First of all, I guess I got
to get you flowers first.

A tremendous amount of respect
for you and your success.

-Your story, where you've come from,

where you now are.

in the entertainment business

that have done so much
and continue to do.

I know it's, uh, a hard task.

It's not one that's easy.

Yeah, and you know, I think...

And I don't agree.

Self-deprecation
is also one of my things,

But I also like
to put on a show.

I know what people like to see.

-I know what they don't like to see,

and then they like to talk about
it for a long period of time.

-And so that sometimes works for my advantage also.

Well, I mean, look, I want
to start from the beginning

because there's a lot
that I know

and there's a lot
that I don't know.

Right? The world of Disney

and the success that you had
in that space is unreal,

monumental, right,
when you had your show.

I-I want to know
how that came about.

Like, what-what was the road
to get there first,

before-before we get
to where you are now,

just talk to me about
the beginning stages, right?

How-how do you get
the show that you got?

Well, it's kind of
a funny story.

I got cast for "Hannah Montana"
'cause I was 12.

So, a couple of girls
that I knew

that were on, you know,
going to school with me,

and we were on
the same cheerleading team...

-Mm-hmm.
-They were going to L.A.

to audition for Disney,

-Mm-hmm.
-and I begged my mom to let me go with them.

-Okay.
-So I went across the country.

My mom actually
wouldn't fly.

My mom was terrified of flying.

So we drove for three days
from Nashville to California.

-You and...
you and your friends? -My mom, my grandma...

So, well, here's the story.
So they went.

I went with them.
I end up getting called back.

-None of them got called back.
-Oh, wow.

So they weren't super stoked
that I went along for the trip.

Did that, did that affect
your friendship?

I-- at that point--

I was already going through
some bullying.

-Wasn't really feeling
like I fit quite in. -Mm-hmm.

Um, the arts
and kind of creative,

you know, I guess community
surrounding me in Nashville,

-it wasn't really
that strong, um... -Okay. Okay.

I think a lot of people were
kind of more okay

with just blending in,

and I've always wanted
to stand out and be different

and also be confrontational,

and I guess kind of, um...

just...

I don't think I fit in,
in the small town that I was in.

-Okay.
-And so...

it did effect my friendships,

but I think that was
kind of inevitable--

that I was gonna kind of outgrow
my town at some point.

Especially just because
of my political views

or my religious views
and, um, yeah, kind of being...

My-my granddad was
a Democratic state legislator,

so we were always kind of,
like, very outspoken.

Um, and so, yeah, it did kind of
affect my friendships.

What's the... what's the town?
You say small town.

-Nashville, Tennessee.
-Nashville.

But I'm from a small area
called Thompson's Station.

-Thompson's Station. Okay.
-Yeah, where my dad still lives

on the same farm
that I grew up on.

500 acres.

Surrounded by just,
you know, land.

When you talk about,
you know,

the outgrowing side
of the small town,

is there still love?

Is there a love-hate
relationship?

Is it just a hate relationship?

-No.
-Like, what's your relationship with Thompson?

I don't have a lot of, um...

I don't have a lot of hate
in my heart

-for kind of anything.
-I love that.

-Mm-hmm. I like that.
-Hate in my heart.

But, yeah, so my friends took me
to California.

I auditioned.
I got called back.

My mom wouldn't fly,
so we drove,

um, and I went back
to California again.

-Did another audition.
I got another callback. -You-you drove twice?

I've driven
from Nashville to California

so many times
'cause of my mother,

-(chuckling)
-and I have five brothers and sisters,

so we'd all pile in the car
with all of our dogs.

Um, except I loved
when my grandma--

rest in peace--
would take me,

because she would
let me drink Pepsi,

and I'm already super hyped

and I wasn't allowed to have
any of that.

By the-- when I sat down
on that plane,

that was the first thing I did.

I mean, if they would've
given me an IV of it,

I would have taken it.
Like, I drank so much Pepsi.

And then my grandma would
drop down, we'd go to the pier.

We'd spend-- I spent a lot
of time with my grandma.

