1
OK fantastic so you bought your Shopify plan and now when you look at the store it hasn't got a plan
2
over place and hopefully you're looking at a page something like this.
3
Now the next thing me to do is to get a domain.
4
All right.
5
So one enjoy attention to how we've been set up for the time being.
6
So if I go over to the store at the moment what we have is Tim's super deals dot my Shopify dot com
7
and that is basically what we call a sub domain.
8
It's hosted on my Shopify and it's a subdomain on my Shopify is not our own domain.
9
Now don't get me wrong you could build out a store on this and never change it but when it comes to
10
building your brand.
11
And in fact being taken seriously having something on a subdomain on my Shopify subdomain is really
12
not the way to go.
13
It's really not going to help you build a professional brand and a superb store that you're ultimately
14
looking for.
15
So what we want is a domain such as w w w dot Tymms super deals dot com.
16
Now there are two ways of doing this.
17
I want to make you fully aware of both ways and the limitations the advantages and disadvantages of
18
both so you can make the correct decision for yourself.
19
Now option one is to buy your domain through Shopify which is a very straightforward process.
20
If you just good at the online store go to Mayne's you'll have the option to buy new domain.
21
Obviously you won't see this if you haven't signed up for the plan but assuming you have all you need
22
to do is in this bit here where it says Dumaine is to type in the domain that I want so WIFW at Tim's
23
super deals dot com.
24
All right now immediately tells me whether it's available or not.
25
We've got these tickets available and it'll cost me 14 dollars for the year.
26
And I have to do now is go through and buy it.
27
And I would have that domain.
28
And then what would happen is that Shopify would instantly switch from this.
29
Tim cymbidiums dot dot com.
30
To simply Tim's super deals dot com.
31
So there's a very very straightforward process for fourteen dollars a year.
32
Now the disadvantage of this is when it comes to email now Shopify does not have a full blown email
33
hosting service.
34
What they do is that they forward emails.
35
So what do I mean by that.
36
Well I signed up with Tim at e-commerce mindset dot com as I'm sure you remember and we Shopify I can
37
set up an email for example info at Tim's super deals dot com.
38
But then when somebody emails me on that it will forward it to Tim at e commerce mindset dot com so
39
ultimately get all of my e-mail on Tim at e-commerce mindset dot com.
40
I hope that makes sense.
41
So what that means is that when I'm replying to customers they are also seeing that I'm replying to
42
them with Tim at e-commerce mindset dot com.
43
Nothing to do with Tim's super deals so I hope you understand the important point.
44
Now you can certainly work like that.
45
That's not really a big deal.
46
But again when it comes to building a brand you are to a certain extent confusing your customer with
47
now a different e-mail address.
48
And for me I just find that unprofessional.
49
But I want to stress that my opinion after years in e-commerce but you can certainly do it that way.
50
So that was Option one.
51
So what's option 2 all about.
52
Well you might have noticed this link up here.
53
Connect existing domain and what we can do is we can actually buy a domain outside of Shopify.
54
OK not at all in the Shopify platform but with another provider and then we can connect it to our store.
55
And the advantage of that is I then get the professional e-mail set up that I want.
56
So I'm going to show you that in the next lecture so that you're fully aware of both options.
57
And as I said before that will enable you to make the decision that you're most comfortable with.
