Today, a family scrape the barrel on
a crucial paint job.

If I don't take over, we're not
going to have enough paint.

One couple dig for a victory...

I think you're going in a bit

I never thought it was easy.

..and a young family's big barn
project...

It's actually going quite well.

..leaves dad chipping away at the
DIY.

Overlooking the rural idyll
of Dordogne Valley

in southwest France is a
magnificent Chateau du Doux.

It has 48 rooms, a private pool and

is set in seven and a half acres
of grounds.

Bought by IT consultant Clive
and his wife Karen ten years ago,

they now run it as a wedding venue
with the help of daughter

and general manager Abby and son
Ross.

What do we love about it?

I love the architecture.

I love the location where we
are in France.

We live in a beautiful area
in France.

The countryside is just stunning.

Located 65 miles from the Lamothe,
they're still short on bookings

this year so are keeping an eye
on the budget as they get ready

for the wedding season, which kicks
off in less than two months' time.

Is it coming out?

It's coming out brown.

OK, let me...

The family still have one very big
job on their hands -

laying a concrete floor for the
marquee,

where they'll host wedding parties.

Can you pass this to me, Abby?

We've got to get the floor of the
marquee concreted tomorrow,

so today we are doing all
the preparation.

It's an awful lot of work.

With the weather taking a turn for
the worse,

they've decided to erect the marquee
to protect the concrete

from the rain, which could wash away
the surface before it dries.

Yeah, no, we've got to try not
to pull it too hard

because it does tear if you pull.
It will.

The type of concrete it is,
it just doesn't like rain.

It will not set properly,

so it's essential we get the roof
on.

That's the plan,
let's see how that goes.

HE SIGHS

It's difficult on a wet,
grassy bank.

Whatever the weather...

Slowly but surely.

...the cumbersome canvas calls for
the whole family to pull together.

Whoa.

Oh, careful, Dad.

I don't believe it,
its all fallen down.

There we go. Right, that side's in.

Right, this is on.

It's soaking wet.

We're up, we're in the dry.

A bit of a struggle.

This roof is enough to kill you.

Roof on, they're ready to tackle
the 20 side panels -

a job where son Ross is the go-to
expert.

Have we got that one the wrong

I'm afraid we have.

That one is the wrong way round.

Usually, I just like to make sure
that Dad doesn't put the wrong side

up because sometimes he doesn't
realise the error that he makes.

How could I possibly get it wrong?
He's put it on wrong.

Inspector, is that the right way

Yes, that's the right way

Right, there we go, all right.

Looking better.

One marquee ready for a concrete
delivery.

And, overnight, the waterproof
protection of the floor

certainly proves its worth.

It's rained all night

and everywhere is soaked,
it's gushing off the roofs.

Rain isn't the only worry.

If the delivery lorry can't fit
under the chateau's

stone arch entrance,

the bill for the new marquee floor
will be a lot bigger.

If the concrete lorry goes
under the arch,

we save about 400 euros
because we don't have to use

the extended pipe,
which is very expensive.

Getting the lorry under the arch
means crucial savings.

One quote for the floor even came in
at 2,800 euros,

that's about £2,400,
a lot of money.

Wow. It's looking good.
It's going through.

Now to manoeuvre the delivery pipe
to reach the marquee.

Jesus, look at that.

I hope he doesn't put cement all
over my roof.

Getting the pipe into position to
squirt

the seven and a half cubic
metres

onto the floor requires skill.

That's an impressive bit of kit.
Yeah.

This is good, this is saving a
lot of work.

To access the floor, Abby opens the
marquee.

I hope it's not quick-setting,
David.

No, it's pretty good.

That is pretty good, isn't it?
It's quite quick.

As they're laying the concrete,
Abby has some concerns.

Dad, how are we going to get
the sides back on?

Just leave it for now.

The water's pouring in.

Well, it's not so easy when there's
concrete there. All right.

As soon as it starts to go off, it
needs to be kept dry.

So, hopefully, the rain might even
ease up a bit more.

We've got about another couple
of metres to put in

and, yeah, we're done.

As the last of the concrete is
pumped through...

Brilliant, done, sorted.

..Mum Karen comes to take
a look at the new floor.