My grandma,
who I have tattooed on my arm,

ran my fan club
out of my little kitchen

of my dressing room
my entire childhood.

Signed every picture, unless
she liked the picture of me,

then she kept it and framed it
and put it in her house.

So, here-here's
the question, right?

And this is,
this is the part where...

I'm more curious than anything.

You know, you-you say there's
a lot of back and forth,

uh, with you
with the callbacks and stuff.

You get the part for the show.

The show ends up becoming a hit
and success that it is.

Well, actually...

they hired someone else.

They didn't hire me because...

So I got called back,
called back, called back,

and then they said I was
too small, too young.

I had, I literally had,
like, four teeth.

I'm from Nashville. That's,
like, kind of a normal thing.

-(laughing)
-But I really only had four teeth,

and on those four teeth
were braces.

And I remember coming back
for the callback--

somehow I lost, like...

Give me a real number
of teeth. Like...

-give me a real number, Miley.
-Dude, I don't know

if you put up pictures
in the show.

When I show you a picture--

I had four teeth,

and the four teeth I did have
had braces on them.

-Okay. All right.
-But... I don't know

if you've ever seen
clear braces.

-Don't do it,
because they just looked nasty. -(laughing)

And my mom was like,
"We have to get the clear ones,

"because you're doing
all these callbacks

"and no one wants
to see Hannah Montana

with big brackets
on her teeth."

So she got me the clear ones,
but they were disgusting.

After all those Pepsis
with my grandma,

they were, like, brown.

And so then I showed up with,
like, yeah, with my four teeth.

And I remember them looking
at me, like, "What happened?"

-(laughing)
-You know, kids, you're just changing so much.

And, like,
every time I would come back,

something new
would have changed.

Like, now I've got,
like, cystic acne

-'cause I'm growing...
It kept getting kind of worse. -(laughing)

Um, and so then
they hired someone else.

They shot a pilot.

They went and showed the pilot
to a bunch of kids, and...

How long were you going back?
So, um...

From the time I was, uh,

probably, like,
ten, ten-and-a-half,

and I booked it when I was 12.

-So between two years...
-Two years of auditioning?

-Two years of auditioning.
-Miley, are you kidding me?

And not getting the part.

And then they showed it
to these, you know,

they showed it to kids.
They'll do those, like,

kind of screenings
and see if people are resonating

and relating to the characters.

So, the show was in development
for two-and-a-half years?

-Yeah. And forth.
-While you were going back... Wow.

Kind of like a... almost
like a "Ferris Bueller,"

like, "Max's Big Day Off."

So I thought for sure
I had got the role.

-Mm-hmm.
-So I kind of started, like,

wreaking havoc at my school

because I thought I was
never gonna have to go back.

-(laughing)
-And so, finally, I was like, you know what,

I'm just gonna go crazy.

All... I had, like, honestly,

I had like six boyfriends,
like, I was like,

I'm just gonna, like,
figure all this out.

Then they didn't cast me.

And then I was stuck.
Everyone, like...

I had just turned everyone
kind of against me.

At that point...

I was trying to
basically just make out

with everyone
that was at my school.

-(laughing)
-And I remember I had gone to Canada,

and someone had explained to me
what French kissing was.

And I came back and
I told the whole class,

"Guess what I learned
while I was in Canada."

And, like, I could tell, like,
all the teachers were like,

"Oh, this is gonna be great,
What did you learn

while you were traveling
outside of the country?"

I was like, "I learned
how to French kiss."

And then I wanted to show
this girl that was in my class,

and she went with it.

And then I got
in-school suspension,

which they put me in this,
like...

I don't know if you're allowed
to humiliate kids

-at school anymore.
-No, you're not.

-You're not supposed to...
-There was, like, a glass room where there was,

like, in-school suspension,
and I was...

I hold the record to be
the youngest child

to ever get suspended
in my school.

* Dun, da, da, da. *

-By the way, are you proud?
-Yeah.

When you say... All right,
there's this rebel in you.

