Amanda: She's digging
herself into a deeper hole.

linda: I'm looking for tash.

Natasha: No, like, I have it
pretty much under control.

Wayne: Obviously, I have
fears of the intervention.

Natasha: I'm done.
I'm seriously walking away.

I'm sorry.
Andrew: Whoa, whoa--

Linda: Oh, great.

Natasha: Yeah!

Linda: Are there gonna be

Linda: My daughter natasha,
she is very full of life.

Just spunky, beautiful.

Linda: [laughs]
don't sprain your ankle.

I can't carry you.

karissa: Everyone
liked being around her.

She had a really
contagious personality

that everyone really liked.

Natasha: Cool, right?
Linda: Wow, hey?

Natasha: Yeah, cool.

Amanda: Natasha used to be
the best person I knew.

Linda: [laughs]
natasha: What?

Linda: You remind me of a little
girl, when you were little

and you used to stomp
your feet like that.

Amanda: And now she's
not even natasha anymore.

natasha: My name's natasha and
I like meth and heroin and weed.

Sometimes I do
a little bit of crack.

♪

natasha: I get up,
I either use if I have it,

and just hang around all day,

or you have to hustle
to get money to get it.

Natasha: All you want
is that thing,

and everything pisses you off
after that, right?

You're just like
so angry, right?

Natasha: Right now I'm just--
like you put the heroin

in this little pot thing,
and then you just like boil it,

and this one's kind of gross

because I had blood
in it previously.

Linda: She'll use the meth
for four or five days,

and then she'll use the heroin.

natasha: And you can see
my scars I have, eh?

♪

♪

karissa: She's completely
hit rock bottom.

Karissa: It's all she's known
for the last five years.

♪

♪

♪

linda: My daughter was
10 pounds, 13 ounces,

and she was beautiful.

She was just gorgeous.

Wayne: Natasha as a child
was a very happy,

loving, running around
with her brother,

a typical little girl.

♪

wayne: It was just a normal
family life back then.

Camping, fishing,
hunting, hiking,

anything outdoors, really.

Natasha: We lived
in the country, right?

And I always remember,
kind of, being happy.

Linda: Wayne and I were married.

He was the disciplinarian,
and I was... The mother,

the motherly figure, I guess.

So I just let him
be the iron fist.

When he spoke,
the kids listened,

and I was the mediator
in between, right?

Natasha: My mom
and my dad always fought

about how to raise us.

My dad was really strict,
and my mom wasn't.

My dad didn't even want my mom
to smoke or anything.

She did drink and smoke
a little bit, but he hates it.

Wayne: There was
rules in the home.

Everybody had to follow them,

and if you didn't,
you got disciplined.

Linda: I just couldn't
tolerate it, and...

Ended our relationship.

wayne: Approximately
a year after we divorced,

linda moved six hours
away to kamloops.

The kids felt that it wasn't...

The greatest
being away from dad.

But we did everything
that we could to spend,

you know, holidays together.

Natasha: Like, I know it
definitely broke our hearts.

Like, it was
definitely [bleep] hard.

Linda: The divorce was really
traumatic on both kids,

but especially natasha.

She missed getting
to see her dad,

but she'd have fairly bad
tummy aches and pains.

I'd just take her to counseling,
and try to talk to her,

take her to doctors,

but it was-- she wanted her dad.
She loved her dad.

amanda: Tasha, she missed
her dad more so

because she didn't
like her stepdad.

Wayne: Tasha was fighting
with her stepfather a lot.

She came up to live
with me in 2008

because her mom couldn't
handle her anymore.

♪

wayne: I tried my best
to raise her.

We'd always go,
at least once a month,

to go out for sushi together,

a special father-daughter
date kind of thing.

When she lived with me,
she was into school sports.

Natasha: I used to
do hockey and soccer,

and I was really
interested in it.

Wayne: She always had a smile
on her face, always played hard,

and did very, very well.

Wayne: She was sought after
by teams in prince george

and in kamloops.

Amanda: Linda was always,
like, a free spirit.

She would always give tasha

free reign to do
a lot of things.

Amanda: They were
a lot of fun together.

Natasha: My mom used
to go to raves, right?