Quickly done, then.
Oh, that's ideal.

A permanent base, that's marvellous.

Yeah. To do that by hand would have
taken us two days and

it's taken us, what, two hours.

That's one thing that we can tick
off the list, which is fantastic

because it was...
Right, so it's got to be painted.

And then, if we have any spillages,
at weddings, we just hose it off.

With 70 wedding guests due to dance
here in a few weeks' time,

let's hope the rain eases off
and the weather improves.

Over 300 miles north is the
impressive Chateau des Lys.

The 19th-century property has
over 50 rooms, including four gites,

and sits in 15 acres of woodland.

It's the family home of rock
musician Tim,

former teacher Marguerite
and their 11-year-old son Joe.

They've been renovating the place
for the last six years...

Welcome, welcome.

..and generate income from B&B and
events.

I love the place, to be honest.

There's lots and lots of things
here which

I feel very much that we've
made a difference to

and is a big part of us now,

isn't there, in this building, you
know?

Oh...

This is a project and it's a great
project.

It's still exciting.

Located in an hour's drive
from Calais,

for only £180,
they transformed one of

the largest rooms in the chateau,
the library,

ready to host events.

It's got the wow factor a bit,
isn't it, this one, now?

Now attention is turning to
a long-overdue

project in the chateau's 15-acre
estate.

Wow. So that's, oh,
quite a lot of work, isn't it?

I promised you this birthday
present about how long?

Two years ago, I think. Hmm-hmm,
I remember.

Yes, which, do you remember what it
was?

It was...a box of chocolates.
Greenhouse.

No, it was a box of chocolates.
A greenhouse.

It was a greenhouse, you're right.
OK, yes.

To deliver this belated
birthday greenhouse,

first there's a section of wall
garden to sort out

where they want to grow produce for
the chateau.

How far do you think it should come
over here? Well, if I'm...

I don't know. If we take a line on
that tree...

We are planning to develop
a potager,

which is a walled vegetable garden.

Growing our own vegetables,

well, for the guest when we're
cooking.

So just think of that as the end of
the garden.

We're going to have loads
and loads of flowers

because we want to do flower
arranging weekends,

so it's just going to be
really exciting.

The plot is currently a section
of uneven mounds of overgrown
earth.

So, to give them a fighting chance
to get their garden level,

cleared of weeds and ready to plant
in time for this year's harvest,

Tim's bringing in the big guns.

Lifting up, lifting down.

Tim's got this digger from a
neighbouring farmer...

That is shovel doing that and that.

..and today is his first time in the
driving seat.

And forward, backwards.

Having a learner driver in her
brand-new potager

is making Marguerite nervous.

My main concern is that he's going
to damage that wall.

So tip, tip is that way. OK.

Marguerite? Yeah.

Can you come here for a second?

I need to know how close to the
wall I am.

I'll try levelling.

You've got this much last left,
so... OK.

That bit we might dig out by hand.

Much to Margaret's relief,
Tim backs away from the wall.

Wow. That's an efficient way of
weeding.

With such a mighty earth shifter,
it's easy to get carried away.

I think you're going in a bit

and he's feeling confident enough

to risk going in a little closer to

This magnificent turreted property

set in the wooded hills
of the Dordogne

is Chateau Monteil.

Bought for £380,000,

it has eight bedrooms,

a heated outdoor swimming pool,

all set in seven acres.

It's been home to Tim, who
previously worked as a chef,

his wife, Krys, and their
two-year-old son, Owen,

for the past six years.

It's the perfect property for us.

It's beautiful, great location,
every bit of it works.

It never crossed my mind that I'd be
living in a big house,

in a chateau like this.

Located 93 miles from Bordeaux,

to make their home work
as a business,

the couple now offer the entire
chateau for summer holiday rentals

whilst they move into
a smaller property in the grounds.

We wanted a property that had
business potential,

and here it is so touristy.

We just knew that it couldn't fail.

Hello, welcome.

With their rental business going
from strength to strength,

they want to expand facilities.

We just need to generate more
living space fairly rapidly.

Opportunity for that comes
in the form of a large barn,

where they'll eventually create more
living quarters,

but first, they want to provide
an indoor guest games room.

