What are you doing watching it?

- If nobody wants to see it,

why it's the most popular
sport in the world?

- I'm talking about MLS soccer,

specifically the New
York City Football Club.

Manchester City and the
Yankees coming together.

$100 million entry fee.

That's a big number.

- We have to ask the five boroughs

what they want on the
badge to represent them.

- We have the Yankees, who
are always competitive.

Um, I think it's a great partnership.

That's a huge move for the MLS.

The MLS doesn't have a big

national media contract right now.

It's tiny.

- [Reporter] First employee
and it's not really a surprise,

just when you look at the resume.

Claudio Reyna is gonna be

the Director of Football Operations.

Four World Cups.

He was called to 111 caps
with the US national team.

And guess what?

Four seasons with Manchester City.

- There is so much talent

in New York City that I believe in.

For so many years, soccer has been

sort of trying to be relevant in the US.

And you can feel that it's coming.

As a player, he was the first

to score 100 league goals.

He was the youngest ever active MLS coach.

He took RSL to their first
ever MLS Cup in 2009.

I would like to formally present

our first head coach

of New York City Football
Club, Jason Kreis.

(crowd applauds)

I wanna represent this club the way

that I know it deserves to be represented.

Just wanted to know why the
team hasn't won any games yet.

- I think he really has
a chance of success.

You have a very ethnically
diverse population here.

Soccer should be a successful sport here.

And if it succeeds, it could be a catalyst

to really help the MLS for the first time

become a major sport in the United States.

Seems like I wake up every single morning

thinking about how we can get more players

and where we can find these players.

- I'm very proud of
what's been accomplished

over the last six years.

But the challenge is
now, the next six years.

We have to raise the bar.

What we're doing in New
York is extremely exciting,

it's a totally different experience.

It's starting a new
franchise from scratch.

We have to be the best
club, not in England,

in Europe, here in Manchester.

We have to be the best
club in MLS in New York.

We have to be the best club in Australia.

We have to create a
global football platform

that no one else is doing.

We have to set the tone,

and we have to make people understand,

the world understand,
that this is a new model,

and this is a successful model.

These are big expectations,
and we can do it.

Don't you think it's even more

than American sports fans
and American football?

- One guy starts to sing,
and the whole stadium

follows suit, I can't
figure how they do that.

- [Jason] We could've
made the easy decision

to stay in Salt Lake, to
continue to coach a team

that I was extremely familiar with.

We had said, you know what?

We're gonna do it differently this time.

We're gonna take that risk.

One of the biggest
concerns and worries was,

am I gonna be able to work with,

big players, and big profiles
and big personalities

like David Villa and Frank Lampard?

They need to be not only terrific players,

but guys that you can
count on to lead the team,

to show the rest of the group

what it means to be a team member

and to hopefully help me
to spread the message,

of those things down to the players.

(somber music)

gravitated today towards soccer.

incredibly within seconds.

Getting Americans to
watch soccer, that is.

- This is bigger than a
moment, it's a movement.

and guts, that underdog mentality.

even though there was a loss to Germany.

was knocked out of the World Cup today

with a 2-1 loss to Belgium in extra time.

- You guys captured the hearts

and the imaginations of the whole country.

It was unbelievable.

- The sooner you place an installment,

the sooner you make the seat selection,

'cause it's based on when
you became a founding member.

So, you have all the time
until the end of August

to make a decision of where you wanna sit.

- Our parking, excuse me,

is for our premium locations,

and that includes Legends,
Champions and Delta.

- Uh, and like I said,
if there is anything

you need, I will be your

- [Claudio] It was a story before and now,

now the story is coming to life.

You could start visualizing the team,

that's what I'm really sensing and feeling

from, you know, the
people that I'm talking to

other clubs in MLS,
coaches, friends of mine.

That it's starting to get real.

- So I was gonna try to connect with Brian

before this call, but we didn't have

enough time, so I actually told him

if we can connect around 2:00, so--

- You know, the idea of you guys

going down and seeing some
players from Colombia,

and we were never presented
these players, is crazy.

You know, I mean, that's not good,

especially when we have 24 slots to fill

and every position to fill, you know?

- So, they're saying if
they don't recommend them,

they don't wanna chase
up our recommendations?

- Wow.

I wanna also kinda find a solution,

because, you know, moving forward,

we need to know the
best players down there.

- My dad is from Argentina,
his passion is soccer.

So, from a young age, it's all I did,

and I played with him and my brother,

and you know, it was my love
right from the beginning.

I was the weird kid who played soccer.

Can I jump in?

My mom and dad made the sacrifice

to give my brother and I a better life.

Yes!
- Goal.

- 1-1.

We're gonna have to really
earn New Yorkers' respect

to make sure that we show
passion every time we play.

- [Announcer] And Yaya
Toure and former teammate,

of course, shaking hands all smiles.

- And then they went away,
so I had a period from,

you know, 1980, '81 till '96, 15 years,

there was no professional
league in this country and so,

when FIFA brought the World Cup in '94,

part of the agreement was you have

to start a professional league

and grow the sport in this country.

It's definitely turned the
corner, and it's here to stay.

- Well, actually you're
the technical coordinator

and Oscar--

- [Ferran] The main
difference between football

or soccer in the US and in Europe

is that they have a salary cap.