There's this thing
that you have.

And you're aware of it.
You're not blind to it.

You're like,
"Look, I was... I was...

"I was a wild kid.
I was a bad kid.

At this point,
I was doing 'X,' 'Y,' 'Z.'"

Where do you think it came from?

Um...

Probably my dad's mother.

-Okay.
-Who, um, basically...

Yeah, she just-just lived.

-We'll just leave it
at "She lived." -Okay.

And she drives a lawn mower

like it's a car.

-Okay.
-Because she's not allowed to drive

because she's had
a lot of, like...

-She likes to drink
some alcohol. -Yeah, she had

-some trouble.
-So, we took her...

-She had some DUI trouble.
-They took her license,

but she's like,

"You don't need a license
to drive a lawn mower."

(chuckles): So she takes
the lawn mower everywhere.

She is usually in little, like,
white booty shorts,

which no one wants
to see their grandma in.

But, like, I... But love her.

And she wears these, like,
Looney Tunes shoes,

and-- which is very fitting--

and she drives a lawn mower
like a vehicle.

And y-you're... But you're...
You couldn't be happier.

-You couldn't be ha...
-Yeah. And she has all white hair

but, like, fire red eyebrows.

-And she only uses... (chuckles)
-(laughing)

She uses

the same...
She's used the same nail polish

her whole life,
which is periwinkle.

And, uh, last time...

The one thing that was kind of
really good during quarantine

was I went and spent
a lot of time with my family,

-and I learned a lot of things.
-Mm-hmm.

Like, I never noticed

the periwinkle nail polish,
and there was a whole story.

And, so, I...
I think a lot of us, like...

I mean, some of us
were keeping our distance,

but we kind of isolated
on this farm, which is my dad...

My dad's been isolating
on his farm since 1992,

and he kept looking at us going,
"Isn't this great?

I've been telling you guys."

Like, you know,
social distancing?

My dad's been social distancing.

-He's been isolating.
-He's been... He's been living a...

-He's been in quarantine.
-...a life of quarantine

-for a long time.
-Yeah.

-Yeah.
-So, all right.

So, then you get the...
You get the fucking show.

Like, you get the show.

Now that you got the show,
you know, this-this...

the rebel that once was

back here in Tennessee,
well, you can't...

-You can't give
that presentation to them. -Yeah.

But I was also...
So, as much as I was a rebel,

I also...

I think there was...

I never did anything,
even as a child,

-to intentionally hurt anyone.

-You know? So my rebellion...

Except the boys. Fuck the boys.

Yeah, these boys,
they-they deserved it.

Well, one of them told me

that there was a rumor
going around,

which now I take
as a compliment.

They said that he only wanted
to be my boyfriend

'cause he knew one day,
I was gonna be a big star.

But I didn't even know.
And my... Because I always had

a really low, raspy voice,
my drama teacher

-would only... (groans)
-(laughing)

...would only--
who I do hope is watching--

would only hire me as, like,
some old man.

Like, I was always,

like, the fisherman
with two lines,

where I would be like,

"Hello."
Like, "Welcome to my boat."

Or, like, something weird.

And, so, yeah,
she-she had it out for me,

and so she... Yeah, she made me,
like, the old, hairy man

in, like,
every friggin' play that we had.

Um, her son

was one of the boyfriends
that I was cheating on,

-so I got my revenge.
-News to you. Who got the last laugh?

-Yeah, I got...
-Huh?

I got my revenge.
But, anyways, so then,

no one really knew that I was
really gonna do anything

because she never
really let me shine.

-Got you.
-Except for one play, I...

We all got to write, like,
our own monologue,

and I did a...
I wrote a monologue

about, like, metamorphosis,
about, like, evolving

from a caterpillar
into a butterfly.

And I came dressed as the
butterfly and the whole thing.

And everyone started crying,
because it was like...

I think it was...
It was really...

It wasn't really
about the butterflies.

It was about everyone
that I could see,

and I could see, like,
the potential

-in my class, and, like...
-Oh, wow.

