I'm John Huston.

By chance I directed Marilyn
Monroe's first major film

as well as her last.

Marilyn had a strange, a
startling impact on the world.

Even today, across the
headlines of far greater events,

her gentle, haunted image
continues to appear.

There's very few stars
that are bigger in death

than they were in life,
but Marilyn Monroe

was such a huge star
throughout the '50s

that it's hard to imagine
she could become even bigger.

But she just goes on and on.

You can ask an old
person or a young person.

They all know who she is.

I was researching a film about
the 1960s, called "The Times

They Are A Changing," a
documentary I was making

and I was going through
the FBI archives

and I came across a new
release under the Freedom

of Information Act
on Marilyn Monroe.

And I started reading it
and I couldn't believe it.

Why do you believe
there was a cover up?

I think that her death
had political implications,

particularly in Washington
with the Kennedys.

The business of Marilyn
Monroe is extraordinary.

And you know there are
Marilyn Monroe collectibles.

There are books about
Marilyn Monroe collectibles.

There are books here of
her personal archives

that they've recreated.

Everything you want to buy
with Marilyn Monroe on it

is out there, lunch
boxes, you name it.

She's still as hot
as she ever was

as a piece of merchandising.

As a business, Marilyn
Monroe will never die.

I mean there is an endless
fascination in any kind of way

that you want to hang
on to Marilyn Monroe,

even if it's on your key
chain, you can do it.

We are at the Roosevelt Hotel,
in Hollywood, California.

Marily Monroe stayed here quite
a bit throughout the 1950s.

She would come here,
get away from the hustle

and bustle and
craziness of Hollywood,

and relax here at the hotel.

We are in what was known as
the Marilyn Monroe suite.

Back in the 1950s, this
room was a lot smaller.

What had happened
throughout the years

when they remodeled
the hotel, they

more than likely
have taken two rooms

and they bonded them together.

So it's a large suite now.

It's right across from the pool,
right out here on the balcony

and the pool is right below us.

And that's where one of
Maryland's first photo shoots

took place.

The Roosevelt itself has got
a long history of haunts.

And that there's even
rumors going around

or word going around that
the housekeeping staff has

a large turnover because
of all the spirits

that haunt the Roosevelt Hotel.

And Marilyn Monroe was one
of the more popular ones.

Yes, well the mystery
about Marilyn's death

goes on and on and on.

And, it's I guess never
officially, been solved.

There's many, many
questions about it.

And so people are
always intrigued

by an unfinished story.

NEWS REPORTER: Almost instantly
the lurid circumstances

of Marilyn's death made
headlines across the world.

And just as quickly came
rumors of foul play.

PETE HAMMOND [VOICEOVER]:
She died at age 36, 1962,

well over 50 years ago.

And we're still
talking about it.

We're still debating
what happened.

NEWS REPORTER:
Crowds of the curious

are held back at a
respectful distance

from the private funeral
that Joe DiMaggio

arranged for Marilyn Monroe.

After services in the chapel
of Westwood Memorial Cemetery,

in which eulogies and passages
from the Scripture were read,

the casket is placed in the
hearse to be taken to a crypt--

I remember it very vividly.

I remember seeing that
blazing headline on "The Los

Angeles Times" in August.

Marilyn Monroe dies and
I was at a dude ranch.

And Dean Martin and
his family happened

to be there vacationing.

Dean Martin was making a film
with Marilyn at the time,

"Something's Gotta
Give," which had

been shut down by 20th
Century Fox at that point.

But he was so devastated, I do
remember this even as a kid,

that he immediately left.

And everybody at this
ranch was talking about it.

I remember, there was a
news flash in Australia.

Marilyn Monroe, Hollywood star,
found dead apparent suicide.

Newsflash on the
radio in Australia.

And I was like--
who's Marilyn Monroe.

I mean, I was 12
years old, you know.

I think it was a big deal.

I think it's still a big deal.

One of the problems is
when the death happened.

It's 1962, and things were
very different during that era

than they are now.

Keep in mind, this
is pre-Watergate

and the press
coverage at the time

was very much non-intrusive.

So anything that was
a little bit dicey,

you didn't really dig into it.

People are obsessed
with Marilyn Monroe.

She was larger than life.

Classic, unfortunate,
tragic fairy tale of someone

reaching their peak in success
and then tragically being

taken away at such a young age.

The way she was thrust into the
limelight and her association

with the Kennedys and
with Joe DiMaggio,

she was the first big,
beautiful bombshell

that everyone just fawned over.

Madonna, Blondie, Lady Gaga,
every major female pop icon,

they all go through
their Marilyn phase,

because Marilyn has
stimulated their imaginations

and their image.

And it's quite extraordinary
the way they all copy Marilyn.

She created something that
touches something very deep.

My name is Greg Schreiner.

I'm the president of Marilyn
Remembered and the club

itself was found in 1983.

I fell in love with
Marilyn at an early age

because my parents had taken
me to see "Some Like it Hot"

actually.

And for some reason, her image
reached out of that screen

and grabbed my
heart and took it.

And from that moment on I
started collecting everything

I could on her, every poster,
every book, of which there were

not many back at that time.

It's interesting
right after her death,

things went dark for a while.

There was no books,
no anything published

really for quite a while.

But everything I could
find I researched her

and the more I looked into
her life, the more I guess

fell in love with
her, which seems

to happen to a lot of people.

The fact that this happened
to her was unthinkable.

I mean, when you get that kind
of blazing headline in "The LA

Times" even to today, that
means some big seismic world

event has happened.

She would have made
many more great movies.

She never made a bad
movie in my opinion.

There's a great scene
with her and Groucho

Marx in a very early film.

Is there anything
I can do for you?

What a ridiculous statement.

Mr. Graham, I want
you to help me.

I've a little sand left,
what seems to be the trouble?

The men are following me.

Really?

I can't understand why.

I think "All About Eve"
showed if we're going

to see what Marilyn Monroe
could become as a comedienne--

Oh, waiter.

That isn't a waiter, my
dear, that's a butler.

Well, I can't yell,
oh, butler, can I?

Maybe somebody's name is Butler.

Her scenes there with George
Sanders are just priceless.

It's a small, tiny role, but
it was in an iconic movie.

That movie won the
Best Picture of 1950.

And you can sort of tell looking
at that now in retrospect

that there is the beginnings of
a very fine comedy performer.

Addison, I've been wanting you
meet Eve for the longest time.

It could only have been
your natural timidity that

kept you from mentioning it.

You've heard of her great
interest in the theater.

We have that in common.

Then you two must
have a long talk.

I'm afraid Mr. Dewitt would
find me boring before too long.

You won't bore him, honey.

You won't even get
a chance to talk.

Claudia, come here.

You see that man?

That's Max Fabian, the producer.

Now go and do
yourself some good.

Why do they always look
like unhappy rabbits?

Because that's what they are.

Now, go and make him happy.

The dumb blonde image, I'm
not sure where that came from.

But maybe this movie that
she did with Cary Grant,

when she played a secretary.

Good morning, Dr. Fulton.

Good morning.

Aren't you here early?

Oh, yes.

Mr. Oxley has been complaining
about my punctuation,

so I'm careful to
get here before nine.

It's fun to see her with
Cary Grant to be sure.

These two major, major stars.

Marilyn Monroe had a very
smart intelligence behind her,

an innate sense of
what she was doing,

even in a movie where she is
really, really plain stupid.

All right, now say terrified.

Terrified.

Now say tissue.
Tissue.

Now say them both
fast together.

Terrified tissue.

[SMACK]

How dare you?

My name is Brian Chanes.

I'm with the Auction

And you know we're
the largest auction

houses devoted to entertainment
and Hollywood memorabilia.

Marilyn Monroe is
a one of a kind.

There's never going
to be another.

Her material, and
people clamor to it

and it's really
unsustainable as far

as there's no other
person in Hollywood

history that compares, period.

Oh, do you feel the
breeze from the subway?

Isn't it delicious?

"The Seven Year Itch probably
contains the most famous scene

of her career, which
was where the dress

gets blown up on the
streets there in New York.

Ooh, here comes another one.

When the movie opened they
had this gigantic blow up of it

above the theater.

That was in the days when they
really knew how to sell movies.

Basically we sold that
dress for $5.52 million,

which shatters the world record.

Say that again.

$5.52 million.

You know, it shatters
any previous Hollywood

costume record by any measure.

And of course, it's Marilyn.

So it's going to be a long
time I think before that

one this is topped again.

