I had to let my father go.

passed the 2 million mark
in sales recently.

I wanted to do it on my own.

[Jimmy] Even with all
the success of Control,

I don't think she was able
to escape Michael's shadow.

that I wound up
getting together with René.

[René] Watch out, Jan,
it's going to close in on you!

aspirations of something

that they wanted to accomplish.

he asked me to marry him.

of her back

that you just didn't cross René.

is proving she's a performing
powerhouse in her own right.

By winning eight Billboard
magazine awards yesterday

for her smash hit album
Rhythm Nation 1814.

[Rebbie] You couldn't even drive
down the street.

Every news network
you could think of was there.

[fans] We want Janet!

We want Janet!

[Rebbie] I'm very proud of her.

My baby sister,

she's the kind of person
that knows

what she wants to do

and how she's going to do it.

Today we honour Janet Jackson,

a young woman
who has richly earned

all of the applause,
all of the tributes

that you can give her.

actually broke

Thriller's record.

It's the only album in history
to have seven top five singles.

I was at the point
where I could stand on my own.

With my career in the industry.

Janet Jackson has left
A&M Records,

to sign with the British
based Virgin label,

for a sum rumoured to be
between $40 and $50 million.

[René] Look at this, Jan!

[anchor] Virgin Chief,
Richard Branson,

likened her to a Rembrandt

that had suddenly
become available.

- Yeah, I'm getting in.
- Yeah.

[light music]

[Jimmy] After the success
of Rhythm Nation,

it was a bidding war.

[laughs]

This is, oh, man!

[Jimmy] Her contract was up
with A&M Records,

and so all the major labels

wanted Janet at that point.

[René] Are you having fun, Jan?

Yeah, this is great.

[Jimmy] When she chose
to sign with Virgin,

she became the highest paid
recording artist, ever.

And it was a bargain.
[laughs]

- What a great landing!
- Right.

She had the freedom to do
whatever she wanted to do,

she was there.

[indistinct chatter]

With all the expectations
and all the pressures

and the multi-million-dollar
contract

and all of those things,

the question was asked,
"What do you do next?"

[anchor] Janet Jackson
is gearing up

for the release next month
of Poetic Justice,

the John Singleton movie
in which she makes

her feature film debut.

[Jimmy] I remember
there was some pressure

from the label,

because they feel like well,
we've given you this contract,

but you're now going
to make a movie

instead of, you know,
going in the studio!

But I think Poetic Justice
was something she needed to do,

to continue to grow
as an artist.

Dunk, it's like the first day
in school, huh?

[Regina] The first time
I met Janet,

I just saw myself in her.

She was just
representing all of us,

you know all
of the teenage girls

that are just coming into
ourselves and becoming a woman.

You know what a free is?

- Too many brother.
- [both laugh]

[Regina] She was huge
at this point.

It was a big deal for her,

at a time that
we don't really get to see

young black women
falling in love on screen.

Justice, I was thinking,

the real reason
why I love you is

because when I was indoors,

you wrote me
a lot of sweet poems,

kept my mind off the time.

[Q-Tip] I think the first time
I met Jan was

we were at the table reading.

Man, my first acting gig
is to kiss Janet Jackson

about twenty times

because we did
like twenty takes.

[romantic music]

Um...

[chuckles]

I mean, amazing.

What's up, man?

This is my man.

How are you doing?

Nice to meet you.
[indistinct chatter]

[Q-Tip] But what turned out
to be even more amazing,

was that I gained
such a great friend,

you know, for life.

- [indistinct chatter]

[Regina] Having Janet
and Tupac was huge

because he was one
of the biggest hip-hop stars,

and she was definitely
the biggest pop star.

I think they were both
impressed with each other,

but I don't feel like
either one of them

wanted to let the other know.

because you don't ever smile.

You know you got the role
every man in America wants.

Did you get to kiss her?

we have a lot in common,

the character and myself.

How she expresses herself
through her poetry,

which I feel I express myself
through my music.

What do you write about?

Whatever's in my heart.

And what's that?

I don't know.

[chuckles]

I don't know if Janet would
ever admit to it,

but there was a bit
of that chemistry

going on.

You could cut the air
in the room at times.

But she was in a relationship
with René,

make no mistake about it.

Start swooping away from her,
during the performance.

[Janet] I would say
out of all the directors

that I've worked with,

I really enjoyed
working with René

because he knows me better
than any of them.

[René] I know what she likes,
what she doesn't like.