It will certainly make it a more
flexible property.

It would give us a lot more space,
usable space.

Hopefully that rolls into
the business as well.

They had a massive clear-out and
sold off their unwanted clutter

to raise a tidy sum for
the barn renovation project.

One man's rubbish is
another man's treasure.

HE EXHALES

To make the budget go even further,

Tim plans to do
most of the work himself

by removing the render covering
the old stonework

of the barn exterior.

I don't know quite how difficult
it'll be,

I don't know how hard
it's going to be.

I'm just going to learn on the job.

First task is erecting the raised
platform

to create a good, secure base
to work from.

I've bought this from the UK
for 50 quid.

I've never put it together.

Oh, that one.

I reckon these are where the feet
go - in there -

but I've only got three of them.

I think the feet definitely
go in there.

With about 40 different pieces,

putting it together is something
of a puzzle.

I suppose it would have helped me if
it'd come with instructions.

Yeah, not sure about that
for a minute.

It may be a conundrum, but Tim's
making big savings here.

The quotes have been anything from
1,000 to 10,000

just to put up scaffolding.

Even the cost of putting up
some scaffolding

would outweigh the total cost
of doing this work, you know.

Learning new skills on the job is
one of the joys of chateau life.

We seem to be all right.
It seems to be hooked there.

It seems OK.

I think all there is to do now is
jump up, have a go

and see how easily it comes off.

This is the moment of truth, really.

Tim's happy and ready to ascend
and begin chiselling away

at the massive render removal job.

Where it's weathered and it's
popped,

it looks really bad.

So, this is all going really well,

but then again, this is probably
where the most water damage is.

I feel like I'm getting lucky,

I don't think it's all going to go
like this.

It's actually going quite well.

With around 1,300 square feet of
original stonework to uncover
single-handedly...

..this is no small task.

At Chateau du Doux,

preparations for the first wedding
of the season

are moving on at pace.

The newly-laid concrete for the
marquee floor has to be painted,

but there's another crucial room
that has to be dressed to impress

for the big day.

It's a very important room during
our weddings.

There's only ever high jinks in
here, I think,

the men getting ready
with the groom.

The groom comes up with his merry
men and gets changed here.

The 4,000 odd books

originally came from a library
in Paris.

An impressive collection that means
getting this room

done and dusted for the wedding
season is no mean feat.

Anybody with a dust allergy
isn't allowed in the library.

Then there's the question of the
parquet floor,

where the high jinks of last season
left their mark.

All 860 square feet have been
sanded down,

and are now being stained
and varnished.

If you want to start there,
do you want me to come down
the other side? Yes.

That means a lot of painstaking
brushwork.

So, in order to finish this one room
Clive and I are working on today,

we'll be here for three hours.

It does get your knees
after a while.

Right, Clive, come and inspect this
and see if that's good enough.

Clive's eagle eye soon picks out
some slapdash workmanship.

Who did this bit before?

Put a bit of dark... Yeah, go on.

They will never notice.

Look at that.

Anyone would think we've done this
before. Yeah.

Well, I should be quite good at it
by the time we finish.

It's about a third done. Keep going.

The library floor is shining up
nicely.

Now, just 4,000 odd books to dust,

furnishings to put into place

and a marquee floor to paint,

ready for the first wedding in a few
weeks' time.

or potager, is taking shape.

To be honest, we're not doing
too badly, are we?

fruit, vegetables, herbs

and flowers for guests.

Many chateaux were self-sufficient,
using estate produce,

something we've worked to
re-establish at our place.

I fell in love with this place
mainly because of the walled garden.

We've been at it a few years -

clearing the
2,000 square metre site,

tilling the soil,

creating a greenhouse

and plotting out beds.

We've started to fill
our own walled garden

with an array of flowers

and fresh ingredients
for the kitchen.

Nothing quite beats the taste of
home-grown...

..and there are absolutely
no food miles.

It's fresh rhubarb.

Put it in, here we go. There you go.

I like it.

For Tim and Margreeth,

the priority is getting their beds
dug in time for spring sowing.

We'll have this all finished at the
right time of year,

so we should get some stuff in that
actually grows.

