The wholesale firm of Storch & Søndergaard

Wholesale merchant Hans Storch is celebrating his birthday

and is being honoured for the occasion by his young wife, Mrs Anna…

…and it is wholesale merchant Peter Søndergaard’s

wedding anniversary, which the former bridegroom

has forgotten— to the great sorrow

and indignation of his wife, Dora.

—It would be nice if you could look a little more cheerful

when I come home from the office!

Mr Storch, Please accept the staff’s most heartfelt congratulations

on the occasion of your birthday.

—Congratulations again! Unless I am mistaken,

today is your and your wife’s wedding anniversary!

Søndergaard, realises why his wife is unhappy

and buys his way back into her good graces…

Dearest Dora! I am an absolute brute.

I had completely forgotten our wedding anniversary.

Forgive me. Your repentant Peter

P.S Remember, today is our wedding anniversary.

My dear! A thousand thanks! And couldn’t we meet for lunch?

I’ll wait for you outside the railway station at twelve. Your own naughty Inge.

Act Two

—I've come to take you out for a proper lunch!

I've saved one krone and fifteen øre from the housekeeping money!

—I’m afraid I haven’t time to think about food and drink! I’m drowning in work!

...And couldn’t we meet for lunch? I’ll wait for you...

—So that’s why you haven’t time to dine with me, you deceitful scoundrel!

—Pack every suitcase we have! I’m off into the great wide world!

The wait begins to seem rather long to Mrs Dora…

Telegram Mr Hans Storch, Just a few lines to inform you

that I am leaving at once and never wish to see

your loathsome face again. No doubt you will be quite content

with “your own naughty girl.” Anna Storch

—The whole affair is due to a mysterious card which my wife

saw me receive—and I haven’t the faintest idea who sent it!

...And couldn’t we meet for lunch? I’ll wait for you...

—That card is from my wife and was meant for me!

Meanwhile, I received a card that was intended for the last bouquet to arrive!

—Quick! We must stop my wife before she leaves!

—Fortunately, the bird hasn’t flown yet! But she has already managed to order a car!

— You’re not leaving—we’ve held an extraordinary general meeting!

—I’m the one to blame for the whole mess!…