And I know a lot
of the little sort of

cute things that
she's always doing

that I think would be
great on film.

I want you to get some, um...

what are they called...
spontaneous moments.

You are such a handful.

[Tina] Janet and René had
a really unique relationship.

[Tina] He admired her
as an artist,

and he had the eye
of a director.

You would think they would be
like the perfect couple.

We have been trying to get René
to direct a video

since I don't know when,
since forever.

[groaning]

You'll never do it.

When we first started
talking about it,

we wanted to show
another side of myself

that the public hasn't seen.

Something very sensual,
very sexy.

I told Tina, she looked at me,
she goes okay,

because it's different.

[Tina] She came to me was like,

"Hey, I was thinking

I kind of want to go
a different direction,

and I'd like you to be there
and maybe, kind of,

help me because..."

And it's like she's struggling
to get these words out.

I'm like what's going on?

And she's like,
"Just kind of help me with...

It's going to be
a little bit sexier..."

[light music]

René was one of
Janet's biggest fans ever,

like he really had her
on a pedestal.

He could see her in way,
I think that

others couldn't.

As a sex icon.

Here we go, playback.

[light music plays]

[Janet] Gary, the man
that was in the video.

He said to me,
"Do you have a boyfriend?"

And I said, "Yeah, I do."

And he said, "God,

how does he feel about all this?

Us kissing, and touching

and me putting my hand
on your pants?"

I said, "Actually, he's the one
telling us what to do!"

[Tina] René opened up
that new part of her

at that time.

But, you know,
he definitely had his opinions

of the way things should go
and the way...

the way things should be
for Janet.

You know what would make
this shot a lot nicer?

[René] What?

is one of the five songs

nominated for
Best Original Song.

[Jimmy] Poetic Justice
turned into a hit movie.

The song we wrote for it
got Oscar nominated.

[Jimmy] But I think, initially,

the music took a back seat

to the Rolling Stone cover,
quite honestly.

[upbeat music]

That picture was
an absolute masterpiece.

[Ciara] That was just one
of those classic moments.

It's true rock and roll.

[Teyana] She broke
that door down,

for all of us women,
to be able to be fearless.

If I looked like this naked,

I would be naked right now.

I was just jealous, because
I wasn't allowed to do that.

[cackles]

[Samuel] Everybody was wishing
they were the guy behind her.

It was like,
"Damn, where was I?"

I could be a hand model!

With everybody else,
it probably was no big issue.

But I'm talking about my family,

'cause that's not how
we were brought up.

because it's something
that I feel at that moment.

I mean I was happy.

Janet Jackson has scored

her third consecutive
number one album.

Has a sold-out concert tour
around the world

and 9 million albums sold.

The number one album
and three top ten singles,

and in that time,
a whole lot has been made

of the new Janet Jackson.

I think there was a point
in Janet's life,

like any evolving young woman,

that you get in touch
with your sexuality,

and you start... trying things.

She was in love, you know,

her and René started being
a little bit more daring,

and I think it just escalated
from that point on.

- [cheering]
- [upbeat music plays]

Janet came up with the idea
of bringing a fan on stage,

and the audience would
lose their minds.

There's something
missing up here.

[Tina] René would find somebody,

he would kind of talk to them,

make sure they weren't going
to do anything inappropriate,

and then kind of point like,
you know, pick this guy.

Do you mind if I sit down?

No, no, no,
I want you to sit down,

and I'll sit here.

[audience screaming]

It was kind of a PG version
of a lap dance.

Even I was like

I should be watching this,

this is my friend,
it's weird to see you like this.

Because I'd never seen her

[Tina] It was pretty
gutsy of her,

very, very exciting
for the fans.

They absolutely lived
for that performance.

She was reaching a very,
very high point, in her career.

And then, Janet is approached
by Coca Cola,

which is kind of a major moment
in the history of her commerce.

I was about to sign a deal
with Coca Cola.

They approached me, since
my brother's work with Pepsi.

They wanted me to,
to do something with them.

[David] Pepsi Cola,

of course, sponsored
Michael and the Jacksons

in the same commercials

they were doing
when Michael got burnt.

[alarm blaring]

For Janet, this mega
million-dollar contract

with Coca Cola

puts her in a different league.

It's the first commercial
she's ever done,

and for us to be a part of it
is very excited as well,

so thank you.

[Janet] We were actually
getting ready to sign the deal

with Coca Cola.

And that's when
that first allegation came out.

