on a never-ending mission

to right wrongs,
to develop understanding

and to seek justice for all.

young Billy has been granted

the power by the Immortals
to summon awesome forces

at the utterance

[thunder crashing]

[dramatic music]

in a flash

into the mightiest

Man, you'll never make the team
with that kind of hittin'.

Hey, brother, throw the ball!

Alright. My man Curtis
has his arm back.

Wait up!

Hey, your arm's lookin'
kind of good, man.

When are you coming back
to the team?

I'm not, Dennis.

I'm kind of into my music
right now.

- You play the trumpet or what?
- Violin.

[scoffs]
A what?

- Violin.
- Man, you must be kiddin' me.

Who ever heard
of a black violinist?

Hey, Curtis thinks
he's gonna play a violin.

[laughter]

Man, you're wasting your time
playin' the violin.

You and I are baseball players,
not violin players.

I told you, I'm not interested.

Listen, Curtis,
what about all the brothers

and sisters in the stands?

They'll be countin' on us
to win.

With you at shortstop,
we couldn't lose.

Can't you dig that?

- Look, I'm sorry, I just--
- Sorry, huh?

Well, we got a practice
at 4 o'clock.

I advise you be there.

Ah!

[cat meowing]

[intense music]

Man, how did you go
way up there anyhow?

Now I guess you'd like
to get down, huh?

[cat meows]

My name is Mentor.
This is Billy Batson.

I'm Curtis Hudson.

Every mornin'
I have a free period

so I come out here and practice.

Hey, listen, Curtis,
I play pretty wicked guitar

and Mentor here, well,
he used to play the ukulele.

Well, maybe you'd, you'd be
interested in, uh, jamming

after school today.

Sure. About 2 o'clock?

- Sure, you're on.
- Alright. See you.

Hey, what do you mean
I used to play the ukule?

I'll have you know my prowess

with the uke
as legendary in Hawaii.

Didn't I ever tell you
about the time I, I..

[sneezes]

Billy, that cat has got to go.

[device beeping]

For a man who didn't have
much sleep

you certainly have
a lot of energy.

[sneezes]

Oh, Elders,
fleet and strong and wise

appear before my seeking eyes.

Billy, there is a saying

"To thine own self be true."

Well, I'm not sure I understand
what you mean, Solomon.

He means that people should
feel free to be themselves.

There are some, Billy,
who think the answer

to solving a problem
is to run away.

But remember, Billy, you can
never run away from yourself.

someone with this problem?

The Elders said
there's some people

that aren't true to themselves.

Now knowing the Elders,
we'll probably run into somebody

before the day is through, huh?

'Oh, I forgot,
you're into music.'

Hey, anybody ever tell you
violin playin' is for girls?

- Hey, Mr. Violin, what is th..
- Hey, man.

Hey, I can't believe
you're givin' up baseball

to play the violin.

You're the best shortstop
we have, Curtis.

Look, man, I'm sorry

but I got an audition tomorrow
with the Inter-City Orchestra

and if I get in,
I won't have time to play ball.

No way you're gonna make
that audition, man.

How come?

'Cause tomorrow's our first game

and Maury Wills
is gonna be there

and you're gonna be at shortstop

where you belong.

I can't.

[indistinct talking]

All he thinks about
is this dumb violin.

- Maybe we ought to take it.
- Hey, man.

Listen, man, if you want
that violin back in one piece

you be at practice
this afternoon. Dig?

[music on stereo]

[meows]

[sneezes]

Billy, that was Curtis
on the back of that van.

He can't hold on there
much longer.

Holy moly.

[sneezes]

Shazam!

[thunder crashing]

[dramatic music]

It's Captain Marvel.

- Are you alright, Curtis?
- Bad case of wobbly knees.

- What's the problem?
- Well--

Uh, no problem, Captain Marvel.
It was an accident.

'We didn't know
Curtis was back there.'

Right, Curtis?

Yeah, right. Why don't you just
give me my violin, Dennis?

You sure everything's alright,
Curtis?

Yeah, everything is cool,
Captain Marvel.

- You boys take it easy now.
- Right, Captain Marvel.

Listen, what I said before
still goes.

or you'll be using that violin
for toothpicks.

(male narrator)

you'll be auditioning

for the Inter-City Orchestra.

I'll bet you're excited.

Well, what's wrong, Curtis?

I just don't see the point
in gettin' all turned on, man.

I mean, you work and dream
about somethin' for a long time

and when you almost have it

somebody comes along
and takes it away from you.

You know, Curtis,
you owe something to yourself.

You've been workin' on this
audition for a long, long time.