They also want a greenhouse,

which Tim intends to make extra
green

by constructing it from old doors,
windows and timber offcuts

they have left over from chateau
renovations.

Everything's got glass.

This is good news.

Everything's
a slightly different size.

Great, this one's got some intact
hinges on it. I wonder where that
came from.

I've not seen this door before,
I didn't know that was there.

I hope it's not rotten.

To get the ready glazed doors
in situ,

Tim's back in the driving seat.

It's amazing how much stuff that you
find that's lying around already,

old doors, old wood,

and I've got enough stuff to build
a greenhouse,

which ordinarily would cost a small
fortune.

Unlike a ready-made kit,

this mix-and-match greenhouse comes
with no instructions.

I had a rough idea of what I wanted
to do with these.

The rest, I didn't have a clue what
I was doing.

I really am making this up
as I go along.

It's quite nice
when it holds itself up.

Repurposing is also the watchword
for the rest of the potager plot,

where they're using polythene to
keep the weeds down.

This is stuff that I have left over
from doing the grenier...

In the Dordogne, three months
after Tim started chipping away

at the exterior render
of the chateau's large stone barn,

where they want to create
a guest games room,

the full beauty of the original
stonework has been revealed.

And at the guest entrance
to their chateau,

Chris is working some
transformative magic of her own,

painting the gates in a unique
pale blue she's created.

These little curls, they are
a little bit tricky to paint

because you really have to just push
the brush in more!

So, yeah.

It looks like there's
not a lot of gate in here,

but, because of these curls,
there's actually a lot to paint!

Tim's hard work may have uncovered
the handsome old stone walls,

but it's also exposed
a less attractive filling job.

I've got an old doorway that's been
bricked up with old terracotta

and I'm not sure what.

So the plan is we're going to try
and pull all that out,

so hopefully we can brick it back up
with original stone.

To bring it back to its former glory
requires some expertise,

so Tim's called in his friend Paul,
who's experienced in stone masonry.

All right. Sorted now! Yeah!

The be-goggled Tim is looking
strangely familiar! Bono!

I'd go for Bono!
It's better than Ali G!

That's just the beanie and the hat
and the glasses, though, isn't it?

Oh, you two!

Shall we have a look
at inside, then? Let's do it.

Yeah, time to get on with the job in
hand!

If we take it all back an inch,
just leave two walls,

and basically we can just put the
debris in the middle as we go. Yeah.

So, basically, we're building
two walls, one on the inside,

one on the outside.

OK. Shall we get started?

No time like the present!

And Paul's got a cunning plan.

Well, some of these
stones are going to fall down,

but, because there's no lintel,
something's going to collapse,

we're just not sure how much. Yeah.

The lack of supporting lintel
above the bricked up area means

the wall above could collapse.

I think, if we take out underneath
here first. Yeah.

And then brick up,
get this section supported,

just in case there's any
movement on the door frame.

By removing and replacing
small sections at a time,

they can control the demolition.

So, shall we knock it out,
see if it falls down? Go for it!

All right, I'm going
to punch through.

The first patch of brickwork comes
out without a hitch.

If it all comes away as he's doing
that, then we're in trouble!

But it seems all right!

The bricks are being replaced
with old stones from other

renovation work at the chateau.

They build an outer
and inner stone wall...

..and fill the cavity with rubble.

Now we can take out the next
chunk of wall above it

and basically just repeat
the process, just build up.

Perfect.

Perfect!

I think that's going to look great,
isn't it? Yeah, it's not bad, is it?

Less than 30 miles away, with their
first wedding of the season in a

few weeks' time, Ross, Karen, Clive
and Abby are fixing up the library,

ready for the groom and his
entourage on the big day.

The floor has been stained and
varnished and the entire collection

of about 4,000 old books
have been painstakingly cleaned.

Well, Ross and I spent two
afternoons in here

dusting every single book.

So, yes, it took about 24 hours of
labour.

The furniture is back in place,

but the library is still
missing its piece de resistance,

a tapestry that came with
the chateau,

which they want to hang above the
fireplace.

A job that daughter Abby is not too
enthusiastic about.

Do we even like this tapestry?

I don't, but...

Whatever.

It could be a challenge,
as many of the chateau's

interior walls are solid granite.