So then she knew a lot
of people that were there,

and they'd all come up
to me and be like,

"oh, my god,
you're linda's daughter."

linda: The raves started because
I was in the concert business,

and I'd gone to a couple
raves with my spouse.

When tasha and them found out
I was going to them,

they say they wanted to go,
so I said sure.

Amanda: Linda made us
costumes for raves.

She made everybody
those furry speared hats.

She made tasha a couple of
outfits that were short skirts.

Natasha: They were fun.

They were a lot of fun,
you know,

and I could dance and have fun,
like, do whatever.

Amanda: They were kind of
not mother and daughter,

more sisters or friends,
so not much rules,

and that made that house

the party house for all of us.

Linda: We had several parties.

We had lots of people over that
people did all kinds of drugs.

There was cocaine,
and there was mushrooms,

and there was all that.

Linda: In hindsight,
I just didn't even care.

Like, I just said if
that's what people want to do,

they can do it.

Karissa: At the parties,
her parents

would lock their bedroom,
and tasha was always on

kind of the rebellious side,

so she would break in
and snoop around.

You know, eventually,
she just found

a big bag of what looked
like white/brownish powder.

Natasha: That's the
first time I ever did mdma

because like I found it
in my mom's drawer,

and I put like full capsules.

Amanda: We stole a lot of
ecstasy, mdma, mushrooms,

stuff like that from their room,

which they had
in large quantities.

Wayne: From what
the kids told me,

there was drugs in the house,
linda's place,

but that's from the kids.
I don't know.

I never witnessed that any time
I came down to linda's, so...

I trusted that linda
would do the best she could.

Amanda: The atmosphere
in the house

was the best place in the world.

Everyone's laughing,
the music's going,

and then the next day it could
be world war iii in the house.

amanda: Her and her stepdad

still didn't get
along very well.

They would fight constantly,

and that made her not
get along with her mom.

Natasha: Yeah,
we would fight all the time.

It affected me like a lot.

I felt alone, right?

And I was getting more love
from my drug friends

than I was my family.

Amanda: She had this boyfriend,
and he was a drug dealer.

And he got her into,
like, prescription drugs,

like oxycontin
and stuff like that.

Amanda: And she
would just party,

and we kind of grew out of that.

She quit school, quit hockey,

quit everything
that was good in her life,

and just turned to drugs.

linda: When my husband died,
it was sudden.

Tasha was an addict still,
and she was high.

She was so psychotic.

She was doing so much meth,

her little face
was picked so badly.

She even thought that
we faked the funeral,

and we were all just trying
to help her through it,

and she kicked my dog,
right across the room,

and she hit the brick wall,
and ran.

So I just grabbed my daughter,
took her to the hospital,

and they put her in
the psych ward for a month.

linda: My cousin
came to me and said,

"linda, go to thailand.

"there's this place
called phuket.

"take tasha, go."

so we went to this place
for three months,

and we did a 21-day detox.

She was doing maui thai,

and pilates,
and she was vibrant,

and alive, and tasha again.

Amanda: Her skin got better,
and she looked healthier.

She had gained
a couple of pounds.

Everything just about her
was, like, glowing.

linda: It was tasha again,
ready to be tash.

And she came home,
and it was about a month,

and then she started to
relapse and do it again.

Natasha: I don't
like doing drugs,

but like... It's hard not to,

and it's hard,
like I don't know,

and it makes me really mad
that I am doing drugs.

Karissa: She definitely started
hanging out with a lot more

sketchier people, I guess,
when she came back.

Amanda: She stopped
hanging out with us.

She just completely cut us off.

Linda: I found needles
in stuff in her room,

and I knew she
was using needles.

Natasha: Like when I lose
literally all sense of myself,

and like everything
is just about drugs,

like, it's really scary

because I would do,
like, anything for it.

Linda: She's on
income assistance,

so her cheques are gone
as fast as she gets them

to go for drugs.

She steals.

She stole a pair of blue jeans,
and was apprehended.

She bit the security guard,

and was charged
with assault and theft.

linda: Well, we're at--
it's pretty bleak.

I came home on Friday,

she was on the floor like
a raggedy ann doll, face-down.

She was clearly unconscious.

Natasha: Please!

Linda: Can I help you?
Natasha: No, no, no, no.

Linda: Want a hug?

Linda: Then I walked outside,
and there was a friend of hers

that had overdosed.

