When I overdosed,
how did you get the news?

It was the worst day
of both of our lives.

It was absolutely
the worst day of my life.

- Yeah.
- All I see is,

"Demi Lovato overdosed,"
and I thought you died.

The definition of true friends

are the people who are always
there for you,

even when you're at your lowest.

Today, I can't wait for you to
meet two of my best friends--

my literal angels,
Matthew Scott Montgomery

and Sirah.

For those of you who don't know,

we have been best friends
for how long?

- A little over nine
years. - Wow!

I know all the dates.

- Demi: How did we meet?
- Matthew: We met because

we were on the same
Disney Channel show.

And then we met.

I had been doing sober
companioning and life coaching,

so I would get called in
with celebrities and other
people,

and I get a call and
they're like, "We have this
girl.

She's a very big deal."
I'm like, "Okay.

I think I'll be okay.
I've never had television."

- [ laughs ]
- "Like, I don't know

"who anyone is
unless they're Wu-Tang,

so, whatever."
So I pull up,

and you look me up and down,

and then you go,
"I like your disco pants."

And you walk away,
and I was like,

"Go off with the eyeroll, bitch.

- You're my friend."
- Oh, my gosh.

You've seen me at my worst, and
you've still been there for me.

Was there a specific moment
when you started to worry?

- Always? - Literally every day
of my life?

- I mean... [ laughs ]
- Both of you have had

incredibly difficult journeys,

and I feel very protective
over the both of you.

- Aw...
- You know, and so, like--

and--and, especially with you,
Demi. No offense, but, like,

- [ laughs ]
- even more with...

- even more with, because--
- Because of what happened.

- Both: Yeah.
- And it's okay.

- Yes.
- When I overdosed,

when and how
did you get the news?

It was the worst day
of both of our lives.

It was absolutely
the worst day of my life.

- Yeah.
- And, uh, I had gotten a call

the night before and you were
like, "Can you come hang out?"

And I was like, "I can't.
I have to go to New York,"

'cause my grandmother and my
sister were dying in the
hospital

at the same time,
going through stuff.

So I fly to New York, and
everyone turns on their phones,

and all I see is
"Demi Lovato overdosed,"

and I thought you died.

And I fainted onto the--
on the plane,

and then people had to, like,
carry me out, and I--

I definitely think
that was probably

the most terrifying moment
of my entire life.

- It was really--
- I mean, that day was--

that was the worst case.
That was a nightmare.

- It was so--yeah.
- I started getting texts--

I was driving to an audition,
and I got a text saying,

"I'm sorry" from a friend of
mine. I said, "Sorry for what?"

And then Max called me,
security Max,

and the first thing he said
when I picked up the phone was,

"She's okay."

- Mm.
- And then I checked TMZ,

- of course.
- [ sobs ]

Both: Aw!

I'm so proud of you.

- I'm so sorry.
- Oh, no!

I love you so much.

[ exhales strongly ]

That was the--
it was the worst day.

When you were in the hospital,
I know you were

really honestly
gone for a while,

but when did you realize
the severity

of what had happened to you?

I woke up, and I didn't know
where I was.

And so that was terrifying,

because I knew what I had been
doing the night before that
morning,

and then I was hooked up
to all this stuff.

My mom was there,
and I asked her,

I said, "What happened?"

And she said,
"Honey, you overdosed."

I felt defeated,
like I was like,...

Not me. I thought that I had it
under control."

It wasn't until my little sister
Madison

stood at my bedside
and I couldn't see her face.

And I asked, "Who's there?"

And that's when she said,
"It's me, it's Madison."

The nurse pulled me aside
in the ICU

and was like, "You know your
friend should be dead, right?"

It felt really good to have you
by my side and I know,

Sirah, you would've been there
if you could, but,

ugh, that was the worst timing
on my part.

[ laughs ] Yeah, Demi,
great time to go do that.

Really stacking it on me.

[ laughter ]

Do you guys have advice for
anyone who has a loved one

going through issues
with substance abuse?

For anyone that's going
through that,

I think the best thing
that you can do

is reach out and get help, and
get help for your family members

and seek out professional help,
but I would also really

encourage people to make sure
that you're choosing

a really good team or a place
in order to get people

the service that they need,

'cause that is the most crucial
thing is, you know,

seeking help and making sure
that the help is good.

- Mm-hmm.
- From someone who

doesn't have a background...

- You would do that one, yeah.
- ...in a lot of things

that you guys have,

a lot of times frequently
I've asked you

and probably will continue to,
like, how can I be there for
you?

Teach me how to help you.

And that's something that I'm
still--definitely still
learning.

Because it can be very,
very overwhelming

and it's really hard to know
what the right thing is to do.

The three of us didn't have
the easiest childhoods.

Ultimately there was
a lot of pressure on all of us

to be strong for our families.

I think that's why
we're so close, because

we have the weight
of the world on our shoulders

all the time, and it finally
comes off when we're together.

- Yeah.
- Yes.

And we can be whatever
we are together,

and I think that's such a gift,
'cause if you really think
about,

like, the amount of times
we've all unraveled

on each other together.

It's like, this isn't a
friendship, this is family for
me.

- Same.
- Yeah,

you're my childhood
best friends,

even though we didn't
meet till later.

- Literally!
- [ laughter ]

Oh, my God, cute!

- You guys are, though.
- It's true.

- Same!
- Yeah.

I love that, and
I love you guys.