1926 is when she was born.

She would be in her
80s now, probably

late 80s if she had lived.

Can you imagine a
Marilyn still with us

as a senior of Hollywood?

A senior of Hollywood,
well, unfortunately, I

don't think it would be
as kind to her memories.

Because people love to
freeze frame someone

at the zenith of their beauty.

[SINGING] Having a heat wave.

A tropical heat wave.

And that's the first
image, oddly enough,

I remember seeing of
Marilyn Monroe myself.

They used to have this
thing on NBC called "NBC's

Saturday Night at the Movies."

And when I was a kid,
I would watch that

and they ran a lot of
Marilyn's movies on that.

They would buy them up for
national television exposure.

And that's how I saw "There's
No Business Like Show Business."

And I certainly don't
remember anything

about that movie except
that number, "Heat Wave,"

which was super hot stuff.

I mean, you know, we're
having a heat wave.

[SINGING] Temperature's rising.

It isn't surprising.

You certainly can, can.

What this is, is a Jean Louis
costume design of Marilyn.

I don't know if you've
seen "The Misfits."

Arthur Miller wrote
the screenplay.

Jean Louis was a
costume designer.

This is the famous cherry dress
that she wore in the film,

and it sold for over
$22,000 this last weekend.

Here's a picture of me
at my first movie premiere

when I was 15 and 1/2.

This is the only dress
that I found that I liked.

And it just so happened
to look like "Diamond's

are a Girl's Best Friend."

I had no idea that you could be
a professional Marilyn Monroe

impersonator until I
was at that premiere,

and Bernie Wayne who wrote
the Miss America song,

wanted to take me to Vegas
and make me an impersonator.

And I was like what?

Isn't this great though?

And it just arrived.

Happy Birthday to me.

[SINGING] A kiss on the hand
may be quite continental,

but diamonds are a
girl's best friend.

Marilyn Monroe was
born June 1, 1926.

She was an illegitimate baby,
and her mother, Gladys Baker,

was uncertain of
who the father was.

On her birth
certificate, Marilyn

was Norma Jeane
Mortenson, but she

grew up as Norma Jeane Baker.

Ida and Albert Bolander
were her foster parents

for the first eight
years in a tiny house

in Hawthorne, California.

The thing she didn't have
was a permanent home.

And she didn't have a permanent
family because her mother was

her only family and her
mother unfortunately

was committed to an
institution for most

of Marilyn's early life.

So she really never
had a real mother,

but she certainly had some,
I think fairly wonderful

foster mothers that
really did care,

they weren't horror stories.

So she had a good upbringing.

But I suspect even that
isn't quite the same

as having your own real family.

She wanted to
work really, really

hard doing something that she
had a chance of succeeding in.

And growing up in Hollywood,
she was right here

in the middle of all of that.

And I think that's really what
kept her going when she was

at Hollygrove at the orphanage
was being able to look

at the RKO water tower and
the gates of the studios

right there, and to
have that dream to hold

on to when she was
feeling so ugly

and her clothes were scratchy.

And she had to wash dishes
for hours every night.

She felt like little
Cinderella, you know.

MARILYN MONROE: I used to
sit up in the window and cry,

because I'd look
over and I'd see RKO

and I knew my mother
had worked there.

She'd been a cutter there.

What we've read
about her in the books

is sort of the way she was.

She was a fairly
naive young girl

who had great hopes and
aspirations for her life,

but didn't see any
way to achieve that.

And of course we know
then from the story later

that she's discovered
working at an airplane plant

and gets on the
cover of a magazine,

and the rest is history.

After that people just
started noticing her.

I first met Marilyn,
she was living on Doheny.

She was a wonderful
influence in my life.

Everything was
perfect about her.

She was just an absolutely
beautiful human being.

Everything I'm saying
is really from what

I know personally from her.

I mean, look what kicked
off our relationship closely

was after we were set to do
that movie, "A Loss of Roses,"

which is a play I did.

People told her, like
Strasberg and people like that,

oh, yeah, what she should read.

But she didn't want to be told.

She didn't want to be
told anything, really.

She had a wall
against being advised.

Marilyn was an
extraordinary person.

She was so different from the
Hollywood construct, you know,

that it's almost
not recognizable.

She was intelligent.

She was well-read.

She loved the music
of Bela Bartok.

I mean that she
read Thomas Hardy.

She read James Joyce.

She read Shakespeare.

She was friends with
the poet Carl Sandburg.

In fact, he gave her
a set of wind chimes

that were hanging on a
tree just outside her door,

you know the night she died.

One of the individuals who
let's say it gets short shrift

is Jim Dougherty.

James Dougherty, a gun
instructor with the Los Angeles

Police, was 21 when he
married 16-year-old schoolgirl

who lived down the street.

Now granted, it was more of
a marriage of convenience,

him doing her a favor.

Doc and Grace were moving to
Huntington, West Virginia where

Doc was being transferred, and
Norma Jeane was going to have

to go back to an orphanage.

Grace told this to my mother.

And she was a little
big for an orphanage.

So my mother and
Grace decided it

might be a good idea if Norma
Jeane and I got married.

She was cute.

She was sweet.

War is coming.

Who knows what's
going to be happening.

A lot of people were marrying
very quickly at the time.

So Marilyn marries basically
her next door neighbor.

Didn't quite work out.

Romance that thrills the world,
the marriage of Marilyn Monroe

and Joe DiMaggio
attracts a record crowd

to the San Francisco court
where the ceremony is performed.

While DiMaggio
stayed alone in Tokyo,

Marilyn went on to entertain
the troops in Korea.

Waves of frenzied
approval greeted her.

It was, she said,
like an embrace.

[CHEERING]

She married, of course, Joe
DiMaggio, the very famous

baseball player, and then
a very famous playwright,

Arthur Miller.

Miss Monroe, could you tell
us what kind of a wedding

you're going to have?

Very quiet.

Do you feel
certain at this time

that you will be able to
get away to go to England?

I feel certain I'm going
to try awfully hard.

In the event that you
are not able to go,

will Miss Monroe still go?

Oh, sure.

She's got to go.

She's got a contract to go.

That means you may not have
a honeymoon together then.

I think we will.

I hope so.

And then even, is rumored
to have had quite the affair

with the President
of the United States,

John F. Kennedy and even
his brother, Robert Kennedy,

who was Attorney General.

'73, when Mailer's
book came out,

I believe that was
possibly the first

in print connection between
Marilyn and the Kennedy family.

And so all of a sudden
for me at the time,

it was like oh my god, these
two people that I really like,

they actually knew each
other. '75, Earl Wilson

came out with an article saying
that, yeah, the rumors are

true, that Marilyn
had been romantically

involved with the president.

From that point on,
every single book

that has come out,
either on the Kennedy

family or Marilyn Monroe,
they're forever interlinked,

I'll tell you it's
a real challenge,

painting the most beautiful
woman in the world

and trying to improve
on the photograph.

I can't imagine anyone
with a more perfect face.

I just think that
she was so beautiful,

and she projected
this vulnerability

and this softness.

And I just think that everybody
wanted a piece of her.

Everybody wanted something,
to touch her, to kiss her,

to hold her, to possess
her, or producers

want her in the movies
to make money off of her.

And I think she was
a very giving person,

but at a certain point,
I think she felt that she

was being passed around.

And I think that Jack Kennedy
to Bobby Kennedy if she really

loved Jack, the next thing
you know, he fixes her up

with his brother, something
like that could have been very

traumatic, where she couldn't
go public with the affair

because they're both married men
and Catholics and one of them

is the President of
the United States.

I used to work for
Senator George Smathers

of Florida, who
called himself, John

F. Kennedy as his best friend.

And I think he was.

And he talked about
it all the time.

So I was very early
hearing about this affair.

People got very involved
with her, especially people

in some sense of
authority, that she

felt were trustworthy people,
and they would turn out

not to be trustworthy at all.

Her natural hair color was--

Brown, brown color.

My name is Jimmy Morrisey
and I met Marilyn Monroe

through Gloria Lovell,
Frank Sinatra's secretary,

when she came out after
divorcing Arthur Miller.

She had done modelling
as a reddish brown.

But she gradually lightened it.

And it the more
she lightened it,

it seemed the more parts
that she would get.

So she finally became
a platinum blonde.

And I did Marilyn's
hair two times

when she's going with the
president and two times

when she was going with
the president's brother.

And when she was on the
phone with the president,

she would always
call him that man.

And so when she finished
talking and I finished her hair,

Gloria later said to me,
you know who that man is,

don't you?