-I could also...
-I thought you were gonna say

-it was about you.
-I mean, it was about me,

but it was also, like,
I feel like that's a...

I really...

Something
that's really important to me

is helping other people find

-their fullest potential, also.
-Mm-hmm, mm-hmm.

Um, but that's something
in my adult life

that I've also had
to detach from slightly

because sometimes,
you can see something

in someone
that they can't always see

-in themselves.
-That they can't see in themselves. Yeah.

And so it can be
very frustrating.

And so you have to...

come from a place
of love and support

but not in a place of,
"Well, look what I've done.

If you follow..."
It's like, everyone's gonna find

their own place
at their own time,

-and...
-I just had this same conversation

-two weeks ago.
-It's so...

-With?
-I swear to God.

I-I just had
the same conversation

with Will Smith two weeks ago,

and Will Smith was talking to me

about, uh, giving advice.

-Mm-hmm.
-And how he's now learned

that the way
that he used to give advice

was coming from such a arrogant,

-uh, and cocky perspective of...
-Mm-hmm.

-I try to avoid advice.
-He-he was saying, like,

"I-I basically was giving advice
to say,

-'Here's how I've done it,
and now you can do it, too.'" -Mm-hmm.

Which is ultimately saying,

"You can do this
and then become me."

And when he said it,

a light bulb went off to me
in that time,

and I was like, "Damn."

You know,
I'm guilty of the same thing.

Like,
we had a real conversation,

-and it's all information now.
-I think... I think living

without expectations

and knowing that no one

-owes you anything...
-Mm-hmm.

That's been something
that has just changed

the way that I'm able

to express my compassion.

I mean, I've lived, like,

-so many lives.
We really all have. -Yeah.

-You know? Like, I feel...
-In different stages.

-Different stages in life.
-Everyone lives

in such these, like, you know...
in these chapters.

And sometimes, when you look
at someone that you've been,

it can almost feel
like you're looking

at someone that you don't know
at all, 'cause my life

is so...

I cannot believe it's my own.

I truly believe I'm one
of the luckiest fucking people.

I'm sitting with you in a
castle, drinking wine, laughing.

Everyone here is so amazing
for putting this together,

and I get to talk about my life.

And, like, my life is...

I cannot believe it's mine.
I feel so lucky.

So I have a hard time admitting

that I maybe need help
balancing something

because I'm overwhelmed

because I feel guilty
about being overwhelmed.

Because how dare I
for a second feel...

...you know, I guess, some sort

of hurt or fear, because...
Almost like I don't deserve it.

But I also...

have become much more

fluid and flexible

and way less concrete in this...
in my sense of self.

And I...

don't really have
a definite sense of who I am.

You said, like, sometimes,
you feel... you feel guilty.

-Mm-hmm.
-Like, you know, "Oh, my God. I have this life.

"I have this-this thing

"and all of these things,
and I'm so lucky.

Sometimes I feel bad
about feeling a certain way."

I wonder why you feel guilty
about that

when, yes,
you-you can attach luck to it.

Let's not... Let's not...
Let's not attach luck,

-because, of course,
there is some luck. -Mm-hmm.

But you just got finished
talking to me

about, uh, a consistent drive
from Nashville to L.A.

-That's not luck.
-Mm-hmm.

But, I mean, even when
we started this conversation

and you said, like,
"I'm really interested

in talking to people
that started..."

You said something like,

"Started at the bottom
and now...

-and-and made it" or something.
-Absolutely.

I really had a hard time
with that, because my brain

goes, "You wouldn't know
what that is.

-You wouldn't know
what that's like." -Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.

-And, again, I think...
-Wait, you say

-your brain goes,
as in the person... -My brain tells myself

that I don't deserve
that statement.

-Why?
-Uh, because...

I'm working on this,
but because I feel that...

I think that I've got...

I-I know. I don't think. I know

that if I took that moment
to reprogram,

which I'm doing now,

to have a moment of gratitude

that says, like, I...

One, my parents.

My mom got in the car

-and drove her child
for three days out of love. -Mm-hmm.

