So hopefully we caught it

the old bearing off.

It's a real tight fit
on this gap right here.

So he's pulling
it with a puller.

what I do is very stressful,

You know, you got to manage
all the equipment,

Manage the plant, sluice box,

All the mobile equipment.

And we got a lot more
equipment this year.

You just pray every day,
saying,

"baby, don't break down,"

You know,
"let's have a good day,"

But it happens.

That's my year too.

you know, and so far,
I've been able to correct

All the situations
that we've ran into.

It's always on the back
of your mind is,

"what if I let
these guys down?"

The problem is
we're hitting more sand.

I expected to be
in here for weeks,

As I look at these maps,

And these aerial photos,

There's one spot

That just jumps out at me

And I don't quite
understand it.

And it's this strip
right down the middle,

And it looks to me like
it could possibly

Been left for water control.

Those dredges have to float.

The giant floating
derry dredge

Worked its way
along box creek

Extracting gold
from the creek bed.

To keep the dredge afloat,

The old miners left
strips of land called dikes

To stop the water
from escaping.

Dave's theory,
a narrow strip of land

Across the creek
from the vault cut

Could be an old dike

That may still have gold
hidden beneath it.

what I wanted to look at,

Is this center strip.

This strip looks to me
like it's virgin.

I mean, look at all the grass
and stuff, the trees.

that's some old growth.

-They might have left that.

We got everything to gain
and nothing to lose on it.

grasses and stuff,

So it could be virgin.

The thing about
these lost mines

Is we're constantly

Trying to figure
the ground out.

The most logical thing
is that,

They had to float
the dredge over there.

Maybe they left this strip

So that their water
didn't drain out,

Because those tailings
are so permeable,

The water goes
right through them.

So far, that's all topsoil.

we're hitting rock,

that's what I'm talking about.

Decomposed granite.
It's good sign.

A lot of times,
the gold goes in these seams

Where the granite is,

Between these and other rocks.

And so, as it rolls around
in a glacier,

It starts to break up.

And the gold comes out of it.

What are you seeing?

These sluices could be...

It's already washed, I mean...

Those are washed gravels.

All the overburden
that we see,

We see layers,
and layers, and layers.

That just looks like it
was just thrown in there.

There's no distinct layers.

Why would this be thrown,

A center strip like that?
On top of tails.

got dirt in them,

Maybe they stripped
the overburden

And threw it right here
in the middle.

I don't think it's worth it.

Those are tailings.

And every time
we've chased tailings,

We lose our ass.

I say we fill it back in
and keep looking.