And I said, well I figure
it's the president.

And she said, yes.

Her most famous film
appearance could well

be when she sang Happy
Birthday to John F. Kennedy,

and that piece of
film is truly iconic.

Happy Birthday, Mr. President.

Mr. President, the
late Marilyn Monroe.

[APPLAUSE]

[SINGING] Happy Birthday--

To look at her that night,
you would think there

was absolutely nothing wrong.

You look at this woman who seems
at the height of her powers

during that, and now that we
know in retrospect that there

was much more to
this relationship

with the president,
it's quite interesting.

Everybody, Happy Birthday.

They had to keep
announcing her.

Here's Marilyn Monroe.

Here's Marilyn Monroe.

And they finally announced,
here's the late Marilyn Monroe.

Six months later, she was
the late Marilyn Monroe,

because her death
happened in August.

It is my conclusion that
the death of Marilyn Monroe

was caused by a
self-administered overdose

of sedative drugs and
that the mode of death

is probable suicide.

Sometimes cliches are accurate.

And one cliche is this
account of her death

has more holes in it than
a piece of Swiss cheese.

The focus at that time was
on the tragedy, on the loss.

And everything that had
been put out officially

was accepted straightforward.

But we had no suicide note.

In fact, an hour before
her death according

to Eunice Murray, her
housekeeper companion,

she was in a terrific mood.

Fortunately, we have firsthand
accounts from eye witnesses.

There is no statute of
limitations for murder.

The coroner put down
probable suicide.

I have signed off on death
certificates, 16,000 autopsies

that I've done myself.

I have never seen
probable suicide.

That word probable tells
me more than 1,000 words

could possibly explain
about the great doubt

that existed in their minds.

There was a biochemical
problem here.

She could not have raised
her blood toxicity level

to the point that we saw in the
time in the toxicology report

by gobbling pills
because you just can't

get there without dying first.

The people who
make Nembutal said

you can't eat enough of these
pills to do that to your blood.

You'll be lying on the
floor with your eyes

glazed over first.

You're about a third of the way
there, you'll already be dead.

Piecing together the
facts of her death

is a very difficult task.

It requires all of the testimony
from witnesses who appeared

in dozens of different news
shows and documentaries

for over 30 years.

Witnesses range from
cops to wire tappers,

from Marilyn
Monroe's housekeeper,

to the coroner and
deputy district attorney,

from police chiefs to a
nephew of one of the biggest

mob bosses of all time.

Some who lied at first changed
their stories over the years.

Basically the
normal thing would

have been for Theodore
Curphey as coroner, to call

for a grand jury investigation.

But he didn't.

We had Jack Clemmons
speak, who was

the first officer on the
scene the night of her death.

And he was the one
that arrived at,

I believe 3:00 something
in the morning,

and found her body
laying on the bed.

My name is Jack Clemmons.

On the night
Marilyn Monroe died,

I was a sergeant on the Los
Angeles police department.

I was the watch commander
in West LA Division.

And he personally felt that
there were some very unusual

things that were
happening that night,

including the fact that her
housekeeper, Eunice Murray,

was doing the laundry
when he arrived.

He found that highly unusual,
that she'd be doing something

like that when, number
one, at this point

they hadn't determined
how she died,

and so one would
think you wouldn't

want to be messing with any
of the laundry at that point.

Eunice Murray was
the one that Greenson

sent to be her housekeeper.

But she was a spy.

He didn't admit to
the club that he felt

that she had been murdered.

Dr. Greenson was there at
the time when he arrived

and it just felt to him like
there was something amiss.

Greenson wasn't
acting like you would

expect someone to act who had
had a patient who just died.

Clemmons didn't believe that
Marilyn had taken an overdose.

There was no glass or water
to swallow all the pills.

The caps were neatly
placed on the bottles.

The body looked
staged on the bed.

There are two things at
the scene that disturb me.

One was the time element
between the discovery

of the body and the call
to the police station.

As I was told, the housekeeper
had discovered Marilyn's body

at approximately
11:30 or midnight

but they had not phoned the
police until about 4:30 AM.

I was told by Doctor
Greenson that this

was because they had checked
with the publicity department

at the studio.

That didn't make much sense,

Her doctors, who were
stupid, they were incompetent,

they were ignorant.

Well, Ralph Greenson
was considered

one of the top
people in the field

of psychology and psychoanalysis
in tne entire world.

Yes, that's wonderful.

But because of that, does he
spend eight to nine hours a day

with his client?

And does he invite his client
to have dinner with him

and his family all the time?

I don't think so.

I don't think any psychiatrist
in their right mind

would do that.

The other thing that would
have obviously occurred had

the situation been as it
had represented to me,

was if there would have been
vomit from her because you

simply cannot swallow that much
barbiturates without throwing

some of it up later on.

It makes-- has a very volatile
reaction in the stomach.

Therefore, she could
only have gotten it

through another method.

For years, there's
been claims of Bobby

Kennedy visiting Marilyn
Monroe on the day of her death.

This idea was promoted
in a BBC documentary.

The political enemies
of the Kennedys,

including Jimmy Hoffa,
reserved a special distaste

for Robert Kennedy
as Attorney General

Chief of Law Enforcement.

Hoffa heard rumors
that the younger

Kennedy had himself now become
involved with Marilyn Monroe.

It was difficult
to prove at first,

but early on, we had the
statement of Deborah Gould,

an ex-wife of
President Kennedy's

brother-in-law, Peter
Lawford, that she

reported what Peter told her.

She wasn't an
eyewitness herself.

Deborah Gould,
Lawford's former wife,

says the stories were true.

Deborah Gould was told by
Peter Lawford Kennedy did

visit Marilyn that afternoon.

Marilyn was, from
what Peter told me,

knew then that it was over.

That was it, over, final.

He got really nitty
gritty with her.

And he told her that
he had to leave her.

Too many people watching them,
Hoover, the FBI, Hoffa, and she

was never to call him again.

A problem with
that information was

that Bobby Kennedy had an
alibi establishing that he

wasn't in LA on that day.

That alibi came into question
when I found a certain document

declassified by the FBI.

I was going through
the FBI archives

and I came across a new
release under the Freedom

of Information Act
on Marilyn Monroe.

And I started reading it
and I couldn't believe it.

So I called my editor at
the "Sydney Morning Herald"

and I said, I'm
not sure what this

is but I found an FBI memo
implicating Robert Kennedy

in the death of Marilyn.

And they said, hang
on, where are you?

And I said, I'm inside
the FBI archive.

They said, can you fax this
to us, e-mail it to us?

I said yes.

I did that pretty quickly and
they got their lawyers there.

There were like four lawyers
involved almost instantly.

So they said, we're going to go
with this as a front page story

because this is news.

And this is the first time
this has been revealed.

So it was a startling memo.

And the next day it was
world wide, front page,

London, Moscow, New York, LA,
the whole world, this story

was out.

NEWS REPORTER: Attorney General
Robert F. Kennedy and his wife

arrive in Tokyo
for a Japanese good

will visit on
behalf of President

Kennedy's New Frontier program.

Under the Freedom
of Information Act,

the US government is compelled
to release classified documents

after a certain period of time.

It's a startling
document, particularly

when you see on it who read it.

It had been read by numerous top
officials of the FBI, numerous.

And then it had been buried.

The significant thing to me,
apart from the fact that it

exists, was that it had been
basically banned, not released,

until I found it again.

Someone had seen it in the '80s.

I don't remember the exact date.

It's on the document
someone had seen it

and then it had been put back
into the file and not released.

Look at the statement that
John Bates gave to the BBC.

He says that RFK was visiting
him at the Bates Ranch that day

near San Francisco.

Note how long he pauses when
asked about Bobby's reaction

to Marilyn's death.

BBC REPORTER: Were
you with Bobby when

he heard of Monroe's death?

Yes, I believe we picked
it up on the radio.

BBC REPORTER: How did
Bobby react to the news?

Well, I don't recall
any specific reaction.

BBC REPORTER: Why do you think
that so many witnesses in Los

Angeles would have
told us and told

the police that Bobby Kennedy
was in Los Angeles that day.

I just can't speculate
on their misinformation

or their bad information
or what they think they saw

or what they think
they knew, but there

is no way he could have
been in Los Angeles

unless he had a twin.

Isn't it odd that two
key members of the police

department of that time, that
is the police chief himself

and the chief of detectives
would both have been

of the view that Bobby
was there if in fact there

was no evidence?