Linda: Come on, honey, come on!

Wake up!
You've gotta sit up!

Holy [beep]!

Hello, I just came home, and
found my daughter on the floor,

and there's another
one on the couch.

I got my daughter up,
but this one's not moving.

She's unresponsive.

Breathe, honey!

Yes, she's-- god,
she's blue on the face.

Get off of her!
[struggling sounds]

paramedic: Get my ed kit.

Wake up!
Wake up!

Let's go.
Wakey, wakey.

We need another needle, though.

I need another needle.
It doesn't work.

Linda: They had to give
the girl five needles

before she came to life.

Paramedic: Okay,
just breathe in.

Wakey, wakey.

Linda: Oh, I can't
even believe this.

Natasha, you were dead.

You're lucky mommy came home.

Karissa: That's the biggest
worry I think anybody has here,

that we don't know how many more
times she's gonna overdose

before it's gonna be her last.

Linda: It's bigger
than all of us.

She needs professional
help right now...

Or else we're gonna lose her.

linda: I go looking
for my daughter,

and I start phoning
and finding her,

if it's been any length of time.

Linda: Every time I hear
a fire engine go by

or an ambulance go by,
my heart's,

"is it tasha?"
and I'm praying.

That's where I'm at.

It's gonna be my daughter.

It's gonna be that
knock on the door.

Linda: I'm just
gonna look in the back

and see if the bike's there.

linda: I'm looking for tash.

Linda: If she shows up,
can you text me?

Linda: Isn't this lovely?

linda: Where's
your jacket, honey?

Linda: Where's the bike?

Natasha: I didn't
grab the bike, mom.

Linda: Well,
it's an expensive bike

to just be leaving
at crackhead's place.

Linda: Well, what are you, then,
a heroin addict?

Natasha: Huh?
Linda: What is it you use?

Natasha: Okay, what are we
gonna do for [beep] breakfast?

donna: Natasha and linda
are extremely close,

but I just see
some co-dependency

that isn't healthy.

Donna: A lot of arguing,
and then both making peace,

and then starting
all over again.

Natasha: I'm [beep] going nuts!
Like, I'm gonna snap.

I'm sorry, but it's just...

Linda: Why do you
keep threatening

that you're gonna snap?
What are you gonna snap about?

Natasha: It's just like
don't sit there [beep] staring

and panting with the dog.

Obviously,
you know it annoys me.

I'm sure it annoys
the [beep] out of you,

so why sit there and
[beep] like, it's [beep].

And I can't take it.

Linda: I'm not staring at you.

Natasha: I can't [beep] take it.

It makes me want to snap.

Linda: Snap or use.
Natasha: Snap.

Linda: When's the
last time you used?

Natasha: Yesterday,
last night, mom.

Linda: And how long
will this last?

Natasha: Mom,
it's because I want to use

that I'm [beep] going nuts.
That's why.

I can't take it.

Like, it makes me mental.

linda: Some people say to kick
her out and just do tough love,

but I'm just not ready for that.

Linda: That was
a really good breakfast.

wayne: I usually only see her
once or twice a year

because she's so entrenched
into this drug life

that she has down here
that she doesn't make time

for her family.

That's been hard,
not seeing her.

karissa: I think
tasha is an addict

because she never really
had a lot of guidance.

If tasha gets
treatment right away,

there's still a hope
that she can get better

and find herself again.

wayne: Hi, tash.

How are you?
Natasha: I'm good, how are you?

Wayne: Good.
Let's go for supper.

So what have you
been up to lately?

Natasha: Not much,
just hanging out at home,

trying to stay clean,
like always, right?

Wayne: Have you
been staying clean?

Natasha: Sorry?

Wayne: Have you
been staying clean?

Just leave that there.

Natasha: Um... Yeah.

Wayne: Yeah?

So, how was jail?

Natasha: Ah, that
was frickin' horri--

well, it wasn't as bad
as I thought it would be,

but it definitely
was frustrating.

Wayne: Did you get any advice
while you were in custody?

Natasha: A little bit.

As time went on, though,
I didn't really need the help

that I thought I needed, right?

Wayne: Mm-hm.

Natasha: No.

You know, like, I have it
pretty much under control.

I don't really want to use
as much as I do, you know?

