You know, it's difficult to explain

the dynamics at work
in ''The Star-Spangled Banner.''

Of course, there's the spirit
of patriotism,

but the song itself,
especially those last two lines,

demand a lot from a vocalist.

l sang with three great singers,

and l am really proud of the way

that they delivered
the a cappella version

of ''The Star-Spangled Banner''
at the Kennedy Center.

We had the honor of performing
at Carnegie Hall just after 9/1 1 .

Emotions were running high,
patriotism was soaring,

and the atmosphere was just electric.

When David Phelps took hold
of this song, ''Let Freedom Ring,''

it was one of those special moments
l will never forget.

Deep within, the heart
has always known

that there is freedom
somehow breathed

into the very soul of life.

The prisoner, the powerless,
the slave have always known it.

There's something
that keeps reaching for the sky.

And even life begins
because a baby fights for freedom.

have freedom's theme.

for a special children's festival

This song, ''A Few Good Men,''
is an apt description

for the New York Police
and Firemen whom we honored

at the Carnegie Hall concert in 2002.

But it is also a description

for any man or any woman
of any generation who stands for truth.

What this dying world could use
is a willing man of God,

who dares to go against the grain
and works without applause.

that shield of faith,

protecting what is pure.

Whose love is tough and gentle;
a man whose word is sure.

God doesn't need an orator
who knows just what to say.