I'd like to cross-examine them.

I can't believe it.

I find it very
ironic, John Bates

who was the supposed
alibi for Robert Kennedy

is seen in newsreel
footage as the attorney

for Sam Giancana,
one of the most

powerful mobsters in America.

Why was he covering up
for Bobby who once tried

to put his client in jail?

John Bates' claim that Bobby
never left his ranch the day

of Marilyn Monroe's
death is contradicted

by one of the most
decorated cops

in the Beverly Hills Police
Department, Lynn Franklin.

I approached Olympic
Boulevard at about 12:10 AM.

I spotted a Lincoln Continental
diong about 70 miles an hour

eastbound on Olympic
Boulevard in a 25 mile zone.

I threw on my red
light siren and finally

got the car stopped
right here at the curb,

which is a mile away.

I walked up the car
recognized Peter Lawford, whom

I'd know for years, driving.

Seated in the back seat was
Robert Kennedy, the Attorney

General and there was
another man in the front seat

with Peter Lawford.

I asked Peter why he
was driving so fast.

He said he was trying to get the
Attorney General to the Hilton

Hotel to pick up his luggage.

He had to leave town.

I said, well, Peter you're
two miles beyond the turn

off point for the Hilton
Hotel and at that time

the Attorney General
said, you stupid ass,

referring to Peter Lawford.

Journalist Chris Epting
cites 18 witnesses who saw

Bobby Kennedy in LA that day.

You've got a neighbor of
Peter Lawford's seeing him.

You've got a neighbor of
Marilyn Monroe seeing him.

And the Mayor of
LA Sam Yorty, was

briefed on this by this Chief
of Police, Chief Parker.

Here's what the mayor
of LA told "48 Hours."

Chief Parker told
me confidentially

that Bobby Kennedy
was supposed to be

north of Los Angeles in
some city making a speech

but that actually he said
he was seen in the Beverly

Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles.

Where was Bobby Kennedy, the
Attorney General of the United

States on August 4, 1962?

Well, our records show
that he was in Los Angeles,

and probably that information
came to our intelligence

function through the FBI.

He was the Attorney General
of the United States.

He could have been
on an investigation

and we didn't follow him.

We just knew that came
in to the airport.

Another Police
Chief, Tom Reddin,

confirmed this in stark terms
when he implicated Robert

Kennedy, the Attorney General.

It was treated
as an intelligence

division operation.

And logically, it
could be so treated

because there was the
involvement of the Attorney

General of the United States.

Inspectors Gerry McGee
and James O'Hern always

protected Bobby Kennedy
when he was in Los Angeles,

but they weren't with him
when he left that night.

The BBC tried to question
them and reported as follows.

We tried to find them,
but one of them is dead

and the other remains silent.

Myth or fact, J. Edgar
Hoover hated Robert Kennedy.

And anything he
could do apparently,

myth or fact, to screw
Robert Kennedy, he would do.

We know that the
Kennedy brothers

wanted to fire J. Edgar Hoover,
but he had a lot of dirt

on them.

And there were accounts of a
meeting where J. Edgar Hoover

laid out all this stuff when he
was being threatened by Robert

Kennedy, his nominal boss.

And so he remained
head of the FBI.

Obviously Marilyn's
political associations

influenced the
police investigation

from the beginning.

I was a student
of Milo Speriglio

and he turned me
on to this case,

being that he didn't believe
she died of a suicide.

There was a lot of
contradicting evidence.

None of it seemed to add up.

And of course, he
wasn't the only one

that came to this conclusion.

The physical evidence,
the forensic evidence

acquired on a crime
scene has to be reflected

in the coroner's report.

There can't be discrepancies.

There can't be a conflict.

When a person dies, there can
only be one coroner's report.

There can't be two.

If there's two, there's
a cover up, Well,

Milo showed me both versions.

Of course, both
versions indicated

she died of probable suicide.

On this case,
Noguchi is overruled.

I mean, he is the coroner.

He's the man in charge.

He inspected her body.

They're overruling him.

And you got politics involved.

Noguchi later sent
organ specimens

for microscopic analysis, but
the specimens were destroyed

before the tests were done.

That is a part of
an autopsy, is doing

the microscopic slides
for diagnostic purposes

and evaluation.

BBC REPORTER: And why wasn't
that done in this case?

I don't know.

BBC REPORTER: Would you
have wished it to be done?

Yes indeed.

BBC REPORTER: And Noguchi
wished it to be done.

Yes.

BBC REPORTER: And it would have
been normally routine to have

made that kind of examination.

That's true.

BBC REPORTER: What happened
to the medical photographs

that were taken.

I have no idea.

BBC REPORTER: But they
seem not to exist anymore.

That appears to be true.

Why would Noguchi say that
this is a jigsaw puzzle

and there are about a dozen
pieces that are missing?

A dozen pieces he had and they're gone.

I should have called for
a criminal investigation,

but almost all the evidence
had been destroyed.

The police files are gone.

The official explanation, they
were destroyed in compliance

with departmental procedures.

Another big riddle
is her psychiatrist,

Dr. Ralph Greenson.

His first story to
police mentioned

nothing about Robert Kennedy.

In later years,
when others started

to there was a Bobby
Kennedy connection,

Greenson said,
this to a reporter.

Talk to Bobby Kennedy?

That's huge.

That's a huge statement
and was never explored,

explained, or elaborated
on by Dr. Greenson.

Many of his private notes
are still under seal

and will be for decades.

"Don't Bother to Knock" has
elements of her past in it.

Her mother and her
grandmother were

institutionalized
for mental problems,

as well was Marilyn herself.

She personally was only
briefly institutionalized.

Joe DiMaggio did get her
out of the institution,

but there is that
in this character

in "Don't Bother to Knock"
that she comes from that.

Even before you came
over here, I knew.

Every time you looked at me, I
wanted to kiss you, like now.

I did it with a razor.

You did that to yourself?

And you know, with her
mother and her grandmother,

it sort of ran in the
family of these things

can run in the family.

And Marilyn was probably very
affected by that knowledge too.

"Niagara," 20th Century Fox,
she did with Joseph Cotten.

She played kind
of a femme fatale.

This was the first time I'd
seen her do this kind of role

where she was basically
out to kill him.

And of course, it's
set at Niagara Falls,

and it really did have
a feel of Hitchcock.

It is an unsettling image
to watch now, knowing

what happened to Marilyn.

But I don't think
there is another movie,

I can't think of another
movie in which she dies.

And she's murdered
in that movie.

And so we do see
her laid out flat.

And we've seen those
images of Marilyn Monroe

after her real death too.

And so when you
watch Niagara today,

it is a little cringe
inducing, this beautiful woman,

cut down before her time.

And it's kind of creepy.

Her character in
"Niagara" is violently

murdered by a person who was
intent on getting rid of her.

In Marilyn's own
life, many people

do speculate that it wasn't a
suicide, that this might have

been something that happened
to her, that somebody

wanted to get rid of her.

Certainly the FBI
carried big files on her.

The CIA did too.

Marilyn was being watched.

There's no question about it.

And so when you see this happen,
and you see this character

in "Niagara" murdered,
when you watch it now,

your head has to go
to a certain point

where you think like,
well, what happened

to Marilyn in real life, and
did this all presage this?

Chopsticks.

I can play that too.

Shove over.

"The Seven Year Itch"

Don't stop.

Why did you stop?

You know why.

Why?

Because, because now I'm
going to take you in my arms

and kiss you very
quickly and very hard.

Wait a minute.

This movie was a
very big success

and really led to her
renewing her contract at Fox

and calling the shots and having
her own production company.

Because Fox realized
she was a hot commodity.

Your host tonight is correctly
addressed as Your Grand Ducal

Highness or sir, although as the
prince of Hungary, which he was

before he married the late queen
of Carpathia, he is, I suppose,

correctly entitled
the former Appellation

of Imperial and Royal.

I don't know what
you're talking about.

In "Prince and the Show Girl,"
again there are certain ironies

with Monroe's own life.

She plays somebody who really
does wrap this very important

prince, this very
important person

around her little
finger, and she

starts having a little
bit of control over what

happens in affairs of state.

But it isn't signed
Nicholas at all.

Of course not, darling.

You know, you have those little
conditions to agree to first.

Give and take,
darling, give and take.

Ah, that's right.

That will help you see it
in the best possible light.

Do you not see, you
pretty little dummkopf,

that a general election will
put the Kaiser's party in power

and there will be a war
in Europe in six months?

