Autism is a disease

characterized by verbal
and nonverbal language disorders.

As well as perceptual
and cognitive problems.

This disease was described in 1943
by American psychiatrist Leo Kanner.

Ever since, much research
has been done about its causes,

and the best treatment
for these children.

In 1964, Rimland proved

this disease
was not provoked by the parents.

Since it was believed

its cause was a lack of affection
from the parents.

Then parents were referred
to as schizophrenic parents

or refrigerator parents.

In 1964, a support group starts
helping these children in the US.

In 1968, Dr. Margaret Mahler states:
These children condition

is not to be blamed
on parents mistreatment.

Parent's emotional abuse
was not the cause.

Today, research
on the organic etiology

of this syndrome is being made.

Autism research has progressed

because of parents
with no professional help,

who started to studying,
creating techniques,

on how to improve
their children's lives.

many had never been to school.

once trained to the routine,

they help and work.
