It makes me feel defensive.

I was put in a situation

and I don't think my sister
handled herself well that night.

I lost my father to suicide
when I was 13.

My father had addiction issues
from as long as I can remember.

I was at that age where
your father's just everything.

Like, a girl, and you're just
coming into your teenage years,

and I just thought he was
the most handsomest, smartest,

and I put him on a pedestal,

and I learned a lot from him.

He made me tough.
He made me strong.

Like, anytime I talk about...

And I had therapy
and everything,

but anytime I talk about,
like, addiction,

I am, like,
super sensitive with it.

I really am.
- Well, now I understand.

- It was tragic,

and it changed
my family forever.

It's brutal.

And I miss him.

And I wonder what
he would think of me.

It's manic, it's depressive,

it's... it's all those things,

and until you know
what someone goes through

and how hard it is...
How hard it is for Kim to,

like, not do what she does...

Do you think she wants
to live that life?

- No.
- She's defending her.

- No one does.

- I get really freakin',
like, mad

when someone labels
someone else's addiction

that we all, thank God,
know nothing about.

I don't have one thing
in my life

that I have to have every day.

- I feel awful for Kathryn.

It's horrible
to lose a parent at all,

but especially like that
and at that age.

It's devastating.

We both feel awful
about even being involved,

even if it was out
of a good intention.

What makes this tricky...
- Because this is real.

- It's interwoven.

- And if you ask a question
about her and her weight

and she says, "Well,
it was brought up last year,"

and you're like, "By whom?"
and she says,

and then we're off and running.

That's all.

So we don't want
to bring this up to Kyle.

Kyle, we're sorry again.

- Right now, my sister
and I are sort of,

like, beginning a path
to turn things around for us.

- I know.

- So sitting here
makes me feel guilty.

- It's understandable.

I can't participate

in that conversation,

- I don't know what we missed

committed suicide

when she was 13.

Therefore,
she's very sensitive to people

who are struggling with
addiction and other problems.

It's very close to her heart,

and she feels very passionately
about that,

and that's why she was
commenting on your sister.

Listening to Kathryn talking
about her father's suicide

just makes her
all the more human to me.

I just see this, you know,
very vulnerable little girl,

and... and it makes me like her
a whole lot more.

who died when I was six.

My sister died
from a drug overdose,

and hearing Kathryn's father

committed suicide
makes me realize

that almost everyone
I know is touched

by substance abuse in some way.

"Here I am, but a mere fifth
of a century old,

"yet able to dictate
the utter despair

"of those who see
no significant meaning

to their existence."

Something in my gut told me

to share this moment
with my daughters,

because drug addiction runs in
both sides of our family...

My side and Harry's...

And I try to be open
and honest about it,

because I think
when you hide it,

that's a problem.

- Have you spoken to her?
- Yes, I have.

She looked fantastic.

I know she takes five steps
forward, a few steps back,

but from what I hear,

that's what people do
when they're in recovery.

It's not an overnight fix.

- Well, that's... I've come
to the realization

that, you know,
it's... taking it a step

at a time, a day at a time,

for the rest of her life.

She's told me herself,
"I don't know.

I don't have
any guarantees for you."

Kim has said that only 5%
of people remain sober,

and that's scary to me,

because what does that mean
for our chances?

- She wants to get better.
She knows...

- I know that.
- She has a problem.

- Wow, she felt horrible
about herself.