Well, I don't see how
you can be so sure.

I mean, well, what
if your party wins?

That's the funny thing
about general elections,

you never know who
is going to win.

She was not afraid to express
her opinion in her own life

and reportedly with the
Kennedys themselves,

she gave some strong opinions
on Cuba and different things

like that, and
wrapped them perhaps

around her finger just the
way she wrapped Olivier's

character around her finger.

These things sometimes
are so strange,

they seem incredibly
hard to believe.

But when you look at "The
Prince and the Showgirl"

and you see that
character and then

you see what we know of Marilyn
and what we've been told

about Marilyn in her own life
with very, very powerful men,

you have to ask the question,
is life imitating art?

She was definitely
engaged in politics.

She married Arthur Miller.

All his work is
political, actually.

It's kind of sad
that they broke up.

But obviously Marilyn
was a handful for anyone,

including the president.

I don't know why she
married Arthur Miller.

She doesn't know why she
married Arthur Miller.

Father figure.

I mean, how far-- he's
pretty close to DiMaggio

in that sense, as far as
being a father figure.

When she married Arthur Miller,
she converted to Judaism.

It was her choice.

He went along with it
but it was her choice,

her being supportive
of her new husband.

However, her doing that
really freaked the Muslims

throughout the world.

And they just decided
to abandon her pictures.

We won't show her pictures over
here in all these countries

anymore.

He he was a communist too.

He wrote for the communist
newspaper, documented.

Perhaps marrying Arthur Miller,
she was fulfilling a void.

She wanted to be
thought of as an intellectual,

because everyone thought
of her as a dumb blonde.

But in reality, pretty
far from the truth.

You know, she
could play it well.

She went to Mexico City
and she was hanging out

with a Vanderbilt
heir, very rich

American family, who was
a, if not a communist,

hard core leftist.

And he had communist
friends around him.

This was really
alarming J. Edgar Hoover

that she was hanging
out with these people

down there because
he knew there were

Soviet KGB agents down there.

Marilyn Monroe, what a prize.

She'd slept with the President
of the United States.

In 1985, 23 years
after Marilyn's death,

Eunice Murray, the housekeeper,
made startling confessions

and comments to the BBC, which
she had kept out of her book.

She did reveal in
this crucial testimony

that Robert Kennedy
was in fact there

the day of Marilyn's death
and in some kind of a fight.

Bobby felt threatened by
something Marilyn was saying.

Well, over a period
of time, I was not

at all surprised that the
Kennedys were a very important

part of Marilyn's life.

And so that I was
just a-- I wasn't

included in this information,
but I was a witness

to what was happening.

We've already heard
this from Deborah Gould.

But this is different.

This is the eye witness
account by the housekeeper

who was there.

Yes, Eunice Murray
contradicted what

she initially said in her
book later on in her life.

She may have not
felt comfortable

initially writing it in her book.

It's become very apparent
that the delay of five or six

hours after discovering the
body and notifying the police

enabled Robert Kennedy a chance
to get out of Los Angeles.

News reports later stated
it gave time for any written

evidence of the
Kennedy's relationships

with Marilyn to be removed.

See the public didn't really
know about any of this.

Nobody knew about the Kennedy
affair with her or any of that

or that Bobby Kennedy might
have been to her home that day.

This came out years
after her death.

I was supposed to appear on
ABC "Good Morning America,"

and they were flying
me to New York.

And then the producer
called me and said, look,

we're really sorry.

They're putting pressure on the
network not to run with this.

The major London newspapers,
"The Telegraph," "The Times,"

had all gone with the
story, "The Guardian,"

every major publication
had, France.

But in the US the press
was basically stopped.

And Philippe was scheduled
to go on "Larry King,"

and also to do "Good
Morning America,"

but suddenly those
two appearances

got canceled out of the blue.

And it turned out
that they said,

oh, Larry's got
some heart trouble.

And it was Maria Shriver who
was taking over his position

that night.

Very interesting.

And the next day, I find this
glass framed photo of Marilyn

popped on the floor broken.

The significance of
these separations

is that they were
used in the production

of the first calendar
produced by John Baumgarth

Company in 1951, featuring
Marilyn Monroe when she was

a relatively unknown
actress, in fact,

was not even identified
as the model that appeared

in the calendar itself.

The photo that this
calendar was based on

was taken by a very
famous photographer

of the time in the late
'40s and early '50s

by the name of Tom Kelley.

And Marilyn crossed
paths initially

with Tom Kelley
in October, 1948,

when he happened
upon an auto accident

that she had had when she was
rushing to get to an audition.

She needed cab fare
because her car

was disabled, so he paid her $5
and gave her his business card.

She called up and asked
him if there was any work

that she could do for him.

As it turned out,
the model that he

had scheduled for a
Pabst beer calendar

called in sick just that day.

And so he said, well, if you'd
like to make a few dollars,

why don't you come by my
studio and be happy to film

you for that or
use you for that.

It's basically, she was in a
bathing suit with a beach ball.

Now you can imagine in
1949, you're John Baumgarth

and you want to produce
a calendar which

is a tasteful nude,
but something that you

want to make a big seller.

How do you do it?

He hooked up with Tom Kelley.

He liked the look,
and so he asked

if Kelley could ask her
if she'd be willing to do

a nude photo shoot.

When I first asked her to
do it, she turned me down.

But after thinking it
over for a few days,

she came back and said,
I would like to do it.

I think was partially a favor.

I had done her a
favor once before

and she really did
need the money.

May 27, 1949, she showed
up at the Kelley Studios.

She would only agree to take the
photos if his wife Natalie was

present during the photo shoot.

And so they laid out a red
velvet rug essentially.

Kelley spent about an hour
doing the photo shoot.

Marilyn received $50.

Tom Kelley received $500.

The calendar ultimately
sold 8 million

copies, which made it by far
the most popular calendar ever.

It made Marilyn the top
pinup girl in history,

really in terms of sales.

But Marilyn only got the $50.

But it became legendary.

It's the most famous
calendar shoot of all time.

And it's before
she was discovered.

Since it was illegal to send
pornography-- they called

pornography back in the
day for something like this,

it had a little
acetate over her.

It looked like she
was wearing negligee.

It would cover her up.

But then you could lift it up
and see she was nude beneath.

Now, everyone knew
Marilyn Monroe,

and not everyone approved.

She signed the release
form, Mona Monroe,

in a half-hearted attempt
to disguise who she was.

Folks started to recognize
the image on the calendar

because it was very popular.

Well the Golden Dreams
photos, those could

have completely ruined her.

She was in a relationship
with Joe DiMaggio.

She had "How to Marry a
Millionaire" and "Gentlemen

Prefer Blondes" coming
out, huge movies

and having these ancient
pictures resurfacing

was a publicist's nightmare.

While the calendar,
of course, dogged

her throughout her
career in different ways,

to do the nude scene.

But for her to admit it,
I thought it was smart.

That was way ahead
of the time when

publicists suggest, you come out
and be up front about things.

She turned it into the, I
needed the money, you know,

the desperate sort of
angle on the thing.

This was a time when
stars were being hidden,

their private life being hidden,
certain controversial things

they may have done in
their past being hidden.

They arranged a fake
marriage for Rock Hudson

in this period of time, because
they didn't want it revealed

that he was actually
gay and stuff

and that would hurt his image.

This calendar did
cause some problems

but ultimately though,
you know, the whole idea

of a nude Marilyn and all
of this led to Playboy

and that famous
Playboy cover and that

really, not only enhanced
Marilyn Monroe's sex appeal,

I think, it made Playboy.

It made Hugh Hefner.

And then I learned from a
story in the local newspaper

that Marilyn Monroe had posed
for these nude calendar photos

and people had heard
about the pictures,

but almost nobody had seen
them because the post office

took the position
that you could not

send nudity through the mail.

And I was the kid
who didn't believe

the post office had that right.

I learned simultaneously
that the calendar company,

John Baumgarth was located on
the northwest side of Chicago,

very close to where I grew up.

So I drove out to North Avenue
in my beat up 1940 Chevy

and convinced him that it
would be good publicity,

and he sold me the
rights to reproduce

the nude image for $500.

I got a very good bargain.

Did Marilyn put
Playboy on the map?

Yes I think so.

There is some question
as to whether I would

be sitting here
talking to you if it

was not for Marilyn Monroe.

That iconic image of Marilyn
and its effect on culture

has been enormous.