[suspenseful music]

[anchor] Details are emerging
about the police investigation

of pop star Michael Jackson.

This morning Jackson cancelled
another concert.

The 13-year-old boy is said to
have been friends with Jackson.

Although we have confirmed the
existence of the investigation,

we have not disclosed any
of the specifics publicly.

[anchor] Meanwhile, at
the Jackson family home tonight,

neither sister Janet
nor sister LaToya

are talking about the LAPD case.

[tense music]

[Janet] When that came out,

Coca Cola said, "No, thank you."

Mm-hmm.

Because of...

Yeah.

But that's the way the world is.

[dramatic music]

I was thinking about Mike.

It makes me miss him
as an artist,

but first and foremost of all,
as a brother.

There was a lot

by association.

I know my brother.

He didn't have that in him.

Despite all the controversy

surrounding her brother Michael,

the show must go on
for Janet Jackson.

She's in New York tonight

performing the first
of four live shows.

from Madison Square Garden.

Well, Jack, tonight's opening
number was titled If,

and that's appropriate

because a lot of people
are wondering

if all the negative
publicity surrounding,

Michael is going to have
a negative effect on Janet.

- [audience cheer]

[Janet] Yeah.

There's something
I want to tell you

it was frustrating for me,

but you can't let it stop you
and didn't.

You keep pushing,

forging ahead.

I just knew I wanted to be there
for him to support him

as much as I possibly could.

[Janet] If you would, please

just bow your heads

and just say a silent prayer

for my brother Michael.

[audience scream]

[screaming continues]

We wish to jointly announce

a mutual resolution
of this lawsuit.

[Janet] Michael wound up

giving money to the family.

He just wanted it to go away,

but that looks like
you're guilty.

I wish my brother really
would have let

the world know him better.

The time has come
for Michael Jackson

to get on with his life.

a long way to go

if he's to recapture the sort
of superstar status

he enjoyed for so long.

at that point,

and I got a call.

Mike wanted to do
a song together.

[Jimmy] Janet felt like
doing something together

was a way to help him out
if she could.

[Janet] We were in New York.

We were just like
throwing around melodies.

I said, "You write your verses,
I'll write mine."

Because I know
he had something to say.

What was your opening piece,

I just want to write yours down.

So I'm tired of injustice,

I'm tired of the schemes.

Michael turns into
the Tasmanian devil.

He's dancing around the room,

snapping his fingers.

He totally transformed

through a lot,

and I think it was taking
its toll on him.

to be a three-day shoot,

I forgot how long
it went on for.

It cost 7 million to do,

a lot less than that.

I shot days.

His record company

they would block off
his whole set,

so that I couldn't see
what was going on.

They didn't want me on set,

I felt like they were trying
to make it very competitive

between the two of us.

That really hurt me

because I felt I was there
fighting the fight with him,

not to, to battle him.

I wanted it to feel
like old times,

between he and I, and it didn't.

[dramatic music]

Old times had long passed.

[dramatic music continues]

This was
my brother's house, Mike.

I came here once, one time.

I was here with Jackie, Randy,
all my brothers.

[pensive music]

Mike came downstairs,

and we were in the theater,

and I said, "We wanted to talk
about you guys

going on tour again."

And I told them

I'd be honoured
to open... for you.

[dramatic music]

He didn't have much to say,

and I felt like,
"What's going on?"

This isn't us. This isn't
family. What is this?

[dramatic music]

And there were people that
wanted to keep him where he was,

where they felt like
they could have

some sort of control over him.

I was really upset.

Because we didn't
grow up like that.

[dramatic music continues]

And it upsets me to this day.

You don't do that,

you especially don't do that
to family.

It's those moments

where our family comes together
even more so,

to try to do the right things.

We had to show him that
we were there for him,

and we'll always love him.
Always.

My family chartered
a private jet,

and they came to the house.

It was a way of us
getting close again.

[somber music continues]

He had people
that were around him

for a long time,
but still, those people...

separated him from his family.

And that's when things
started to really shift.

I took some time off,
like two weeks in Hawaii.

I needed it, I needed a lift,

I needed fun. I needed,

no, I needed to be

drama free.

[music hums]

- [René] Tisch.
- [Tisch] Yeah.

Where are you going today?

I'm going to Hawaii, you know,
just for a little... rays.

There's René,
waiting for his bride.

Damn, you look cute.

[René] You look very cute,
I tell you.

We had gone to Hawaii once.

It was just the four of us,
I believe.

