So, we're not on track.

another 80 ounces
to hit a million dollars.

We don't have a lot of time,
so every load counts now.

at least 27 ounces of gold
every week.

a lot of consistency
in that material?

Absolutely loving it.

[jason] I'm anticipating
jesse's cut is gonna come

Through and put some good
gold in our pockets today.

gold bearing tributary

To the northern edge
of the main channel
at lynx creek.

1,300 feet upstream

To a sharp turn,

But there's still
another 1,100 feet

Of potential pay
beyond the bend.

I've been crawling up
this cut, deeper and deeper,

So, I'm just gonna make sure
that gold's still up there.

So, I wanna be testing
all the way up it

To make sure
that it just doesn't end.

It's got all of the signs
that it should have gold,

But, until you pan it,
you really never know.

With any luck, there will be
plenty of gold in it.

if jessie's cut has ran

And the guys
are counting on me

a hot lead on a lost mine

My buddy, logan's family,
had this ranch

And I've always
wanted to get up there.

It has
all the hallmark signatures

Of potentially being
a dandy little place.

after an unsuccessful
prospect in alaska,

They're heading deep
into montana gold country,

15 miles east
of the big belt mountains,

To prospect
at the teague ranch,

An abandoned mine
turned cattle farm.

[rob] I really think
this has a possibility.

[dave] it's got the history,
it's got the geology,

Because, if it's
on the backside
of confederate gulch,

Should be some good gold.

[narrator] confederate gulch
has been a hot spot for gold

Since the american civil war.

Exiled confederate soldiers
made the first discoveries
in 1864

And the area was soon dubbed
the richest acre on earth,

With over 18 tons of gold
mined in just under 70 years,

Worth over
one billion dollars
in today's money.

on the historic ground.

has the ranch been
in the family?

a mining claim in 1907.

It was originally purchased
as more
of a retirement investment.

was first mined in the 1860's

By hand and hydraulics

And then by a dragline dredge
in the 1930's,

The area producing
over a 126 million dollars
worth of gold

At today's price.

Almost a century on
from when the old timers
worked the creek,

Dave and rob
are on the hunt for gold

The old timers missed.

Are you excited yet?

Yeah! I'm excited, buddy.

There might be some easy
friggin money up there, dave.

it's been a rough season.

We've all faced some really
tragic things this year,

But I'm more determined
than ever to get
my guys some gold

And I can't make
a mistake now.

It's too late
in the season.

See where
they cut down through there?

This here
is what we're looking for,
it's bedrock.

It's not
a dredge tailing's pile.

You can see it
right there, that's bedrock.

And so, what we're looking at,
this has probably
not been mined.

When you see
this kind schisty rock,

All this
is natural sluice boxes.

Water runs over this,
gold is in this stuff.

This stuff will collect gold
like a [beep].

This has really only had
one serious miner on it.

Now, the guys who came in
and hand worked it,

They were serious,
but they would take
a real tiny little spot

And then the dredge came in
and we're the third miner.

I've never been
just the third miner.
That's what excites us.

[dave] it's pretty amazing.

[chris] kc better find
some ground real quick,

Because this pile of pay
is gonna last
about half a day.

[narrator] at lynx creek,
the roach is hungry for pay.

We were scraping by,
but we're gonna be screwed
here real, real soon.

Kc and jason have lost
the pay streak

Around a sharp bend
in the tributary.

So, my thought process, kc,

Is that the reason
that we're getting
bad pans right now,

Is because we have
a really hard s-curve here,

And I'm hoping that the start
of this s-curve

Stopped the gold.

That way it's
not jesse's cut ran out,

We just have to advance
forward a little bit.

That's what I'm hoping.

[narrator] jason's theory,

A sharp turn in the tributary
stopped any gold

From being deposited
on the s-bend,

But if they move up 30 feet,
where the channel
straightens out,

They could
be back on the gold.

[jason] see how
it widens out, flattens out...

[kc] this spot would
have been dump out point
for gold right here.

There's the gold,
but it's not a lot of it here

is gonna thicken up

We'll be sitting
a lot better off.

we're starting to pull up.

at teague ranch.

Dave and rob form
a plan for their prospect.

[rob] they shoveled here,
atlanta gulch

With the dragline
that was left there.

-[dave] the black,
that's what's been mined.

[narrator] in the shadow
of the legendary
confederate gulch,

Teague ranch is made up
of almost 4,000 acres
of pasture land,

Wide glacial planes
and narrow ravines.

They will focus this prospect
on atlanta creek,

The tributary hit hardest
by the old timers.

[dave] all right,
let's go up there to atlanta,

See if we can find some gold.

I've never been on
a property that's this vast.

From the research
that rob and I have done,

Atlanta creek
took a lot of gold out,

And they worked it
pretty hard, the old timers,

And so, that's where
we're gonna start.

[narrator] first step, retrace
the path of the old dredge.

-[dave] so, this first pile,
you think it's dredge?
-[ken] yeah.

They did something here?

[ken] yeah, they had
a dry land dredge in here.

[dave] there's their pile,
they kicked it over there.

Yep, then
they ran right up the gut.

The good thing about that,
is, usually they leave
the side pay.

Yes.

[dave] this is a hunt.

What we're looking for,
is where the dredge went.

It's like this big, huge area

And we've gotta figure out
what happened here.

Look at that pile
of over burden there.

Here's one of his old lines.

They use this for tying off
on a dragline or a boom.

Or even a winch.

So, what he did,
is he came up the middle,

Cast all
of the over burden up there.

That's those big piles.