Some very popular examples would
be the famous Seward Johnson

bronze statue of the
scene in "Seven Year

Itch" with her dress blowing
up, the painting of Marilyn

that Andy Warhol had done.

I don't think
Marilyn needed Andy

Warhol's help to
make her an icon,

but he certainly didn't hurt.

Of all Warhol's images
celebrating pop culture,

I think the one of Marilyn
is the Mona Lisa of our time.

Marilyn certainly has
influenced musicians,

starting with probably Ray
Anthony when she was still

alive, where he wrote a song.

And then after her death, there
was a few people like Elton

John, probably is the very
first with "Candle in the Wind"

to write a song that
honored the late Marilyn.

And I have even heard there's
a British singer out there

recently, Maxi Wild, who's
written a song about Marilyn,

which shows that Marilyn's
influence is still very active

in this world.

In "Some Like It
Hot," she did the song,

"I Want To Be Loved By
You" in such a poignant

and almost heartbreaking way.

[SINGING] I want to
be loved by you, just

you and nobody else but you.

I want to be loved by you alone.

Boop, boopy, do.

That probably is part of
the truth of Marilyn Monroe's

own life as she went on.

She just wanted to be loved.

And it's ironic that
maybe she never quite was.

You fall for them.

You really love them.

You think this is
going to be the biggest

thing since the Graf Zeppelin.

The next thing you know, they're
borrowing money from you.

They're spending it on other
dames and betting on horses.

The making of "Some Like It
Hot" is legendary though.

She was never nominated
for an Academy Award,

but she did win a Golden
Globe for Best Actress

in a comedy that year of 1959.

So Chuck, you're the
proud creator of this mural

of Marilyn Monroe.

I've always had a
knack for portraiture

and getting right to
the soul of a person.

That's really what a
portrait is all about.

With Marilyn, to me it was easy.

The mural by the way, it starts
with Norma Jeane and the stars

coming out from the side of her
head represent her aspirations,

her dreams.

And those stars are carried
throughout the mural,

kind of interwoven.

And if you look at her eyes,
see they're young and vivacious.

Uh, huh.

This look here is
just wonderful, clean,

sexy, vibrant,
beautiful young woman

at the beginning of her career.

Then you see the eyes changing
as her career changes.

And about the time you
get to her last film,

"The Misfits," the
eyes become vacuous.

To me that's the story of
this particular piece of art.

It's the transition
over her career.

I don't feel that
way about you, Gay.

Well now, don't get
discouraged, girl, you might.

So Arthur Miller wrote
the part for her, right?

Yes he did.

They were married then.

Absolutely.

I do know that by the
time that they started

shooting "The Misfits,"
their marriage

was pretty rocky at that point.

But I didn't know
that he was on J.

Edgar Hoover's watch list.

You know it's kind
of interesting.

It doesn't surprise me.

Her final completed
film, "The Misfits,"

is one of the most
fascinating aspects

of Marilyn Monroe's career.

You have Clark Gable,
as what turned out

to be the end of his
filmmaking career,

and you have Marilyn
Monroe at her most fragile.

The film had to be
shut down by director

John Huston for 10 days so
that she could be hospitalized.

She was taking barbiturates,
all kinds of things.

This was another movie that
we thought after

"Some Like It Hot," with all those
problems,

that she was not going to get through.

To make matters worse her four
year marriage to playwright

Arthur Miller had just
ended and the actress

was finding consolation
from a growing dependency

on pills and alcohol.

Well, a number of
years had passed.

She'd been through
the Hollywood mill.

A lot has been written
and said about this.

Perhaps the whole experience
was too much for her.

The pills became the
uppers and downers.

You know, she couldn't sleep
so you take more pills.

Now it's time to get up
and you've got to function,

so you gotta take some
pills to get over the pills

that you just took.

It's got to have a
devastating effect eventually.

She'd have to be
awakened in the morning

by another kind of
drug, a benzedrine.

It became obvious that there
was a problem because what

would happen is I would
hang around the hotel

after the crew had gone, because
we were about an hour out

to the desert where we worked.

We didn't have cell phones and
all that stuff in those days,

you know.

And so I would stay
until I knew that she

was ready to go to the set.

And the way I knew she
was ready was the makeup

and hair people would
come downstairs and say,

she's all set.

She's just gone to the bathroom.

And we're on our way.

I would say, great I
would get in the car

and I'd go on ahead
and go to the set.

She'll be here, just
a while, don't worry.

Doesn't show.

Doesn't show.

An hour goes by.

Two hours go by.

She's still in the bathroom.

So you know, pretty soon,
this gets to be old.

Every day this happens.

There would be fewer
and fewer hours a day

when we can work with her.

And it got to the extent
where it was decided she should

go to Los Angeles and spend
a week to get sorted out,

get over this.

There was talk
about replacing her

and Clark took me
aside and said, Doc,

you can pass the word.

They're not going to put
anybody else in her place.

We will wait til
she's able to work.

Because I'm not continuing
the film with somebody else.

This wasn't her fault. She
made every desperate effort

to-- so far as the picture
was concerned and she herself

but one finally had the
feeling that she was doomed.

She was splendid in the
picture, by the way,

this extraordinary quality that
she had, this kind of genius.

I don't mean just an
extravagant talent,

but something strange
and unpredictable

would come out of her.

I had the impression that she
believed what was happening,

that it wasn't a role
that she was playing,

that she actually believed it.

People called it a cursed film
because all of its key stars

had tragic ends
shortly thereafter.

Clark Gable actually died
10 days after finishing

production of the film.

He had a massive heart
attack, just boom.

So Montgomery Clift died not
long after, Thelma Ritter.

In fact, for the longest
time Eli Wallach,

who recently passed
away now, was

the only star, the
only principal, that

was still alive on this movie.

So was it cursed?

Just the thought of
someone as powerful as her,

as beautiful as her, and to
see her struggling mentally,

and struggling with the idea
that she didn't think she

was as good as she was,
or was as deserving.

She was always seeking.

That's just sad, where she
couldn't really truly be happy.

Yes, well it was very sad.

They were not treating her right.

The studio just used her
and used her until-- I mean,

it's an old story,
you know, all the way

back through Hollywood history.

But she wasn't grossly depressed
and going through that kind

of a thing, exactly.

No, Marilyn didn't
intend to kill herself.

Marilyn's become
a myth, a goddess,

an almost unreal creature.

And I think there's a
lot of reasons for that.

Partly I think it's
due to the fact

that she represents an era
that does not exist anymore.

Although the '50s
is clearly a time

of very real
political repression

and social and
sexual repression,

you can see those early
signs of changing values.

And Monroe was
clearly part of that.

She is buried at
Westwood Cemetery.

I will be buried as well in the
vault immediately next to hers.

I feel such a kinship and
close connection for all

that she's meant to all of
us, but most especially to me.

The fact that I will be residing
through eternity next to her

seemed very appropriate.

In '93, they wanted
to reopen her case

and Milo was really
pushing hard for it.

He believed the CIA
had her murdered.

Milo Speriglio is
a private investigator

who has written two books on
the death of Marilyn Monroe.

He makes a stunning
speculation, that Marilyn Monroe

was the victim of
a contract killing.

It was agreed that
the city council of LA

would reopen the case.

And I believe that was in 1993.

And they had decided that
there was probable cause

to look into her case again.

The foreman in charge was
to make an announcement

regarding this new inquiry.

The very next day he
is fired from his job

and the grand jury that was
to be assembled was not to be.

When they kept a
lid on this in 1993

and killed the grand jury that
was going to look into it,

something was stopping
this investigation.

The truth about her
death was apparently

still a national security risk.

We learned why when
documents later emerged,

including the fact that
she had been wiretapped.

America's sex symbol,
a security threat?

Yes.

And I'm afraid it's
not fanciful, because--

It was anything but.

Here you had a woman
who is close to both

the President of
the United States

and to the Attorney General.

It became apparent
that JFK had been

telling the Marilyn
national security

secrets of serious importance.

For example, there was a
short memo to J. Edgar Hoover

from an agent explicitly saying
that Marilyn Monroe had asked

the president about the
results of a recent hydrogen

bomb test in Nevada.

This was at the height
of the Cold War.

Red flag.

Red flag.

Now Fred Otash, who was the
investigator of the stars,

admitted he had
tapped her phone.

I know the FBI had
tapped her phone.

I think wiretapping,
indiscriminate wiretapping

is very dirty business.

And I couldn't
agree more strongly.

I think that penalties should
be increased for those who

use wiretapping
without the control

of some law enforcement agency.