Not to be famous.
Not for me to be rich.

-Not for me to take care of her.
-Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.

For me to do what I love,
my mom got in the car

and would drive me across
the country for three days.

And then all my siblings
picked up.

Not only did I have to transfer

and leave my school
and leave my friends.

All my siblings
did the exact same thing for me,

for their sister
to go live their dream.

-Mm-hmm.
-And my dad,

who was kicking and screaming

the whole time
until he got hired.

Then he's like,
"We're going to California!"

But the whole time,
he was always like,

"I'm not leaving this farm.

I..." And, you know,
and then he's also...

He told me,
"This is gonna be a heartbreak.

"Like, you are gonna get
so many doors

"slammed in your face.

You are gonna have
so much pressure."

And I think that was just him

trying to really protect me,
but, again,

he went with it,
my whole family, so...

I think if I took that moment
to just acknowledge,

"You're right, you know?
Kevin just appreciated

that you worked really hard."
And that means a lot.

And then, also,
on top of that, the...

like, miraculous truth

that my family,
out of all the families

that I could have
come from the heavens

and been a part of

is the one that I have.

-And it happens to be

a dad who...

Our jukebox was just filled

with
female rock and roll singers,

-blues singers.

My dad... I hated Etta James

by the time
"Hannah Montana" was over

because my dad played it
every single day.

-And Stevie Nicks and Joan

and, you know. So my dad,
he celebrated women.

He celebrated...
I think that's why I'm so,

um, kind of steadfast
in the idea of what I want,

is 'cause dad
showed me Janis Joplin.

My dad would, you know,
watch Debbie Harry.

And so I have this, like, father

who never told me,
"Don't pick up a guitar."

-You know, "Go grab
ballet slippers or something." -Mm-hmm.

-Mm-hmm.
-He always said, "Go pick up the electric guitar."

My dad's left-handed. He'd had
me playing an upside-down guitar

-for my whole life,
but that's just very much us. -(chuckles)

And then my... mom, who...

Anything I wanted to try,

-like, she never judged me.

She watched me, you know,
bounce off my head

while trying to do
back handsprings,

and she took me to go
to all my...

My mom was just so dedicated
to her kids.

And-and there was five of us,

so she did that equally
for all of us.

My siblings were so selfless.

Like, if I could've just taken
that moment of...

to have gratitude instead,

it would've changed
the whole conversation.

I'm gonna tell you something.

First of all,
I'm-I'm no therapist.

Okay? Not in any way,
shape or form.

But I'm... From listening to
you, there's a lot of self-work.

There's a lot
of self-evolvement.

Like, there's...
And I can-I can-I can hear it.

I can see it.

I'm not a spiritual guy.

-I'm not, like,
overly spiritual. -Mm.

I believe that...

stars could possibly be...

picked.

You could possibly be picked
from the gate.

When you first talked to me,
you talked to me

about a small town.
You're talking about a farm.

-And you're talking
about "I outgrew." -Mm-hmm.

It was... it was already a
thing. It was...

"It just wasn't for me.
I was..."

It was in you
from the beginning.

-Mm.
-Whether you... whether you felt it or not.

I wish I could sit up here
and say

I didn't have
star-like qualities as a child.

-I'm not being cocky.

But I'm telling you,
as a young kid, I had it.

-I had it.

At a... at a event

when my swim team was giving out
awards and trophies,

-I was the worst swimmer.
-(chuckles)

I never practiced or nothing.

But I chose the banquet...

When we're supposed to come up
and say thank yous,

I did a monologue that was
basically a comedy routine.

-It wasn't written.
-Yeah. Yeah.

It was off the top. Everybody's
falling out their seats.

-When I look back at that moment now, oh, my God.

-Yeah.
-It was always in me to be a comedian.

-The road to discovery of how I was gonna do it,

well, that was one that...
you know, it kind of...

it kind of mapped out
the way it was.

-But I was chosen.
-Yeah.

-That's not luck.
-And I feel that my...