This means the maximum amount of money

that you can spend on the whole squad,

and this is about $3 million.

That means that a player would
make 100, $200,000 a year,

while the players in Europe
make two or $3 million a year.

There's only three exception.

Three, what they call, designated players

to whom you can pay as much as you want.

- Oh, that's a big deal.

- Yeah.

I apologize.

- The next slide is just target players.

Mikkel Diskerud, he's an
American playing abroad

in Norway, a very good player.

He'll start today against Colombia.

He was, like, man of the match

for the US in the last two games.

He would be a big name here,
for this market, there's a lot,

he's well-known in the US national team.

He's not a global star, but
within the US, domestically,

he's very well-known, very well-liked,

and he is a very good player.

On the left are potential
designated players.

- Well, I think, for this
group it's worth spending

one minute on the financial repercussions

of the designated players.

As it is now, we have for the third DP,

one million, and if we
have one of these guys,

it's gonna cost more than one million.

If we have another big
star, which is not planned,

but if we decide, because
it becomes available,

another big star, that would be

six million more in the budget.

The system has so many rules
that makes it different

from everywhere else in the world.

And it works against inflation,

because teams do not
compete against each other.

- [Claudio] Now there's guys
that we have to go after

that are, you know, fit
into our salary structure,

so there's probably 30 that just quickly

we can't even go after because,

kind of to Ferran's point earlier,

they're just too much
money, they don't fit in.

(gentle music)

- [Jason] I have a very good understanding

of what I think about you,
David, as a footballer.

But I'd like to know about you,

David Villa, as just a person.

- [Claudio] His father was a coal miner.

- Oh, wow.

My approach to the game, and my approach

to leading the team is one of flexibility,

so I like to hear other ways,
and I like to hear feedback.

- [Claudio] I understand he's like,

an extended arm of you on the field.

Understand that we have to be
examples of leaders, you know.

Me, you, Frank, him, always, no?

Coaches,

and within the group--

- Yeah, and he can't do that unless

he fully understands
what I'm trying to say,

so he needs to be asking me all the time.

- [Claudio] Yeah, well we
spoke to him for a while,

but reality is, he didn't,

he wanted to get to the World Cup.

A lot of work goes behind the scenes,

to do a deal like this, but
at the end it's all about

bringing the player here to New York.

And we're really excited
about Frank joining us.

was a big deal for me.

So we didn't know until
they started playing

and how they would gel together.

- I don't want to be rushed
into making a bad decision

because I'm feeling pressure

on the international market, either.

that there is a certain amount of time

that if we don't have the players signed,

they won't be there at pre-season,

because they have to get green cards

and visas and all this kind of stuff.

This is a New York team based in New York,

that has to develop
itself by its own means

but helped by this family.

The official language of this group

is not English, it is bad English.

So we accept any kind of English

with any accent, even a Scottish accent,

Spanish accent, whatever.

I think, you know, it's a real privilege

to be able to build this club together

and to be the first team that will play

and I'd have a holder.

and then I would play

you know, lots of movement.

to start to think about is
it's gonna be important,

and from my opinion, that you get a break

to just walk away from
the game for a little bit,

you know, I think we have time.

hit the ground running,

in effect, I don't wanna be,

I would rather take less of

wanna show my passion for.

What I dream about one
day is to see soccer

be as big as it is in other countries.

I mean, we've got the people for it.

I mean, New York City has got,
what, eight million people?

I'll get to say I've been
here from the beginning.

And, you know, when I have kids,

and they have kids, they're
gonna be able to say,

you know, a hundred years
ago, my grandfather,

he actually started this chant.

You know, I didn't really follow the MLS.

But I learned about NYCFC
coming to New York City

and I said, wait, is it really

gonna be in New York, or is it gonna be

somewhere outside of New York,

and still associated to New York?

But no, playing in the Yankee Stadium,

the one thing that
connects most of the fans

is I guess the New York style of attitude.

We have attitude in New York.

We may hate each other

for different sports and different teams,

Jets and Giants, Knicks and Mets.

Mets and the Yankees.

But this is the only team
that we can wrap each other

with in New York City and become one.

There's such a huge
ethnicity in New York City.

From Africans to Europeans, Asians,

South Americans, Central Americans,

or just full-blown Americans
that wanna love the game

and it just brought us together.

- And we learn very, very easily

that people were not
asking to import soccer.

Soccer was in New York and we have

the opportunity to develop a platform.

A platform for newer soccer to flourish.

To unleash the power of New York soccer.

- Claudio, two questions.

Where do you see us?

What do you see today, the squad,

overall within MLS in terms of quality

of the squad and competitivity?

- [Claudio] I think we
need a few more weeks

to really get a sense
of the overall league.

If we position ourselves well
in the middle of the year,

where we're at and add the right pieces,

we can have a good end of the season,

gain momentum into the playoffs.

Make the playoffs.

And the playoffs are a bit

of an anything happens situation here.

- [Man] Has David Villa
been the right move

for us in terms of DP,
you're happy with it?

- He's been great.

We've had, as I mentioned before,

some challenges, and
he's never complained,

which has set the tone.

So, everyone really is following him.

struggling to get into the game.

But I know this is what I signed up for.
