Doctor, welcome to the show.

- Well hello there.

It's a pleasure to be here tonight.

I'm pretty nervous

so you'll have to excuse

- [Clark] Oh, good gracious,

- [Agent] Oh absolutely.

(chattering)

- I'm sorry, we just
can't afford this anymore.

I've got to go where the work is.

- They're making cuts

and it's tough enough
to get hours as it is.

- Where are we gonna go?

- I have an interview near
where Aunt Libby lives.

- Aunt Libby?

She's like four hours away.

- We have to make ends meet, Clark.

I can't pass it up.

- We can't go.

This is dad's house.

- Clark, I'm sorry, we
don't have a choice, Clark!

(door knocking)

Clark, it's time for dinner.

Clark, please.

Don't do this.

Don't make it harder than it has to be.

- This time is for you.

Now just relax, enjoy yourself.

The kids will be with me, they'll be okay.

- I appreciate that, Sarge.

- Clark, get your things

(screaming)

(Sarge whistling)

- I don't remember anything
from before we lived here.

I'm not gonna move.

What are you doing?

- I don't want any dirt on my food.

- Isn't that what camping is about?

- Camping is about eating dirt?

- Camping is about roughing it,

eating dirt is half the fun.

- Eat up.

You're right, this is fun.

- Why don't you tell us a story, John?

- Oh, you've all heard my stories.

- Well, I'm sure they
haven't heard all of them.

- Yeah, come on.

- Just please, no ghost stories.

- Oh, I wouldn't think of it.

Although there is a rumor
that these very forest

once hosted a number of human sacrifices.

- John!
- Come on!

- I'm sorry, I couldn't help myself.

Okay, I've got one.

In 1945, my Daddy was a
member of the 82nd Airborne,

an elite group of soldiers

that were taking the fight to
the Nazis on their own soil.

(tense music)

My Daddy's squad was stretched thin

along the clops of trees near
the German border in France.

Their plan was to sneak across the lines

and take the Nazis by surprise.

But it was my Daddy squad
that was in for the surprise.

(plane engine roaring)

The explosions were everywhere.

But Daddy tried to get
a few of the soldiers

to a place where they'd
be safe and bunker down.

He wouldn't take cover himself
till every man was safe.

Before he could, a shell
popped off beside of him.

Everything went black.

When he awoke, he found himself

staring into the eyes of an angel.

Her name was Marie, a Frenchwoman.

She bandaged his wounded leg

and transported him to safety.

Over the next few weeks,
she took care of him,

feeding him, taking care of his injury,

and before long, she was
even helping him to walk.

And when he'd regain more strength

they started biking the
countryside together.

Day and night, they were
by each other's side.

Each of them, the best companion
the other had ever had.

But Uncle Sam still needed my father

to fight the good fight.

So they were separated

and my father went back
to the front lines.

- [Clark] What happened next?

- Well, the war came to a close.

My father ventured back to look for Marie

but he never found her.

She had fled the country,

never to be heard from again.

- Are you serious?

I thought this was a happy story.

- Oh it is.

My father and the Frenchwoman
were in each other's lives

just as long as they were meant to be.

Not two years later,

my father met a woman

who was even more of an angel, my mother.

They were together for
the rest of their lives.

- Hey.
- Hmm?

- You asleep?

- Yes, Clark, I'm asleep
right now as we speak.

- What'd you think of Sarge's story?

- It was great, now shut up.

Go to bed.

(gentle music)

- Hi Mom.
- Did y'all have a good time?

- Didn't sleep.
- Sorry to hear that.

- You're really bad at this.

You know that, right?

- What are you talking about?

I'm on my third lap.

- Jamie, you're the one on the bottom.

You've been watching my screen.

- Guys!

- Move, darn it.
- Come on, Clark!

- You gotta see this.

The only reason you won is
'cause of Clark's stupid contest.

- It says there's a $15,000 prize.

- If we can win this, I
might be able to stay here.

If we win this, I won't have to leave.

- Are you sure about that?

- Yeah, it's 15 grand.

That would give my Mom enough
time to find a job here.

- But our videos, they're good,
but are they $15,000 good?

- Absolutely, I've already
got a story we can use.

- Great, that's great and all.

So this money, are we splitting it 50-50?

- 50-50?

There's three of us.

- I can see that, Jamie.

- The money isn't for us.

It's for my Mom.

She needs it.

All of it.

If we can't get it, this might
be our last summer together.

- So there's absolutely
no money in it for us?

- Shut up, Derek.

- Whatever.

(spitting)

They help us plan what we're gonna shoot.

- Who's playing the parts

- [Clark] We don't know yet.

- Why don't you guys have auditions?

- The crew is full.

- Jamie.

I think I'll just show Mom

the lighter I found in the backyard.

- Welcome aboard.

(gentle music)

- Hey, welcome to our casting--

- Hey, I got this one, Clark.

Hi, hello, how are you?

Could we start with you
telling us your name?

- It's Stephanie.

- Beautiful.

Did you bring your own monologue?

- Yeah, but I didn't memorize it

so I'm going to have to read it.

- Oh, that's okay.

How about you start now?

- Okay.

Rome-ro, Rome-ro,
wherefore art thou Rome-ro.

(slow clapping)

- Thank you, Stephanie.

We'll keep in touch if you get the part.

- [Boy] Next!

(mimicking shooting)

(grunting)

- You're welcome.

- No, this is the actual audition.

We're making the movie ourselves.

- Jamie, you disappoint me.

- Before you say anything,
yes, we are kids.

- I can see that.

The ones making the short film?

- Yeah.
- Right on.

- Oh thanks.

stuff like this all the time.

I kind of feel at home.

playing my Daddy, huh?

- I suppose, any pointers?

- Oh I'm sure Clark's got that covered.

Looks like it's gonna get dark soon.

You sure you're going to be

- Um--

and the light flashed.

- Jamie--

(microwave beeping)

- And action.

- Oh, it's the heartbreak scene,

that'll mess everything up.

- Film somewhere else.

- I could ask Jane if we
could use her apartment.

- Where does she live?

- By the Pineview, I think it's called.

- Pineview Apartments?
- Yeah, that's it.

- You should definitely film there.

- Why?

- 'Cause, it's really
filmy, for your movie.

This happens every now and then,

it's a product of old age.

Just remember why you started all this.

I know it gets tough sometimes.

Don't ever let that keep you
from your goals, alright?