We're going to have fun putting this
one up, the brackets have gone.

OK. There are brackets that fit into
that.

Yeah, you've got to have special
hooked brackets.

And where they are... No-one knows.

..I couldn't tell you, to be honest.

I've seen them somewhere.

I don't think they're in here,
but there's loads of...

Well, I've got similar ones there.

They're curtain hooks.

I know they're curtain hooks,
but they will do.

They're very similar.

But the last thing we want is it
falling down on someone's head.

Yeah, I know.

That's the problem with this place,

everything is moved and
nothing's put back.

It's actually starting to depress me
now.

A lot of the jobs that we do at the
chateau are not straightforward.

I don't know, I just hope this
isn't granite -

otherwise we're going to have real
trouble drilling it.

Clive's having a bit of a problem
with the screws.

That doesn't look good at all.

I think that will be sitting
around somebody's ears later.

I don't like these.

They seem very cheap and nasty.

Luckily, the rest of the job goes
more smoothly.

Ah, look, it even covers the dirty
mark I've made on the wall.

is still to be painted before
the 70 guests

for their first wedding of the
season arrive in a few weeks' time.

Over 300 miles away,
in northern France,

Tim is tackling getting the roof

onto
Marguerite's birthday greenhouse.

All part of the plan to provide
sustainable

low-cost produce to serve their
chateau guests.

I know roughly what I want to do,

but it's one thing knowing it

and the other one...there's another
thing actually realising it.

Constructing the entire thing
from old doors and bits of wood

lying around the chateau is adding
an extra challenge.

Marguerite has found a use for some
salvaged storage boxes

they got free from a closed
down factory in the village.

The boxes are the barrier
between the wild garden

and the vegetable garden,

so it's meant to keep the gravel in
and, at the same time,

it will give us a few, like,

raised beds for herbs and stuff.

I just can't wait to see them
filled with mint and coriander.

Once Marguerite has her troughs in a
row,

she's ready to pot up the potager's
first ever plants.

The first thing to go into our new
garden, strawberries.

Hey, oh, I love strawberries.
Me, too.

It's very exciting to get the first
plants in.

You just really feel like you're
getting there.

Tim's creating a sturdy apex to
form the greenhouse's roof.

These should give it structural
strength.

And Marguerite's hoping to give her
runner beans

support with some fallen sticks.

Well, I'm going to build a little
thing for runner beans

and then, once that's built,
I can plant some beans.

I just put a few beans by
every pole.

Before you know it, we'll be
eating bean soup and bean stew.

The beans are planted, Tim.

Well done, that's great.

With her beds full of beans,

Marguerite can lend a hand getting
the greenhouse roof in place.

Let it go, that's fine.

That's really nice.

There's still a couple of days' work
there,

but it gives a really good idea now.

It's pretty solid, that's the good
thing about it.

the first wedding of the season,

where Abbie, Clive and Karen

will host 70 guests.

In the marquee for
the evening event,

the newly-poured concrete
has set well.

Now to save money,
they plan to paint the entire

900 ft using just
two five-litre cans

left over from a previous project.

It should be OK.
We'll do it sparingly.

to start with and see how we go.

With more than 30 bedrooms
to prepare

and now a marquee floor to repaint,
the family still have

a fair bit to do
before their first wedding.

Tim and Krys are making

good progress on their stone barn.

The stonework that was once hidden
is now looking incredible.

Krys has painted almost
all of the barn shutters

and doors in a lavender colour,

and has just one final pair
to complete.

When this one's done,

that's pretty much the exterior
of the barn finished.

It feels really good
to paint the last one.

I'm very much looking forward
to finishing this.

We've got a room!
Some finishing touches needed,

but the new games room is ready
for its first activity.

Table tennis took hold in the
stately homes of Victorian England.

It's well suited to
inclement weather,

also available in France.

Four months ago, Tim and Krys's barn

was covered in unsightly
grey render - a lacklustre

first impression,
as guests arrive at the chateau.

They had a massive clear-out...
We could sell

all this kitchen equipment.
..raising money for renovations.

After chipping away,

to reveal beautiful stonework,

painting the shutters and doors,

and creating a new ceiling...

..the barn has been given
a new lease of life,