Marilyn was threatening,
according to these wiretaps,

was threatening to go
public with the way

the Kennedys had treated her.

And she was perfectly
capable of going to them.

She would have gotten a lot of
attention, going to the press.

I think, what we
know as the '60s,

started with the death
of Marilyn Monroe.

And the circumstances around
it started this cascade

of conspiracies, murders.

When Marilyn died,
which was unresolved as

to who killed her, was she
killed, the whole thing.

Next, very shortly
after was JFK.

We have a parade
of strange deaths.

The whole thing starts
with Marilyn Monroe.

And that's why I was
searching through documents,

Freedom of Information
documents on Marilyn.

I never expected
to find this memo.

Kennedy's preoccupation
had been to destroy

the power of organized
crime in America, the mob.

There's a lot of strange
things in this saga.

And one of them
is the following.

There's no question the mob
helped JFK win the presidency.

We know.

It's been documented.

Joseph Kennedy knew them, and
they really helped in Illinois.

What's strange is
then, JFK and Bobby,

he authorizes Robert
Kennedy to go after the mob.

Well, the mob would be
going, and they did,

what the hell is this all about?

We helped the guy get
into the presidency

and now they're coming after us.

Well this had a lot
of ramifications.

And a lot of people believe
even one of the ripple effects

was the assassination
of JFK himself.

It's a dangerous game
Bobby's been playing,

going after powerful
gangsters, while his family has

its own tangled
relationship with them.

From his father's bootlegging
days to JFK's relationship

with a godfather's girlfriend.

your recollection

at all of your history--

The Administration's crusade
against the mob back home,

is a slap in the
face, a betrayal.

It's the final straw.

In fact this is why Sam
Giancana's brother and nephew

called their book "Double
Cross" because certainly

from their point of view,
they were double crossed.

Robert Kennedy was chief
counsel on the McClellan

Committee, which
in the late '50s,

interrogated labor leaders
like Jimmy Hoffa and mobsters

like Sam Giancana.

When you are dealing
with organized crime

and big time gangsters
and hoodlums as,

we have to deal with them
in the days of Al Capone.

vice operations

down in Lake County, Indiana.

because I honestly believe

my answer might incriminate me.

Would you tell us if you
have opposition from anybody

that you dispose
of them by having

them stuffed in a trunk, is
that what you do, Mr. Giancana?

It is believed that Chicago mob
boss Sam Giancana, was linked

to JFK, that not only did
he help Kennedy secure

the State of Illinois
to win the presidency,

but it's also believe that
he was recruited by the CIA

during the Kennedy
administration

to help assassinate Cuban
dictator, Fidel Castro.

Some have suggested
that the mobster

may have been recruited to help
assassinate Marilyn as well.

Marilyn Monroe certainly had
links through Frank Sinatra.

And she knew the likes
of some Sam Giancana.

I always had a
question about her death

because it was a perfect
storm of people who

would benefit from her death.

There was no one
there to protect her.

You can't be the head
of the Teamsters Union

unless you're
approved by the mob.

It's a whole, big, black circle.

Hoffa wanted to
neutralize Kennedy.

He had a vendetta for him.

Kennedy had a
vendetta for Hoffa.

One of the most
important things

is to understand the role
of the mob wire tappers.

Reportedly they
bugged Marilyn's house

when she went on her
notorious trip to Mexico.

Here we have the actual
wire tapper for the mob,

confessing in detail
what he was doing.

What Hoffa wanted was me
to assist Bernie Spindel

in developing a
derogatory profile of Jack

and Bobby Kennedy and
their relationships

with Marilyn Monroe.

Peter Lawford's
palatial beachfront home

was the scene of many parties
attended by the Kennedys

and Marilyn Monroe.

Lawford didn't know
his house was bugged.

Fred Otash tells
us exactly where

those microphones were hidden.

They were placed under carpets.

They were placed
in the chandeliers

and in ceiling fixtures.

You have to look for the logical
place, to place the equipment.

You have to gain entry also,
by either picking the lock

or making some
other kind of entry.

As far as the wiretap
was concerned,

that's not something that the
Secret Service in that date

and time could pick up.

Because you could
wire a telephone

five miles from the locaiton.

You didn't have
to be right there.

Otash tells us
that Peter Lawford

came to him in desperation
the night Marilyn died.

He wanted help purging the
house of any evidence that could

be damaging to the Kennedys.

Lawford showed up,
completely disoriented

and in a state of shock.

One, saying that
Marilyn Monroe was dead,

that Bobby Kennedy was there,
that he was spirited out

of town, by some airplane
back up north, that they got

in a big fight that evening,
and that he'd like to have me

make arrangements to have
someone go out to the house

and pick up any and all
information that was possible

regarding any involvement
between Marilyn

Monroe and the Kennedys.

After Marilyn died, the new
owners remodeled the house

and discovered extensive
evidence of

wiretapping and bugging.

"The New York Times"
reported that authorities

seized the wiretap recordings
made by Bernard Spindel.

Spindel sued to
get the tapes back

and his lawsuit filing
stated the tapes

would contradict the official
story of Marilyn's death.

Some skeptics claim those
tapes never really existed.

Why then file a law
suit to get them back?

A book review segment on
"Entertainment Tonight"

provided a great breakthrough.

The book was written
by two relatives

of mob boss Sam Giancana,
his brother and his nephew.

For the first time, the world
was told Sam Giancana's role

in the murder of Marilyn Monroe
and the CIA's role in it.

Watch Giancana's
nephew's face and listen

carefully to what he says.

The untimely death of
actress Marilyn Monroe

almost 30 years
ago was officially

pronounced a probable suicide.

But an explosive biography of
underworld kingpin Sam Giancana

claims the mob boss
murdered Monroe

at the request of the CIA.

Today's inside story relates
another explosive chapter from

the new book, "Double Cross."

Blonde bombshell
Marilyn Monroe's death

in 1962 of an overdose
of barbiturates

was ruled a probable suicide.

Now the shocking claim has
come out that her death was

a mob hit ordered by the CIA.

In the book, "Double Cross," the
story of Chicago gangster Sam

"Mooney" Giancana, written by
his brother, Chuck, and godson,

Sam, Marilyn Monroe is depicted
as having scandalous affairs

with John and Robert Kennedy
and having access to information

damaging to the CIA.

Giancana's
relationship to the CIA

goes back to 1960 when they
asked him to kill Fidel Castro.

According to the book, Giancana
had men try to poison Castro.

But the Cuban leader had
all his food and drinks

sampled by political prisoners.

Even though those attempts
were unsuccessful,

the book claims the
mobster's ties to the CIA

continued to grow and the CIA
called him in to kill Monroe.

According to nephew,
Sam Giancana,

the mob and the government both
had Monroe under surveillance.

Everyone was watching her
because she was perhaps

a loaded gun waiting to go off.

Well once she decided that
she was going to go public,

the CIA said, we cannot
have her do that.

And the CIA then requested that
Marilyn Monroe be eliminated.

And Sam Giancana
accepted the contract

to kill Marilyn Monroe.

What gives this credibility
is that it's a confession

conveyed by a family member
with regret and shame.

It's entirely consistent
with the CIA report

that we'll learn about shortly.

At the same time,
Giancana hoped

to embarrass
Monroe's lover Bobby

Kennedy the attorney
general who was

hounding Giancana and the mob.

Giancana states that he sent
his assassins to Monroe's house.

They taped her mouth and
inserted a doctored Nembutal

suppository.

The dose was lethal.

A suppository was very
fast-acting like an injection.

There was no traces of
that sedative suppository,

so it was a well-designed method
of killing Marilyn Monroe.

The book claims that Giancana
did get evidence of Bobby

Kennedy coming to Monroe's
house before the murder,

but that the whole
conspiracy was covered up

by the government so
quickly that his scheme

to embarrass Kennedy failed.

This is also consistent with
what we learned from police

chief Tom Reddin, remember?

They treated it as a 100%
intelligence operation

and those operations
are highly secret.

And frankly, what do you
think the national security

consideration was?

I don't see any.

The UFOs and the Murder of
Marilyn Monroe... fascinating!

I've certainly read
accounts of Marilyn

saying that JFK had told her
information about aliens, UFOs,

and I think Dorothy Kilgallen
was involved in this.

James Angleton.

James Angleton.

James Angleton was the head of
the CIA's counterintelligence

for decades.

He knew so much that no
CIA boss or president

could get rid of him.

His lethal career is
brilliantly described

in the book called "Cold Warrior."
The Wilderness Of Mirrors.

