in the room
was like freaking out.

Being the only straight guy,
I'm just like, whatever, let's move along.

Okay.

I'm finally understanding what it's like for
straight guys when they say,

"Oh, my god. I can't believe you get all these hot chicks
standing around in their underwear."

Okay, fine. You know...

I get it.

Wow.

Wow, these fit your ass perfect.

Just because of the way I am,

I personally am uncomfortable with you getting undressed here
like the other professional models do.

I have a tendensy to be a bit shy,

I have a boyfriend, and he is the only person
I've actually fitted on intimately.

I haven't cut my fabric,
I mean, I'm just drafting my pattern,

so I put the muslins that I put together on him,
to try them out.

but the shirt is kind of a nightmare.

and recut everything,

In these situations, you just do
whatever you have to do to make it work.

I'm totally freaking out, there's no time
to sew all these garments, and to do a jacket.

I'm gonna be lucky if I get a shirt made.

This is why I admire those little old men
that sit in those tailor shops,

There's like no joke.

We all were so overwhelmed at that point.

We don't have the time

I know he said he was experimenting
with colors though,

I wanted a colored pinstripes
if you look it's like subtle pants. / Okay.

And pairing that, with your classic dress shirt
with a few details on it,

and on top of that, I'm making a vest.

I love the color,
I love the vest idea.

- It's great, again the layering, so it's great.

I'm gonna make a suit
with a jacket, vest, pants and a shirt.

Okay, I'm making a dress shirt, tie, suit,
and a pocket square.

And one thing I did do for his butt
is put a double vent.

This way, you know, could stick out,
so he's gonna look odd.

I think the double vent is a great idea.

Have you cut the fabric for the jacket?

- No, so I have a lot of work to do.

I feel really good about it.

It's coming out great,

So basically, I'm going for more a leisure look,
but with beautiful like suit materials.

I want the jacket to be in this really nice,
um, chocolate color, that's slightly headered.

Um, this is reminiscent of like members' only jacket,
and it's very casual.

It worries me, too.
It worries me.

I'd reconsider the design of it.

What's the matter?

I don't think I have enough material.

She said that it looks very much like members' only jacket,
and members' only is reminiscent of the 80s,

so I was a little jolted
because it was so late in the hour,

and I knew I didn't have enough fabric
to start over completley.

I decided that I should really
scale back on my original design,

but I unfortunately did not give myself a lot options
by not purchasing enough fabric.

I'm gonna make a vest
with the dress shirt, and the tie.

It was down to crunch time,
and I'm really good at making vests,

so I changed everything up,
drafted the pattern,

chopped off a vest,
used the lining as a back.

Like I'm totally doing of a vest,
and I'm thinking I'm not doing that vest.

What will you have?

The dress shirt and pants, right now.

But if I have pants and a shirt, at least I know,
I was covered if I wasn't able to get to the vest.

I didn't wanna have a nude model
walking down the runway.

I have fifty minutes,
and I'm f***ed.

I was challenging myself to do a lot,
I was just overwhelmed.

For the record, this is the hardest challenge
I've ever had in my life.

My shirt is adorable.

It's good, because that's all I got, going on.

I'm not gonna make the vest,

I'd rather send two things down the runway
that I know are really well-made, and fit really well,

so I feel good.

I wasn't expecting to run into some of
the obstacles that I have run into.

So I'm really concerned that I'm not even gonna
have enough time to do the shirt.

I feel great that I have three pieces, and that my look
came together the way it was in my head.

When the model arrived, I asked
"Can you sew buttons?"

I don't know what I did wrong.

I put the shirt on, and I was horrified.

I can't even button it,
the neck is too big, it's a f***ing nightmare.

So I use pins to hem his jacket,
and his sleeve hems.

It's not working at all,
and I'm really freaked out.

How do I style it to make it look presentable?

Mine's the problem.

Everybody else's good.

This is not good for me.

I had my model try on the pants,
and I'm terrified about the crotch,

the fit was just like beyond horrible.

I didn't even have time to do my shrit,

that are jacked up.

and two days to finish this look.

I've never done menswear.

I really felt like if I can do this,
I can do anything.

I was very proud of my work.

Carmen Webber

When I saw my look coming down the runway,
I did not feel good at all.

Because there is no shirt.

That is not representation at all
of who I am as a designer.

In all honesty, it was the most interesting.

My model looked good in it.
I liked it a lot.

I feel pretty confident,
because my garment's finished,

it's three pieces, the color palette is nice,
and it's definitely TV-friendly.

I'm very happy.

I think my look is a little bit less for more hip,
and somewhat useful,

I think it's a great menswear look.

This is the worst thing I've ever made.

He looks good in the pants,

but it looks like the shirt was made by kindergartner.

I'm embarrassed in front of my peers.

I think the outfit is very much in line
with what Tiki asked for.

It's more conservative.
I can see him wearing it.

I was unhappy with my garment,

but amazingly I was able to somehow pull it off,
and complete the look.

It looked like cool menswear,
but like a little twist to it,

I see a little glistens up here and there.

I would like to start with Kit.

First, I would like to hear with Tiki things.

I like this look.

I like the texture in the shirt.
It's not loud, but it's there.

And it's conservative,
and it fits my nature.

What is your jacket made of?

My jacket is made out of fleece.

I think you are smart picking that navy fleece.

Cause if that wasn't in navy fleece,
like, give me a Xanax, I'm asleep.

I like the overall presentation.

And I think you did well.

I thought it was messy.

It's conservative, yet, has style,
it's just messy.

What I don't understand,

How on earth you can let your model
walk down the runway with this mess around the neck?

What is that?

Could you fold that and show us
what it really does?

No, no.
It is completely messed up.

What happened? Let's really see
what's going on. / Let's see the shirt.

It's a mess.

The funny thing is the tie for the crazy proportion of it,
you sewed it well.

- I think so too.

And I never made a tie in my life.

Well, if a guy was 7' 3",
it would be fabulous tie for him.

Unfortunately, I'm 5' 9".

The trousers fit him very nicely.

I think that the shirt is a classic shirt
with a little bit of twist.

I like the bias on the pocket and the placket,