You know,
like we were talking to...

you know,
about being a sommelier

or anything you want to become,
my diligence...

And I know that my diligence
and my efforts

and my dedication

is what really got me
into the position that I'm in

-and it... what keeps me here.

When we talked
about that rebellion--

I think a lot of the rebellion--

I actually feel
like I wasn't able

because I was so in my head.

Now I feel like I can articulate
it better than I could

when we started...

was the rebellion
also was coming as a...

to me, as a form
of entertainment for my class

and for my friends.

I mean, when I was, like,
you know, again...

Who I am... It's so funny,

because we just talked so much
about evolution--

who I am sitting in this chair

is almost exactly who
was sitting in that chair

-in the classroom with the...
spitting out the notes. -So dope.

-So dope.
-But also completely fucking whole-r.

Like, I'm also so different.

-Mm-hmm.
-And, for me,

because...
there was so much focus

on who I... who I was at a time,

which was a character,

um, and there were... again,
a lot of my-my value as a human

was chalked up to that,
you know,

to Hannah Montana,
to that identity.

So, I got cast at 12 years old,

and that's obviously just
the spongiest,

most absorbent time
in your life

and, again,
a-a time of just self-discovery

and there's just so many things
that are happening and changing

and just, you know... Again,
I have five brothers and sisters

and they're growing up and
we're figuring out our dynamic.

And, um, you know,
the concept of the show

is that when I would alter
my image

and I would put on a wig
and I would,

you know, put on sparkly things,

-that I held a new value...
-Mm-hmm.

...that I was valuable.

Um, it did translate
into my real life.

There was...

...a different level of, like,

hysteria when Hannah Mon...

I mean, it was actually kind of
crazy being Hannah Montana.

Now I have a hard time
remembering

exactly what that felt like,
but, um,

there was, you know,
the way that kids would react

at these, like, Hannah shows

versus when I was myself
and I would meet fans out.

-It was... it was different.
And so... -Mm.

Again, o-on that, like,
kind of psychological level,

um, I guess
that's kind of why, originally,

um...

when I first started doing,

like, solo projects
as my own identity,

-I'd almost create...
-Mm-hmm.

kind of alter egos of myself.

Because I thought you almost...

that I, Miley... 'Cause my name
was Miley on the show, too,

which it wasn't. You know,

when my... when my friends
from Nashville

were going to audition,
obviously, the...

the name wasn't Miley, but
I embodied the character so much

that... they...

the writers thought
it made most sense

for Hannah to be Miley

because of how much
I truly was the character.

-Wow.
-And it didn't really feel like a character.

I just said, "Okay,

"someone's told me
I'm Hannah Montana.

I am now Hannah Montana."

-And anything that I create
for her... -One... You're in.

-100%.
...I am in. It's like...

It's beyond method,

because I was growing up as her.
She was me.

Like, there was no divide
between us.

That's who I was.

There was
the 15-year Hannahversary.

And this was 15 years of my show
being on air.

-And I spent the day...
-(exhales)

Wow.

...thinking,

"What do I want to do
with my next 15 years?"

That was what I dedicated
my day to.

And, usually, I would feel I
wasn't doing enough if I wasn't,

you know, talking with the fans,
creating.

But I thought, "This day is,
like, bigger than a b..."

It is a birthday, almost, to me.

And, like, I really feel...

we were talking
about spirituality--

that I needed to, on that day--

I wrote a letter
to Hannah Montana from myself.

Holy shit.

CYRUS:
And it was about, you know,

just my gratitude
towards the character.

Wa-Was it suggested?

Or is this something that you...

-you came up with and you did?
-No, I thought about it.

I thought about it. I, um...

-That's strong.
-I... I-I don't think anyone

really could've told me
to do it,

because a lot of the people
that are around me now

were not
in that three-day car ride

-with me and my mom, you know?
-That's strong, man. That's strong.

That was like...

It was just...

Yeah, so now...
so now when I wrote this letter

and I was able to kind of,
like...

make peace with it,

um, I thought...

and "peace" being the kind of
key word of the story--

is that, when I thought, "What
do I want the next 15 years?

