Please welcome our doctors.

Well, we have lots
of great questions for you.

What motivated you
to become physicians?

My first doctor
was a pediatrician,

and he was just
the sweetest guy.

So for me, that's really who
I wanted to be,

and so that's really what
motivated me

to become a physician.

The ratio of black doctors
in relation to the population

is--is...oh, God,
it's kind of abysmal,

so that's why I do things
like this,

because being a patient and
seeing yourself in your doctor

is really important.

I grew up in Inglewood.

It's not a good place to be,

and I knew at a very young age,
I wanted out of that.

And at the time
that I was growing up,

there was a TV show called
"The Cosby Show."

- Yes.
- That was my blueprint.

I saw a doctor and a lawyer,
and they were rich,

and they had
this beautiful family,

and I was like,
"That is what I want."

- And you did it.
- I did it. I was like...

- Look at you. You made it.
- [ laughs ]

When it comes to professionalism
in medicine,

how is important
is work ethic, being driven,

the way you dress?
- Oh.

It is extremely important,
and unfortunately,

because you're black, you are
held to a higher standard.

I'm one of those black folks,

well, people don't know
what I am.

So I see how "other people"
see us,

and there have been times where
I had to go to blows

with people about sh--.

Sorry, y'all are young students.
[ laughter ]

This is
a Catholic school, too.

- Yes.
- Forgive me.

[ laughter ]

Just know you have to be
the best, look the best.

You gotta step it up.

Talk about what you have
experienced or even witnessed

when it comes
to microaggression.

Like, I'm a nurse
instead of a doctor.

Yeah, that's exactly right.
How do you handle that?

So when I went to interview for
the position that I have now,

they asked me,
"Are you okay with being

just a staff psychiatrist?"

And I was like,
"This application

"that I put in said
for 'Medical Director.'

"If y'all want me to be
Medical Director, give me that.

If not, deuces. Like, I'm out."

And then an hour later,
I got a phone call,

and they were like,
"You have the job."

We're gonna wrap up,
but I'd like to just go down

and ask you just
for a piece of advice

or some final thoughts.

YOLO--what is it?
"You only get one life"?

You can do several things
in this one life.

Don't be committed to
something that you felt today

or feel like you failed because
you don't want it anymore

in the future
'cause your life changed.

Ask for help.
You cannot do it by yourself.

It's really important
during my career

that I'm able to give back,
and I wanna make sure

these students have
the confidence to know

that they can do what we did--

what me, Britten,
and Contessa did,

which was to go
from ashy to classy,

to be from pre-med to doctors.

I wrote a whole book by myself.

I love the manuscript.

Like, I really love the way
that you describe depression

through your personal story
'cause I don't think

a lot of people recognize

that doctors are
not necessarily perfect.

There definitely was healing
that took place on my part,

but in order for me
to fully heal,

I know that I have to go
to an outside party.

This book is really, really
important to me because

in the black community,

there's still a lot of stigma
surrounding mental illness.

This is the first time
I wrote a book,

and I wanted to just
get the word out about

my kind of journey in dealing
with more mental health

and depression and anxiety.

A lot of things that I've heard
from patients are,

"It's a white people problem."

But mental health
and mental illness

doesn't have a face.

I have at times become
so depressed that

I didn't wanna get out of bed.
I didn't wanna work.

Thoughts?

It might have a little bit

There would be times when
I'd be so depressed

that I would forget to eat
for days,

When you're depressed
and anxious like I am,

you trick yourself
into getting busy,

and you find things
to distract yourself

from the fact that what is
in front of you

just is grossly dysfunctional.