And nobody has the right
to take that away from you.

I wish it was that easy, Billy,
but it ain't.

You feel like telling us
about it?

Well, it's somethin'
I have to work out for myself.

- Thanks for the ride.

I called his house.

Parents haven't seen him
since this morning.

find a home for that cat.

Well, I am. Just can't give him
to anybody, you know.

- A-are you Billy and Mentor?
- Yes, ma'am.

I'm Adele Sauber,
Curtis' violin teacher.

Have you heard from Curtis?

He just called
and said he wasn't coming.

I don't understand.
He, he was my best student

and I had such high hopes
for him.

- Uh, he told me to tell you.
- Do you know where he is?

No, and-and he sounded
very upset.

You know, I'm really worried.

[meows]

I don't know.

If Curtis had played,
we probably wouldn't have lost.

Hey, you boys played

(Maury)

(Billy)
I-I can't believe it.

- I-I'm Billy Batson.
- Nice to meet you, Billy.

- My friend, Mr. Mentor.
- How are you, Mentor?

- Great treat, Maury.

Uh, could we interrupt you
for a moment?

We'd like to ask these boys
a few questions.

- Go right ahead.

Have you guys seen Curtis
around lately?

Uh, yeah, he was supposed
to play in the game today

and the turkey never showed.

You boys have been pressuring
him to play, haven't ya?

- We hassled him some.
- And what kind of hassles?

We told him if he didn't
show up for the game

he'd be usin' his violin
for toothpicks.

All he cares about
is playing his violin.

Well, that's important to him.

You boys shouldn't try
to take that away from him.

Yeah, but he could have been
the difference

between our team
winnin' and losin'

and that's important to us.

I don't know who Curtis is

but I don't see anything wrong
with playing a violin.

There is, if you're the best
shortstop in the league.

Yeah, I know about shortstops

and I know about
winning and losing too.

I admit, I always felt better

after wining a ballgame
than after losing.

But I think you guys
are forgetting one point here

that's more important
than winning or losing

and that's the respect
for Curtis' decision

to play the violin
instead of baseball.

Respect is what
I'm talking about.

Respect for the other fellow
off or on the field.

That's what
it's really all about.

Why Curtis decided not to choose
baseball or his violin?

Perhaps he had a third choice,

like the Elders every day.

[laughs]

What third choice?

Running away.

There are some, Billy,
who think the answer

to solving a problem
is to run away.

But remember, Billy, you can
never run away from yourself.

You're right, Mentor.

He couldn't cope with his own
problems and he ran away.

Well, there's still a little
time before the audition starts.

- If we can find him in time.
- Right, Mentor.

[thunder crashing]

[dramatic music]

Take care of Polecat,
will you, Mentor?

Any sign of Curtis yet, Mentor?

No, and it's possible
he may have run away.

We'll help to look for him.

[dramatic music]

Hey, hold it.
What are you guys doing here?

Looking for a friend.
We thought he came this way.

This is a restricted area.
They're testing missiles today.

You mean the kind that explode?

That's right. If your friend
is in that missile range

he's in trouble.

[whooshing]

(Captain Marvel)
'Holy moly, Curtis is right
in the target area.'

I've got to stop that missile.

[dramatic music]

[explosion]

This is getting to be a habit.

- Isn't it, Captain Marvel?
- What's that?

You savin' my neck
just because I'm runnin' away

from my problems
instead of dealin' with them.

Well, by realizing that fault,
I'd say

your days of running away
are just about over.

There's still time
to make that audition.

- You game?
- Yeah, I sure am.

Billy and I are very proud
of your being selected

to play in the city orchestra,
Curtis.

Yeah, well, I owe it all
to you guys and Captain Marvel.

Hey, Curtis, have you talked
to Dennis and Jerry yet?

Yeah, we straightened
everything out.

I mean, they apologized,
so everything is cool now.

Curtis, listen,
I have a favor to ask.

Name it.

Polecat here needs a new home.

Oh, sure, I dig cats.

No, no, nothing doing.

Polecat stays with us.

Well, I thought
you were allergic to cats.

Well, I was at first

but it doesn't bother me
anymore.

[meows]

[laughter]

Yeah, but now he's allergic
to you.

[laughter]

Maury Wills is one of the most
respected men in baseball.

Not just because
he was a great player

mostly because
he respects others.

You know, in some ways
all of us are different

but in one way we're all alike.

We all want people to like
and to respect us.

That's right, Billy,
and the way to bring that about

is to treat others the same as
you would like

for them to treat you.

It's called Do unto others.

And it means

if you give respect,
you'll get it back.