What's my..." 'Cause I knew,
when I was in that car,

driving the three days
to California,

what I wanted, I guess, these
next 15 years to look like.

I knew what I wanted,
so I was able

to achieve it, because,
everything that I did,

I would know for a fact
if I was taking a step forward

or backwards,
because I knew my destination.

-Mm-hmm.
-And I think, you know,

clarity and knowing
what you want,

you're able
to make each day count.

So I really spent
this anniversary

thinking about what I wanted.

And it's kind of vague,

um, but somehow says any...
everything.

It was about
"I want to find peace."

The way that people feel
that they've been reborn

-or saved...
-Mm-hmm.

...I feel that I have been
six weeks ago.

I feel like everything changed
six weeks ago for me.

My mom also was amazing,

and she... archived

-and kept everything
from, like... -Mm-hmm.

...all my schedules, all...
everything.

Six weeks ago,
I found this schedule--

one of the first times
I'd ever traveled

to promote "Hannah Montana."

I was only, probably,
like, 12 years old,

and we were going to Europe.

And, um, they even had,
like, nap time

-built in the schedule for me,
'cause I was a child. -Mm-hmm.

And, um, when I looked
at the schedule,

I felt like this coat of,
like, armor came on

to protect

my, uh, like, innocent ste...
self that still lives.

Because, actually, when I looked
at that schedule, it upset me.

Because I felt that it...

wasn't really c-considering
my best interests at...

I don't think anyone did
anything to ever intentionally,

you know,
abuse me as a child to work,

because I wanted to do it.
But the schedule now,

if you would look at this
for one of your own children,

-I think you would be
kind of in shock. -It's... It was...

-It's insane.
The-the hours, the work... -Yeah. I think it was...

-...and what the... what
the time's being dedicated to. -It was shocking. It was: land.

Get ready in the limo.

In the limo, do, uh, interviews
at the same time.

Get to the hotel.

You know, become Hannah.

Do a concert. Go to the studio.

There was really... And then
there was, like, 20 minutes

for nap time and lunch,

which we know
that you cannot have lunch

-and take a nap as a child
in 20 minutes. -Mm-hmm.

And when I looked at it, um...

and one of my team members
who's here said,

"How does it make you feel?"

My immediate reaction was

that this is why I'm who I am

and that everyone else around
me, if you don't work this hard,

-you're never gonna...
It was the Will Smith, you know? -Mm-hmm, mm-hmm.

If you don't look
at this schedule and know

that this is what it takes,
you're never...

My... Instead of knowing that,
oh, it's...

I'm act...
That wasn't a place of...

it... of the ego.

It was actually a place of,
like, hurt.

-Mm.
-And, like, I guess, as a child, that made me...

It didn't feel
like that was best for me.

-Mm.
-And so, by looking at that schedule

and just putting my ego aside
and going,

"That, in some way,
affected me and hurt me."

You know,
but instead of looking at that

and going from that reaction
of ego, like,

"I can't feel it.
I can't admit it,"

I instead just even sent a text
and said,

"I'm really sorry that I kind of
exploded at that moment."

Because, really, what I...
It was much easier to feel anger

than to feel a little bit of,
like, pain in that.

And so,
just looking at those things,

looking at the schedules,
looking at...

And also, it said
in the beginning of the agenda,

of the calendar,
it said like, "We think

"that if this week goes
as planned,

this is going
to be a really huge success."

And it basically, you know...

There was...
there was no importance

of sleeping or eating.

And so that--
at that age of 12 years old--

taught me
if you want to be successful,

-you can't sleep
and you can't eat. -Uh, what I...

The great thing about
what's happening right now...

I can almost promise you...

studios, producers,
networks, right?

Hearing a...

a real talk,
a real conversation,

a real back-and-forth,
and now hearing,

well, the impact of said thing,
or said workload...

-Mm-hmm.
-...right, on young adult,

at whatever time in their life,

"Oh, wow. We-we...