It was myself, Tisch,
René and Janet.

I had never been, and
I'm like, "Oh, my God,"

and of course,
you're with Janet,

so everything is first class.

[Janet] Tisch can't swim,
and she's in the water.

I can't believe this.

[Tina] She was in love you know.
Her and René,

they'd been together
for so long.

[Janet] René,
I don't want to leave Friday.

And for the most part,

for a very long time,
it worked really well.

[Janet] Hi, mother.

[Janet squeals]

[Tina] René came
from a background

of being a camera man,

and René definitely didn't have
that turn off button.

But without an off button,

it, um, it can take its toll.

I'm telling you...

Tisch, what's the favourite part
of your body?

What is your favor?
What are you most proud of?

Oooh, that was smooth.

[Tina] He drove me crazy,

but I was part witness

to why I think things
didn't work out very well.

Um, I just noticed someone
that I had known for a while

acting differently.

It took Janet a long time
to tell me

what had been going on.

René had struggled with

some painkiller situation.

[suspenseful music]

And this was prior
to starting rehearsals

for the Velvet Rope Tour.

[indistinct radio chatter]

[suspenseful music]

- Come on.
- Here we go.

[laughter]

[Tina] René wasn't on the tour,

so I was concerned

because he was
her backbone on tour,

and they were like this.

All the time,
he was glued to her side,

and she was glued to his side.

So, for him not to be around
on such a big project,

that's when I knew something

was not going well.

[anchor] Janet Jackson has back
with the new album

The Velvet Rope,

her fifth consecutive
number one.

[singing]

[Janet] The Velvet Rope
was the hardest album

that I've had to write,

I have gone through
a lot of self-discovery,

self-examination.
Um, a lot of pain.

[Janet singing]

I'm Gil Duldulao,
number ninety-two D B A.

I'm Janet's Creative Director
and close personal friend.

[Janet sings]

[Gil] The first time I worked
for Janet Jackson

was on the Velvet Rope tour.

[upbeat music plays]

[Janet] Yeah, Gil.

[Gil] I come from a hard-working
Filipino, Hawaiian family,

and I wanted to move to LA
to be a tour dancer.

And It just happened

that my third audition
would be Janet Jackson.

[applause]

My agent called me

and said I got the job.

[light music]

[indistinct chatter]

[Gil] I remember,
we were in South Africa,

and we went to dinner
with the dancers.

You know I could tell
something was wrong.

I just happened to ask her
one question

that really started
our friendship.

Janet, are you okay?

[Janet] The whole
René situation,

it started to get sour.

He was always constantly

on me about the way I looked.

"You have to look
like your video,

when you go out,
you have to look this way,

you can't go to the movies,

people are going to see you.

You don't look like yourself."

And I believed that.

[dramatic music]

[Janet] I'm an emotional eater.

So, when I get stressed,

or something is
really bothering me,

it comforts me.

And I'll try and do things

to pull it down, bring it down,
try to diet,

but I can't keep it down.

I probably would have wound up
not having a problem.

JJ,

you're excruciating.

[laughter]

When I was 10 years old,
I did Good Times,

and that's the beginning
of having weight issues

and the way I looked at myself.

I was developing
at a very young age,

and I started to get a chest,

and they would bind my chest,

so I would look
more flat chested.

And then there were times
when Mike used to tease me

and call me names.

Used to call me pig, horse,
slaughter hog, cow.

It wasn't out of malice,
on his part at all.

Brothers tease sisters,
sisters tease brothers,

and it was just fun and funny,

but then there was somewhere
down inside that it hurt.

When you have someone
say you're too heavy

even as a kind of love,

it affects you.

It was a magic relationship,

if it didn't hurt so much.

The control got so bad.

I always said,

"How did you write
that song Control,

and we all believe it,

and then you marry a guy,

and the control is so stifling."

[Janet] And that's when I said,
you know what,

I said I don't want
to do this anymore.

[somber music]

Today, Janet Jackson's
husband of 9 years

made it official,

and filed for divorce.

Now her soon to be ex-husband
says he wants his share.

[René] The Rolling Stone Cover,

those are my hands.

He did contribute substantially
and significantly

to the development
of her career.

This is what I want,

and apparently,
that's what she wants,

and so emotionally,
I'm okay with it.

René was a devastating loss,

and the divorce
was very difficult.

[somber music]

She's a woman
that has navigated men

throughout her life
in this business.

From her dad,

all the way through to now.

She continuously
suffers privately,
