It used to be a school, a very good one.

in the carpentry shop, under the east wing.

He threw the contents on the flames

and it turned out to be some
sort of inflammable spirit.

The whole place went up in a tremendous
explosion and a lot of people were hurt.

The police were called in.
The boys were sent home.

The school closed down.

Michael was very badly burned.

And for weeks they thought
he was going to die.

To start with, he just lay there moaning.

Calling out the names of the boys
who slept in the dormitory over the fire.

Those who had died.

That's how I met Michael.

At the hospital, you see. I worked there.

I used to take holiday jobs
in various hospitals.

Anyway, we became friendly
and he grew to rely on me more and more.

So much so, in fact, that when it was time
for him to go home,

he had all traces of the fire removed.

as it used to be.