And then he mined basically
about 40, 50 feet wide,

And, really,
what rob and I are looking,

Is what he did,
but what he didn't do.

[narrator] dave believes
a dragline dredge

Worked half a mile
up atlanta creek,

Throwing out its tailings
on either side.

If he can find gold
in the side pay,
past the tailings piles,

The ranch
could be hiding a fortune.

Just snooping a little bit,

Taking a little sample.

I'm seeing bedrock here.

This stuff's got
my curiosity piqued.

When they were dredging this,

What did they
put that up there for?

You gotta be
a gold detective.

You look
for every little clue.

Hey, dave.

I got a pan that [beep]
I got my pocket--

You already pulled some dirt?

Yeah. Come out
off one of those piles.

[rob] I'm trying
to find first blood.

[dave] let's do it.

Got some black sand in there.

some gold in a pan
and that's a good sign.

The only thing
we need to do now,

Is get an excavator,
figure out how deep they went,

And really,
if they left us anything.

'cause I like it.
This is amazing.

Ah, I mean, it's red red.

[narrator] in jesse's cut,

Team turin chase
a pay streak
of iron rich dirt.

We got this false bedrock
all through this area
right here,

But then it goes
from that tan false bedrock

To one heck
of a blood red pocket.

Look at that.

looks really good.

All is well
here at lynx creek.

[nathan] got dirty water!

It's starting
to change colors quite a bit.

[narrator] with a limited
desert reserve,

The team
must recycle their water,

Sluicing into the same pond
that feeds the plant.

[nathan] it was clear,
but now it's starting to turn
into like an off color.

It's starting
melting up the box

And start carrying gold out.

that's rushing pretty good,

But I think just the amount
of heavies that you have...

Gonna grab a sample
from out here

And we'll pan it out
and see.

We're in really good gold now,

We just don't wanna be
[beep] out.

See what's in there.

Yeah, look at that.

There's gold in this pan.

We're losing gold
at the end of the sluice.

we gotta shut this plant down

Until we figure
the water situation out.

Clogs the sluice with mud,

Causing gold to wash
straight off the end
of the box.

We've got
a lot of heavies in it.

All of our tailing is kind
of fanning out everywhere.

Our suction's over here
and the material's
going into it,

So we got to move
some of these tailings over,

Direct the water
out to the right,

Make it circulate
round the pond.

Hey, jason. We got
a pretty big problem
down here.

The pump is starting
to suck up some dirty water

So, we gotta
figure a plan out.

Maybe move some
of these tailings around.

[narrator] nate's plan
to save the pond...

Jason will dig a channel

To change the flow
of the sluice water.

The deep channel will slow
the dirty roach tailings

And force them
to the opposite side
of the pond from the pump,

Allowing time
for the heavy materials
from the pay dirt

To settle to the bottom.

If it works, by the time
water circulates to the pump,

It should be clean enough
to send back
through the roach.

[jason] when I get
a radio call from nater,

Telling me
I need to get down here

Out of the cut.

I know it's something serious.

[narrator] to dig the channel,
jason must
carefully manoeuvre

The 50-ton excavator
onto the sandy pond wall.

[jason] there's a lot
of weight right now,

Sitting on basically
just sand.

a little bit,
as a matter of fact.

Normally, dave's
the one doing this stuff,

to the point of no return,
there's no return.

Definitely not

But it's gotta get done.

Jason must dig a channel
to clean up the water system.

When you
don't have clean water,

You create viscosity,

And viscosity will wrap
a membrane around the gold

And it floats it
right out of the box.

[jason] but, hopefully,
if we can reach down
and dig this channel,

It will direct
all of our dirty water

To the other side of the pond

And give that water
a chance to settle out.

[narrator] over the next
two hours, he excavates
over 80 tons of dirt.

Out as far as I can get it.

It's amazing what you'll do

To bring home
money for your family.

I'm seeing how thin it is.

The problem is, this area
has only this much pay.

My pay is minimal, so,
we'll be out of this drainage
by the end of the day.

There's been reports
of good gold through there,

But we won't know
before we put a pan
in the ground.

So, why didn't we go
over here in season one?

[kc] this was all
off limits back then.

[narrator] for two seasons,
the team has focused
on gold bearing tributaries

To the eastern end
of lynx creek.

But with unrestricted access
from the land owners,

Kc has spotted
a 1,500 foot long tributary,

North-west
of the main channel.

If it holds gold,

Kc could've discovered
enough ground

To push the team over
their million dollar goal.

[jason] let's go
pop some holes, brother.

[kc] I'll grab the 220.

This tributary
looks real promising,

Probably hasn't been touched
in a 100 years.

But, when you're chasing gold,
it's never a perfect science.

I think the guys like
my prospecting skills

As long as it's
filling up their box
with gold.

I've had prospects
where we don't fine
a lot of color in the pan,

And I can see it
in their eyes.
Respect changes a little bit.

And there's a lot of evidence
of ground sluicing.

why the dredge quit here.

We believe
that it was all hand workings,

Because the trees
are all bigger.

along the edge
of the old dredge workings,

Dave shifts focus to a site
worked by the first miners
in the 1860's.

[dave] maybe the dredge
figured they got all the gold
by the hand workings.

I don't know, until we put
some holes in the ground.

Look what they did here.

They built a dam.

Probably routed
the water around

And then that allowed
them to work in here.

They would've had
a sluice right here

And you'd have
one guy shoveling in,

And then one guy
picking rocks up
out of the sluice blocks

And pitching them up here.
That's why that hump's there.

And then they'd start
panning it down,
and drink till it's gone.