James Angleton had
that incredible phrase,

and that phrase comes to mind
when we talk about Marilyn.

What the document says is
striking in the extreme.

But it was a former
CIA archivist

apparently who passed it along.

Keep in mind the
document apparently was

never properly declassified.

The classification
marks on the document

were never marked out
in the customary way.

And so I kind of have the
feeling this document was sort

of liberated, if I
might put it that way,

without maybe going
through official channels.

I think the reason people avoid
actually engaging with it so

much is that it's about UFOs.

And I think a lot of people
feel that their reputations are

going to be compromised or
something if they have too much

to do with that whole subject.

When Jose Belanos was interviewed
by Anthony Summers in 1983,

and that was 21 years
after Marilyn's death,

and he was kind of
a boyfriend of hers.

In fact they went to the Golden
Globes award in March of '62,

just a few months
before she died.

In the Belanos interview,
he says Marilyn told me

something shocking,
something that will

one day shock the whole world.

Now by 1983, pretty
much most of the things

that Marilyn could
have been privy to,

like plans to assassinate
Castro and so forth,

were already declassified by then.

You have to ask yourself well,
what could she have known

about that would be also
maybe suggested by the CIA

memo that was still
classified in 1983

and in fact is still classified?

Now according to
Belano's testimony,

he was the last person
to speak to her.

Yeah.

He called her about 10:00.

And they talked a little
bit and apparently she

told them this amazing thing.

There was some kind of
commotion at the door

that he could hear on the phone.

And she said something
like, well, just a minute.

Let me go see what's
going on out here.

And she just put the
phone down and went away

and never came back.

And later somebody just hung
the phone up without anybody

saying anything.

And that's the last time
he ever heard her voice.

The murder theory
is laid out here

in its most radical version
by a former secret agent,

working for the LAPD.

I gathered some
intelligence reports

from the Central
Intelligence Agency

and some other intelligence
agencies and to my surprise

when I was reading it, here I'd
found an intelligence document

written by the CIA
regarding this conversation

President Kennedy had
with Marilyn Monroe.

And at that time, along with
other documents I obtained,

I realized that this
was confirmation

that he was, in fact, telling
her the truth about this event.

And when I realized
that, I was shocked.

And it actually made me
nervous, because it's

such a phenomenal
event, it would

literally change the world.

What was the top secret event
that JFK told Marilyn about?

This really implies
something devastating.

It implies that the
Roswell incident,

the UFO crash, the famous
legendary crash occurred.

And JFK is telling
Marilyn Monroe about it.

The CIA's bugging this
conversation and freaking out.

Did this really happen?

Well, certainly the newspapers
of the day said it did.

And TV reports even now
still report this as fact.

Speriglio's document claims
Marilyn's wiretap recorded her

describing the visit
by the president

to a secret airbase for
the purpose of inspecting

things from outer space.

A reference to New Mexico
in the late 1940s points

straight to the
Roswell incident.

This document was
written and presumably

distributed on August 3, 1962.

the first thing I would do after
putting my hand on that Bible

and taking that oath

is-- I wouldn't even

classified files on the UFOs

because I want to know.

I'd want to know what
has been going on.

It's remarkable that
twice within one year,

US presidents have appeared
on "The Jimmy Kimmel Show"

to be asked about UFOs.

You'll see that
the show use canned

laughter to make the question
seem silly and ludicrous.

That's a frequently used
device to belittle something

that is really very serious.

We know that there are
billions of stars and planets

literally out there.

It makes it increasingly
less likely that we're alone.

Oh, you're trying to give me
a hint that there are aliens.

If we were visited someday,
I wouldn't be surprised.

I just hope that it's not
like "Independence Day."

Watch how Bill Clinton
answers the question,

an answer partially lifted
from a Reagan speech at the UN.

Think of how all the
differences among people

on earth would seem
small if we felt

threatened by a space invader.

That's the whole theory
of "Independence Day."

You're right.

I occasionally think how
quickly our differences

worldwide would vanish if we
were facing an alien threat

from outside this world.

My hand would
just-- it would still

be hot from touching the Bible.

And I would immediately race
to wherever they have the files

about Area 51 and UFOs.

And I'd go through everything
to find out what happened.

Right.

Did you do that?

Aliens won't let it happen.

We'll reveal all their secrets.

They exercise strict
control over us.

Now you know, there are a
lot of people that are going

to examine you facial
expressions here,

every twitch,
everything, and say,

and of course, so did you look?

Did you see?

Did you explore.

I can't reveal anything.

Oh, really?

Notice how uncomfortable
Barack Obama is.

First he starts turning
it into a joke one thinks,

but then he stutters
four times and actually

says that there are things about
this that he cannot reveal.

The chief thing
that happened was,

I ended up getting
the CIA document

authenticated by the
CIA itself in effect.

Because what I did was I turned
in two Freedom of Information

Act requests, one for
the wiretap transcripts

at Marilyn's house.

They said that they had done due
diligence and they had searched

and they hadn't found anything
in response to my requests

and so forth.

But if you want to file an
appeal, then by all means

feel free.

You have to do within a certain
number of days and so on.

So I did.

I filed the appeal.

The important thing is,
they accepted the appeal.

Now, the CIA doesn't
accept an appeal

if it's based on a document that
they don't regard as authentic.

I believe that when they
knew Marilyn was going to give

a press conference that
she planned to give

and stated that
the president had

told her about this classified
program and gave her details.

And this is like Edward
Snowden going public himself

and dumping all this
stuff on the internet.

This is what Marilyn is doing.

She said, hell, both
these men used me

and I'm going to bring
Jack and Bobby down.

Now, somebody on the other
end of that line, or somebody

heard her say that.

Probably gets back
Jim Angleton.

OK, there's no debate here.

This girl is going to
create a lot of problems

for us, because if it comes
out that we took her out,

they're going to ask questions.

How many other
people were murdered?

How many other people
has counter-intelligence

neutralized?

How many?

All it takes is just
one little leak and

the whole dam is going to bust.

I think she would have
opened the flood gate.

That's my heartfelt belief.

That she would have said
things that would have

resonated with people, not
just then, but decades later.

And it's tragic.

It makes me sad that she
had to learn certain things

that she was not entitled to.

She didn't have
to know all this.

And knowing the Kennedys,
well at least Jack,

he compromised himself.

And the fact that the
death happened hours

after Bobby Kennedy was there, I
mean, how could they have known

to coordinate in terms of that?

Because Bobby was being watched.

They had a tail on him.

Bobby was set up, perfect
set up for blackmail.

After Sam Giancana
died, his family

made a DVD video, a
film explaining what

Giancana's strategy was
in the events surrounding

Marilyn Monroe's death.

Sam's plan, according
to his brother's report,

was to murder Monroe,
make it look like suicide.

Then have the police find the
letters from Bobby Kennedy.

The Kennedys would be disgraced
and removed from office.

Sam opened the papers
expecting to see Bobby

Kennedy blamed for the suicide.

But Bobby's name
wasn't mentioned.

The Secret Service
had gotten there first

and swept the incriminating
letters from the death scene.

There's been a
lot of speculation

that perhaps Bobby Kennedy
wanted her killed or his hand

helped kill her and so forth.

But that's not the case.

Mooney seized this opportunity
to try to entrap Bobby Kennedy

in the death of Marilyn Monroe.

The Outfit could have taken any
time they wanted to literally

kill Marilyn Monroe.

They selected a time
precisely on the heels of when

Bobby Kennedy was there.

Remember when,
whenever there's a hit,

you've got to have security.

You gotta have people
that come and clean up.

You've got to have
people handle the press.

You gotta have people
to handle the police.

I mean, this is
national security.

And we're not
talking about rubbing

out some nobody in Hollywood.

I mean, she's an icon.

I am convinced that Jim
Angleton had her murdered.

There, I said it.

I do not hesitate at
all to call this what

it simply is, it is a murder.

And I do not hesitate at
all to further go and say

that a conspiracy existed
between the police department,

between the coroner's office,
and between the LA county

District Attorney's office
to conceal this murder

and pass it off as a suicide.

The Giancanas say this is one
of the saddest stories they've

uncovered in their
research, because Monroe

was merely an unwitting
political and sexual toy.

She became the
quintessential victim.

And as many tragedies as we
discuss in "Double Cross,"

I think she is probably
the most tragic situation.

You know, we can't bring her
back but we can remedy some

of what's been done to her memory.

It's a national disgrace
what was done to her.
