All language subtitles for 5. VPN and DNS Leak

Well, VPNs, now I know in the previous course for the O.S., I already talked about VPNs, but I think

it's important to bring this up again, especially for people that are new to this course when you're

preferring Ozone.

And even if you're doing your day to day work, it's always important to have a good VPN.

Now, when things reasons for this would be on the ocean side, depending on who you're investigating,

you want to make sure that you kind of protect yourself.

So it makes it harder for people to find you.

And from a privacy standpoint, it's important to have a VPN because it does master traffic and it hides

your real IP address.

So when certain things happen, when involved, a data breach happens when you're doing open work on

Facebook or Twitter or any number of websites, and that data gets leaked.

Your your real data won't won't be part of that data breach.

So again, it is important to have a good VPN.

Now, when you think about VPNs, it's really important to do your research on them.

It's come out where certain VPNs actually didn't do anything, so it actually didn't hide the real IP

address and well, and there's other VPNs that will sell your data, which doesn't do you much good,

either.

So in general, if it's a free VPN, they're probably selling your data.

In general, you do want to pay for it and even paid ones.

You do have to be careful, do your research on it and and verify whether they're really legitimate

or not.

And there's other things to take into consideration, depending on what your threat model is.

If you're worried about getting subpoenaed and generally don't use VPNs in the United States or other

countries where the United States are particularly friendly with and could simply subpoena the data

over.

Now with that said, I do have a couple of VPNs I personally like.

I like ProtonVPN and I also like Disconnect.

So one way to test if your VPN is actually working is go to DNS leak test wsj.com.

Now what this does is a test if your DNS is leaking.

So as we see here, this is my external IP address and it says I'm in Livermore, which is pretty close

now.

If my VPN is working properly, I'm just going to click on here.

And this is ProtonVPN, by the way.

OK, we're going to establish tunnel here.

Sino IP and connected.

So if your VPN is working properly, it should tell you you're from a different location, unless for

some reason you chose the same location on your VPN site.

So I'm going to refresh the site here.

It should give me a different location, and since hello from United States, it's not even sure where

I am United States, which is fine for me because it makes it even more difficult to figure out where

I am.

And as you see, my IP changed here.

And the same thing is for tours.

So tour by itself, you don't need to run the VPN perfect.

You shouldn't run a VPN with Tor if you're worried about staying anonymous.

The real quick briefing on that is.

The reason why Tor traffic is difficult to figure out who's who is because one, it's encrypted traffic.

It goes through a random exit node.

And also, if you're doing things like canvas or if you're looking at the browser itself, as long as

you don't maximize browser as you don't add additional plug ins as long as you're not using VPN, all

that traffic looks exactly the same.

So every other Tor user is going to look just like your traffic, so it makes it that much harder to

figure out who you are.

Now, with that said, let's take a quick look here.

I'm just going to turn off the VPN here.

It's great, I mean, the same thing, unless I closed my Tor browser and start it back up again, so

again for the VPN, especially before you begin your own investigation, make sure you're VPNs on and

it's working.

And real quick tests I like to do is DNS leak dot com.

And to make sure that that my DNS is being leaked out before I start my investigation.