-we can do better, right?"
-Mm-hmm.

Like, you're-you're...

This conversation now...

puts the pressure
on those people

that are in charge
at those times, in those places

to understand.

-"We can do better.
-Mm-hmm.

We can be more mindful." Right?

And at a time where, like you
said, it may not be malicious.

-Mm.
-It's not, you know, done with ill will.

-Everybody's trying to hustle...
-Yeah.

because everybody's trying
to work to get this thing.

-And everybody's goal
is the thing. -Yeah.

And it's got to work, and this
is how we got to do to get it.

Which is fine.
I'm not disregarding that.

I'm saying that you're-you're...
you're bringing up something

that ultimately makes people
have to be more aware.

And it couldn't be
a better time,

because it's what's...
it's what's happening now.

-If you look at the now,

-now it's all about
people becoming more aware. -Mm-hmm.

Aware of your words, aware
of the impact that your words

may have, aware of acceptance,

aware of equality,
aware of, you know,

difference within people
and understanding

and-and, you know, compassion.

And there's room for rest.

There's room for self.

There's room for mind,
rest, whatever it may be.

'Cause what we're talking about
relates to everyone.

-Everybody works so hard

to maintain a lifestyle
and take care of themselves

-and their families.

Regardless of what you do.

And everyone so hard, that

to the importance of creativity,

of family time.

it's been probably one

of the greatest things
to happen to us,

but also one of the worst.

It's been detrimental, I think,
to have our cell phones

basically creating an office
for us at all times, where

if you are unavailable,
and no one can reach you

at 2:00 in the morning,
it's that you're not dedicated.

-That you don't care.

And honestly,
people lose their jobs

for not being willing to live
at that-that height of pressure.

-Mm-hmm.
-If you... if you value, you know, family time,

if you value Sundays,
if you val...

-then you must not want it
enough. -Mm-hmm.

And you're not worthy
of this job,

and you're not worthy
of the success,

and so we're going to give it
to someone else

who's willing to run on zero

and to not have a quality
of life.

Yeah, I can't be that person
anymore.

I remember when, um,
Justin Bieber came out

-with, like, his 3D movie.

And he invited me
to the premiere.

And I was sitting in front
of him,

and his mom, like, tapped me
on the shoulder and said,

"Is there any, like,
advice..."--

which I couldn't believe,
because I was so young--

"...that you want
to give to Justin?"

And it was, I said,
"If you can..."

You know, there's-there's kind
of, like, different techniques

of, like, Reiki tapping
and things like this.

But I said, "If you could, like,
kind of almost tap yourself

"on the side of your head and
almost push 'record' on moments

that you want to remember,
because I don't remember."

-And I was only probably
17 or 18, but I had said -Wow.

-"I want you to remember this."
-Wow.

Like, you've got, you know,
speaking of people,

like Will Smith,
all these people

coming to watch this 3D movie
of this kid

who was just putting videos
on YouTube two years ago.

And I didn't know
where his career was gonna go,

or how long it was gonna last.

I didn't know the same thing
about my own.

And I just said,
"I just want you to remember.

"So, like, if you can try
to record moments like this

"in your head, or write them
down and, like, take a moment

"to inhale and, like, know
what this theater smells like,

-right now." Just remember.
-Be present. Yeah.

-Because I cannot remember.
-I got a blur.

And I would've missed out
on something.

And I should know
that more people like you and I

are going through all the things

that so many people have now

who simply aren't aware,

because we assume.

We assume so much
about the other person,

about the other race,
about the sex,

about the... the love
for same sex or not,

or choice of person
and what they want to be.

We have so much assumption.

And the reason why
we have so much assumption

is because we haven't
taken the time to truly talk.

We haven't taken the time
to truly talk

and to truly understand.

And if people...
if people understand

the power in conversation,
the power in dialogue,

the power in back-and-forth,

then you'll ultimately get to
the... to the place of solution.

That place is so far away

-because people aren't willing
to do this. -Mm-hmm.

I'm walking away

with such an amazing
understanding of who you are,