Like, I don't even use
that much at all.

Wayne: Are you high right now?

Natasha: Yeah.

Wayne: Yeah.

Wayne: Perfect.

Natasha: For the meantime, yeah.

It kind of drives me up the wall
to be here, but what can you do?

Wayne: What do you mean?

Natasha: Um...

I don't know,
just it's annoying being here,

and everybody's like, "ah,"
and then I'm like, "ah,"

and it's like, "ah,"
and it's so [beep] annoying.

I hate being here.

Do you know what I mean?

Natasha: I don't know what I'm--
I'm trying to think

and eat and do, and [beep]--
and I don't even know.

concrete plans for your future?

wayne: The saddest thing about
seeing natasha now is just...

How deeply into drugs she is.

wayne: She's fidgety.

She had a lot of pock marks
on her face and arms

that I could see
from the meth use.

Wayne: Having problems
with those things today?

Natasha: It's
[beep] frustrating.

Wayne: Don't worry

There's lots here to eat, okay?

And we'll get more
if you're still hungry.

Wayne: I haven't seen her hugely
under the influence before,

so it kind of took me aback.

wayne: If natasha got clean,

she's got everything
to look forward to.

She's a smart young lady,

worst things that has happened

to natasha because
of her addiction

is just losing her
close friends and family.

All the friends she has now
are addicts, and nobody that

really, really cares about her

and wants her to
get clean and better.

Natasha: My house, man,

Like, [beep] shut up!

Nobody's hearing anybody, but
you're just hearing yourself,

but nobody's [beep]
listening to you.

But it's just, like...
I can't take it!

Natasha: [beep]!

Everyone's thinking
about [beep] turkey.

It's like, shove the
turkey up my [beep],

and I'll become
the turkey and die.

Like, I don't know, but like,
stuff it and then eat it

because like,
that's where I'm at.

I don't want a
[beep] turkey dinner.

everybody's so stoked

about turkey [beep] dinner.

she can to try and help

make things normal,
but it's not enough.

I can see her just
spiralling downward.

Poor linda just continuing
to enable her daughter.

Linda: I told her
no using in the house,

which I think she's not.

I don't really know.

I haven't seen needles.

I haven't seen the tin foil
and all that sort of stuff.

I've got those cabbage rolls.

them what's happening,

but they don't know.

They don't' see it.
They're not living it.

They need to see it.

Amanda: I think the worst
thing about her drug use

is the toll it's taking
on her body,

and the toll it's taking
on her whole family.

Natasha: No, I'm [beep] dead.

Linda: It's all good, right?

Same old, same old, you guys.

Donna: It's heartbreaking.

We're all hurting.

We all just want
the best for natasha,

and this family.

linda: Nothing's changing.

My name's andrew galloway,

and I'm gonna be
your interventionist.

Now, my other job
today is to also

kind of work out the kinks
in the family, alright?

We're only as healthy
as our family is.

I mean, obviously, you two
were married at one point,

and things went south.

Wayne: It was an
unhealthy relationship.

That's why we decided
to go our separate ways.

Andrew: How old was she
when you guys got divorced?

Wayne: Eight.

Andrew: Eight's one of the
more difficult ages, you know,

because they've sort of gotten
accustomed to, you know,

here's what the family looks
like, then all of the sudden,

things are changing.
Where am I living?

What school am I going to?
What city am I gonna be in?

That's traumatic
for an eight-year-old.

Linda: It was, yeah.
Andrew: Right?

And what was the relationship
with stepdad like?

Linda: They were always pitted
against each other for my time.

Amanda: Yeah, she was always
competing for attention,

and she would act out a lot.

Linda: Yeah.

It's true.

Andrew: Were there drugs in the
house when they were growing up?

Linda: Yeah.

Andrew: Were they used openly
in front of young teenagers?

Linda: No.
No.

And I mean, we had parties, and
people were using drugs freely,

but the kids weren't around
for a lot of it, were you?

Like, am I that dumb,
I block out that much that--

amanda: We were around a lot.
Linda: Okay.

Amanda: We, as a younger,
starting-to-party crowd,

we enjoyed being there for it.

Linda: Oh, god, guys.

Amanda: Like we-- like,
you'd have a pool party

with all of your friends,
and like obviously,

it was fun for us too.

