kind of flamboyant

and over-the-top.

But when her husband

was shot and killed, she
learned a valuable lesson.

REPORTER: The heir to
the Gucci fashion empire

was gunned down.
PHILIPS: Even if it

incriminated her,
it was almost like

she was laughing in
the face of justice,

in the face of the
media, in the face

of the Gucci family.

NARRATOR: She learned how
to get away with murder.

- Patrizia was born
on December 2, 1948.

She was the love child
of a trucking baron and a waitress.

PHILIPS: She was born
in a small village outside of Milan.

She had a very
simple life,

until her mother married
a man who was wealthy.

That man adorned her with gifts.

Mink coats and fast cars.

NARRATOR: As a young girl,
one of Patrizia Reggiani's biggest ambitions

was to marry up.

- She started
making her way

across the rich-kid
party circuit in Europe.

PHILIPS: She had a very
flamboyant, extravagant...

style, and she was
often ridiculed

because of
that style.

AZARI:
At the age of 21,

she met Maurizio Gucci.

They were both
at a party.

PHILIPS:
Maurizio went up

to Patrizia and said
that she favors Liz Taylor,

and she responded,

"Trust me. I'm
much better."

NARRATOR: Maurizio Gucci was
one of the heirs to the Gucci empire,

a leather goods company

that had amassed
unprecedented cultural capital

and embodied the height of
Italian society and luxury.

- Maurizio was
the only son

of Rodolfo.

Together,
they owned

50% of the company.

DWYER: Maurizio was
immediately taken with Patrizia.

When he made it clear
that he wanted to marry her,

his father really discouraged
the relationship.

She just wasn't of the social
class that the Guccis were.

PHILIPS: But three years
later, at the age of 24, they got married.

Patrizia and Maurizio had
this very lavish life,

a very full life,
and Patrizia really took to it.

Maurizio immediately bought
multiple properties all over te world.

NARRATOR: Their home
base was in Milan, Italy,

and Maurizio
bought properties

in New York City and
Saint Moritz, Switzerland,

making room for
their growing family.

In 1976,

they had their first
daughter, Alessandra,

and in 1981, their
second daughter, Allegra.

After the birth of
their second daughter,

the family finally accepted
Patrizia as one of their own.

Their life was full, and
Maurizio showered Patrizia with gifts,

including a
200-foot yacht.

GITTARDI: He was a
billionaire, Maurizio Gucci, billionaire!

I think it was impossible
for him to know how much money he has.

- The couple hung out
with people like...

Jackie Onassis Kennedy,

Audrey Hepburn.

They were socialites.

They were the rich and famous
of Italy and the fashion world.

DWYER: At the height of their
marriage, Patrizia Gucci was known

as Lady Gucci around Milan.

She liked walking
around, wearing hundreds

of thousands of dollars' worth
of diamonds.

AZARI: She wore
Gucci head to toe.

That was something
that, you know, was...

was very much intertwined
with her identity.

She was a brand
ambassador.

PHILIPS:
Patrizia really felt

like Gucci was her
company as well.

NARRATOR: In the Gucci
family, it was frowned upon

to have wives work at the
company, but Patrizia saw an opportunity.

- Maurizio was not
very business-savvy.

DWYER: He was never the most
aggressive businessperson

in the Gucci family.

- Maurizio seemed
to always listen

to Patrizia.

DWYER: She was pushing him to
be a little bit more aggressive.

- She sharpened

Maurizio's claws

into building a franchise out
of Gucci, and even though it really

cheapened the brand,

she didn't care, because it
was bringing in more money.

PHILIPS: When Maurizio's
father died, Maurizio gained full 50% control

of the Gucci company.

NARRATOR: In an effort
to take over fully,

Maurizio began an
aggressive campaign

to force his relatives out
of the family business.

PHILIPS:
That's when

he started to not listen

to Patrizia.

It was a big
slap in the face

for her.

Maurizio started to
distance himself from her.

- He had affairs,
and he wouldn't come home,

so the marriage between
Patrizia and Maurizio

kind of begins

to unravel.

And in December of 1985,
Maurizio packs his bag and leaves.

This made Patrizia
very angry.

NARRATOR: Patrizia swore
she would get revenge.