Karissa: Never openly
seen anybody do anything,

but we knew that
there was stuff there.

Linda: I don't know.
I guess I'm stunned, like...

Andrew: How many times did you
guys steal the parents' drugs?

♪

amanda: It was a lot.

Andrew: You have a very
concerned look on your face

right now.

Wayne: It just confirms what
the kids had told me before,

but I always took it with
a grain of salt from the kids

because of the issues that linda
and I had in the beginning.

I didn't know if what they
were telling me was fact

or just trying
to get sympathy from me.

I just wish I would have
listened a little bit closer,

and done more.

Andrew: How good are you
at expressing your emotions,

generally?

Wayne: I don't
show much emotion.

Andrew: I'm surprised you
don't have more of a reaction

to all of this.

Wayne: Um, to be actually
angry with linda,

we had so much anger
in our separation

that I do not want
to go down that road again.

I want to support natasha today.

Linda: With wayne's
presence here,

I really think
she misses her dad,

and she-- it'll be
really, really awesome

for her to see him here.

Andrew: Now, do you have
a feeling going on right now?

Linda: It's okay, wayne.

Wayne: I just miss my girl.

andrew: So it does hurt
to see her struggle right now.

Wayne: For sure.

Always has.

Andrew: Do you think she's
gonna take this opportunity?

Wayne: Oh, yeah.
I know she will.

Andrew: What are you feeling?

Linda: I'm just feeling
desperate and broken,

empty,

a failure to my daughter.

Andrew: Do you feel
that you enable her?

Linda: Of course
I've enabled her.

Allowing her to be in my home
while I go to work,

and knowing she's using.

I don't give her money,
but still,

I'm providing a roof
over her head.

I need help.

Andrew: So, we may look
into trying to get you

into this family program.
Linda: Sure, yeah.

Andrew: That would be helpful
just for your relationship.

Linda: Mm-hm.

Andrew: Don't beat
yourself up for the past.

That's gone.
It's finished.

It's over.
Right?

It's about what we do
from this moment forward.

Make sure you make
your bottom lines clear.

Don't worry.
She's not gonna freak out.

This is what's
gonna make her go.

Linda: Mm-hm.

Andrew: But I think it would be
healthy for her not to come home

and live with you.
Linda: Yeah.

Andrew: But whatever you do
put in place, don't bend.

No exceptions.

People talk about addicts
need to hit bottom.

Well, bottom is death, right?

We're trying to avoid that.

But we're also saying
enough's enough.

You have to want it
on some level.

Linda: She does want it.
Amanda: She does want it.

She wants it bad.

Andrew: She's gonna
be given the chance,

but it is gonna be up to her.

andrew: First, I just
want to make sure,

how is everyone feeling?

Karissa: Good.
Linda: Anxious.

Andrew: Anxious?

One thing I want you to remember
too is the bottom lines

are really important.

If she says no,
the intervention's not over.

It is only over
when she goes to treatment

or you guys give up
on your bottom lines.

How is everybody?

Andrew: Well, the thing
I want you to remember is that

everybody's here 'cause
they're worried about you.

Natasha: Okay.
Andrew: Right?

And are here because
they really love you.

Love you and they're
scared to death.

Natasha: Yeah.
Andrew: Alright?

So what we've done is
everyone's written some letters

kind of just telling you
how much they love you.

All I ask is you to
keep an open mind, alright?

Natasha: Okay.

Andrew: Well, then we'll begin.

Karissa: "in your addiction,

"it's like you're
a different person,

"and I miss the tasha
that I was best friends with.

"you've wasted enough of
your precious life

"with this addiction, and I'm
afraid if you don't stop soon,

"that you won't make it
through another overdose,

"and that you will die.

"I want you to know that
there is help available,

"and you can get better,

"and I hope you
decide to take it

"because your life is
worth more than this.

"and I hope that you
see your true value."

natasha: Aw, thanks, kariss.

Amanda: "we're all here
because we love you,

"and as a last chance
to get you help.

"you have so much love
and happiness to give,

"and your addiction
is sucking that from you.

"it has changed everything
about you for the worse,

"but I know that there's still
the strong, smiling, outgoing,

"beautiful tash that
we all know and love.

"so that we can have our best
friend and our daughter back."
